WELCOME Get ready to party because it’s that time of year again: the nights are perfect, the streets are buzzing – Darwin Festival is on at last! We’ve put together a Festival program that places Darwin at the heart of an international conversation. As we celebrate 40 years of Territory independence, we explore our past, reflect on our present and dream of our future. We celebrate the strength and creativity of Australian Indigenous culture and arts practices, and invite incredible international First Nations artists to join them. Across the Festival, local legends will share the stage with the very best from around the globe.

FELIX PREVAL Darwin Festival Artistic Director

There’s definitely a place for everyone at Darwin Festival – ask me personally if you can’t find something here you love! It’s a program full of lights, laughter and reasons to celebrate, as well as stirring stories, powerhouse performances and captivating contemporary arts. Join us for 18 days and nights of Festival moments that we hope will keep you coming back night after night and staying out well past your bedtime to make the very most of this wonderful Territory life.

MICHAEL GUNNER Chief Minister of the Northern Territory

Darwin Festival is part of our city’s identity. It is a dry season tradition, and the quality of art and performances are markers of Darwin’s emerging status in the country and the region. That’s why my Government is proud to offer unprecedented support. Funding for events like Darwin Festival are a key part of our Turbocharging Tourism package, the most significant investment ever from a Northern Territory Government to stimulate tourism growth. The Festival’s future is secure and it is bright. I thank the fantastic board and staff and wish everyone another great festival.

KON VATSKALIS

IAN KEW

Lord Mayor of Darwin

Darwin Festival Chair

Darwin Festival is always a highlight of the year with a program full of international, national and local shows.

Festivals drive tourism and stimulate local economies in cities around the world, and Darwin is no exception. This year, Darwin Festival is investing in reaching out to national and international visitors to invite them to enjoy a Festival that we, as locals, are privileged to have at our doorstep each year.

This year’s Festival will be especially welcome as the city recovers from Cyclone Marcus. Some of the outdoor locations may look a little different this year, with the loss of some beautiful trees, but it will be wonderful to see these spaces illuminated by the magic of the Festival. Once again, City of Darwin is a proud supporter of this iconic event, including the Teddy Bears’ Picnic on The Esplanade. The vibrancy and diversity of the Festival program has something to offer everyone. It’s a wonderful time to be in our city!

We thank the Northern Territory Government and City of Darwin for their significant support. We also thank our corporate partners who enable us to deliver 18 nights of wonder, relaxation and entertainment. My recognition and thanks to my fellow board members and to the staff for their vision and untiring efforts. See you at Festival Park.

Darwin Festival takes place on the land of the Larrakia people. We wish to pay our respects to the traditional custodians of this Country and to their ancestors. As the Festival welcomes contemporary artists and art from around the world, we also celebrate the continuing culture of the Larrakia.

SANTOS OPENING NIGHT CONCERT

BURIED COUNTRY ROGER KNOX L.J. HILL WARREN H. WILLIAMS BUDDY KNOX LEAH FLANAGAN LUKE PEACOCK JAMES HENRY

Image: Jon Langford

The 2018 Darwin Festival kicks off with the ultimate celebration of our Indigenous country music tradition Long before Aboriginal painters, filmmakers and dance companies were becoming household names, generations of Indigenous musicians were finding a voice in white Australia through country music. Now these hidden gems are the stars of the show in the entertaining and moving concert event Buried Country. Performers from across generations and across the country bring to life a selection of Australian country music’s greatest hits forgotten by many. Darwin’s own Ali Mills will perform a Welcome to Country to get the night started, before a chorus of local community choirs sing a rousing tribute to the Territory’s Indigenous country traditions – including Kathy Mills’ ‘The Arafura Pearl’, a song regarded by many as Darwin’s anthem and one that is now officially registered as a Northern Territory social and cultural heritage icon.

Make a night of it by treating your tastebuds to the delicious food served up onsite by Elijah’s Kitchen, Slide in and Bao, Pandalicous Dumplings and Trampoline Gelato, and enjoy beer, wine or soft drinks from the bar. MUSIC // FAMILY Northern Territory / Australia T he Amphitheatre Thu 9 Aug

LETTERS TO LINDY By Alana Valentine

A mother’s loss A nation’s obsession The story captivated a nation. A mother accused of murdering her child. Her claim – that the baby was taken by a dingo – denied and discredited by zealous police and a flawed legal system. The media circus, the rumours, the mob mentality and a nation’s prejudices laid bare. Letters to Lindy creates an enthralling, moving and long-overdue dialogue between Lindy Chamberlain and the nation, drawing on more than 20,000 letters written to Chamberlain as well as extensive interviews with her. Filled with humour and heartbreak, this stunning work explores the public’s relationship with one of 20th-century Australia’s most talkedPhoto: Jeff Busby about figures. On opening night, join playwright Alana Valentine and the cast of Letters to Lindy for your chance to ask that burning question about this story that captivated the nation, and to meet Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton.

