If I had to live my life again I would have made a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once every week; for perhaps parts of my brain now atrophied could thus have been kept active through use. The loss of these tastes is a loss of happiness and may possibly be injurious to the intellect, and more probably to the moral character, by enfeebling the emotional part of our nature.

Clare Bowditch

“...for I can sing And speak to him in many sorts of music” * This, my first Darwin Festival, has been steadily growing since my arrival in Darwin in the final weeks of the last dry. With some inspired contribution from colleagues, the wise perspectives of local artists and festival followers, as well as the odd random conversation in Darwin’s markets and streets, a program built up with the seasons. Now, a year on, the cool convections of a new dry heralds a festival that comes to life for 18 days and nights in August. This Darwin Festival guide, designed by Darwin’s Boab Design, is your map. It will aid your navigation through many possible journeys, to many destinations, some much loved and familiar and others less familiar, where moments of surprise await. ‘Be not afraid’, festivals reward the adventurer and the risk taker.

* Quotations from Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare

According to Beethoven ‘music is the mediator between the spiritual and sensual life’, and this is a festival of ‘many sorts of music’, from two of Australia’s all-time piano greats (classical master Piers Lane and jazz legend Mike Nock) to the relaxed and eclectic music lounge at ‘the Rails’, which transform into wild and unpredictable Jam Sessions until late on Saturdays. Perhaps my favourite musical journey is through love, loss and

Darwin Festival is an exciting time of the year for our community. Our city becomes filled with an abundance of arts and culture, and offers an awe-inspiring variety of entertainment choices.

SANTOS OPENING NIGHT CONCERT

FRE E

Adam Giles Darwin Festival was created four years after Cyclone Tracy to draw the community back together and to celebrate the rebuilding of Darwin. Originally known as the Bougainvillea Festival, it has grown and changed to become the much loved Territory institution that it is today, attracting more than 100,000 people a year.

Darwin Festival takes place on the land of the Larrakia people. We wish to pay our respects to the traditional owners of this Country and to their ancestors. As the Festival welcomes contemporary artists and art from around the world, we also celebrate the continuing culture of the Larrakia

redemption following Artist in Residence Topology as they embrace puppetry, political satire, film, comedy, poetry and songs of love.

Darwin. Dry season. Festival time. A smorgasbord of events is waiting, with a program packed full of diverse offerings – from cabaret to comics, puppets to prison songs, Chopin to soul, the best of Indigenous art and picnicking teddy bears.

This year’s Santos Opening Night Concert celebrates women in music with an unbelievable line-up of three of the best voices around. Bring the whole family along for a free night of magical melodies and sublime sounds. Thelma Plum’s serene vocals and lyrically forthright style have seen her challenging the biggest names in music since winning triple j’s National Indigenous Music Awards Unearthed competition aged just 17. Darwin is sure to fall in love with her bittersweet indie-pop tunes.

Thelma Plum

Emma Donovan and The Putbacks

The illustrious Clare Bowditch, with her heavenly voice and mischievous smile, is an absolute Darwin favourite. This award-winning songwriter combines a sensational sound with a true sense of fun, beguiling audiences with her whipcracking banter and open-hearted ballads. The evening closes with charismatic soul singer Emma Donovan, well-known to local audiences for her seamless blending of country, gospel and soul and her appearances with the Black Arm Band. This time around Emma takes to

the stage with her band The Putbacks for a gritty blues soaked set to get you up and dancing. Join host Caiti Baker for one night of beautiful music and the perfect start to 18 days and nights of Festival artistic adventures.

The 2015 Darwin Festival will again entice you from home to immerse yourself in 18 days of fun, food and friendships. It’s Darwin at its best.

Darwin based singer/songwriter Shellie Morris’ groundbreaking work inside Darwin’s Berrimah prison with composer and playwright Casey Bennetto (Keating! – the Musical) created the music for the documentary film Prison Songs, screened on SBS earlier this year. Now Darwin Festival brings you the world premiere of an inspirational new live show, Prison Songs, which offers a rare glimpse into the lives of prison inmates shared through song. This multimedia concert experience features a stellar cast led by Shellie Morris, Ernie Dingo and Kamahi Djordon King.

