THE GIRLY GUY MENSWEAR F/W 17

When describing a woman who is super feminine they are refer to as a “girly girl”. In the future it will be the grily guy. The more feminine version of a traditional masculine style. Throughout history we have seen men appear both super masculine with the use of stiff silhouettes, and dark colors. We’ve also seen them appear a lot more feminine with brighter colors, loud patterns and looser silhouettes, however we’ve never seen a perfect balance between the two worlds, but we will very soon. Inspired by Romanticism and women. The Girly Guy, will become the future style of post millennial men. With the help of art, music, and celebrities like, Frank Ocean, Young Thug, Pharrell and Jaden Smith people, specifically the younger generation are becoming more open and accepting of fashion that would have once been considered too feminine at one point and time.

COLOR STORY

With this new Girly Guy trend there will be more pastels than ever before. Due to the fact that this trend is a mixture of both feminine and masculine, there will not be super bright feminine colors or all dark muted color. Instead there will be a blend that adds color without being over the top. Of course the staple colors like; black, brown and blue however, these new shades of; beige, pinks, purple,and blue will give off that more feminine look, while still appearing masculine. This color palette also makes it the perfect look and trend for the winter. During the winter dark colors like purple, greys become a lot more prominent. While during the summer colors tend to include bright yellows, oranges, and blues. As far as how the colors would be worn together, there will be a mix of having these colors serve as accent colors and the traditional colors be prominent and other times it will be 12

FABRICS, DETAILS,TRIMS

Inspired by Romanticism, softer more feminine fabrics such as silk and lace will be the new addition that bring this Girly Guy trend to life. These mixed with traditional cottons and denims will create the perfect balance between the two worlds. As of now lace and silk are making a comeback in womenswear. This whole notion of romanticism is being brought back up and people are steering away from the rough oversized super masculine look. Due to the fact that it’s being seen a lot in womenswear it’s clear that it will be making an appearance in menswear as well. As far as trimmings and detailing go they will remain similar to what is out there now. Minimal subtle details that won’t be to out super out there because again the looks will still have a more masculine look and the feminine look will be seen more in the fabrics and prints.

SILHOUETTES When it comes silhouettes they will remain pretty much the same with slight variations. Most of the ‘Girly Guy’ trend will have simple traditional silhouettes and the fun will come into play with the fabric and pattern choice. This is an example of how the a man would wear a shirt like this. Instead of wearing just a white button down they would rather wear a simple structured button down with a cool funky pattern. With a couple of the buttons undone.Androgeny has become a lot more popular so this will be nothing to the fashion world. It’s suttle changes like this that will make ‘the Girly Guy’ transition come to life.

Another silhouette similar to the first one is this oversized button down. Again taking a traditionally masculine style ( a button down shirt) and making it more feminine by elongating it. For the most part with this new Girly Guy trend there will be a few alterations to the the silhouettes that are popular now with slight adjustments like the color or they will be exactly the same and the fabric choice and prints will add the feminine quality.

WHO IS THE GIRLY GUY?

The ‘Girly Guy’ age ranges between 18-25, their style would be described as minimal for the most part. They have found the perfect balance between mixing both feminine and masculine pieces together without favoring one over the other. One day they might be inclined to wear an all black with a more feminine silhouette and the next they might prefer a motorcycle jacket jeans and a silk shirt with a print. The ‘Girly Guy’ would be described as an early adopter, playing with the idea being more masculine with a few feminine tendencies. They are not afraid of being judged because they know it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the world catches on.They would probably even go as far a picking up an item from the women’s section if they thought they could make it work. The Girly Guy, would likey be found in a city like NY Brooklyn to be exact is middle class and considers themselves an artist. 18

Prepster Womenswear SS 18

Preppy style has a youthful, bright spirit, as it originated from the desire to fit in to sports clubs and cliques in ivy league universities and high schools across the East Coast. While inspired by European fashion, preppy style fulfills the desire of belonging, mainly to American cultures and groups. The collegiate style will unite American women together in the Spring/Summer 2018. In 2018, preppiness will be viewed as a cutting-edge trend like never before. Leading a preppy lifestyle enables mass customization and gives women the freedom to identify as feminine, masculine or androgynous. Having the ability to look classy yet glamourous will empower women to find structure in a world that continues to grow more chaotic by the minute.

