LETS GET SOCIAL This August tag #dfest17 and join in all the fun!

Darwin Festival takes place on the land of the Larrakia people. We wish to pay our respects to the traditional owners of this Country and to their ancestors. As the Festival welcomes contemporary artists and art from around the world, we also celebrate the continuing culture of the Larrakia. Program details are correct at time of printing but are subject to change where necessary and without notice. Please check darwinfestival.org.au for details. Please be aware that you may be filmed or photographed while taking part in Darwin Festival events. Any footage or photos may be used to promote the Festival in the future.

WELCOME We’re stringing up the lights so you can let down your hair. These cool, dry August nights are few – so, Darwin, come out and enjoy them while you can. What better way to begin a celebration than with dancing? We’re kicking down the theatre door and taking dance to the streets and parks, and everyone’s invited to Dance Darwin Dance!

FELIX PREVAL Darwin Festival Acting Artistic Director

We’re excited to be presenting a program packed with work by some of Australia’s leading Indigenous artists. Joining them are First Nations artists from New Zealand, Canada, the US and Taiwan. We hope that you embrace the chance to see their work and reflect on what the traditional custodians of many nations might teach us about how we live in ours. This year’s Festival program reflects the unique spirit of the Territory – its humour and its resilience, its ancient cultures as well as its contemporary constituents. Above all, Darwin Festival is a chance to celebrate the things that are great about life in the Top End, and we hope you’ll join us in the revelry – it’s a party, after all!

IAN KEW

This great tropical city has risen from the rubble of war and cyclone to emerge as Australia’s economic and cultural capital of the north. We have grown from wild, frontier-town origins into a sophisticated and dynamic multicultural city deeply engaged in our region.

Darwin Festival is one of my favourite events, with its fantastic selection of international, national and local performers. Once again, City of Darwin is a proud supporter of this iconic event.

It’s my great privilege to chair this year’s much-anticipated Darwin Festival, with a program that puts Darwin’s centre at its heart, creating venues and pedestrian thoroughfares like never before. The Santos Opening Night Concert has a new venue at Little Mindil Beach and the City of Darwin Teddy Bears’ Picnic moves to The Esplanade. We’re also taking over Civic Park, bringing a Spiegeltent to Parliament Lawn and spilling out to other venues across the city.

NT Chief Minister

Our story is unique in all the world and for nearly 40 years Darwin Festival has celebrated this story – the many people and cultures that make this place so special. That’s why this Northern Territory Government is, and will always be, a proud supporter. I am excited by this year’s program and I look forward to watching the Festival continue to grow – like Darwin – from strength to strength.

Lord Mayor of Darwin

Darwin Festival celebrates the great outdoor environment of our city and the perfect dry season tropical weather. What I really love is that there is something for everyone. From comedy, to music, to academic discussions – there’s so much thought-provoking content. There really is no better time to be in our city.

Darwin Festival Chair

We value the generous commitment of those who make the Festival possible: the NT Government, City of Darwin and our long-term and new corporate sponsors and donors. I sincerely thank them and the Festival staff who work tirelessly to bring such exciting vibrancy to the program.

SANTOS OPENING NIGHT CONCERT YOU AM I B2M

It’s the dry season. It’s Darwin Festival’s opening night. It’s time to party! Join us to celebrate the opening of this year’s Darwin Festival with one incredible night of music. This year the Santos Opening Night Concert moves to a brand-new venue at Little Mindil, alongside the world-famous Mindil Beach. Come along early, enjoy the spectacular Mindil sunset and settle in for an awesome line-up at this fabulous free family event.

Described by Huffington Post as ‘Indigenous Australia’s answer to The Backstreet Boys’, Tiwi Islands group B2M are no strangers to Festival music lovers. Their catchy pop and R’n’B tunes are the perfect ingredients for a fun and funky party starter. Headlining the Opening Night celebrations are those icons of Aussie rock You Am I, hot on the heels of their epic tour with the Hoodoo Gurus. After 25 years, 10 studio albums, 10 ARIA awards, two live albums, two ‘best of’ albums and hundreds of sold-out shows, You Am I’s ability to conjure excitement on-stage is the stuff of legend. They’re a band who refuses to do anything other than what they love and that generally involves getting together and making a racket – and you’re invited along for the ride!

EASTEND CABARET Audiences all over the world have been seduced by the gin-loving, manbeast-riding, accordion-wielding, multi award-winning cult musical duo EastEnd Cabaret. Now deviant diva Bernadette Byrne and half-moustachioed musician Victor Victoria are cruising into town to shake up Darwin Festival with an utterly raucous and unashamedly risqué hour of their most salacious material. Bursting with filthy songs, stage-shattering audience participation and jaw-achingly funny character comedy, this is cabaret at its most inappropriately hilarious.

