People are funny aren’t they? I don’t mean you or me, I mean everyone else... we’re normal, right? We’ve all said it or thought it at some time but in reality (and I’m only talking about anything moral and legally correct here) what is normal? And if we we’re all the same, well...it’d be a bit dull now wouldn’t’ it? That’s enough questions for now I think but what raised the thought was a comment from a listener to my breakfast show on Real Radio this month. You see he didn’t like one of the songs I played (Radiohead – Creep, the clean version too!) and therefore wrote off the rest of the show as not to his taste, even though he hadn’t heard it. Another who declared that. “All English language stations are the same...” when I asked him if he’d heard my show he confessed he hadn’t... It’s a matter of pleasing most of the people, most of the time and that’s what

we try to do. It’s the same here at the magazine, and if people were all the same and ‘normal’ then it’d be the easiest job in the world as well as the best job in the world! You’ll see why in this month’s edition because I get, as the boss, to go and do the recipe page The Vestry every month now (take a look – it’s delicious) and also spend days walking the beautiful sierra and mountains we have in this area, and then come home and write about it, in a cafe, with croissants and pretty waitresses...ok I’ll shut up about that for now.

Fiscal help...
PLANNING PERMISSION FOR MINOR ALTERATIONS When having small building jobs done on the house many do not imagine they would need to apply for a planning permission. And the builder in charge of carrying out the alteration will not necessarily point out the requirement of the same. However, you do need a planning permission for minor works, called the obra menor for minor building alterations. Outside jobs –and the existence of sacks of sand, cement and further building materials piled up outside the gate- are quickly spotted by the inspectors from the town hall that will then demand to be shown the respective licence. The application is a simple procedure at the “urbanismo” department of your local town hall. The cost is a small percentage on the total estimate for the works to be undertaken. If you are part of a community be aware that some minor alterations that go against the aesthetics - let us say replacing old white windows with new green ones- might also require the permission from your community. This would not have to be shown in writing when you are applying for the permission. The council would grant the permission always on the proviso that no objections are made by the community or neighbours. For alterations that have already passed the majority vote favourably at a community meeting, a copy of the recorded minutes would always be a good back-up.
And as regards planning permissions for major works, the obra mayor, i.e. alterations that affect the structure, they require a project drafted by an architect to be presented along with the