Adrenaline-pumping, fullcontact theatre at its best

‘The most perfectly structured, brilliantly produced and best acted new play.’ THE AUSTRALIAN

Fleeing the Congo as a child, playwright Future D. Fidel lived in a Tanzanian refugee camp for eight years before being granted refugee status in Australia. Prize Fighter is inspired by his own story and those of the people he has known. Isa is a young Congolese boxer blazing an impressive career between the ropes. Gearing up for the national title fight, he soon discovers it’s not just his opponents he has to outdo, but the demons from his tortuous past as a boy soldier. Engrossing storytelling meets the visceral thrill of live boxing head on in this tough and unforgiving theatrical experience. Join us ringside as we transform the Studio at DEC into a boxing arena and take you on a high-impact ride tackling issues of immigration, war and personal struggle.

SINCE ALI DIED

Join rapper, poet and lyrical powerhouse Omar Musa for a triumphant evening of deeply personal stories and riotous political songs. In a thundering hour on stage, Musa mashes poems, live music and stories together to confront heartbreak, human connection and the dark realities of Australian culture. Since Ali Died is a rare opportunity to see one of Australia’s most electric and impressive storytellers up close and personal.

Photo: Philip Merry, axolotl photography

Canadian artist Anita Rochon set herself the challenge of creating a work with a touring party of zero. A different local actor takes to the stage each show as her stand-in to perform a weather report like you’ve never seen before. This curious and hopeful work draws a line between ancient weather gods and present-day conundrums. Fusing raw fantasy with research into classical art, small talk, forecasting and how storms get named, Pathetic Fallacy is a factual and personal look at our changing relationship to weather.

Loosely echoing the story of the Biladurang – the platypus – this confessional solo dancetheatre work is physical, tender, funny and dark.

MISH GRIGOR

‘Its physicality is masterful and its comedy biting.’

THE TALK

DANCE AUSTRALIA

A family talks about sex, sexuality and love. The audience re-enacts their conversations. It’s awkward, intimate – and hilarious. Mish Grigor’s participatory theatre work The Talk is a terribly undomesticated evening. It’s one account of what happens when you start talking about sex with your family: what ‘the talk’ is, and what it shouldn’t be. Based on real conversations with Grigor’s own family, the taboos of sex, relationships and family dynamics are laid bare. It’s explicit and unapologetic, yet also tender and personal in its investigation into uncharted territory.

THE FARM

COCKFIGHT Two blokes in an office: one older, one younger. Each body is pushed to its limits in a full-throttle mashup of extreme physical risk-taking, graceful movement and slow-mo fight sequences. Cockfight explores the power play between men, the frailty of the ageing body and questions our culture’s desperate struggle for achievement. A cross between The Office and a cage fight, this game of comical one-upmanship is a darkly hilarious and surprisingly tender piece of physical theatre.

IN YOUR BLOOD

‘Ruminative, poignant and provocative, it is a work of intricate yet unadorned artistry’ THE AUSTRALIAN

A square, a stage, a world, a life. Space is getting tight and time is getting shorter. Two women – one clothed, one naked – move in synchronicity while the tension escalates and the allotted dance space shrinks. Split revels in Lucy Guerin’s sharp, elegant choreographic investigations, reflecting the dilemmas of negotiating with oneself and others in a world of increased pressure and reduced resources. Perhaps the most talked-about dance event of 2017, Split is a thought-provoking structural meditation rendered in movement and delivered by one of Australia’s most original dance companies.

‘A fantastic offering from one of Australia’s weirdest comic talents.’

URZILA CARLSON

ZOË COOMBS MARR

Every time you hear the words ‘studies have shown’ you know you’re about to learn something ridiculous! Hear those words from multi-award-winning South African/New Zealand comedian Urzila Carlson and that something ridiculous promises to be utterly hilarious. A star in the comedy scene and on the small screen (Have You Been Paying Attention?, Hughesy, We Have A Problem), Carlson’s natural, cheeky, straight-up style will have you eating out of her hand – and laughing out loud from the moment she takes the stage.

