Course Introduction Advance Design 1
a. Design Lectures ; A series of lectures on urban design fundamentals, an introduction to principles and theories of urban design, concepts of harmony, balance, scale and proportion, ideas and approaches, and to compare the qualities with built examples of urban design works. b. Studio Project ; to expose the participants to the meaning of ideas and theories in the urban design realm. Exercises will range from a general 2D to 3D visual compositions of proposal for a redevelopment or rejuvenation. Participants are encouraged to explore and documented the process of design. Stage 1 ; + Background and precedent studies on the growth of the city + Elements, theories and current issues in urban design + Development of past and present urbanism models Stage 2 ; + Participants to work in a team to generate ideas and proposal for a responsive urban spaces and sustainable urban development or redevelopment on a medium scale site. The exercise aims to derive design policy, site analysis and site proposal Stage 3 ; + Individual effort to design a small urban space within a larger urban site. This exercise is an extension from Stage 2 whereby students are to individually produce a detailed design of a public realm on a selected portion of the Stage 2 site proposal

Embracing information Technology (IT) Valley. The reticulation of linkages and connectivity will be the catalyst of the site to enhance its technological roots and evet promoting its tourism, with the existing Danga City Mall that are well known for its high tech sipplies, trhe basis potential of I.T Valley is already within grasp. The fostering shall collaboration and enhancing cultivation among locals and globals. The site will morph as the central point of technological advancement in the coming prospect of I.T industries based on current development progress in JB. Yhe recongnition of high tech framework should not have boundaries to extract more intrest from international venture.

Johor Bahru in 2070, expected to be a city that appreciate culture and environment due to the development of the city. For example, what happened to Sungai Segget, once became the sea gate of Johor Bahru, people interacts and make activities along the river. Nowadays, the river has been polluted by the surrounding development. The middle city of JB has becoming the Central Business District of JB but the people has not yet taken any actions regarding it. The Al Maul Furath tower are created to help people realise the importance of nature and interaction with people. As the function itself is to filter Sungai Segget and indirectly helping those who are in needs. Imagining 2070, city of Johor Bahru will become lively with seamless connection and interactive as the city become less polluted. Towards walkable city and people are pursue towards public transportation.

It has the capabilities to give something to reculture the current Johor Bahru City. As many research and articles have been writen, the major illness to a great modern city is the unhealthy lifestyle citizen that affect the Human Psychology. The Heart of Verdant Oasis has the potential to overcome the issues and become a small piece of land that can be a place where people seek for a short / long term stress reliever. The idea is to reallocate the site periphery with [ Green Equanimity Technology ] in order to republic the people who seek for calmness, enjoyable moment and a havoc in their own mind state.

Sub-parcel 6 of Parcel Site 1 has a strong combination of culture and business - religious and worldly. The site encompasses of 4 different religious buildings - a Hindu temple, Gurdwara sahib, Chinese temple and a mosque attached to Galleria@Kotaraya. However the site is also infamous for prostitution and a massage parlour at Meldrum Walk. Meldrum Walk is known as a red spot, as the area ‘encouraging’ prostituion and ‘massage gone wrong’ treatment centre. Both of the main activities is totally opposite of one another, paradox of programmes in one area. As human nature, it can not be denied that prostitution business is one of the main source of economy influx in any big cities in the world. Sg Segget act as the mediation and naturaliser between these ‘two scenes’. The idea is to preserve the cultural heritage vibes of JB city while boosting the economy of the site. The harmonise & close proximity of the 4 religious buildings gives a strong potential to develop for cultural tourism and lead to the establishment of ‘Street of Harmony’ while the prostitution and massage business act as ‘space’ for people who seek for pleasure and indirectly helps to increase the economy.

Sports has been a fundamental element in the rising of civilization since the Roman Empire. It is a manifestation of wealth and strength of a civilization. In the context of Johor Bahru, the state football team has proven to be in the heart of a large chunk of Johoreans. Players are considered heroes and the institution a force to be reckon with. Johor has seen a significant rise in terms of fan base economy and how a football institution could potentially has an impact and influence on the economy, politics, culture and the morphology of a city. The current situation of the city’s development sees a trend on which developments only prioritize on return of investments rather than creating a better living and safe environment for the residents. Economy and social considerations should be implemented hand in hand to create a sustainable cycle. As the technological era appears ever so rapidly, a new approach should be implemented in improving all aspects of the urban fabric.