For the documentary, filmmaker Kelrick Martin interviewed prisoners in the old Berrimah jail who shared their tales of abuse, drugs, desperation and hope. These life stories became the lyrics for a powerful suite of songs and now a cast of some of Australia’s best singers accompanied by a live band will take to the stage to perform hip hop, blues, country, reggae and gospel tunes that tell of life on the inside, mishaps of the past and hopes for the future. There is lighthearted irreverence in songs

such as ‘Berrimah Hilton’ or ‘I’m Talking about Alcohol’ and brutally honest lament in others like ‘What you Learn from Your Mum and Dad’. The concert also features footage shot inside Berrimah, providing an evocative backdrop for this moving musical experience. Produced by Darwin Festival, Prison Songs is an extraordinary concert event that offers a fiercely Australian, strikingly honest take on life performed live by some of the Territory and Australia's finest musicians. Cry Jailolo takes you underwater and into the lives of the local population for a moving story that gives voice to a remote community. Together Eko and his dancers spent two years of research, much of it under the sea, to beautifully capture in dance the life of a coral reef. Inspired by the traditional Legu Salai dance from the Sahu tribe and Soya-Soya dance from North Maluku, Cry Jailolo is an expression of hope and optimism brought to life in a powerful contemporary work. With striking physicality and passion, performers glide around the stage in endless patterns evoking the shimmering rhythms of schools of tropical fish and other underwater wonders. Big Country is set to be an almighty celebration of some of the biggest names on Australia’s country music scene. From local hero David Garnham to Australian music royalty Kasey Chambers, it’s fair to say this event is going to be sensational. Get yourself fed and watered at the onsite food stalls and enjoy an Aussie barbie as you ease on into the night with the country-tinged ballads of David Garnham and The Reasons to Live. Then witness the flame-haired Ruby Boots, aka Australia’s sparky, truth-soaked alt-country troubadour FESTIVA L MULTIPACK:

Bex Chilcott, as she makes her Darwin debut. Just like the characters in her songs, where life and love are serious matters, Ruby Boots does sorrow and redemption with whiskysoaked sincerity. Whatever gives music its heart, Adam Brand breathes plenty of life into its soul, and country music’s favourite Aussie son brings his infectious charm and multi award-winning songs to town. In true Adam Brand style, there’ll be songs of love, heartbreak and travelling tales, performed with his well-loved smouldering vocals.

Uplifting, energetic, dub-reggae-party vibes celebrating diversity, culture and connection Xavier Rudd is a passionate performer whose music is as much about the message as it is about the sound. His experimentation with blues and roots and his onstage charm have seen him gain fans and critical acclaim around the world. Now he’s embarking on a new musical adventure, a ‘dream concept’ come true – moving away from his well-known one-manband set up to take on the world with a live full band show featuring a talented international ensemble. The aptly titled Xavier Rudd & The United Nations brings together musicians representing the diverse cultures of Indigenous Australia, South Africa, Samoa, Germany and Papua New Guinea for one upbeat and dynamic celebration of global sound.

Since his debut album in 2002, Xavier Rudd has been enthralling audiences with his ability to wield a wide range of instruments at once. His trademark sound has seen him playing guitars, shakers, yidakis, Weissenborn slide guitars, tongue drums, stomp boxes, djembes, harmonica and ankle bells and singing all at once, ensuring a Xavier Rudd live performance is one to remember. He brings this solo energy to this new project and the resulting live show is set to be electrifying. Join us from 5pm when The Amphitheatre gates open, and as you settle in for the evening kick back with some tunes spun by DJ MANGOHIG, before the super smooth Bobby Alu makes a welcome return to town, bringing his signature chilled out sounds.

