OUTLOOK

Conneaut scored 28.3 points per game last season, which ranked fifth among Class 3A schools in District 10. The Eagles, however, struggled to slow teams down on defense. Conneaut allowed 42 points or more in its five losses last fall, including a 48-8 loss to Mercyhurst Prep in the D-10 quarterfinals.

Conneaut will have some key players to replace because of graduation, including all-region selections Peyton Hearn (running back), Kyle Sheets (wide receiver, defensive back, punter), Mahlon Schmidt (defensive line) and Chad Jones (offensive line). Hearn ran for 1,403 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior, while Sheets ran for 700 yards and 13 touchdowns and passed for 535 yards and four touchdowns.

Sheets moved to wide receiver late in the season as Tanner Niemann took over under center. Niemann is back and could start at quarterback or return to wide receiver after throwing for 367 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 229 yards and three touchdowns last year. Eli Boyce is back at wide receiver, while Noah Richardson returns at tight end and Mason Mihoci at slot receiver. Keith Palko, Zach Kehl and Trevor Tursky are also back on the line.

Devin Neal, Max Lewandowski and Braden Groover could all battle for carries to replace Hearn in the backfield, while Nate Bortnick, Jayden Onderko and Dylan Lehman could see time at wide receiver. Payden Ordos, Jesse Orr, Connor Schellman, Owen Petergol and Dan Morrow could compete for playing time on the offensive and defensive lines for the Eagles.

Conneaut will need to rebuild its defense to get back to contender status in the region and district. The Eagles were put into a tough region this cycle with some of the top teams in Mercer County. After Conneaut consolidated, a few years in a Mercer County region toughened the Eagles and led to a D-10 title. They are looking for the same result as they play in one of D-10’s top regions.