In 2070, JDT is expected to be able to expand more and being able to establish its on branding in order to compete with other sports cities. Its empire will not only boost up the economy but also will be able to change to whole Johorean lifestyle to be more active and vibrant. The intention is to make the city more vital and energetic by injecting the JoyLOOP. The theory behind the concept is based on the playground in the city. “Playground with a strong sense of placement speaks to the culture, location and spirit of the community�. Playground creates the image of a place and would be different due to the cultural, location and community lives around it. JDT is a johorean culture, pride and identity of Johor. Creating the image of JDT is crucial in order to achieve sport branding city image.

Johor was on the right track with rapid development, but at the same time, there should be a balance, especially in sports. The two projects - Arena Larkin and Stadium Sport City in Mount Austin. The site is located at southwest of Johor Bahru in between of Hospital Sultanah Aminah and Masjid Sultan Abu Bakar. The site consists of islamic administration and institutional and a huge open and green spaces surrounding the building from bottom to uphill side.

Expecting JDT in 2070 will diversify its empire not just in sports, but widens into business, institutional, medical and education gradually, Urban Sanctuary as a healing centre. Envisions to improve and expand the current medical facilities of Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Johor Bahru with an injection of sports, wellness and other facilities as well as to respond with its interesting surrounding context such as Nursing College Hospital Sultanah Aminah and Sekolah Kanak-kanak Spastik Johor. Imagining 2070 generation is active, ambitious and self-care, well-being facilities should be provided, as well as the importance of open education for people and promoting healthy lifestyle. The Urban Sanctuary covers few main programmes such as medical, education, residential, sports and commercial, in order to ensure it can sustain in relation with Verdant Oasis.

Orthodoxia Paradigm is purposely done to argue the existing condition of Islamic settings at Jalan Gertak Merah, Johor Bahru. The state mosque which is Masjid Sultan Abu Bakar was built on high plateau to show the existence of Islam in Johor Bahru. However, Islam that should resemble the meaning of ‘Rahmatan Lil Alamin’ is not well represent. Therefore the true doctrine(orthodoxy) of Islam needs to be enhance to make sure all the Muslim and Non-Muslim understand the beauty of the faith. The approach taken in this planning is to maximize the public realm so that the justice and tolerance in the usage of public spaces is given to all. The image shows of how the integration of existing Islamic culture at the site with new typology of programs can create more inclusive approach towards the public and shift the existing dogma of exlusivism. The projected results of this approach are public should have better understanding of Islam as Rahmatan Lil Alamin and at the same time the vision of Bangsa Johor could become true when the midset of exclusivsm being diminished.

Piezoelectri-city is an eclectic derived urbanscape that spans from efficient energy intake and usage to humble history-oriented commercial districts that aims to revitalize the once burgeoning tradeport of Johor Bahru. Disguised under the whole city is a water purifying unit to clean the polluted strait. Situated along the coast of the Tebrau Strait, it overlooks the portside of Singapore as well as the connecting bridge. This makes the site a prominent destination not only for the tourists but also locals are able to commercialize their traditional wares resulting a modern take on the what was once a crossroads of the world. The Piezo Once-Stop-Center is a commercial hub designed to satisfy the needs of the users utilizing the city while Tech-Park supplies power to the purifying unit via user-generated electricity. Nakhoda harbour adorns the east side of the cityscape further highlights the cultural reminiscent intent of the project intending to be a place where culture, language, and people interweave.

Back in 100 years ago, Johor Baru was well-known with its glorious name, called Tanjung Puteri. Johor Bahru itself is one of the historical city in Malaysia. In colonization era, the city has shared a lot of common historical value from its own state to an international level. However, today the history of Johor Bahru has slowly diminished due to urbanization. Thus, what will happen to the history of Johor Bahru in the future? The objective of this project is to promote and enhance the value of history and culture of Johor Bahru by taking the advantages of the waterfront as a joyful element.