A Barking Gecko Theatre Company and Windmill Theatre co-production with Catherine Wheels Theatre

Families have the opportunity to experience the thrill of live performance with Barking Gecko Theatre Company’s production of the internationally acclaimed work The Ballad of Pondlife McGurk. Originally devised by Scotland’s Catherine Wheels Theatre Company and directed by renowned Scottish director Gill Robertson, this is an absorbing, funny and heart-felt tale about the fragile nature of friendship that will captivate adults and children alike. Martin’s the new kid at school among a sea of unfamiliar faces. Sharon’s the class bully and she doesn’t like Martin one bit. Then Simon McGurk comes along. He’s wildly different to Martin but they become the best of buddies, until one day Martin does something that could poison their friendship forever. From the school’s most popular girl to the class bully, imaginative actor Marko Jovanovic single-handedly brings every character to life with his hilarious impersonations and magical storytelling. He runs, walks, leaps and dances in and around the audience, who are seated in a storytime formation on carpet around the action, so that everyone feels part of the show. No matter what age you are, The Ballad of Pondlife McGurk is uplifting and completely unforgettable. And may just make your next brush with playground politics that bit funnier.

Step into a whimsical wonderland where table tops grow grass and water bottles become the depths of the ocean. Argus is a puppet show about a tiny creature who finds himself sent on an unexpected adventure in a timeless world of colour and whimsy. Making use of nothing but household objects and the performers’ hands, Dead Puppet Society creates Argus’ fantastical world in a low-tech style that has its roots in puppetry and its heart in old-fashioned storytelling. After enchanting audiences with The Harbinger at last year’s Festival, they are back with their finest show yet, this time set to an upbeat original score created especially for youngsters (using the composer’s own children as a sounding board) and performed live by Topology. Heaving bosoms, panniered skirts, perilous hair and a little Chaka Khan on the harpsichord in this classic drama of sex, betrayal and bad behaviour

Dangerous Liaisons is famed for its sardonic wit and morally ambiguous depiction of the battle between the sexes. Following the controversial novel by Choderlos de Laclos, Christopher Hampton’s stage adaptation and the cult film Cruel Intentions, acclaimed independent company Little Ones Theatre brings its unique brand of high camp to this lethal drawing room tragi-comedy. Inspired by Charles Ludlan’s Ridiculous Theatre, Derek Jarman, high-fashion Rococo and the decadent period pieces of Peter Greenaway, this dazzling production was voted one of the best theatre experiences of 2014 by the Herald Sun. Sex, gender and power-play riotously take to the stage in an opulent salon of debauchery.

Darwin was the focus of two new books last year and in Writing Darwin we’re bringing together the authors to talk about their books and our town. Tess Lea’s book Darwin: A Social Biography explores perceptions of Darwin and delves into the fabric, colours, history, geography and lifestyles of this ‘frontier’ town with great insight and vivid descriptions. In the compulsively readable and undeniably moving Warning: The Story of Cyclone Tracy, Sophie Cunningham went back to the eyewitness accounts of those who lived through the devastation of our nation’s greatest natural disaster and those who faced the heartbreaking cleanup and the back-breaking rebuilding. Do the structures where we live, work and gather in Darwin represent who we are as a community? TRUE STORIES TOLD IN THE TERRITORY

By SANDRA THIBODEAUX

By KATE WYVILL

From the Territory’s backyards, paddocks, boats and campervans, comes a collection of remarkable storytellers who love to tell a good yarn. Join us for a Festival edition of SPUN featuring extraordinary stories told by ordinary people. Expect to laugh, cry, exclaim and shudder as Darwin locals reveal their personal stories of survival. Part man-vs-wild with a touch of medical miracle and a dash of tropical humour, this line-up of true stories is bound to surprise locals and visitors alike.

An Indonesian boy goes fishing one day and doesn’t return. Presuming the worst, his parents engage a legendary seafarer to look for his corpse. The seafarer finds nothing because the boy is doing time in an Australian jail… Join us for a performed reading of the latest creation from award-winning Darwin playwright Sandra Thibodeaux. Set in a magical world ‘down under’, The Age of Bones tells a story too fantastical to be true – except it is.

