WELCOME We’re stringing up the lights so you can let down your hair. These cool, dry August nights are few – so, Darwin, come out and enjoy them while you can. What better way to begin a celebration than with dancing? We’re kicking down the theatre door and taking dance to the streets and parks, and everyone’s invited to Dance Darwin Dance!

We’re excited to be presenting a program packed with work by some of Australia’s leading Indigenous artists. Joining them are First Nations artists from New Zealand, Canada, the US and Taiwan. We hope that you embrace the chance to see their work and reflect on what the traditional custodians of many nations might teach us about how we live in ours. This year’s Festival program reflects the unique spirit of the Territory – its humour and its resilience, its ancient cultures as well as its contemporary constituents. Above all, Darwin Festival is a chance to celebrate the things that are great about life in the Top End, and we hope you’ll join us in the revelry – it’s a party, after all!

This great tropical city has risen from the rubble of war and cyclone to emerge as Australia’s economic and cultural capital of the north. We have grown from wild, frontier-town origins into a sophisticated and dynamic multicultural city deeply engaged in our region.
Darwin Festival is one of my favourite events, with its fantastic selection of international, national and local performers. Once again, City of Darwin is a proud supporter of this iconic event.
It’s my great privilege to chair this year’s much-anticipated Darwin Festival, with a program that puts Darwin’s centre at its heart, creating venues and pedestrian thoroughfares like never before. The Santos Opening Night Concert has a new venue at Little Mindil Beach and the City of Darwin Teddy Bears’ Picnic moves to The Esplanade. We’re also taking over Civic Park, bringing a Spiegeltent to Parliament Lawn and spilling out to other venues across the city.

When building, mining and the military inform much of the local economy, it is time to ask ourselves what makes a man and what does a man make? In the latest show from Tracks Dance, hip hop meets contemporary dance for a series of connected short works following the trajectory of maleness through life. The silenced stories of our country shared Throughout Australia’s history, an unknown number of Indigenous children have been forcibly removed from their families. Parents have been driven mad, grandparents heartbroken, siblings torn apart, language lost and culture stripped away. Noongar man Ian Michael uses testimonials from the Stolen Generations alongside his own story to create the award-winning HART. In this powerfully moving piece of verbatim theatre, audiences listen to survivors of the Stolen Generation in their own words. Their compelling recollections and insights are a poignant reminder that the effects of this country’s treatment of our First Peoples continue to echo in the present. The subject matter may be harrowing, but there is also humour and hope in the stories told. The result is an enlightening and uplifting theatre experience.

Celebrating the times of our life Roslyn Oades went to an 18th and an 80th birthday party in close succession. Her hit show Hello, Goodbye & Happy Birthday celebrates these two milestones – major transition points in adult life. One represents untold potential and opportunity, the other a lifetime of experiences, aspirations, fears and memories. Scripted from intimate real-life conversations with people either side of these milestones, Hello, Goodbye & Happy Birthday is a beautifully warm and human show. Playful and affecting in equal measure, it sees Oades continue her ground-breaking ‘headphone verbatim’ documentary theatre technique to create extraordinarily immediate and vivid performances. Now in their 60s and 70s, they still sing every day, teaching the stories held in Tiwi songs to new generations. DON’T THINK I’VE FORGOTTEN & JALANAN Two captivating documentaries provide an insight into life in Cambodia and Indonesia through their rock music scenes Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten rediscovers a lost era of Cambodian rock ‘n’ roll, providing a powerful new perspective on a country frequently associated with war and genocide. It is a celebration of the unique, fertile rock scene of Cambodia in the ’60s and ’70s and the incredible music it produced – from its twangy-guitar beginnings in the late 1950s to the eventual embracing of R ‘n’ B, rock and hippie-inspired psychedelia. This documentary charts the evolution of Cambodia’s music scene as it blossoms and is then nearly destroyed along with the rest of the country. Jalanan (Streetside) follows Boni, Ho and Titi, three gifted, charismatic Jakarta street musicians, over a tumultuous five-year period in their own lives and that of Indonesia. Jalanan goes inside the world of these marginalised musicians and their never before seen sub-culture, while also painting a striking, intimate and often humorous portrait of Indonesia’s frenzied capital city.

Behind the Wire provides Northern Territory prisoners with an opportunity to exhibit their works of art to the public, and showcases some of the creative products made in correctional facilities. Art lovers will appreciate the depth and creativity of the works on display.

An exhibition examining Ludwig Leichhardt’s epic journey from Queensland through the gulf country and Kakadu to Port Essington in 1845. Using hand–coloured etchings, original journal entries and artefacts collected along Leichhardt’s original path, artist Simon Normand illuminates the disparity between the facts of the journey and what was ultimately reported.

Paiwanese artist Etan Pavavalung endeavours to represent the culture of his tribe in a variety of media. For this exhibition, he brings to Darwin an exquisite Lying Down to have a First Look at the Earth, 2013 series of works carved Image courtesy Taipei Fine and painted on wood Arts Museum planks created using an artistic style that involves wood engraving as a form of relief printmaking.
An exhibition of painting and body painting that draws on the ancient ceremonial traditions and associated intricate and expressive designs of the Tiwi people. Their unique Debbie Coombes, Off to the Footy, artistic aesthetic, limited 2017, Natural ochres with acrylic by the natural pigments of binders on linen yellow, red, white and black, demonstrates an exuberant visual celebration of the world.

INTO THE WATER Through the storytelling of contemporary fibre artists from the greater Maningrida region, this exhibition delves into the Vera Cameron, Barlangu, 2016, waters of Arnhem land. It pandanus and natural dyes presents a world abundant with totemic ancestors and beings, and the various technologies used to hunt. Installations and fibre sculptures are complemented by a video installation and waterthemed fabric designs.
