Obituary Daphne Arabella Laing-Glinton by D'Asante Beneby

After a written letter to her father Mr. Jarvis Glinton, On October 23rd, 1957 Daphne married Hermes Emile Laing a Farm Road boy. Mr. Glinton’s words to Hermes was “This is My Last Slice Of Bread” meaning you are to take good care of her. From that union they produced five children Desiree, Lorenzo, Hermes Jr., La’Donna and Daphne. As a mother Daphne always kept her children near to her. She was a nurturer and her children became her world. She would always quote the song writer “Can a woman’s tender care Cease toward the child she bare? Yes, she may forgetful be Yet will I remember thee.” Daffie was their very own superwoman draped in Proverbs 31. She was their nurse, disciplinarian, teacher, provider, chef, protector, confidant and cheerleader. She instilled in them a strong work ethic, commitment to family and unwavering faith. Daff was the definition of a mother’s love.

The Friday before her death, she shared in her final moment with all five of her children. As ‘Hermie’ was ordained Rev’d Deacon Hermes Laing II she witnessed gleefully and whispered to him, ‘I can now rest.’

In 1987, Daffie suffered another loss as her beloved sister Robertha passed away. When Bertha, as she affectionately caller he sister, passed she ensured to maintain a closeness with her nieces and nephews being there when they needed her.

Daphne became an entrepreneur at an early age; as a young woman she opened a grocery store located on Wulff Road almost diagonal to St. Barnabas Church. Later she moved to a location in Pine Dale where the neighborhood families would purchase and many times “Trust” to feed their families and pay at a later date. In 1974, after consultation with her eleven year-old daughter, La’Donna, Daphne decided to take on a Career as an Insurance Agent with Family Guardian Insurance Company. Years later she made history by becoming the first female Staff Manager in that organization. In 1979, Daphne soared to higher heights and became employed with Dominion Life Assurance Company where she was consistently rated one of the High Achievers. In 1988 Daphne along with her second son Hermes decided to partnership and expand the family business “Blue Moon Centre Bar” and later she became the proprietor of a second Business called “Blue Moon Take Away” both business she ran until her demise. Around the ‘shop’ and on her errands to various businesses, Daffie was known as ‘mum,’ ‘Ms. Laing,’ and ‘Lady D.’ Many had the opportunity to interact with her, chat with her, laugh with her and surely discuss politics with her.

Daff’s life within the PLP began during her teenage years in 1955. Her father Jarvis Logan Glinton attended political meetings on the Southern Recreation grounds, which led to the party’s Majority Rule. By witnessing her father’s involvement and the change within the country Daphne was motivated to do her part and get involved. In the historical election of 1962 Daphne was one of the first women privileged to register and vote. Daphne felt both honored and obligated to vote as she was setting the example for her daughters and generations of her family to come. In 1965 Daphne also participated in the movement that lead to Black Tuesday. Her participation in the Progressive Liberal Party was more than for party affiliation but doing what was right for the betterment of her country. After the 1992 election defeat Daphne Glinton was called along with other women by Lady Marguerite Pindling to join together in reuniting and rejuvenating the Women’s Branch of the PLP. Since then Daphne Glinton has been a devoted member to the Women’s Branch and was always a devoted member to the party. As a member of the Marathon constituency she has been diligent in supporting the Marathon Branch and is a former executive board member of the Marathon Branch. She would always lend a hand in campaigning and supporting party representatives within her area, talking with her fellow neighbors of the proven record of the PLP and instilling the importance of voting in upcoming elections. In 1999 Ms. Daphne Glinton was honored to be selected as a Stalwart Council member, which signified for her that her dedication to the PLP was recognized.

Whether you would see her at rallies with her family, riding around her truck ordained with paraphernalia with the grand children or even at Blue Moon she would always let you know she was a proud PLP, All the way! In the past 5 years as D’Asante and Davin followed in her political footsteps becoming active in the Progressive Young Liberals she was assured that her legacy would proudly continue.

Affectionately known as Grammy by her grandkids, it was a title she wore with honor and was proud to tell all about her grandchildren’s latest accomplishments and activities. Her grandchildren were the apple of her eye. She was always there to cook their favorite meal the way only Grammy could, to nurse any sickness, front row of every graduation and supported every activity.

Through life's many ups and downs, Daphne was always a pillar of strength for her family. Whether through her own challenges or through individual challenges Daffie always offered an encouraging word or invaluable wisdom. In 1995, Daphne underwent major heart surgery and with her recovery she demonstrated her resilience and undeniable strength. She was always independent, strong-willed and hard working.

“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised,” Proverbs 31 v. 30. Daff deserves all the praise as the matriarch of her family; she was a prayer warrior and a faithful servant of the Lord. As a longtime member of St. Barnabas Parish she encouraged her children and grand children to love and serve the Lord. On Wednesday January 28th 2015, God called his faithful servant Daphne home. Peacefully, Daffie left this Earth to be with the Father to take her well-deserved rest. She will be remembered for the infectious laugh, radiant smile and undeniable beauty and grace.

Daphne Arabella Laing nee Glinton was the third child of three born to the late Jarvis Logan Glinton from O’Neal’s Long Island and the late Arabella Clothilda Laroda-Glinton from Cedar Harbour. On October 26th, 1940 on Mackey Street in the heart of the “Valley” a beautiful and fearless warrior gracefully entered the world and her journey on earth would mightily impact the lives of all she touched. Affectionately known as “Daffie” or “Daff” to her family and close friends, her early years were spent in Strachan’s Corner with “the Glintons” and through Rupert Dean TO Lane with her Aunt and Uncle “the Larodas”. She spent her childhood TRIBUTE doing everything she loved; from shooting marbles to skipping rope, playing jacks to enjoying native fruit and surely enjoyed long bike rides. She attended the Orthodox School located on Cole Lane, off Mackey Street and She was, Worrell School located on Bay Street. TRIBUTE TO

Grammy, Once upon a time you probably thought you were done raising kids, You figured youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d earned a little peace. Then you found yourself being a parent again. Well lucky for us, you were up to the challenge because we got the benefit of your wisdom and tender heart. We know we must have been a handful at times and you always made us feel that your was unconditional and our home was a happy place to be. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re the best grandmother anybody could ever ask for. We love you and will miss you.

But then I fully realized, That this could never be, For emptiness and memories, Would take the place of me. When tomorrow starts without me, And I'm not there to see, If the sun should rise and find your eyes All filled with tears for me; I wish so much you wouldn't cry The way you did today, While thinking of the many things, We didn't get to say.
