WELCOME Get ready to party because it’s that time of year again: the nights are perfect, the streets are buzzing – Darwin Festival is on at last! We’ve put together a Festival program that places Darwin at the heart of an international conversation. As we celebrate 40 years of Territory independence, we explore our past, reflect on our present and dream of our future. We celebrate the strength and creativity of Australian Indigenous culture and arts practices, and invite incredible international First Nations artists to join them. Across the Festival, local legends will share the stage with the very best from around the globe.

Darwin Festival is always a highlight of the year with a program full of international, national and local shows.

Festivals drive tourism and stimulate local economies in cities around the world, and Darwin is no exception. This year, Darwin Festival is investing in reaching out to national and international visitors to invite them to enjoy a Festival that we, as locals, are privileged to have at our doorstep each year.

This year’s Festival will be especially welcome as the city recovers from Cyclone Marcus. Some of the outdoor locations may look a little different this year, with the loss of some beautiful trees, but it will be wonderful to see these spaces illuminated by the magic of the Festival. Once again, City of Darwin is a proud supporter of this iconic event, including the Teddy Bears’ Picnic on The Esplanade. The vibrancy and diversity of the Festival program has something to offer everyone. It’s a wonderful time to be in our city!

We thank the Northern Territory Government and City of Darwin for their significant support. We also thank our corporate partners who enable us to deliver 18 nights of wonder, relaxation and entertainment. The 2018 Darwin Festival kicks off with the ultimate celebration of our Indigenous country music tradition Long before Aboriginal painters, filmmakers and dance companies were becoming household names, generations of Indigenous musicians were finding a voice in white Australia through country music. Now these hidden gems are the stars of the show in the entertaining and moving concert event Buried Country. Performers from across generations and across the country bring to life a selection of Australian country music’s greatest hits forgotten by many. Darwin’s own Ali Mills will perform a Welcome to Country to get the night started, before a chorus of local community choirs sing a rousing tribute to the Territory’s Indigenous country traditions – including Kathy Mills’ ‘The Arafura Pearl’, a song regarded by many as Darwin’s anthem and one that is now officially registered as a Northern Territory social and cultural heritage icon.

Indianborn, Darwin-based video artist and documentary filmmaker Naina Sen profiles a diverse cross-section of 40 Darwin residents in a series of intimate video portraits, looped together and projected in Festival Park. CONGRESS Visit our seat of power for a celebration of our citizens, our city and democracy in action As the Northern Territory celebrates 40 years of selfgovernance, what would our citizens say if they got to present their own first speech to Parliament? Performance makers All The Queens Men bring their life-affirming brand of participatory art to Darwin Festival. Together they will collaborate with a crosssection of Darwin’s community to present Congress – a citizens’ assembly for real people to have their say. Congress connects the personal with the political. In this special edition, eight professional wordsmiths are matched with eight local citizens to collaborate on their own inspiring ‘first speech’. Join us for these public declarations by voices often unheard and celebrate these personal visions for our collective future.

Her claim – that the baby was taken by a dingo – denied and discredited by zealous police and a flawed legal system. Mish Grigor’s participatory theatre work The Talk is a terribly undomesticated evening. It’s one account of what happens when you start talking about sex with your family: what ‘the talk’ is, and what it shouldn’t be. Based on real conversations with Grigor’s own family, the taboos of sex, relationships and family dynamics are laid bare. It’s explicit and unapologetic, yet also tender and personal in its investigation into uncharted territory.

Jogjakarta’s Senyawa push the boundaries of traditional Indonesian music and experimental music practice. Their unique sound strikes a perfect balance between their avant-garde influences and cultural heritage to create truly contemporary Indonesian new music. Rully Shabara’s deft extended vocal techniques are punctuated by the frenetic sounds of instrument builder Wukir Suryadi’s modern-primitive instrumentation for a sound that is out of this world.

Tia Gostelow has catapulted onto the Australian music scene with her arresting vocals and unique blend of indie-folk-rock. She’s won triple j’s inaugural Indigenous Initiative, taken out two 2017 Queensland Music Awards, started her own record label and is set to release her debut album – and she’s only 18! GOLDSTONE & TERROR NULLIUS Two very different Aussie films expose a side to our country you won’t see in the tourism ads ‘Neo western’ meets ‘outback noir’ in award-winning filmmaker Ivan Sen’s latest film, Goldstone. This stunningly complex and layered work comes together brilliantly as a mystery action thriller, but also in its deeper exploration of corruption and greed at the heart of our country and its history. It features much loved NT actor Tom E. Lewis in his final feature film performance. Art collective Soda_Jerk works at the intersection of documentary and speculative fiction. Their film TERROR NULLIUS is a political revenge fable epically remixed from official archives to offer an un-writing of Australian national mythology. Part political satire, eco-horror and road movie, the film creates a world in which minorities and animals conspire, and not-so-nice white guys finish last. Enjoy live local music performed before both screenings to complete your night out under the stars.

See the ancient megafauna that roamed throughout Central Australia over six million years ago brought spectacularly to life through sound and shadow puppetry. Renowned Melbourne-based visual theatre company Barking Spider has teamed up with the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory to enchant audiences with stories of these prehistoric beasts in this unique installation.

MICK RICTOR Mick Rictor was a young boy when he and his family ‘walked in’ from the Great Victoria Desert in 1986, making him one of the last Aboriginal people to withdraw from a traditional nomadic Untitled, acrylic on canvas, 2018 life. Now a senior man painting for Spinifex Arts Project, he carries his knowledge of traditional lore and custom with him everywhere, demonstrating it artistically through his expressive paintings.

His striking barks and larrakitj (ceremonial poles) are imbued with the visceral qualities of the Arnhem coast – the rocks, the beach and the ocean.

The circus stars of Chasing Smoke, Singapore stand-up Sharul Channa and cabaret artiste Gillian Cosgriff are just some of the performers stopping by selected schools to work with (and entertain!) students.

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery celebrates the culturally significant practice of Tasmanian Aboriginal shell stringing. This national touring exhibition features stunning shell necklaces created in the 1800s alongside necklaces from acclaimed makers of today and the new wave of stringers who have learned this closely guarded tradition at cultural renewal workshops.

All ticket sales are final – there are no refunds, exchanges or cancellations on completed bookings.