! g n i h t L A E R prefer the MEET THE GANG By Rupert Horne III
Coming soon is Real Radio’s third anniversary and what better way to celebrate than to bring the fastest growing radio station on the Costa Blanca to new listeners. Gran Alacant has now tuned in following the successful erection it experienced last month (who said Carry On was dead..?) and since then locals have been tuning to the liveliest and most interactive station in Spain; joining in and chatting to presenters via Facebook and Twitter. This means the presenters can play just what you want and receive and acknowledge your request (or just say ‘hello!’) immediately! Try for yourself and see what a fun, and it must be said, half mad bunch these guys are. But first here’s a little about them all... A Girl Called Soo Mondays & Tuesdays 11.00-2.00pm Hi, I´m…Á girl called Soo´ and I’ve been working for REAL RADIO now for about the last 10 months. It was Lorna Michelle that introduced me to it in the first place, god never would have thought about it, to be honest when I first went up to see them it scared the pants off me cause the Sheriff just gave me the mic and told the listeners that I was going to take over whilst he went for a walk……OMG I nearly had kittens hahaha. Well the first week was terrifying but after realising that all I was doing was talking to REAL people out there and that I was in fact just that, a REAL person, no one special, just me, who makes mistakes, messes up and forgets things just like everyone (after all I am blonde & Essex ha-ha) and after getting text & Facebook good luck messages and requests I seemed to settle in and really enjoy and go with the flow of it. Now I love my show, playing all my fav´s from the 60´s up to date and I play lve songs or Motown which everyone can chillax too. Of course it wouldn’t be the same without my dog George that accompanies me to the Stu-
8
dio, so tune in and listen to me, keep it REAL…….you know it makes sense x Sheriff Tues-Fri 2.00-5.00pm & Sat 10.00-1.00pm I love the pressure of life in the fast lane I made a very important decision in 2011 and joined the Coastrider Newspaper as the Marketing Director, and it has proved to be the correct decision as well as Marketing the newspaper I have many other daily tasks that keep me occupied and always important a great working relationship with the entire Coastrider Team Real Radio International why?? I have said it before a gap was available the music and type of shows available were and to a certain extent still are not directed to a general audience, most stations have a small audience per presenter. I wanted to provide a platform for people who had a passion for music and fancied a go at being a radio presenter it has taken me three years to get that mix together, I feel this has now been achieved we have a great team no Divas just good fun loving people with personalities. And with an audience of 14,000 plus via FM and our websites daily I guess we doing ok. Our advertising costs are the lowest on the Costa Blanca with the largest audience including German, Scandinavian we even have listeners in China, USA, Canada and as you know Australia What do you like the most about Real Radio International? Knowing a lot of the regular listeners not only by name but actually having met many Dave Bull Weekdays 8.00-11.00am Dave has been living and working in Spain since 2000 and has integrated into the Spanish life; learning the language and the culture. Now a full-time writer he lives with his son, Mitch and two dogs on the Costa Blanca penning his experiences and ob-
servations on living life as an expat in Spain and on his travels through Europe. Always from his own ‘different’ perspective, he publishes one of the most successful magazines on the Costa Blanca and has been the Editor of two regional expat newspapers. His first book It just is… was published in 2011 and recounts his life in Spain as a typical expat and he has now taken those experiences to the air waves with Real Radio, Dave Said: “I was offered the chance to do the Breakfast Show and being a morning person I jumped at the opportunity, and I love it! The interaction with listeners is great fun – they can be so cruel to me! – and getting the chance to start peoples’ days with some great music and a bit of banter is my kinda job!” Carole Jarvis As a true Scouser I love to talk, so when this opportunity came along with Real Radio International I grabbed it with both hands, bit like when I see a set of wheels I quite fancy, anyway there I was before I knew it sat in the studio with a funny looking Scotsman next to me saying “go on, all you need to do is talk!” well like a red rag to a bull I went for it and now the poor Scotsman cant shut me up!!!!!! When I was a kid, yes I have grown up now although still a kid at heart, we used to have the radio on every morning, Radio City and Radio Merseyside, they had brilliant presenters, as my mum used to say “salt of the earth” they made ya feel at home, real people talking to real people...little did I know then that I would get the chance to talk to real people on Real Radio International. From Liverpool to the Costa Blanca, I am the chica with a voice bigger than an oil tanker, well at least am honest!!!! Talking of which, what better way to have a Scouser in your home without having to chain everything down…….with Real Radio International you can do just that.

Captain Rai Woods Sun 4.006.00pm & Mon 2.00-5.00pm My main love in life is music, mostly country, twang and oldies, closely followed by my love of the sea and boats and also the sky and flying…. But I have had to work to pay my bills. I worked for many years with UTV/ITN covering the troubles in Northern Ireland and various other stories. All this a far cry from my first chosen career of medicine….. My main hobby is electronics a bit of plumbing on the side and I do like cooking – I am also young free and single (Ok I made that bit up) not young or free very expensive BUT still SINGLE hey hey…… Tony Capaldi I was born, the seventh generation, in Scotland of an Italian couple Dominic and Velia, living in Ayrshire at the time but spent most of my formative years in Tuscany, a beautiful part of Italy near Florence. I started to sing when I was sixteen years old winning over thirty competitions. I made a record which was used by Radio Monte Carlo as their signature tune. When I was eighteen years old I returned to Scotland where I entertained in a fashionable
restaurant in Glasgow called Ariosto. In 1972 I married Maria and together with the family developed the Avonbridge Hotel in Hamilton where I sang and entertained for about sixteen years increasing the popularity of the hotel. At this time I also worked for Scottish T.V. and took part in pantomime in a Glasgow theatre where I appeared with the well known comedian Jimmy Logan whose sister was married to my brother, Nick. During this time my son Gianni moved to Hollywood where he became an actor and producer for Universal Studios. Since moving to Torrevieja I have entertained in many venues and now am pleased to be part of the team of Real Radio International. Have you heard of Geoengineering? Have you looked up at the sky lately? Many cloud formations are formed out of the white lines you see in the sky, they are not innocent contrails left by aeroplanes; they are chemtrails “chemical trails”. Aircraft are flying over the world today, dumping toxins to gain control of the weather. Take a look for yourselves; look up Geoengineering on the internet. This spraying of toxic chemicals is causing low immunities and ill health among us. In defence, the government are claiming that they are controlling global warming. Unfortunately we live in a world where most of the population are blinded by the media, and hypnotized by the TV; it’s called dumbing down humanity! You might say what rubbish; the government are spraying toxins to gain control of the weather? Do they not breathe the same air too? They are spraying heavy metals and toxins; they too are taking a detox that will eliminate these harmful toxins. They do not eat the same food as you; most foods and cleaning products bought in supermarkets today worldwide are loaded with toxins, pesticides, aspartame and more evils. If you buy organic fruit and vegetables, they too have fewer nutrients because the soils in most parts of the world are depleted of nutrients too. The world is changing and it is vital that we change too; to take care of our health today, it is most important to do a little research and see how you can obtain maximum health for yourselves and your families.