Terra Rossa means earth and rose, the blooming roses for abandon earth, revive the abandon straits to become one of the most outstanding international harbour port for JB. The project focuses on rejuvenating the abandon straits into SeaGate which offers variety function to sustain and well-developed nation, economic, and social for the locals and internationals in JB 2070.

Sungai Segget is one of the crucial sentimental historical value among JB society, the river once a glorious venue to JB/Tanjung Puteri for economical and social development. The river serve as water based business venue, the origin of this water based business is situated in the triangular shape island named Pulau Pasar Ikan. Through time the island surrounded by reclamation due to development, hence the gold route starts to fade its sentimental and the importance to the society. The project focuses on rejuvenating and reminiscing the historical value through mono-no-aware urban theory. The feeling of nostalgic will be reborned once again with a preservation and enhancement of Historical Plaza, renovation of Masjid Keling, development of accommodation and monorail station. The Wake Maker evoke from the ‘origin’ of the island with bold and seamless connectivity design for better economy-social interaction of local and international for JB 2070.

Recreation of memory and bringing the audience into the picture are part of the main strategies involved in order to attract the future generation towards this techno urban agenda. Inventions and innovations are increasingly applied through out the high speed whirling world. The main question is, how do we go beyong orders and alterreality in a form of digital and enter the world of otherness? The innovative memorial techno-realm is a re-enchantment of our temporary world, shaped by movement and technology that distort real reality, by substituting real time and space with virtual and augmented realities. It is radically different from the present. Modern utopianism emerged with a new social concept, time and space, a manifestations of order.

Furmata point was taken from a music node that resembles stop, pause or rest for awhile. Music is an approach to reliven the unliving linkage between two vast developed country which is Malaysia and Singapore. Music could bring people from around the world to gather and create more vibes in a spaces. Artificial topography was used as the main theory for the structure of the pedestrian bridge which elevated the human movement to the top floor without disturbing the vehicle road on the ground area. Vein resembles the movement of the growth on each node in the site which helps to develop and control the site. Predicted scenario on 2070 that there will be more high-tech mobile used as transportation which helps to smoothen the traffic system plus there will be no boundary between Singapore and Malaysia

Strategically located in the heart of Iskandar Malaysia and in Johor Bahru City Centre, the proposed Vantage Bay Healthcare City is an integrated health and wellness development that is made up of medical, wellness and educational facilities, all jointly developed by Singapore’s Rowsley Ltd and Malaysia’s TMC Life Sciences Berhad. Within 1-km from the Causeway connecting Johor Bahru and Singapore, the 43.91 acres site Vantage Bay Healthcare City sits by the waterfront overlooking the Straits of Johor, with spectacular views of the Singapore and Johor skylines. Vantage Bay Healthcare City will be a vibrant hub comprising medical facilities such as a 500-bed general hospital, a specialist hospital, a community hospital and long-term care facilities. There will also be health sciences education and training facilities, and a purpose-built urban wellness hotel and resort, incorporating retail and other related services. This project will create a truly integrated healthcare service platform that is unique to the region. This exciting new urban will accelerate the development of high quality medical and wellness services in the State of Johor.

The site is located at Stulang area, east of Johor Bahru City Centre. The site is historically was a ‘orang laut’ settlements before the area was taken by the government to develop the area. The area was covered by mainly mangrove forest which is the main income source for ‘orang laut’. Today, it is a whole new development area comprises of private school, residential area, waterfront ( reclaim land ) and small commercial area. The intention is to propose a new masterplan for Stulang area for the year of 2070, with the approach of Verdant Oasis, it is to achieve a new city environment with the integration between culture, nature and technology. It aims to be a self sustain city in the future and become one of the well-known city in the world. In 2070, the site will be expected to become an intellect hub with speciality in development of medical robotic technology, artificial intelligence and sustainable energy. It will also comprises of hybrid housings, waterfront and integrated public realms. The world will be witnessing the whole new educational city in Stulang and expected to become a catalyst on surrounding development area.

