Helsinki cenral library Location: Helsinki, FInland academic project semester 8 individual project Evaluation: 10 out of 10 Project year: 2012 Supervisor: Gintautas Blaziunas (bg@archprojektas.lt) The project was undertaken both at the programme of Vilnius Gediminas Techinical University as a final thesis project and also as the proposal for the library competition, held by the city of Helsinki. The designed building is in the special territory in the city – in the very heart of Helsinki, next to Finlandia Hall, Parliament House, Helsinki Music Centre, Kiasma Museum and other significant objects. It was very important to blend the building in the urban tissue, enrich the cityscape of Helsinki and to create a welcoming environment for the visitors. Besides the regular library functions, there is also a cinema hall, conference hall, café, restaurant, sauna and other functions. The aim was to create a platform like a bookshelf in which the functions could be freely placed, reorganised, changed, removed or new functions could be introduced. There were no spaces designed especially for one or another function. No function was given to the spaces in advance. The goal was to create a raw building which could be as free as possible. All the spaces should be just spaces - generic spaces – but not specific spaces. Flexibility in the library is achieved by the creation of generic floors on which almost any activity can occur. Programs are not separated, rooms or individual spaces not given unique characters. The activities in the library coexist together and take place side by side.

Rasos Location: Vilnius, Lithuania professional project together with PLAZMA architecture studio Project year: 2012-2013 Project team: Rytis Mikulionis, Povilas Daugis, Gytis Vaitkevicius, Paulius Paskacimas Personal imput: major input at design stages, presentation material, technical drawings Supervisor: Rytis Mikulionis rytis@plazma.lt The project contains 4 semidetached houses located in beautiful natural environment. The building are desinged ontop of existing ammunition bunkers from WWII. In order to protect the bunkers, the houses were lifted up and put on steel legs. This solution also helps to catch the sun. Most of the architectural language was given in advance - the site belongs to regional park, which has its own regulations regarding new architecture. The regulations include the materials, shape of the roof, height. Despite of that, we tried to suggest something modern and new, but also contextual.

concept The site contains 4 underground ammunition bunkers from WWII. The entrances to the storages are to be protected although the detail plan allows construction only where the protected walls are. The solution was to design the buildings on ‘legs’ - the buildings are elevated, the storages remain untouched and exposed.

project development Even in the early stages of the project the 3D rendering technique was used extensively to help the client to imagine the project. Each major change in the design was visualised both for the client and for ourselves to double-check the design solutions. Renderings by Povilas Daugis

soho beauty salon interior Location: Vilnius, Lithuania professional project together with PLAZMA architecture studio Personal input: major input at all design stages, presentation material, technical drawings, construction supervision Project year: 2012 Supervisor: Rytis Mikulionis rytis@plazma.lt Photography: Leonas Garbacauskas The SOHO beauty salon is located in the refurbished industrial building close to the city centre. The industrial context brings some roughness into the interior. Unrefined surfaces, concrete floor and ceiling, galvanized steel elements together create the pallete of black, white and grey. These shades act like a neutral background where the warmth of plywood, light and - of course - the beauty of people can stand out. Old refurbished armchairs, ceramic tiles and pendant lights create nostalgic atmosphere in the salon. The interior is spacious and the goal was not to cram it with things, therefore the mirrors where hung on the ceiling, giving the effect of lightness and keeping the floor empty.

hotel. Renovation of the office building Location: Vilnius, Lithuania academic project semester 7 individual project Evaluation: 9 out of 10 Project year: 2011 Supervisor: Gintautas Blaziunas (bg@archprojektas.lt)

The automatic telephone station was originally designed in 1978 by lithuanian architect J. Seibokas. The design was awarded in USSR. The building is located in the old town of VIlnius. The central location is attracting lots of people and buisiness to the venue. Nowadays the building is used as the office by the Healthcare ministry and buisiness enterprises. The building is considered to be a valuable monument of modern architecture in the old town. Although, from the point of view of urban planning, the building is being often criticised. The building has demaged the urban structure of the old town and has created a new urban scheme which is not a valuable part of VIlnius old town. The task of the project was to renovate the building adopting it to the modern requirements. I chose to give a new function to the building - a hotel. A lot of attention was paid to the urban layout of the building to help it blend in the urban fabric of the city.

?

The existing building had a little square, but it did not served as it should. While shaping the volumetric form of the building, the main idea was to create a clearly defined closed public space.

The square was pushed inside the building. The volumes of the building were extended in order to surround the square and make it closed.

Inside the biggest volume appears an atrium. Atrium allows much more natural sunlight in and also is a public space of the building itself.

The final shape of the building seems to be more in-scale. The former square became an inner courtyard. Atrium makes the deep building much lighter.

mecca of wind Location: Svencele, Lithuania academic project semester 3 individual project Evaluation: 10 out of 10 Project year: 2009 Supervisor: Gintaras Stauskis (gintaras.stauskis@vgtu.lt) This project was the first asignment of urban design. The task was to create a recreation complex in the natural environment. The project includes the choise of the site, the research on the site, the urban design of the complex and the detailisation of some of the buildings. Svencele is the most popular kitesurfing spot in Lithuania. ‘Mecca of Wind’ is the complex designed especially for kitesurfers and windsurfers. The complex includes 2 facility buildings containing cafe, staff rooms, office, equipment storage and rental. Also, there are residential units for guests. The complex is located on a flat terrain, where winds is blowing constantly. The symbol of the straight line was very important in this project. Therefore, the complex has one straight street paralled to the shore of the Curonian lagoon. The other - perpendicular - axis is designated for movement (arrival -> kitesurfing). It connects the facility buildings. In the intersection of the axes is the plaza for parties, award ceremonies or just chilling out. Next to the plaza there are dorm-type rooms for the youth. From here the houses become more private. At the both ends of the street there are larger and most private houses for families.