A feminist comedian dressed as a mouthy male stand-up dressed as a silent Gaulier clown, trying not to offend anyone. Sound confusing? It is. Welcome to this award-winning show from Zoë Coombs Marr, one of Australia’s weirdest and wildest comedians.

DAVE THORNTON

JOEL CREASEY

Dave Thornton has stormed the world’s major comedy festivals and built a global reputation for his honest, whip-smart and damn funny comedy. Now his hilarious new stand-up show is coming to Darwin Festival.

You’ve seen him on TV in comedy galas, panel shows, celebrity interviews and even the depths of the African jungle. Now Australia’s Crown Prince of Comedy (and protégé of the late, great Joan Rivers) is ready to rip back the curtain and fill you in on all the juicy behindthe-scenes action. Strap yourselves in for a night with this blonde bombshell as he slices, dices, sasses and smashes celebrities, pop culture and himself.

SO WHAT NOW?

BLONDE BOMBSHELL

Thornton has learnt a thing or two in the past year. Don’t try and explain Uber to a 70-year-old, never show photos of your kid to a non-parent and, yes, with a one-year-old you will be woken up at 5am even without your breakfast radio gig. An upside-down take on an upside-down year – luckily for you, this comedian has never taken anything too seriously.

BETTY GRUMBLE

PAUL MCDERMOTT & STEVEN GATES LIVE!

LOVE & ANGER

Surreal showgirl, obscene beauty queen and sex clown – there is nobody like the award-winning, head-spinning Betty Grumble. Her genius, hilarious and highly provocative new work is an ongoing womanifesto, call to arms, party and ecosexually charged flesh riot of disco dancing dissent. You’ll be equal parts shocked, enthralled and in stitches at her inimitable blend of outrageous comedy, physical theatre, clowning and nudity. This is intelligent entertainment at its best.

Paul McDermott (Doug Anthony All Stars, ABC TV’s Think Tank) and Steven Gates (Tripod) perform songs of beauty, songs of heartbreak, old squabbles and spontaneous nonsense. The middle men of two of Australia’s most loved comedy trios, these fine songwriters and vocalists perform together at Darwin Festival for the very first time. McDermott and Gates have been friends for 18 years and singing together in private for five of those. Now, with a swag of brand-new songs, these two stand-out talents lock harmonies and minds in a show you don’t want to miss!

BAKER BOY

STIFF GINS

Arnhem Land’s ‘fresh new prince’ Baker Boy is bringing his unique Yolngu Matha language hip-hop stylings and energetic flair to The Lighthouse.

One of Australia’s best known and most loved Indigenous acts, Stiff Gins combine their stunning harmonies and deadly humour to transport you to a world of joy, spirit and song.

The past year has been a whirlwind for this multitalented, multi-lingual artist. He’s wowed audiences at WOMADelaide, Groovin’ The Moo and Laneway Festivals and just about anywhere he’s performed, and has the whole industry talking – and he’s well on his way to becoming one of this country’s greatest hip-hop stars.

Almost 20 years ago, their moniker was a reclamation of an offensive reference to Aboriginal women and now, three albums and countless breathtaking shows later, the name has become synonymous with musical excellence. Hear their heartfelt songs and trademark harmonies shine in this emotive performance under the stars.

GAWURRA

MAMA KIN SPENDER

Known for his deeply resonant, emotional voice and masterful musical sensitivity, Yolngu singer-songwriter and ARIA Award nominee Gawurra is set to touch Darwin hearts when he performs in The Lighthouse.

Mama Kin Spender is a lightning-bolt moment between two long-time friends, co-writers and mischief-makers – ARIA-nominated roots and folk chanteuse and Festival favourite Mama Kin and producer singersongwriter Tommy Spender. It’s a stripped back duo of brooding guitars, primal drums and howling harmonies illuminated by a chorus of local singers arranged by Virginia Bott. With a sound as raw as it is joyful, Mama Kin Spender’s songs rattle, roll and tremble, from block party to heart-rending ballad.

British chef Martin Wildman started his pop-up restaurant to offer modern, highend restaurant menus at an affordable price. His ‘modern Australian’ fare not only tastes great, it’s also sustainably, ethically and locally sourced.

Chefs Mel and Shane serve up hand-crafted tarts, quirky flavoured donuts and a delectable range of baked goods made from scratch with specialty coffee for that Festival pick-me-up.