What if man are being released to the sea? What if land sank to the sea? By 2050, around 200 million people will be permanently displaced through amalgamation of complex political, social, and economic drivers ( Stem, 2006 ) and as globalization has accelerated, social-cultural conflict will become the most rampant form of violence ( Marshall, 2005 ). Analogically, are mankind adapting? Are they fit for the challenges at the acme of the 21st century? Various parties should be responsible helping each other in maintaining human stabilization in order not to be lost in the midst of world evolution. Multiple methods such as the introduction of hybrid programmes typologies and technological advances can be utilized to achieve the stabilization vision. This vision can be foresee mimicking ‘utopia’ ; an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. Can utopian system be a narrative that solves human problem? Or it is just a fairy tale? In this scheme, I will speculate, discuss and re-manifest the social images within the urban planning context of 2070. The identified issues and interpretations will tackle the sustainability questions of social, political, economical, humanity and environmental awareness.

Giving the sense of nostalgic where the combination of nature and human created a harmony cultural life at Stulang. The combination of nature and culture act as Verdant Oasis in Stulang. This project aims to revive and preserve the nature and culture at Stulang that will create nostalgic sense which could boost up the economy by attracting tourists to experience the integration of nature and culture. Reflecting to the roles of mangrove forest in stabilizing the ecosystem, 4 main programmes will be injected into the site either from the existing anchor point or in future which are wellness, aquaculture, entertainment and eco-tourism that will stabilize the development and sustainability while promoting the integration of nature and culture. The supporting programmes will enhance the main programmes and could boost the economy of Stulang.

The design concept integrates three key theme ; Connecting Places, Performance Landscape and Enrich Experiences. Together these create a rich narrative and establish the framework for architecturally integrated park experience that can only be found along the mouth of Stulang River.

BioCity is targeting to be the green lung of Johor Bahru to attract people to relax and even promoting tourism of Johor Bahru. With the existing zoo and park that is not properly managed, a basic potential of green lung is already in grasp. The BioCity will give the opportunity for business, build collaboration and exchanging cultivation among local yet globally. The BioCity will be serving many programmes such as a zoo, urban park, commercial area, riverwalk, research and development centre, an educational hub and many more to attract people to come to this BioCity. To achieve sustainable development, BioCity will have a large rainwater harvesting to harvest rainwater to use for the needs of BioCity. Furthermore, the park will have an area where the nature can be preserved and allow the natural forest for growth without any human exploitation.

Shrine of remembrance is an approach to merge the spiritual part of the traditional funeral with the practicality of the modern way when we are living in the urban and densed city. This is conveyed through the ritualistic symbolic modernized programmes. Visiting the grave changes from a memorial ceremony to recreational activity. People can take a leisurely public walk at the park after the ceremony or having a meal in the ground level commercial spaces. It is not only a day for the death, but also for a family gathering together. And for this site, the cemetery which usually resembles a space occupied by the death would be a public space that death and life can interact with each other.

The Grand Palace was built in 1866 by Sultan Abu Bakar, the 1st Sultan of Modern Johor. Projecting what the Grand Palace can become in year 2070, with the intention to build a Civic Centre in Johor Bahru, The Grand Palace itself will be a focial point or centre of this prominent land area. By expanding the existing Grand Palace to become Royal Hotel that can accommodate tourists, royal visitors, and dignitary from around the world could make the palace lively beside the increasement of Johor Bahru’s tourism and economy. Moreover a new space also being proposed which is Johor Bahru Colosseum, a multi-purpose arena to place mass entertainment with an intention for a place to make Tunku Mahkota Johor’s hobbies becoming everyones’ hobby. A marina also being recreated, as the seaward side flight of stairs of the Grand Palace are for boats in the early years. Other supporting spaces are waterfront square, promenade area and retails.

In order to accomplish the vision of the master plan, Verdant Oasis, this particular site contains several administrative buildings and the needs to diversify its programmes to make it more attractive towards people of Johor. Focusing on the Royal Family of Johor as the playmaker, to develop this particular area, the main challenge is on how to main the privacy context of the royal assets but still inviting the public to flow in. The context is divided into three main classes which are administration, transportation and commercial.

Edu-tainment is an approach to reawaken the district within the school area. Known as a dead district on weekends, the proposal space will help to regain it popularities. Using a grid system as a main structure for planning with the help of elevated bridge for students to fully utilizing it. In 2070, with a world using fully VR system publicly in daily life, new type of education used in JB where most of the studies are personalized.
