Attending an arts festival is about being one person amongst many, and getting involved in conversations with friends, visitors, artists and strangers. An audience is like a secret society, taking part in a collective experience in a darkened room or under the stars. This year’s experiences have been designed for audiences of all ages and artistic tastes. Australian pianist Tamara-Anna Cislowska will take audiences on an extraordinary journey through an eclectic piano repertoire. Our latest late-night addition Club Awi has DJs and MCs taking over Happy Yess. And we’re back at The Rails with another very cool collection of musicians in the Festival Lounge. For the younger arts lovers we have a mini festival at Festival Park, as well as a range of top quality Australian and international performances created especially for young audiences. We’re determined to challenge and provoke as well as entertain you this year, with our Words & Ideas program, extraordinary theatre from Ireland alongside our own award-winning Broken and a chance to create your own perfect society with Gobyerno from Manila’s Sipat Lawin Ensemble. And we’re celebrating the last weekend at the Festival with one huge 'arty' party where anything could happen – and probably will.

Darwin Festival is a key highlight on the FestivalsNT calendar and an important part of the Northern Territory Government’s plan to have a greater focus on Asian engagement and deliver on our Confident Culture agenda. That is why the Government is pleased to support the Festival, which boasts more than 150 events including outdoor concerts, theatre, dance, music, comedy, cabaret and visual arts. There’s no better time to be in our city than during Darwin Festival. The sense of community that surrounds this event is something special and sets it apart from other festivals. I love the fact that so much of Darwin Festival happens outside, beneath our perfect dry season skies, when our familiar spaces morph into vibrant venues. Council is incredibly proud to continue to support this awesome Festival showcasing international, regional and home-grown talent. Over the years so many of my favourite Festival shows have been by local performers and I can’t wait to see what’s in store this year. It’s sure to be a real treat.

Welcome to Darwin Festival 2016 and the delights of this year’s program. There’s a great selection of music, theatre and dance with performers coming from overseas, interstate and, of course, our own Territory talent. There are shows that will make you laugh, others to make you think. Our unique dinners are on again and so is the annual feast of visual arts. A special focus this year is entertainment for young children: events that are fun, accessible and affordable. A big thanks to all those whose support makes Darwin Festival possible: the Northern Territory Government; City of Darwin; our corporate sponsors, both long term and new; our donors; our friends; and, of course, you, our audience. SANTOS OPENING NIGHT CONCERT Starring SARAH BLASKO and NABARLEK The Santos Opening Night Concert has long been a highlight on the Darwin music calendar, and this year’s line-up is an absolute winner. With Western Arnhem Land’s Nabarlek and Australian megastar songstress Sarah Blasko sharing the bill, this free event is a must for all music lovers. So bring the family and join us on Thursday 4 August to officially welcome in this year’s Festival. Hailing from the tiny outstation of Manmoyi in Western Arnhem Land, Nabarlek, the garage band that never had a garage, has been leading the musical charge from the bush for more than 20 years. Their rock, reggae, country and gospel-inspired music reflects the ancient stories and customs of the ‘rock country’ people from their homelands. Fresh from touring her latest album around the country and throughout the UK and Europe, Sarah Blasko brings her beguiling voice, poignant lyrics and ravishing melodies to The Amphitheatre. Our opening night concert offers a unique opportunity to see this renowned songwriter and spectacular performer live – and for free! Her latest album explores new musical terrain, but there’ll be plenty of old favourites to enjoy too in this incredible musical celebration to open the 2016 Darwin Festival.

The WRAP is just that – a Wicked Random Arts Party to see off the 2016 Darwin Festival with a bang! Tamara-Anna Cislowska has graced the great concert halls of the world, shared her innate sensitivity and interpretive powers with the finest orchestras and received critical acclaim for her numerous musical recordings. Now she is bringing her brilliant and wide-ranging talent to the Darwin Entertainment Centre Studio stage. The nocturne makes a welcome return to the Festival when Tamara is joined onstage by Irish diplomat and wit Richard O'Brien. John Field: Inventing ‘Night Music’ shines a spotlight on the life and music of Irish composer and pianist John Field, whose Nocturnes influenced Chopin, Schumann and Liszt. Expect sublime music full of longing and lament in a program of music by Field, Chopin, Tchaikowsky and more. Peter Sculthorpe spent his life moulding and shaping an Australian sound. He visited Darwin many times and several of his most