CABARET United Kingdom

AN EVENING WITH CONSTANTINA BUSH AND FRIENDS For the first time in her career, cabaret character and Territory treasure Constantina Bush has a live band and back-up singers. To celebrate, she’s bringing the gang to The Lighthouse for an entertaining night of storytelling and marvellous music from the Motown era. With show-stopping songs influential in the divine Ms Bush’s life, remarkable stories from her many adventures and a touch of politics, all backed by a band of Darwin’s finest talents, An Evening with Constantina Bush and Friends promises to be a glorious night out.

RETRO FUTURISMUS Welcome to the post-apocalyptic after-party Retro Futurismus. Two legends of 21st-century cabaret and circus, Anni and Maude Davey, and their stellar cast of hyper-driven prima donnas weave together zero gravity circus acts, siren songs, boutique burlesque and breathtaking performance art in one thrilling spectacle after another. This cabaret prophecy presents an alternative nostalgic vision of the present, channelling some of the cultural catalysts who led us into the 21st century – Fritz Lang, David Bowie, Stanley Kubrick, Björk and Barbarella. Blast off with a show that puts the ‘odd’ in Space Odyssey.

TRACKS DANCE MAN MADE

When building, mining and the military inform much of the local economy, it is time to ask ourselves what makes a man and what does a man make? In the latest show from Tracks Dance, hip hop meets contemporary dance for a series of connected short works following the trajectory of maleness through life. Performed by a stellar cast of male dancers aged 16 to 70, Man Made is an exceptional night of dance exploring states of manhood in individuals and groups. Photo: Thoeun Veassna

SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY FRAME OF MIND

‘A potent blend of technique, daring and playfulness.’ SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

Photo: Pedro Greig

Two unique choreographic visions to sweep you off your feet Sydney Dance Company returns to Darwin with a double bill of powerful, personal and poetic dance. In Rafael Bonachela’s multi award-winning and critically acclaimed Frame of Mind, the innovative ensemble perform with passion and breathtaking precision. A torrent of movement sweeps the stage, matching the intensity of a dramatic contemporary-classical soundtrack by Bryce Dessner (from American rock group The National) and the Kronos Quartet. Australian choreographic prodigy Gabrielle Nankivell’s smash-hit Wildebeest showcases the power of dancers as individuals and their strength en masse. Backed by a stormy and industrial score from Luke Smiles, this moody and animalistic dance work completes an emotionally engaging dance event.

SHE SAID THEATRE

HART

The silenced stories of our country shared Throughout Australia’s history, an unknown number of Indigenous children have been forcibly removed from their families. Parents have been driven mad, grandparents heartbroken, siblings torn apart, language lost and culture stripped away. Noongar man Ian Michael uses testimonials from the Stolen Generations alongside his own story to create the award-winning HART. In this powerfully moving piece of verbatim theatre, audiences listen to survivors of the Stolen Generation in their own words. Their compelling recollections and insights are a poignant reminder that the effects of this country’s treatment of our First Peoples continue to echo in the present. The subject matter may be harrowing, but there is also humour and hope in the stories told. The result is an enlightening and uplifting theatre experience.

‘Provocative and tragic, bracing and bitterly funny.’ THE AGE

SHIT

Written by Patricia Cornelius Directed by Susie Dee

Out of control girls – angry, nasty girls – are a sight to behold. This is a work about these girls Photo: Sebastian Bourges

Meet Billy, Bobby and Sam – three young women who don’t believe in anything. They’re mean, foul mouthed, down trodden, hard bitten and utterly damaged. They’re neither salt of the earth nor sexy. They love no one and no one loves them. They believe the world is shit, that their lives are shit, that they are shit. Ten female theatre makers with vast work histories have come together to bring a cast of three into a daring and powerful theatrical experiment with female characters whom we rarely see. This is SHIT, the hard-hitting and exhilarating play that is as provocative as its title. Using brutal language in a grungy poetic style that offers moments of beauty and relief, SHIT is a vital piece of theatre that sees us confronting our own prejudices and preconceptions.

