GRAN ALACANT BOOK review by resident John Hannon

Out April 2013

A great guide to the area and would that would entice me to make a visit. Love the strap line “Europe meets Spain” Not too wordy, the photographs tell a great story without the need for much more. I would buy a well printed copy just for the pictures. If I rented my property I would be asking for permission to link it to my website...........I guess this is part of your intention Could easily be used by Communidad to promote the area and wouldnt take a lot of translation. Puts the work of others who have claimed they are promoting the area to shame. Available in English, Spanish, Swedish.

her love was shared between two deserving benefactors, Santa Pola and Jose Luis Llanos Madrigal, a charming and handsome young Spanish man who lived in the town and had helped her deal with her parents’ house purchase. Fiona is clearly still in love with both and the couple have continued to work together successfully ever since with Fiona adding, 'the secret for us is that we very rarely, if ever, talk about work when we are at home and this way we have the time to enjoy ourselves - especially now that the kids have grown up.' Jose and Fiona opened their first Victoria Estate Agent office in Calle Elche, Santa Pola in 1983 and began bringing out the first Brits to the area to buy homes after meeting the couple at exhibitions about Spain in the UK. Fiona & husband Jose talk about 30 years together in Spain who need perhaps a little more than a salesman’s banter and a whistle-stop tour of properties. And once a property is sold the service doesn't stop and Fiona, Jose and all the staff at Victoria are often to be found helping clients old and new with anything from deciphering a phone to looking for a kennel for the dog. They have seen and experienced a lot in those thirty years - including the sale of a hone to the parents of ex-Real Madrid idol Raul and a famous actress from the BBC's EastEnders programme. There has been some fun along the way too with Jose, as he was driving one day, informing his mother in law - who was by now convinced that perhaps this wasn’t the right man for her daughter - ' am going to fart...' when what he actually meant to ask was 'am I going too fast..?'

Queenie's only stipulation for releasing his vice-like grip on the scaffold was that Jose had to hold his hand all the way down, which he did. Luckily none of Jose’s friends found out about it though...until now. Gran Alacant's first ever estate agent, Victoria continues to look after expats in the area and are always open and ready for a friendly chat about life and living in this wonderful area. Pop in and see Fiona and Jose and the team who all speak English, you may even get to hold the handsome fellas hand yourself

One of the first things people say to me on their first visit is, ‘we didn’t know you could get support here’. Many people need support with anxiety, depression, loneliness, self-esteem, mental health problems or addictions and just don’t know where to go.

Raising awareness

Talking Therapies here in Quesada (near Torrevieja) and Hondon de los Frailes (near Aspe) does all of the above. Many people with serious mental health problems move in the hope that their problems will stay in the UK, sadly this does not happen and their problems travel with them. Here at Talking Therapies we support people with many issues, we support people either on a 1-2-1 basis with individual therapy or in group therapy. Both have their advantages in different ways. Individual therapy is just about you, to come and talk about your problems in a safe and confidential environment, individual therapy is 25 euro’s per hour. Group therapy has two advantages it shares the costs between everyone in the group. It deals with problems that the entire group have and although experiences can be shared it is not a ‘who’s got bigger problems hour’, it’s a session that gives you information on how to overcome your problems and gives you support in a positive way. Group therapy is 5 euro’s per session. The hardest thing about asking for help and talking to a therapist is, possibly facing your biggest fears, talking about what is wrong makes it very real, this is scary but, it will also make you feel better once you have shared your problems and start to get the correct support from what is holding you back from enjoying your life. Talking Therapies is here to support you, your family, your friends or anyone else you may know. We have cut costs to a bare minimum so therapy can be available to everyone. All Talking Therapies therapists are fully qualified, insured and legal.

All Talking Therapies therapist work towards personal development and are constantly updating their skills and education, so your needs can be met with up-to-date professionalism. Your first Talking Therapies session is free Please ring Liz on 633 161 555 or e-mail me liziesteward@hotmail.com or find us on FaceBook

MEETToldos THE LOCALS Penalver

ELCHE

I’ve known Joaquim Penalver for over ten years now and we have some great conversations at times comparing his rallying days and my motorcycle racing ones (he won a lot more silverware than I ever did...) but last month I managed to catch up with him, at his large workshop on the Carrus industrial estate in Elche, to find out a little about the man and his business, Toldos Penalver, which has successfully served expats and Spaniards for over thirty years on the Costa Blanca.