JOHN FROM TRAMPOLINE

CHUNG JAE FROM LITTLE MISS KOREA

Trampoline owner John proudly makes his delicious sorbet and creamy gelato flavours the old-fashioned, traditional way: fresh and daily, using only the highest quality ingredients. Come to Festival Park and sample a flavour – or two or three!

Little Miss Korea is the first and only Korean Charcoal BBQ restaurant in Darwin, and owner and awardwinning chef Chung Jae is excited to be serving tasty Asian-inspired dishes to Festival patrons at The Aurora Spiegeltent.

AUSTRALIAN FILM: DESERT REDUX

Get in the Festival spirit at the Rimfire Energy Bamboo Bandstand where you can enjoy free performances from some of the best local musos going around.

GOLDSTONE & TERROR NULLIUS Two very different Aussie films expose a side to our country you won’t see in the tourism ads ‘Neo western’ meets ‘outback noir’ in award-winning filmmaker Ivan Sen’s latest film, Goldstone. This stunningly complex and layered work comes together brilliantly as a mystery action thriller, but also in its deeper exploration of corruption and greed at the heart of our country and its history. It features much loved NT actor Tom E. Lewis in his final feature film performance. Art collective Soda_Jerk works at the intersection of documentary and speculative fiction. Their film TERROR NULLIUS is a political revenge fable epically remixed from official archives to offer an un-writing of Australian national mythology. Part political satire, eco-horror and road movie, the film creates a world in which minorities and animals conspire, and not-so-nice white guys finish last. Enjoy live local music performed before both screenings to complete your night out under the stars.

SUNDAY AT CDU Join us at Charles Darwin University for an afternoon of stimulating conversations discovering fascinating women, forgotten histories and what makes us uniquely Territorian

SECRET SONGLINES: CONTEMPORARY INDIGENOUS ORAL HISTORIES Taking Jessie Lloyd’s incredible national research for Mission Songs Project as a starting point, this fascinating conversation between a panel of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander thinkers and creatives delves into the ways people record and share histories through song and storytelling.

WOMEN IN THE SPOTLIGHT Letters to Lindy explores our fascination with Lindy Chamberlain. Its playwright Alana Valentine is joined by Colleen Gwynne, Chief Investigator of the Peter Falconio case and now NT Children’s Commissioner, and a panel of prominent NT women to explore what it’s like to be a woman catapulted into the public eye.

REBEL TERRITORY As the Territory celebrates its 40th year of self-governance, we celebrate our unique, and often rebellious, spirit by revisiting a pivotal moment in our history – the Darwin Rebellion. 100 years later, what do we remember and how does this inform who we are?

This year, SPUN brings you hidden stories told by people you might not ordinarily meet. From prison cells, skyscrapers and bush camps comes a lineup of locals who will have you giggling, gasping and gripping the edge of your seat. To mark the 25th anniversary of the Northern Territory AntiDiscrimination Commission, SPUN shines a light on stories inspired by power. Who has it? Who doesn’t? And what does it take to get it back?

BEHIND THE WIRE

MAYFAIR GALLERY

For over 16 years Behind the Wire has provided Northern Territory prisoners with an opportunity to exhibit their works of art to the public. See the depth and creativity being produced by the prisoners in our correctional facilities.

Four of Darwin’s enigmatic art divas – Marita Albers, Sandra Kendell, Sonia Martignon and Nat Quintos Uhing – indulge their darker natures to offer a curiocase of tropical twilights, beasts and beauties, with expeditions to the recesses of monsoon forests, psychic shadows and salty shipwrecks. Tropical Gothic will tantalise your orbs with dark delectation for all tastes. Freddie Mugarra, Long Neck Turtle and Barramundi

KANALARITJA: AN UNBROKEN STRING

THE WETLAND ARTISTS

We’re taking select guest artists off the stage and sending them back to school as part of our Artists in Schools program. The circus stars of Chasing Smoke, Singapore stand-up Sharul Channa and cabaret artiste Gillian Cosgriff are just some of the performers stopping by selected schools to work with (and entertain!) students.

SCHOOLS PERFORMANCES

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery celebrates the culturally significant practice of Tasmanian Aboriginal shell stringing. This national touring exhibition features stunning shell necklaces created in the 1800s alongside necklaces from acclaimed makers of today and the new wave of stringers who have learned this closely guarded tradition at cultural renewal workshops.

Take a trip to the theatre and give your students an invaluable lesson by attending one of the Festival’s schools-only performances. For school group bookings and discounted tickets contact the Box Office directly on 08 8943 4222.
