My car got hauled away on a grua last month, as did my motorbike and then I lost my wallet. They say that trouble comes in threes don’t they? So, how do they explain my computer packing up (and being magically restored to life in no time in the big, and nifty, hands of Steve at Ibertech computers) the washing machine leaking, the dog (and me) falling ill and Spurs not winning the Champions League - ok...I’ll let that one go but none of those incidents, nor all of them combined, add up to anything near comparing to the biggest disaster of all this month - one that changed my life, if only for a matter of hours. I lost my phone. Nowadays you tell someone that and you will get the level of sympathy as if you had lost a near relative, ‘blimey that’s a blow mate...hope you can get through it...’ and ‘yeah...that happened to me once’ (whistles through teeth and shakes head and walks off) to the slightly extreme ‘God no!? I mean...I just couldn’t, can’t even like think about THAT happening!!’ (Thanks Sophie). And it’s true, for most of us with so-called smartphones and tablets we would be lost without them. Not only do they keep safe all of our friends contact details, business numbers and more. They are also now our main way of communicating with each other. Phone calls? No, that’s old hat now! These devices are designed to use applications. The same applications (or apps) that are also rewriting the English language with verbs like To Whatsup, To Facebook and we now have people walking around telling how, and what, they tweeted earlier. We don’t so much talk anymore on our hand-held devices as message. As a result, a new language is evolving and there is an ever increasing amount of numbers replacing words and letters being left out to save space (and time) Yet, they are still legible (following a two minute crash course with a five year old) and when you look around any public area, these days, you can see just how much of that is going on with folk walking, head down, and hand flat in front of them supporting the life form that is their (our) life, the precious bleeding phone.

And so it came to pass, that I was without mine for a couple of days (Steve looked at me with something akin to pity as I handed it over for repair) and I had silence in my life. Not complete of course, my son sees to that, but for 48 hours in June I was un-contactable away from the house. The temptation to grow a beard and go and live on Tabarca Island was almost overwhelming but that would have meant that I wouldn’t be able to watch the latest movies, hear the best music, read the very latest news or watch a dog saying funny things on YouTube! I fear that I may have brought the whole ‘bad luck thing’ upon myself. The fact that I still bank at SabadellCAM means I’m probably a masochist and deserve all I get....

Fiscal help... NICHTRESIDENTENSTEUERN

INHERITANCE IN SPAIN – PART 1

In the article I published in May this year, as regards the new law for Spanish wills from 2015, I mentioned that a transfer of assets by inheritance is subject to the payment of inheritance tax in Spain. Picking up that thread I give here a summary of a few points that might interest you. What is the inheritance tax bracket in Spain? First of all, the allowances have remained the same for a long time. However, please note that the figures given in this article are valid at the time of issuing this article and may be subject to change at any time. For non residents, after a very small tax-free allowance of just short of 16.000,- Euros for the spouse and children (each) the tax bracket is staggered according to the value of the estate and starts at 7,65%. The difference for residents is that they have a tax-free allowance of 40.000,- Euros. In addition, as a resident the surviving spouse may benefit from a tax deduction of up to 98% if the property is the habitual residence. There is a snag, though, if the property was to be sold within 10 years from the date of death, the inheritance tax will then have to be paid. To be able to take advantage of the above, the following conditions have to be fulfilled: • both the deceased and the heir are tax-paying residents • they have been residing in the property, that is the object of the said inheritance tax, for a minimum of five years • they have been registered as such on the Padrón. Next month I will supply you with more answers to frequently asked questions regarding this issue. For more information or an appointment please contact us on 96 6697824 or office@andreaburns.es. Reason No. 278.487 for living in Spain...

