Sabaliauskas The buildings in the higher part of the plot are elevated on slender columns in order to „catch the sun“ and leave the walls of historical vaults undisturbed. Meanwhile the buildings down the slope are lowered and provided with the yards on the creek bank. The houses are clad in wooden planks of different textures.

S T RU C T U R E ELEVATED houses are designed along the street in the southern part of the plot. These buildings are set between the retaining walls of the ammunition vaults or placed above their cornices. These buildings are paired around outside staircases. The houses are elevated to ensure the free access to the historical vaults and their visibility from the street. The pairs of houses correspond to the pairs of entrances to the

vaults. These houses have regular plans, traditional pitched roofs and are rotated according to the orientation of the vaults‘ facades. The northern side of the street is shaped by the intermittent perimeter of LOWERED houses. 10 separate buildings with regular plans and pitched roofs connect two terraces: the bank of the creek and the street. Due to the difference of terrain they seem to be 1 storey high from the street and two storey high when observed from the lower terrace. Retaining walls between the houses separate the places for cars on the street level and private terraces below.

H A R M O N Y

Traditional archetypical silhouette of the buildings is supplemented by moderate contemporary details and elements. Shapes are lightened by abstract volumes of bay windows and skylights. The complex of houses is harmonized by uniform materialization: buildings are clad in wood planks of several different textures, influenced by local traditions. Homogenous architectural details, scale and color of the buildings enhance the idea of unity even further. The perspective of the street is not obstructed, but rather extending into the valley of Ribiskes landscape reserve.

MIDWAY AIRPORT is a second airport in Chicago after O’Hare. Although Midway works efficiently and profitably, the entire success is based on Southwest Airlines which saved Midway from closing down. Currently Southwest Airlines operate more than 90% of all flights in Midway. Dependency on Southwest is beneficial, but risky. Midway airport sits in west Chicago surrounded by residential houses just across the street from all four sides. The noise that Midway brings to the neighbourhood cost a substantial amount of money. Every house and school that is within the 65 DNL noise contour are eligible for sound insulation program. Every year $ 20 million is spent on making the buildings bearable to live in. So far it cost $ 350 million. In 2014 the landing routes were slightly changed and brought noise to new areas that did not experience noise before. 1800 more houses were added to the sound insulation program as eligible for financing. The first insulated houses are already old and require refurbishment.

Chicago is well known as an industrial city. Within today’s context of industrial reshorIng and increasing manufacturing costs in China, Chicago has a possibility to re-establish itself as an industrial capital of US. One of the main obstacles - lack of industrial land. The site of Midway airport carries a huge potential of becoming a new industrial corridor for Chicago. It is surrounded by industrial sites, has well developed infrastructure. The site is accessible by planes, trains, trucks and water. Clearing Yard - one of the biggest train classification yards - is right next to it. Midway would be 10th biggest industrial corridors in Chicago. The air freight is forecast to grow over 300 % in the next 40 years. At the moment Midway airport cannot expand due to its specific urban context, O’hare is already enormous. Chicago has to look for another way to meet the increasing air freight volume.

Į pastatą patenkama 3 metrų pločio tilteliu, paviršiumi ir sujungia stovėjimo aikštelę Iškart patenkama į pagrindinį pastato holą, holą atsiveria konferencijų centro, restora prieigos, iš čia matomas visas muzieja telkinys. Holo erdvė liejasi per tris auk laiptais pakilus į antrąjį aukštą, lankytoja ekspozicijų erdves trečiajame tūryje. Ketv jų laukia pastovių ekspozicijų erdvės, i pirmajame aukšte esančią parodų erdvę a su lauko ekspozicija po pastoge.

Muziejaus funkcinė struktūra yra ai skirtingais tūriais, kuriuos jungia riedulių tarnaujanti kaip akustinė priemonė, komunikacines bei pagalbines erdves. V sutelktos restorano pagalbinės patalpo vertikalieji ryšiai, o rytinėje dalyje – adminis

The SOHO beauty salon is located in the refurbished industrial building close to the city centre.

Old refurbished armchairs, ceramic tiles and pendant lights create nostalgic atmosphere in the salon.

The industrial context brings some roughness into the interior. Unrefined surfaces, concrete floor and ceiling, galvanized steel elements together create the pallete of black, white and grey. These shades act like a neutral background where the warmth of plywood, light and - of course - the beauty of people can stand out.

The interior is spacious and the goal was not to cram it with things, therefore the mirrors where hung on the ceiling, giving the effect of lightness and keeping the floor empty.
