ARTISAN HOMEWARE

about us Dassie was founded in 2012 by husband and wife team David and Roxi Zeeman, based on their collective career experience and global travels. It was launched after finding a lack of unique, handmade, feel good homeware available in the UK. Taking inspiration from the worlds of fashion, different cultures and their African roots, Dassie is committed to offering their customers handmade treasures that are lovingly created by talented artisans. Each item is representative of the hard work and skills developed over generations; woven with ounces of culture and years of heritage. Dassie are continuing to grow organically whilst remaining socially and environmentally responsible.

fair trade At Dassie, Fairtrade principles are at the core of everything we do. Our mission is to build relationships with, and promote the work of talented artisans in developing countries by bringing their creations to a wider market. We seek to empower these artisans to make a living from their skills and create better lives for themselves. We are proud to be a member of BAFTS (British Association of Fair Trade Shops). As members of BAFTS we adhere to their Ten Principles of Fair Trade and work to support their aims. Their principles seek to create opportunities for disadvantaged producers by means of fair trade practices and accountability. This entails payment of a fair wage, no child or forced labour, gender equity, lack of discrimination, good working conditions, and respect for the environment.

dassie symbols To guide informed and inspired conscious consumerism, we have created the Dassie Symbols, to enable our customers to learn and understand the humble beginnings of each of our unique products. All of our creations have a story to tell and we want to share them with you. Look for the icons on our products and use our guide to find out more.

Made by artisans working in small businesses in developing countries in Africa with high unemployment rates. Allowing them to use their skills to earn a fair living and support their families and local community.

Made under fair wages and in fair working conditions, supporting the development of working communities all over the world and adhering to the principles of fair trade.

Produced with no harmful adverse effects on the environment. Kind to the earth.

Created by hand, a true testament to the skills and hard work of the artisans who produce it. Each item is one-of-a-kind and truly unique. No two will ever be identical, which is their real beauty.

Crafted using traditional mouth blown glass making techniques.

Produced using century old, traditional techniques, which are learned and passed down through generations. These techniques are regionally specific.

ARTISAN HOMEWARE

|

Created and directed in a cooperative structure, with proceeds reinvested into the community to enable self-sustainability and economic development.

Made predominantly by women.

Pure. Produced from raw materials derived from living matter.

Produced using recycled or reclaimed materials that have been salvaged and reconditioned for reuse. This process has a positive impact on the environment and minimalises the flow of waste to landfills.

An absolute original. One of a kind, with a true sense of history and authenticity.

Made from organic or bio-based fibres using organic processes throughout every step of textile production. This process avoids the use of harmful bleaches, dyes, and finishes.

Made using Mango Wood. Mango trees can grow to between 20-30 metres high, but as the tree approaches this side, they become more difficult to harvest and eventually stop bearing fruit completely. On mango plantations, before the trees reach this size, they are replaced with

young mango trees and the harvested wood is an additional source of income for mango farmers. The tree is cut and replanted every 7-15 years, continuing a sustainable cycle that ensures there is no harm to the environment.

ARTISAN HOMEWARE

meet the maker What is your name and age?

What’s the best thing about your job?

My name is Benson Mutavi Mutua and I am 30 years old.

It is a job that I love and like doing. It is easy to learn and I have been able acquire new skills and designs as I work. I have developed a passion for it.

What is your job title? My job title I can say is bone art specialist or bone carver. Where do you live? And who with? I live in Chaani which is in Changamwe Constituency, Mombasa county. I live alone. How did you end up working where you work? After completing primary education my parents could not afford to take me to secondary school or to a vocational college due to poverty that was in our family. I was forced to stay at home helping with house hold chores and farm work. Due to harsh climate and poor rainfall, the harvests were bad and poverty was biting too much. I therefore decided to migrate to the urban centre in search of job in order to earn a livelihood and help my parents and siblings back at home. That’s how I ended up working here.

How did you learn the skills for your job? Were they taught to you by someone/self taught etc. I was taught the skills by other artisans whom I met here. They were willing and supportive. I have acquired more skills and designs on my own since then. Tell us your favourite hobbies outside of work? I like spending my free time watching action packed movies. What’s your favourite meal? I like ugali and sukuma wiki (maize meal and kales). I also like drinking tea. I can drink it 6 times in a day. Anything else interesting you can tell me about yourself? I am friendly and likes making new friends. I also like learning and trying new things and that has helped me to enhance my skills and product designs.

textiles Each of our bohemian Kantha Throws has been hand-stitched by female artisans in their homes, in rural parts of India. Each vintage throw is created from up-cycled sari and is finished with traditional Kantha hand-stitching to give a handworked, antique feel. Our Kantha Throws are a testament to the talent and hard-work of the ladies who make them. Each throw is in vintage condition and has imperfections, which give them their true unique beauty.

furniture & seating The Malawian Cane Chair is a traditional cane chair made from cane roots and bamboo, and shaped with the rim of old bicycles. It is believed the skills and techniques to make these products have been passed down through generations of tribes that live along the river, originating back to the 1700-1800’s. Around this time, British Missionaries who had come to abolish the slave trade introduced vocational training. With the abundance of raw materials, the locals were taught to weave. This was a deliberate alternative to the slave trade, and equipped communities with the necessary skills to make a living and depend for themselves. The cane roots used to make our Malawian Cane Chairs is unwanted by farmers and instead of being burnt to dispose of it, the raw materials are sold to local artisans who are then able to make these beautiful chairs.

stationery Our Growing Paper collection is created on a farm at the foot of the Paardeberg, a beautiful setting with a full view of Table Mountain, in South Africa. Each card, tag and calendar is handmade, starting with the collection of post consumer paper from local schools, banks and other businesses. This paper is then processed into pulp, by adding only water. From this pulp the artisans produce handmade sheets. These sheets are then dried in a tunnel and embedded with either alyssum or poppy flower seeds or basil and wild rocket herb seeds. These seeds will grow as soon as you plant and nurture them with the necessary water, sun and love.