AS we sat in his office chatting (surrounded by his many trophies...) he told me how he and his wife had started the business in 1983 from the front room of their home in Elche. His wife Dolores would cut the fabric and prepare the blinds in the house while Joaquim would be out either fitting the blinds or selling and measuring up for a client’s order. Nowadays Toldos Penalver employs 18 staff and runs ten vehicles from its two workshops; one of which is run by Dolores in the centre of Elche, while his son meets clients and arranges orders and his two daughters, Raquel and Maria Dolores (who make a beautiful reception committee I might add) work in the sales office and deal with the day to day matters that a medium sized company such as this generates. There is a family connection all the way through the company with cousins, nephews, nieces and more helping to make up the friendly workforce. You will have seen the work, and probably the vans, of Toldos Penalver when you’ve been out

and about on the Costa Blanca, and perhaps, even sat underneath their handiwork in one, or two, of the many bars and restaurants that have employed their services. IF you’ve been to Santa Pola and strolled the prom and then stopped for refreshment in the large, round cafe, La Pena Grande then that is a fine example of their craft. The Polamar Hotel and the impressively huge Dos Ruedas bikers’ cafe in Elche which has an awning supplied by Joaquim and his team covering 200 square metres and costing over 20,000 euros but as I say, it is very impressive. Although they supply many businesses with various and varying types of blinds and awnings Toldos Penalver rely mainly on their private customers to keep them busy and in recent years that has obviously meant more and more foreigners with slightly differing requirements to their native hosts. As Joaquim explained, ‘The foreigners demand a little more than the Spanish in the respect that they require punctuality primarily but also they look closely at quality and design.’ I

Thirty years on and Joaquim and his family work the business daily with and alongside other like companies which makes for a friendly but still competitive marketplace that Toldos Penalver has contributed a significant amount of trade to. Customers are welcome to take a look at samples and working awnings (such as the smooth, silent, sleek model in the workshop - no, not the sisters...!) And take a look, and feel, at the options available to either businesses or private clients looking for some summer shade in their homes. All Abroad proudly recommends Toldos Penalver through ten years of association and experience of working together. IF you have any questions at all about awnings, blinds or any other products that Toldos Penalver offer give the guys a call on the numbers on the advert opposite. (P.s. mention this article and I reckon the Penalver family will find their way to giving you a special All Abroad discount!)

‘Thirty years on and

Joaquim and his family work the business daily’ asked how Toldos Penalver managed with the demands of expats to which Joaquim explained that he had always worked on the philosophy of arriving on time for appointments with customers and offering a service that means that the client gets the choice of quality and design that suits their budget but still means they will receive a product suitable for the job. Many is the time that I have passed on a client to Joaquim and he has been, gone and measured up before I make myself look daft by phoning said client, too late, to say Joaquim is on his way!

Another success story of expats in Spain This month Lindsay Drake tells her story

Toma Tours is a new boutique tour operator based in Andalucia. Manni Coe launched the company during the depths of the Spanish recession with a very clear goal in mind: to show people the “Spain they never knew”. Toma Tours are all about meaningful travel, discovering the very heart and soul of a destination in a way that big-bus tour operators just cannot achieve, after just 18 months they now rank #6 out of 286 activities in Andalucia on Tripadvisor Here is what Manni said about his new venture… - What did you do before you set up Toma? I was a Tour Director for 12 years with a couple of business ventures thrown in for good measure; a bar in Seville, a t-shirt company, a postcard series of scenic Andalucia… - When did you finally decide to set up touring on your own with Toma Tours? September 2011 - What made you decide to do it? To be able to concentrate on boutique tourism in Andalucia. I had been working as a guide for 12 years but felt increasingly limited by the Big Bus and the strict timetable. Toma is the antithesis to Mass Tourism - What does Toma represent? “Traditional Marvellous Morocco & Andalucia” - Our goal is to reveal the heart and soul of these places to our clients. All of our tours reveal hidden sides of the history and culture. Clients really feel as if they have enjoyed a privileged insight into local history and culture. One repeating client thanked us for “sharing the Spain I never knew...”

Expat creates a Spanish Tourism success story during the depths of crisis

- What made you believe it would work? I set the company up off the back of signing a contract with a large and established hotel chain - Marriott. Sealing that deal gave me the impetus to take the risk in the middle of the recession and crisis. - What was the hardest thing to overcome? Paperwork! Not my strong point! Bureaucracy...I got myself a great Gestora who guided me (and still guides me) through all the steps - Did you ever feel like giving in? Never - What has been your biggest achievement? Hosting a family reunion, and a fiftieth birthday celebration on a private yacht in Turkey. From just a little base knowledge of

“The best thing is that we share the same passion and think so much alike.”