OVERVIEW What does it mean to appear preppy? Many will claim the preppy woman can be seen wearing collared and button down shirts or button down, pullover, and cable knit cardigans. A preppy student wears sweater vests with pleated skirts and dazzles off the look by flaunting combinations of statement prints like plaid, argyle, checks, stripes, spots, or florals. Her textiles commonly range from cotton, to cableknit, cashmere, and tweed. A prepster is also identified by her footwear: high boots, riding boots, loafers, boat shoes, and duck shoes. For extra style and emphasis the fashion-forward, all-indulging prepster, takes her style to new heights with knee highs, thigh highs, and stockings. She is obvious to spot in her horseriding pants. When worn right, even these are considered fashionable. Her shorts, skirts, and dresses are scalloped for fun, while she has fully pressed blazers on standby for work. One is certain she has encountered a prep when the observed individual flaunts particular embellishments. Specifically she wears scarves as neckties, circular patches on long sleeves, bows on blouses and/or in the hair, pins, brooches, and headbands. Lastly, but of course, this woman smiles from ear to ear, at the mere thought of monograms.

Certain stores pride themselves on their preppy style. Preppiness is the hallmark of stores like JCrew, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Lily Pulitzer. There are always women who dress preppy at given points in time, however, preppiness is not always trending or viewed as “in style” amongst the masses. In 2016, preppy is not “in style”. Yet, the items that are currently trending amongst the majority of females, hint at a the reemergence of preppy style in the future, specifically, for Spring/Summer 2018.

ANALYSIS: CURRENT TRENDS FOR FUTURE FORECAST

Items that have been in the mainstream in 2016 hint at preppiness. In the mainstream women have been seen wearing bomber jackets, varsity jackets, athletic wear as work wear, and patches. Preppy style was initially distinguished as ivy league or prep school style. The garments mentioned can be viewed as extensions of school uniforms and logos. Long, pleated skirts in all different colors, but mainly bold hues, have also been trending. As we know, the masses eventually grow tired of trends and move on to the next. We should therefore see these skirts start to shorten in Autumn/Winter 2017. Like they did in the 1960s, they will probably rise and get even shorter so that they are “mini” by Spring/ Summer 2018. While the skirts get shorter, the pleats will remain, because pleats are preppy, and preppy garments and accessories of all kinds will be trending at this time. Furry gucci slippers have also been incredibly popular this past season. What is the next step? Loafers. The women spotted wearing loafers and oxfords this past season are a step ahead of the game. Additionally women have been seen wearing duck shoes and high riding-style boots. These sightings are clues as to what is coming in 2018. The pantsuit for women has trended in 2016. Pantsuits are classic, so it makes sense blazers and trench coats are on several ready to wear runways as staples for Spring/ Summer 2017. Combined with bomber and varsity jackets, patches, and athletic wear, the pantsuit’s popularity suggests that androgyny is trending. Women are wearing stereotypical mens clothing, claiming it for themselves. This was what happened when preppy style first evolved for women: it is understood that the girls borrowed from the guys. Perhaps the majority of women will grow tired of all the androgynous trends and feel inclined to purchase more feminine looking items. The great part of preppy style though, is that it can be styled to make women appear feminine, masculine, or androgynous.

ITâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S IN THE AIR: LOOKING AT THE PAST AND PRESENT To UNDERSTAND THE FUTURE

COLOR STORY Despite the fact that colors go in and out of style, it is a common theme that colors tend to be lighter, brighter, and warmer in the spring and summer seasons versus the fall and winter. Key colors for the preppy trend in spring will be russet orange, pink, and vibrant yellow, because spring and summer are bright and cheery. Amongst this color palette, navy and a gray blue tone down poppy hues to keep the overall color story collegiate looking. I am inspired by the overlap between preppy patterns and interiors like the subway station, brick walls, and steel. The color of these materials will provide a framework for understanding a color story for Spring/Summer 2018.

In some form, primary colors tend to come back in style in the spring. Additionally, companies like Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger primary colors appear to be the essential hues of their collections. This is also evidenced in the color of their logos. While not exactly forecasting red, white, and blue, one can see yellow, pink, and navy being a successful color combination for preppy clothing. This color combination can be perceived as an offshoot of the primaries.