iconic works are directly inspired by the Territory. Tamara was Sculthorpe’s personal choice to record his complete piano works and she won an ARIA Award for her 2015 double album of his compositions. For Peter Sculthorpe: Musical Landscapes, she is joined by violinist Véronique Serret for a personal exploration of their favourite pieces by this musical visionary. The enigmatic, esoteric and otherworldly sensibilities of Satie, Debussy, Pärt and Gorecki pervade The Persian Hour. Take a musical journey west to the multicultural pearling town of Broome with one of its favourite sons – Stephen Pigram. For 35 years this talented singer-songwriter and musician has epitomised Broome music, whether that’s performing with his siblings in the Pigram Brothers band, as a member of the seminal ‘80s bands Kuckles and Scrap Metal, as a feature artist in the Black Arm Band or writing music for theatre and film, including the original production of Bran Nue Dae and Mad Bastards. Stephen is stepping out solo at this year’s Darwin Festival to present his fingerpickin’ folk and country blues snapshots of life in the last frontier. Armed with guitar, six-string ukulele, harmonica, stompbox and his own velvet-gravel voice, he takes us on a journey through Broome music with original songs from his debut CD Wanderer and cult classics drawn from his incredible career.

But Darwin Festival is offering you the chance to be re-energised by the idea, with a fun and thought-provoking interactive theatre experience. If, as it’s said, you get the government you deserve, why not get involved in making the type of government you actually want? Create your own utopia with Gobyerno! Gobyerno (from the Filipino word for ‘government’) is the latest creation from

the internationally acclaimed Manila-based performance company Sipat Lawin Ensemble. In this participatory theatre performance you join other participants to plan the ideal government, create your own ruling bodies and develop a national constitution. Gobyerno offers a unique opportunity to think deeply about how you’d like to see a country set up and run, and to actually get involved in making it all happen. Join a variety of experts – urban planners, education practitioners, scientists,

development workers, artists and perhaps even some local politicians – to reconceive social institutions and create the alternatives you’d like to see, even if it’s just for a day! It’s a playful, imaginative event tackling some of life’s most important issues with a great sense of fun. And that’s a core promise. Gobyerno provides an engaging and illuminating look at our society and the way we govern it. Sign up and get hands on building new cities, systems, stories and visions for this new society.

Contemporary dance, percussion and multimedia come together for one sublime performance by world-renowned Indonesian dancer Rianto Following last year’s much talked about production, the powerful and evocative Cry Jailolo, Darwin Festival is again giving local audiences the chance to see the very best of Indonesian contemporary dance in a spectacular world premiere. Medium sees one of the world’s most in-demand talents, Rianto, return to his homeland of Banyumas in Central Java to collaborate with Indonesia’s leading filmmaker, Garin Nugroho, on a very personal work. Rianto is known internationally for combining the traditional and contemporary in a stunning dance style that explodes with strength, agility, grace and elegance. ‘Lengger’, he gives this erotic cross-gender classical dance a contemporary makeover in Medium. Now exercise is an industry and working out is hard work – but it doesn’t have to be when kids are in charge. For Fitter. Faster. Better. adult participants are paired up with their very own ‘personal trainer’, a Palmerston school student who has been training with St Martin’s to prepare a program of dance routines, games and cardio work-out tailored to the participants’ fitness level. MOUTH OPEN, STORY JUMP OUT Polarbear makes things up. Whether it’s stories, jokes or adventures, he’s a master ‘maker-upper’. Mouth Open, Story Jump Out is about the moment that started it all, and how one little decision set off a chain reaction that changed his life forever. International assassins, secret codes, dog-eating boa constrictors and much more fill the hole left when a father disappears and a boy discovers a talent for telling tales. Australia’s leading Indonesian commentator Tim Lindsey is joined by Indonesia’s leading filmmaker Garin Nugroho for a frank discussion about the state of Islam on our doorstep. Indonesia has long enjoyed a reputation as the ‘smiling face of Islam’, with Muslims there often portrayed as more tolerant and pluralistic than in the Middle East. But is this still true? This riveting discussion, looking at Indonesia before and after the advent of democracy in 1998, examines whether unique and multi-layered local cultures are being pushed out by Islamist reformers and whether Indonesia can still claim to be a bastion of religious tolerance.

The Lighthouse gets a taste of the divine with the heavenly sounds of the Central Australian Aboriginal Women's Choir. This unique ensemble, who sings sacred music from the European tradition in the Western Arrarnta and Pitjantjatjara languages, is recognised as a musical tour-de-force. The Choir’s signature performance piece 'Arrkanala Lyilhitjika', is a stunning narrative musical work accompanied by projections to tell the story of 120 years of continuous choral practice in remote Central Australian communities.

