Members’ Privileges Alumni of Darwin College are entitled to many benefits that we hope will be both useful and entertaining! All privileges are outlined below. If you require further information please contact the Development Office on +44 (0) 1223 335690 or look on the alumni pages of the website www.darwin.cam.ac.uk Before graduation you should have received your first e-bulletin containing helpful links, tips and information. You will be sent an e-bulletin once a term from the Development Office with news of the college and articles about students, alumni and fellows. If you don’t think you have received the e-bulletin please check your junk email or contact the Development Office (alumni.relations@darwin.cam.ac.uk). In College - Dining Alumni can book meals at guest rates up to 30 occasions per quarter. Lunch and dinner are served every day of the week (except Sunday’s when a brunch is served) during term-time. On Wednesdays and Fridays a formal dinner is served. Pre-dinner drinks are available from 7pm with dinner at 7.30pm. When attending the formal hall, smart clothing is expected with ties for men. The weekly menu can be viewed on www.darwin.cam.ac.uk/catering/current-menu.html. Please be aware that the College kitchens close completely over the Easter and Christmas break. Plus from late July to late September they operate a reduced service and usually serve lunch only. For more information please phone +44 (0) 1223 335680. - Coming to stay Guest rooms are available for a stay of up to five days. The rooms available are limited so please book as early as you can to avoid disappointment. If you wish to use the bar during your stay please collect a bar pass from the Development Office in the day, or use your CAMcard- outlined under “University Benefits”. - Punting Local Old Darwinians can join the Darwin College Punting Club as an alumni member for an annual fee of just £30 for unlimited use during the season. To sign up for the Punt Club, please visit the Porters' Lodge. Your punt can be booked on the day or in advance by e-mailing punts@darwin.cam.ac.uk or phoning the porters lodge on: +44 (0) 1223 335660. Alumni can book the punts on a ‘pay per outing’ basis. Again e-mail punts@darwin.cam.ac.uk for booking and further information. - Hiring a room Why not hold a meal, meeting or small conference in the beautiful surroundings of the College? Darwin Publications and Info - Website Our website should be your first port of call when looking for information about the Darwin College, student and alumni events. The details are current and reviewed on a weekly basis. www.darwin.cam.ac.uk - E-Bulletin As described above, the e-bulletin is sent out each term with information, articles and news. Keep your email up to date to keep receiving it, and feel free to send us your own research publications or news for inclusion. - The Darwinian The Darwinian is our alumni magazine which we send to your postal address twice a year. Please keep us up to date with your home address in order to receive your copy. Back dated copies can always be found in the alumni section of the main college website.
Societies - The Darwin College Society (DCS) On graduation all students become members of The Darwin College Society (DCS). The Darwin College Society holds reunion dinners in College every term, a 'Local Heritage Event' about four times a year and a garden party in July. All alumni and their partners or spouses are welcome to attend these events. The dates and details of these are published in The Darwinian, the College website and the e-bulletin. - Groups Darwin College alumni live in most major towns and cities across the world, many have said that they will help ‘Old Darwinians’ new to the area to become acquainted with the region. Contact the Development Office if you would like to use this service.
University Benefits
Access - Use of the University Library As a graduate of Cambridge University you are entitled to use the University Library. To receive your lifetime readers card please make an appointment with the Admissions Office before you plan to use the library or apply online. Contact details are provided under ‘Contact Information’ at the front of this pack.
- CAMcard All Cambridge University alumni can apply for this card, and it is well worth having! The CAMcard entitles you and up to three guests free entrance to all the Colleges when they are open to the public. Granta Punting and Scudamores Punting also offer Darwin College alumni discounted rates on the production of this card. Plus, 15% off at Heffers Bookshop, Heffers Sound and Heffers Online. Maybe most importantly, the CAMcard is a valid form of ID if you wish to visit Darwin Bar.
- E-mail Address for Life When you graduate you lose your @cam e-mail address, however you can register for a free lifetime University of Cambridge address at Cantab.net. This e-mail account offers a web mail account with 100MB of storage. You can also use this service to forward your mail elsewhere. In addition the University of Cambridge Development and Alumni Relations sponsors the first 12 months of an enhanced service if you apply before 31st December of your leaving year. Events - Alumni Festival Every year the Cambridge University Development and Alumni Relations Office organise a weekend in late September where University alumni can come back to Cambridge and enjoy lectures, tours, sporting events and social activities. This event always attracts more than 1000 alumni and their guests. Darwin College also organise an Alumni Buffet lunch on the Saturday of the weekend. Alumni Events in Darwin Set Events - Alumni Buffet Lunch This is organised to coincide with the annual University Alumni Festival. The lunch is open to alumni and their families and takes place at lunchtime on the Saturday of the weekend. If the weather is fine a pre lunch drinks will be held in the garden followed by a sit-down buffet held in the Dining Room. - Reunion Dinners Once a year the Darwin College Alumni team organise a reunion meal. These dinners are organised so that Old Darwinians are invited back in groups of years. We write to invite alumni who are resident in the UK about 6 weeks before the date of their dinner. All details are also published in The Darwinian and on our website: http://www.darwin.cam.ac.uk/alumni/events - DCS Dinners and Local Heritage Events The Darwin College Society hold termly dinners in College, these always take place on a Friday evening. In addition, about once a term they organise an outing to a ‘Local Heritage’ location. All alumni, their partners or spouses are welcome to attend these very popular events. Alumni who live in and around Cambridge are notified before each dinner and event. We look forward to seeing you. - Old Darwinians Garden Party This informal drinks reception is held on the penultimate Friday in July. It is free of charge and all alumni and their guests are welcome to attend. - International Events From time to time the Master and the Development Director will host events at various locations. Student Run Events - Rowing Club (DCBC) The Rowing Club hold regular events to which alumni are welcome. If you would like to receive news and event invites from DCBC please tick the relevant box on the contact update form before returning it to us. Volunteer - Be a College representative Darwin College alumni are spread across all continents and are in most cities of the world. By offering to be a College representative you can help bring alumni together. We will contact you if an alumnus has just moved to your area and would like help in getting acquainted with the region.
- Be a College Advocate In most major cities throughout the world there are many Old Darwinians. By being a College Advocate we would ask you to arrange an occasional dinner or get together with fellow alumni and to help acquaint new alumni to the city and with other Old Darwinians. Doing this is a great opportunity to keep the College and Cambridge alive in your new life and of course creates great networking possibilities.
- Volunteer in College If you are living in and around Cambridge and would like to help the College in its alumni relations or any other area, then we would love to hear from you.
- Career Networks Twice a year the DCS and DCSA hold a joint event where alumni come back to talk to students and give advice about various career choices. Please look out for these themed events to see if you can contribute. This will include a free meal for you and a guest.
Donations - Via Amazon By accessing the Amazon website via the Darwin College website any purchase you have made will credit the College library with a 5% referral fee. This costs you nothing but will ensure that you are helping to fund the Darwin library and its continuing growth.
- Make a Donation to the College Darwin College plans to expand to offer more student accommodation. This will help ensure that in generations to come more students can be accommodated by the College for longer. This is a huge task and requires a level of funding that the College can’t provide alone, by donating however much you can afford will mean that we can get to our goal sooner. If you would like to donate either with a ‘one off’ gift or with monthly planned giving, please use the form enclosed.