- What do you feel the future holds for Toma? We don’t want to grow too much as the strength of our brand is exclusivity and small groups. There are only 2 guides so we can’t spread ourselves too thinly. I would love Toma to be a reference for people who are really seeking to explore and understand Andalucia from a cultural and artistic vantage point. - What advice would you give others ex-pats wanting to launch their own business? Seek excellent legal council. Source a need, identify a client profile or Avatar (we had great fun creating ours!) take a deep death, light a candle to the Virgin of the Olive and jump in the swimming pool fully clothed! About The Company Toma Tours is based in Andalucia and offers a year round programme of tours throughout Andalucia, Spain and Morocco. Their small group day tours (up to 8 or 16 people) operate regularly from the Marbella area.

They also offer single-

night “sleepover tours” as well as longer the country, I crafted a 10 day adventure and it was the perfect trip. All of us that went still revel in the memories. - How do you feel about the way the business is going? Recently Toma has grown from a one man band to a team of 3. We had our first business lunch recently and it felt great. We now have Lindsay as our Online Community Manager and Ivan has joined us as a second Tour Manager, which means we can extend the programme. The best thing is that we share the same passion and think so much alike.

circuit tours, which can be booked as one of their scheduled holidays, or adapted into a bespoke private itinerary.

Food

and wine feature heavily in all of their day trips and holidays, along with good doses of culture, art and a deep passion for the destination. For more information see the website or join us on Facebook and Twitter

‘aving a laugh... Jesus was a Spaniard...and other things. I have come to the conclusion that Jesus must have been Spanish. I have no conclusive proof but I base my opinion on observations in Spanish bars. I have always wondered how Jesus fed 5000 people with five loaves and two fishes but I think I have the answer. Go into any traditional Spanish bar and watch a Spanish man at the bar with a beer and a tapa. He will usually have a couple of bits of bread and will eat all of it. When he leaves, just look at the floor and you will notice a pile of crumbs, which if swept up, would make much more than two pieces of bread. Presumably Spanish men do not walk around with pockets full of crumbs, so they must have the ability to make two small pieces of bread into a loaf. Therefore, if Jesus was Spanish, he could have made sandwiches for 5000

It is the time of year out here where flies are everywhere, persistent little buggers whose main aim in life seems to be to annoy the hell out of me. GIG GUIDE April

This month I would like to introduce you all to a great entertainer out here called Joanna Wells. Joanna may be a relatively new kid on the block, but she comes from a well established musical background, not only was her grandfather a successful drummer but she has no less than the famous Welsh singer and composer Ivor Novello in her family tree. Although originally born in Yorkshire she was brought up in Cardiff, and started singing almost as soon as she could talk. At the age of 9 she was chosen to join the South Glamorgan Junior Choir with whom she sang at many of the top venues all over Wales, during this time she was an enthusiastic member of her local church choir and continued singing with the choir into her teenage years. After leaving school Joanna went into the financial services sector as her career choice. However after a chance meeting while on holiday in Spain in 2011 Joanna was set to swap finance for singing. She met one half of the professional duo Vocal Harum who recognized her singing talents and asked her sing with him at an upcoming event, buoyed by the overwhelming positive reception she received following this gig Joanna made up her mind and took the plunge and decided to swap grey Welsh skies for sunny Spanish skies and start a professional solo singing career on the Costa Blanca. Since September 2011 Joanna has made a name for herself singing in many different venues in and around the Torrevieja area of the Costa Blanca South region of Spain, her varied repertoire ranges from the timeless hits of the 60s, the unforgettable 80s pop songs, right up to the classic hits of today such as Amy Winehouse and even Robbie Williams! When not behind the mic Joanna has always been a very adventurous young lady, having jumped out of planes for charity and taking the odd flying lesson here and there so if we can manage to keep this girl on the ground for long enough then go and hear her sing you will not be disappointed. So if you’re a bar or an entertainer and want to appear in the gig guide then please contact me by email on mandy@starsinbars.org or call me on 685302529 or just visit my website www.starsinbars.org

Each month sees more dogs in need & funds being stretched even further. Thank you to Chris, Peter & girls from The Mini Market & Scissor Sister Hairdressers, Las Kalendas, Fortuna who along with Karen and Jim of the The Albero Restaurant raised 1156 euros for us. A great evening, we hope to have another event there in October. On 15th September The Castle Bar, Fortuna is holding a Hog

Roast to raise funds for the dogs. Tickets 10 euros .