When I asked a couple of customers just what they thought of a wonderful little (not really) shop, tucked away behind the Citroen garage in Benijofar that sells such a variety of what can only be described as interesting and good quality used furniture and curiosities, they offered a range of adjectives ranging from fascinating to mysterious and pretty much everything else in between. You see Cathy´s Curiosity Shop in Benijofar really is just that. Take a wander around and you´ll be met by the imposing figure of Cathy who will welcome you as warmly as she does everyone and everyone who shops here is now her friend – just pay the shop and visit and I will bet you now that you come back as with a new friend in Cathy. Inside this Tardis of a place lay all sorts of treasures, art deco. Classical, traditional. Italian made, retro or just the down-right daft and funny! Cathy´s shop is just as much a place for selling as it is for meeting and Cathy encourages all her clients to come back and see her, or others who are under the same orders, and enjoy a coffee and a natter amongst some fine furnishings and trinkets.
1
B
Prices are kept realistic as Cathy says she likes the shop to be an ever-changing oasis in the heart of the Spanish village of Benijofar, and it is just that. Whether I call in daily or weekly the stock at the Curiosity Shop is always changing and there´s always plenty of new and interesting pieces to mull over while you enjoy a coffee. Oriental and Asian throws adorn a few of the walls while a duck (a noisy one…) guards the entrance and further into this Aladdin´s Cave an antique wooden rocking horse gently trots back and forth – odd seeing as I was the only one there at the time… Fancy a haggle, barter and a natter? Cathy usually does so if you have something to sell or are looking for something that will enhance your home, and make it that little bit different, pop in and you´ll find something that´ll make you say, ´now what is that..? If you haven´t been to this place yet, don´t miss out on what really is the best shop I’ve seen in years!

The nature on the Sierra (or the Campo as it is sometimes mistakenly called) is abundant if you have the patience to wait. It’s also worth watching your step too, but not for the reasons you may be thinking – there is no dogs mess on the Sierra, possibly because the dogs’ leads don’t unreel

Their motto of being the ‘Home of Quality Food, Service and Ambiance’ was put to the test, when after just 12 months after opening they won the Coastrider Culinary Award for the Best New Restaurant on the Costa Blanca, followed a year later with the 2013 Best Fine Dining award. The reputation of The Vestry has been growing rapidly and they now have a loyal following of customers who are constantly spreading the word about this little gem. Gordon, who is also the head chef, is keen to share his passion and knowledge of food with others on the Costa Blanca and will be sharing recipes and cookery tips here with you every month. Dave recently spent an afternoon in the kitchen with Gordon and is also planning to have him do a cookery spot on his radio show soon.

4. If necessary add a little more oil as the mushrooms will soak it up. Be sure to keep them moving or they may stick and burn in the pan. Timing is important at this stage as we don’t want to overcook them. 5. Now we add the garlic, fairly late as we don’t want it to overcook and the whisky which we will heat until ‘reduced’. 6. Now our sauce is getting there nicely and we add some double cream at this point followed by 3 ladles of homemade gravy, 7. Check that the chicken breast has properly cooked by pressing with your finger – if it is firm the breast is nicely cooked (if it presses in - it is not ready). 8. Add some fresh basil (always better torn rather than cut and dried) onions to the sauce. Put some grated cheese on top of the chicken. Place it back in the oven for 4 mins then pour the sauce over the chicken to serve. 9. Enjoy!