Alma lives somewhere in the middle of nowhere and has been there a very long time. Now she’s been told to leave. Not on your Nelly. A visitor is on his way, romance is in the air and hope is on the horizon... and I’m the Queen of Sheba. Local playwright Kate Wyvill’s new play And I’m the Queen of Sheba is currently in development. Festival audiences have the chance to see a reading directed by multi-award winning writer, Katherine Thomson (House of Hancock, Schapelle, Diving for Pearls) and performed by Sydney stage and screen actor, Jennifer Hagan (Mad Max: Fury Road, Paper Giants) alongside Territory actors.

Festival Lounge The Rails is renowned as the place to be for great music in Darwin and every Friday and Saturday night of the Festival we’re transforming this beloved music haunt into Festival Lounge.

Ainslie Wills

Fraser A Gorman

Microwave Jenny

Melbourne melodist Ainslie Wills’ brand of progressive pop has the music scene taking notice. With her arresting vocals and charismatic melodies she’s an antidote to the ordinary – a performer that’s full of charm, with a sound that’s all her own. Prepare to be utterly captivated by her stunning songs, atmospheric storytelling and simply spectacular voice.

Fraser A Gorman’s songwriting builds around his wry charm and offbeat storytelling – it’s cool-as-hell, funny, heartfelt and super-infectious. In recent years, he has taken a sly sidestep away from the country-folk of his early releases to develop a sound that is still steeped in Americana, but somewhere between Transformerera Lou Reed and the joyous romp of early Big Star.

Husband/wife duo Microwave Jenny describe their music as Pop/Folk/Love. Their 21st century, low-fi equivalent of Motown soul draws on a wide range of lounge and synthpop influences to create a delightfully melodic, smooth sound. Their simple, elegant tunes will captivate you.

Move around the park through the twilight and into the night, surrounded by this world of music and dance.

Blak Cabaret is a deadly take on black– white relations, a vision of blak invasion that flips our history on its head. Darwin’s own Kamahi Djordon King channels his alter ego Constantina Bush in a variety show taking on race relations, Australian history and cultural identity. This unstoppable diva blazes onto the stage as a forgotten Queen from a distant land, giving the wayward white savages the finger and claiming this terra nullius as her own. And she’s bringing with her blak royalty – soul sisters Emma Donovan and Deline Briscoe, along with Kutcha Edwards, Nikki Ashby and Bart Willoughby.

#1 DADS With a knack for crafting golden nuggets of slow-burning bedroom pop, Tom Iansek is one of the finest and most prolific young songwriters in the land right now. Although best-known as front man for acclaimed alt-pop band Big Scary, his solo moniker #1 Dads has had the industry talking. After two album releases, #1 Dads has taken to the stage for live performances of Tom’s relatable melodies and honest lyrics. Using sparse instrumentation and lilting vocals #1 Dads performs delicate songs that are understated yet tenderly beautiful. This Darwin Festival gig is the final stop before this side project is put to rest and one you won’t want to miss.

FRANK YAMMA With DAVID BRIDIE

When master singer/songwriter Frank Yamma performs – whether in Pitjantjatjara or English – audiences travel with him. With an ability to cross cultural and musical boundaries and his incredible voice, rich, deep and resonant, his honest tales of alcohol abuse, cultural degradation, respect for the old law and importance of country are spine tingling. Frank has been performing his music across the globe for the past four years. For this Festival concert his mighty songs, magical guitar playing and deeply evocative voice are accompanied on keyboard by his musical mentor, producer, cowriter and friend, David Bridie for an epic and soulful evening.

As the AU Review put it, Sweet Jean “can break your heart one minute and mend it the next”. Indonesian husband and wife duo Endah N Rhesa bring their quirky mix of folk, jazz, blues and rock ballads to Darwin. These guys love nothing better than to explore music styles, bringing to them their own rich and hip harmonic sound. Get set for a night of energetic and emotive desert reggae when the Tjupi Band hit The Lighthouse stage. Hailing from Papunya Community, 230km north-west of Alice Springs, the band grew up learning from family members of the legendary Warumpi Band. Singing in Luritja and English about loneliness for country, love lost, listening to elders, following tradition, social issues, skin pride and tribal unity, they form part of a new wave of Indigenous Australian reggae. The sound of Tjupi (meaning honeyant in Luritja) epitomises Central Australia desert reggae – sparse and upbeat with a driving kick and snare. The group’s ever-changing line-up (including up-and-coming jazz vocalist Chrystal Butcher) ensures this sound remains fresh and vibrant and of course loads of fun! FESTIVA L MULTIPACK:

A dynamic vocalist, entertainer and songwriter, she is constantly challenging the boundaries of genre and style. Dale Gorfinkel is a multi-instrumentalist, improvisor, instrument builder, installation artist and educator who uses common materials to create unexpectedly wondrous and immersive sonic environments, installations and new instruments. Revolution

New work by BARAYUWA MUNUNGGURR

By artists from the YIRRKALA PRINT SPACE

Paul Johnstone Gallery celebrates 10 successive years of hosting Papunya Tula Artists with an exhibition of artworks painted by the Pintupi. These exquisite paintings are not landscapes by Western definition, but rather an invocation of place executed from a position of cultural, religious and social interaction and created from an intimate knowledge of land.

Rising star Barayuwa Mununggurr, from the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre in Yirrkala northeast Arnhem Land, is part of the next wave of Aboriginal artists drawing on their traditional stories to both inform their artistic practice and connect with the outside world. Barayuwa is a custodian of a site in Blue Mud Bay called Yarrinya and his paintings depict images and stories from that sacred place.

In May 1995 a small revolution happened in far eastern Arnhem Land. The Yolngu artists of BukuLarrnggay Mulka rose up and ‘seized the means of production’. Remote Indigenous printmakers began working on their own press to create limited edition fine art works on paper. Thus began the Yirrkala Print Space, now one of the country’s most highly respected independent print studios. Revolution celebrates this 20th anniversary, showcasing the latest editions produced in 2015.

Darwin Festival is not just about what happens on the stage and in the galleries. We’re also committed to providing artists and arts lovers with opportunities to experience Art Up Close. That’s why our guest artists don’t just perform in their own shows during the Festival, they also conduct workshops and masterclasses for budding artists and work with local school children on artistic projects. Territory musicians, performers and artists are invited to become involved in our workshops program where you can hear from and work with some of our visiting artists. These professional development opportunities will be featured on our website in the lead up to the Festival.

Darwin school children are also lucky enough to have the chance to get involved in the arts, with our Artists in Schools program. Following on from the success of last year’s partnership with the Smith Family, we’re again working together to bring artists into Smith Family schools across the city. Festival Artist in Residence Topology bring their acclaimed Top Up music education program, which has them collaborating with local students to create new musical works exploring their sense of place. Since our humble beginnings, Darwin Festival has grown enormously in both the size of our audience and the richness of our artistic offerings. Key to our success is our innovative programming that reflects the beauty and diversity of the Territory’s unique cultural landscape.

SUPPORT DARWIN FESTIVAL: GIVE NOW!

We are committed to profiling the Northern Territory as a cultural destination through our contribution to the artistic, cultural and economic development of the region. We strive to provide professional development opportunities to increase the critical and creative capacity of the region, including investing in the professional development of NT artists and arts workers. We achieve this through quality programming, strong business partnerships, enhanced community integration and solid business and marketing strategies.

A sincere thank you to our wonderful extended Festival family of volunteers, casual staff and interns – ushers, site managers, stage managers, box office staff, technicians and bar staff. Without your time and commitment our communities wouldn’t be brought together to celebrate and our audiences wouldn’t experience the magic that is Darwin Festival. Also, a huge thank you to our partners and families who support us in a myriad of ways to enable us the privilege of doing what we love to do. Darwin Festival is located in and around various venues throughout Darwin and the city centre, but the heart of the Festival action is Festival Park. Here, you’ll find our big top under the stars The Lighthouse, Brown’s Mart Theatre and our free live music stage the Bamboo Band Stand surrounded by long tables where you’re invited to share food, drink and a chat with fellow Festival goers. From here it’s a quick trip to many city venues, including Darwin Entertainment Centre (just a 10 minute journey by foot), or The Amphitheatre and the Darwin Railway Club (just a few minutes away by vehicle), so you can pack a lot of Festival fun into one evening!
