Iron Mountain
Founded in 1951
CEO: William Meaney http://www. ironmountain. com https://www.linkedin. com/ company/ iron-mountain/
Iron Mountain was founded in 1951 by Herman Knaust in Livingston, New York. Known as the "Mushroom King," Knaust purchased an iron ore mine and land in 1936 for his mushroom-growing business - but in 1950, had a vision to repurpose the mine and named it "Iron Mountain."
After World War II, Knaust sponsored the relocation of Jewish immigrants with records lost during the war. This, along with concerns about the Cold War, inspired him to focus on protecting vital information, leading to the founding of Iron Mountain Atomic Storage, Inc. in 1951. The first vaults were built inside Iron Mountain and a sales established in the Empire State Building.
By 1978, Iron Mountain had established its first above-ground records storage facility in New York, and expanded further by opening a site in New England in 1980 which catered to the requirement for computer backup data protection. The acquisition of New England Storage Warehouse in Boston in 1983 strengthened its position in the medical and legal records management markets.
In 1988 Iron Mountain acquired Bell & Howell Records Management, leading to Iron Mountain becoming a national service provider. Today, it is a global leader in storage and information management services, serving 170,000 customers in 37 countries.
Its data centre arm operates a global colocation platform that enables customers to build tailored, sustainable, carrier, and cloud-neutral data solutions. The company leads the industry in highlyregulated compliance, environmental sustainability, physical security, and business continuity.
Iron Mountain is listed on the New York Stock Exchange as IRM, part of the S&P 500, and is a member of the Fortune 1000 - a successful reflection of Herman Knaust's vision back in 1951 and demonstrates the company's decades-long commitment to protecting vital information.