FABRICS, DETAILS, TRIMS FABRICS: In terms of fabrics and textures, a preppy look can be characterized as simple and tailored, basic, but classic. For preppy menswear textiles might be more straightforward and predictable while textiles for womenswear can be a little edgier and fresh. The cellulosic fiber, cotton, will be used to lay the foundation for cardigans and pleated miniskirts. For women of high enough socioeconomic status, the type of cotton used to make their cardigans and plaid minis will be wrinkle-resistant. Fashion leaders such as bloggers, models, and celebrities might sport sateen minidresses with collars, since that material gives off an extra shine and hints at some glitz and glamour. Lightweight linen blazers should be popular for working women and the seasons weekend go-to shorts and pants will be khaki. TRIMS: Anticipated staple trims include pleats and scalloped shorts, skirts, tops, and dresses. Be on the look out for built-in belts on cardigans. SILHOUETTES In the Spring/Summer 2018, one should expect to see women wearing sweater vests as sleeveless tops. Women will wear these woven or knitted tops loosely, to distinguish themselves as preppy while being distinctively edgy. A cotton cable knit can sometimes take the place of classic blazers we see forecasted on the runway for Spring/Summer 2017. Cable knits are primary staples of preppy and worn with light, stretchy, khaki pants (as pictured), can provide warmth on cold New England evenings.

CONSUMER PROFILE

The ideal female prepster is from New England, generally from neighborhoods like Greenwhich, Connecticut, Short Hills, New Jersey, or the Upper East Side in New York City. She is of high socioeconomic status and she is married. She is between ages 25 and 35. She is a stay at home wife and/or mom, a workout enthusiast and health nut. She believes in natural therapies, manicures and pedicures, massages, and other luxuries. She takes an interest in yachting and sailing, mostly sunbathing while her husband takes hold of the rudder, but still knows how to steer because her father taught her how when she was young. Her father also supported her ambitions to receive the highest levels of education possible and excel, not just succeed. She owns a house in Newport, Rhode Island or Nantucket, Massachusetts and is a member of at least one beach club. The ideal prepster appears young and eager, excited and healthy. She embodies the American dream of being wealthy and living comfortably. She is undoubtedly classy and elegant and never too fazed or overwhelmed by challenges. At least, this woman not let her stress show in the public eye. While she takes comfort in adventuring and learning she is proud of her roots and happiest when relaxing with family at home.

Space Cadet Menswear SS 18

Humans did not walk on the moon until 1969, but their imminent arrival was marked on the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s calendar from the very beginning of the decade. Space explorationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grip on the popular extractions of aliens and living on the moon during the 1960s contributed to a new fashion philosophy, becoming a pool of design inspiration; an analog to speculation about a radically transformed future that preoccupied the sensibilities of the decade. Where the thought of space age comes to life and has people of alternate universes wanting you to dress like them.

Color Story

This future-looking optimism was not lost on the world of fashion. Space-age silver was mixed with primary colored prints taken from pop art, to create new, alien-looking pallettes. Novel fashion materials were introduced, which included shiny, wet-look PVC, easy-care acrylics and polyesters. The holographic and chromatic looks are a mixture of all the colors in the spectrum and illuminates the prints when diffracted by light. This color pallette brings a broad range of high and low saturations that when pressed against a silver background demonstrates a futuristic and robotic look.

Fabrics, details, Trims Sleek and stiff, space age fashion emulated the aerodynamic simplicity and severity of a space capsule. Frills and flings were created in favor of a new, hard-edged and streamlined silhouette that also incorporated industrial materials such as steels and metals. Space age fashion created a blunt and frequently shocking new universe within the 1960s fashion stream. Space age fashion was above all a French phenomenon, mostly by men in their thirties who had been trained in the old-guard Paris couture in the late 60s, but saw the need to refute some of their heritage. Now a vast majority of fabrics and trims are plastic, foils, and spandex all processed to carry the design of holographic prints. Vibrant colors and sparkles are added to several of the fabrics as key details of making a chromatic style.

Silhouttes Standard outwear jackets and urban menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s style with a holographic twist of colors and textures. By adding this print it completely changes the dynamic of the uniform and aspect of traditional looks. The elongated t-shirt was a trend for urban men usually in cool tone grays and blacks accompanied with the occasional rips and burns to style ruggedness.

These silhouettes are forms of menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lines that can be transparent to any style or shape. The When thinking of the space age fashion, oxygen helmets and moon boots come into perspective, but with the holographic pattern it completely changes the dynamic of stereotypical thinking that futuristic clothing brings.

MEET MR. SPACE CADET

The “ Space Cadet” males are between the ages of 18-24 years, their style would be described as bionic and futuristic. We would see this guy through the streets of Brooklyn becoming the center of attention as every flicker of light is reflecting off their spectacular outfits. He is an official trendsetter that is daring and sees his life as a work of art. He is not afraid to work with colors and with his own artistic ability shows the world that with the use of technology and one’s self there could be a lot discovered. 52