HELLO, GOODBYE & HAPPY BIRTHDAY By Roslyn Oades & Collaborators

Celebrating the times of our life Roslyn Oades went to an 18th and an 80th birthday party in close succession. Her hit show Hello, Goodbye & Happy Birthday celebrates these two milestones – major transition points in adult life. One represents untold potential and opportunity, the other a lifetime of experiences, aspirations, fears and memories. Scripted from intimate real-life conversations with people either side of these milestones, Hello, Goodbye & Happy Birthday is a beautifully warm and human show. Playful and affecting in equal measure, it sees Oades continue her ground-breaking ‘headphone verbatim’ documentary theatre technique to create extraordinarily immediate and vivid performances. Audiences are offered a rare opportunity to eavesdrop on the conversations of those grappling with how to say goodbye and those trying to work out where to begin.

WE MAY HAVE TO CHOOSE I think therefore I am… often wrong Emma Hall performs a poetic study of the personal soapbox and a fantastical ride through the subconscious mind in We May Have to Choose. “Farting breaks the ice. Ice caps are good places for Japanese butoh dancing. Dancing fills your body with happy chemicals. Chemicals are destroying the oceans. The Arctic is not a safe place to visit. The polar bears are angry with you...” A monologue of sorts, a list of declarations about the universe, 621 opinions delivered in 45 minutes – this stunning, intimate solo, directed by Prue Clark, is a funny, withering and moving piece about the fallibility of thought in our quest to solve the riddles of our world.

Tropical Darwin looks set to send the stars of Circa a little Troppo Circa’s action-packed show Troppo is an explosively funny beach party that will thrill and delight the whole family. Alice in Wonderland meets The Tempest when a rag–tag circus troupe is washed up on a beach on a deserted island far, far away. Dazed and unfamiliar with their colourful surrounds, they embark on a journey through the dazzling landscapes of the mystical island of Troppo, a daring new acrobatic world where you need to get lost to truly find yourself. In the wonderfully whimsical Troppo, Circa’s amazing troupe combines virtuosic circus tricks, acrobatics and aerial work with comedic routines for an energetic show that is ‘fun in the extreme’ (Courier Mail).

In 1996, Sammy J borrowed some Phantom comics from his school gardener. He wasn’t to know it at the time, but that moment set off a chain of events that led to the birth of his daughter, saw him committing a crime in Canberra and ended with a federal policeman searching his attic. ASIAN ROCK DOCUMENTARIES

DON’T THINK I’VE FORGOTTEN & JALANAN Two captivating documentaries provide an insight into life in Cambodia and Indonesia through their rock music scenes Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten rediscovers a lost era of Cambodian rock ‘n’ roll, providing a powerful new perspective on a country frequently associated with war and genocide. It is a celebration of the unique, fertile rock scene of Cambodia in the ’60s and ’70s and the incredible music it produced – from its twangy-guitar beginnings in the late 1950s to the eventual embracing of R ‘n’ B, rock and hippie-inspired psychedelia. This documentary charts the evolution of Cambodia’s music scene as it blossoms and is then nearly destroyed along with the rest of the country. Jalanan (Streetside) follows Boni, Ho and Titi, three gifted, charismatic Jakarta street musicians, over a tumultuous five-year period in their own lives and that of Indonesia. Jalanan goes inside the world of these marginalised musicians and their never before seen sub-culture, while also painting a striking, intimate and often humorous portrait of Indonesia’s frenzied capital city.

The 34th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards celebrate the diverse practices of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, unearthing new artistic developments by new and emerging artists whilst including major works by some of Australia’s most revered artists. This year’s awards ceremony and opening night will be an incredible evening of live performance, music and dance on the picturesque MAGNT lawns. Engage in Indigenous art and culture throughout the opening weekend.

They may not be award-winning (yet), but the works are always a vibrant and diverse example of the incredible art being created around Australia today.

SUPPORT DARWIN FESTIVAL GIVE NOW! Have you ever wondered how Darwin Festival gets off the ground each year? Every August, the Festival activates our incredible city and invites our community to come together, share our creativity, explore new horizons and celebrate. Since our humble beginnings in 1979, Darwin Festival has grown enormously in both the size of our audience and the richness of our artistic offerings. The Festival is funded through a variety of sources with less than a quarter of our income coming from ticket sales. Because of the work we do to bring our communities together and invest in the rich arts and cultural landscape of Darwin, we hold charity status to encourage members of the public to invest in the arts and what the arts do for our community. Put simply, we would not be able to exist without our supporters, big and small.

JOIN THE DARWIN FESTIVAL PRIVATE GIVING PROGRAM Help us develop and program new performances with NT artists and companies, stimulate sustainable employment opportunities for local artists, develop new Indigenous work and enable us to make Festival shows accessible to all audiences. Your contribution will also help us to bring quality acts from other areas in Australia and overseas to continue delighting and stimulating our wonderful audiences.