ART UP CLOSE Darwin Festival is not just about what happens on the stage and in the galleries. We’re also committed to providing artists and arts lovers with opportunities to experience Art Up Close. School-aged arts lovers are in for a real treat as Darwin Festival offers schools a range of ways to get involved in this year’s program. We’re partnering with the City of Palmerston and The Smith Family to bring fantastic Festival artists into schools across the region as part of Artists in Schools. We’re heading to Palmerston with storytelling and master ‘maker-upper’ Polarbear. Students from Bakewell Primary School and Corrugated Iron Youth Arts have been working with St Martin’s Youth Theatre to become personal trainers and the stars of Fitter. Faster. Better. (see pg 16 for show details). We're also facilitating an exciting workshops series, including a jazz workshop with Hetty Kate & James Sherlock at Casuarina Senior College and workshops with members of Prophets at Millner Primary. On top of all that, we’re offering special schoolsonly matinee sessions of some great Festival events, including a unique opportunity for students to plan and create the city they’d like to live in with youthfocussed sessions of Sipat Lawin Ensemble’s interactive Gobyerno (see pg 8 for more details). Our Festival artists are not just engaging with local youth. Rust and Bone is an exhibition of natural art and soundscape from multi-disciplined artist Freedom Summers. Abstract wall pieces made from beautiful and interesting objects – rusted tin, bones, stone, wood and feathers – are accompanied by an ambient sound-sculpture. This audio, made up of sound bites or sketches from where the objects on display have been found, is mixed into a soundtrack to create a landscape journey.

The Most Stolen Race On Earth is an exhibition by Sydney-based artist duo Blak Douglas (aka Adam Hill) and Adam Geczy. Taking up most of NCCA’s gallery spaces, these installations challenge the idea of a lucky, fair-go Australia, exposing the nation’s racial myths and fault-lines and the continuing socio-political disempowerment of Indigenous Australians. Drawing on humour, satire and shock, this black-and-white duo shifts the ‘post’ in postcolonial and effectively maintains the rage.

The Darwin Life Drawing group gets together every Sunday for a regular drawing session that focuses on the discipline of drawing the human figure, ‘live’. The group’s third exhibition, Life and the after Life, features sketches from 13 local artists, and their diversity brings an energy to the exhibition through a range of works broad in artistic styles and approaches.

As a leading environmental artist, John Dahlsen is committed to engaging audiences on important social and environmental issues with his unique sense of aesthetics. Echoes showcases his most recent body of work with a poignant exhibition of sculptures, paintings and prints that highlight the issue of plastic ocean litter.

Waiting for Water is an exhibition examining the social, cultural and environmental aspects of water in three relatively isolated cities. Artists Amy Jackett (Hobart), Sarah Pirrie (Darwin) and Suzi Lyon (Alice Springs) explore relationships with water in Australia from their own geographical perspectives, from the subtropical Top End to the arid zones of Central Australia to the rugged topography of Tasmania.

Woodcuts by Mulkun Wirrpanda & John Wolseley The Midawarr – Harvest Series is a unique printmaking collaboration between two of Australia’s most distinguished senior artists. It explores the remarkable world of edible plants that survive and prosper in the monsoon rainforests and floodplains of East Arnhem Land. Large-scale coloured woodcuts of plants and trees are seen through the different lenses of Wirrpanda, a Yolngu artist and clan leader, and Wolseley, a Europeantrained artist known for his mixed media paintings of desert landscapes. Proof of concession must be produced to obtain the concession price. Concessions are only available where indicated. Entry is free for children two years and under. Entry is free for children 12 years and under to the National Indigenous Music Awards.

Darwin Festival only mails out tickets via Registered Post and will charge a fee of $5.50 for this service. Darwin Festival adheres to The Code of Practice for the Ticketing of Live Entertainment Events in Australia. All sales are final – there are no refunds, exchanges or cancellations on completed bookings. Latecomers will only be permitted to a performance during a suitable break or as determined by Venue Management. Under some circumstances this may mean the ticketholder misses the show in its entirety. The right is reserved to not replace lost or stolen tickets where seating is general admission. CLASSICAL MUSIC PACKAGE Buy a ticket to all three Tamara-Anna Cislowska concerts and take advantage of our Classical Music Package discount. Tickets to all three concerts are $30 each rather than the full price of $39 each.

The program has been designed to enable you to take in as many events as possible and then return to the heart of the Festival action in Festival Park. Here you’ll find our iconic Big Top under the stars The Lighthouse, Brown’s Mart Theatre, our live music stage the Bamboo Band Stand and our newest late-night hangout Club Awi at Happy Yess. Make a night of it at Festival Park, mingle with friends, share a bite or enjoy a chat over a cold one from the Coopers Festival Bars. From here it’s a quick trip to many city venues, including Darwin Entertainment Centre (just a 10 minute journey by foot), or The Amphitheatre and Darwin Railway Club (home to Festival Lounge and just a few minutes away by vehicle) and a bit further afield to CDU, so you can pack a lot of Festival fun into your afternoon or evening!