THE BEACHES For those that ask the question: 'So, why do you live in Spain?' (And let me tell you, I get asked a lot!) We've put together a couple of pages of text and images on just one of the reasons why we do. The Costa Blanca is not only well known as the healthiest place to live in Europe, but it is also famous for its wonderful and plentiful beaches and with more than 100km of golden-sand to choose from; it’s easy to understand a little better the reason why we chose to live here. Don’t go thinking that this guide is just aimed at those who are

here on holiday, or reading this online and perhaps planning a trip out her. Believe me when I say that even those of us that live here could, quite possibly, spend the rest of our lives discovering every stretch of warm golden sand and the hidden coves that make up Spain’s wonderful outline. The relatively small part we have here on the Costa Blanca, as we have already said, is widely renowned for having the best beaches in Spain. Another thing to point out is that the beaches along the Costa Blanca are kept scrupulously clean – If you are up early enough (or coming home late enough!) you can see the tractors raking the sands each day before sun up – guaranteeing you a clean beach every day!

‘aving a laugh... The Talking Centipede A single guy decided life would be more fun if he had a pet. So he went to the pet store and told the owner that he wanted to buy an unusual pet. After some discussion, he finally bought a talking centipede, (100-legged bug), which came in a little white box to use for his house. He took the box back home, found a good spot for the box, and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to church with him. So he asked the centipede in the box, “Would you like to go to church with me today? We will have a good time.” But there was no answer from his new pet. This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few minutes and then asked again, “How about going to church with me and receive blessings?” But again, there was no answer from his new friend and pet. So he waited a few minutes more, thinking about the situation. The guy decided to invite the centipede one last time. This time he put his face up against the centipede’s house and shouted, “Hey, in there! Would you like to go to church with me and learn about God?” YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS . This time, a little voice came out of the box, “I heard you the first time! I’m putting my shoes on!”

The only way to truly test a restaurant that caters for an international clientele is to go international. Last month I decided to put this to the test and, armed with a Spanish friend, took El Matador in La Marina Urbanisation by surprise - turning up on a busy Saturday evening. It would be interesting to see if they could stand up to the All Abroad Challenge; of giving good service, food and value - and just as importantly - all of it served up with a smile. Lisa seated us, giving us a choice of the available tables either inside or outside under the awning. (Obviously, we hadn’t booked - that would have kinda ruined the surprise) We opted for outside and were delighted when our drinks arrived within a couple of minutes or ordering; which on a warm summer night was most welcome indeed. Rather than go into boring details about the food, I’d much rather tell you about how much of it there was! Not only what arrived on the plate, but also the selections on the menu. There were choices aplenty, for sure, and with something to suit all tastes. I started with king prawns and chorizo; my guest had chosen the mussels. A long arm and a quick fork ensured that I could sample both purely in the interests of the reader, of course. I recommend that you try the Steak cooked on the stone as a main course - it arrives at the table sizzling, tender and making you even hungrier! A decent bottle of the house wine was the perfect accompaniment to our main meal. Stuffed as I was after those two meals (and that’s not easy to achieve with me being a big lad), I felt I should battle on with dessert and coffee - if only to provide you, the reader, with a properly researched article - and to give a comprehensive challenge for El Matador. They rose admirably to the challenge and by the end of the evening we were ready to be poured out of our seats and into the awaiting car. I’ve written a lot of reviews, and not always in the positive I’m afraid, but El Matador more than met the All Abroad Challenge and I’d like to say a thanks to the two Dave’s, Lisa and manager Kristy for allowing us to turn up unannounced and test them as we did. Not many places will! EL Matador is just on the right as you enter La Marina urbanisation and has loads of easy parking and a very handy taxi rank opposite if you feel the in the mood to have a drink or two. Give them a try, as we did, the food and service were superb and most importantly we left saying that we would definitely be back, and bringing others!

1. Each of the following sets of letters can be made into a real word by adding three letters to the beginning, and the same three letters in the same order to the end. For example, ANGLEM can have ENT added at the start and the end to become ENT + ANGLEM + ENT = ENTANGLEMENT. ERTAINM ISCOVE ROW IOXID ROCOS 2. Last weekend I travelled to my sister’s house in Glasgow, around 250 miles away. I started on Saturday morning at 7am, traffic was heavy in places, and at times I was stationary. I arrived sometime after lunch. On Sunday, it was time to make my way home, over exactly the same route. I left my sister’s at exactly the same time, 7am, however, this time I came straight home without any travel delays, arriving home just before lunch. How likely is it that I was at exactly the same point at exactly the same time on both days? 3. Name three consecutive days without using the words Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
