How to Recover Data From Broken Hard Disk Drive Computer hard drives are amazingly clever bits of hardware that provide the foundation for computing. Technically they’re called hard disk drives (HDD) and consist of spinning disks, or platters, that store information in blocks. This information is your photos, music, work documents, email and everything else your store on your computer.

How to Recognize the Signs of Imminent Hard Drive Failure Strange noises – sometimes you might hear strange grinding noises which might suggest your drive is beyond repair. But that said, the motor might have failed or the bearings that the drive spins on might be grinding. Whatever it is, it’s time to act quickly. Disappearing data – If data disappears or you can’t save documents it may mean that your drive is struggling. There could be other reasons like a virus but these are symptomatic of a failing drive.

How to recover failed drives Is it the drive or something else? Sometimes, a drive failure isn’t a drive failure it can be the cables that connect the drive with the computer’s motherboard that have come loose. Make sure the data and power cables are firmly connected on both ends. Printed circuit boards? Sometimes hardware connected to the drive can fail such as the printed circuit board (PCB). In theory you can simply swap the PCB boards but if you’re unsure you might want to get an expert to do it – if you don’t know what you are doing you could inadvertently wipe all the data on the drive.
