CHELSEA STUTTERING WITH THE MANCHESTER DUO NOT FAR BEHIND

THIS IS WHY WE LOVE THE PREMIERSHIP!

The biggest talking point was the match between Chelsea and rivals Manchester United. While decisions through the game that affected the final outcome may have been contentious and possibly unfair, what we can tell is that these are probably the two best teams in England right now. For the first sixty minutes we were watching a terrific game of immense quality. Chelsea’s midfield trio were playing spectacularly against Manchester United’s brilliant attacking force. For those who did not witness this incredible match, Chelsea fought back to 2-2 after going behind only for the referee to send off Ivanovic and Torres to send them to nine men against United’s eleven. When Manchester United was awarded a goal that appeared to be scored from an offside position, the game was over, meaning

email: MAYOBUILD@hotmail.com

that they closed the gap to one point.

Tel. 665 063 228

I should also mention the equally enthralling Merseyside Derby between Everton and Liverpool that ended 2-2. I was honoured to watch such a superb game and even though Liverpool will be angry not to have been awarded a late winner, it was still a superb game that oozed class. It was a brilliant watch. The third (realistic) title challenger is Man City. They have been interesting, and have had to rely on Edin Dzeko as a super-sub on numerous occasions. How often have we seen the Citizens coming back from 1-0 down to win 1-2 this season? While their late goals have gotten them level with United and one point behind Chelsea, they certainly seem the weakest of the three challengers so far. Of course, we have to remember that we are talking about the current champions. Teams don’t become bad over night and even if they aren’t playing at their best, they are registering points on the table. Looking at how the seasons gone, I’m fairly confident of seeing Reading relegated. The other two are more difficult to decide. I would say QPR but they do have very talented players. Southampton has played well and has some quality players. I see the bottom three being Reading, Norwich and Southampton. Norwich may have registered a stunning win at Arsenal but I think it was just a fluke. They have looked woeful in their previous games and I don’t think that their players are as good as some of the other poorer clubs. The middle of the table is quite predictable, although I do expect to see Liverpool and Newcastle to rise up the table at the expense of West Ham and West Brom, who have both performed above expectations so far. Expect Stoke, Sunderland, Swansea, Fulham and West Ham to have comfortable, mid-table seasons. They are solid clubs that should and probably will stay up. I still believe it’s too early to pick one title winner, but picking the four champions league spot teams is an easier challenge. Any of my regular readers will know that my predictions have not been perfect so far, but I’m going to go ahead and predict Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea and (cue drum roll) Arsenal. Yes, I’m picking the Gunners to pull it off again. How many times have we seen Arsenal looking shabby at the start and everybody writing them off? Last season they had been thrashed 8-1 by Man Utd at this stage! Who would have thought that they would finish 3rd after all of that! Arsenal are a brilliant side led by one of the best managers in the EPL, they’ll be fine. Catch you later in December!

Later, having studied law together at Alicante university, Pedro and Ignacio teamed up and formed the highly successful Pellicer & Heredia Solicitors (based in the same building as the British Consulate) and using their understanding of British people have built a firm of three offices (so far) with a fourth opening in Ciudad Quesada very soon –and all the staff speak English, very handy.

10 things you will need

WHEN MOVING TO SPAIN 1 A new body clock.

If you really plan to join in with the Spanish then you’ll have to start considering that the time you are hearing ‘last orders’ in the UK is roughly the time of night that you’ll be just starting your Spanish evening. Things happen later here so when someone asks you to come along and see a live band perform, don’t plan on eating your dinner by 6.30 and getting out of the door by eight o’clock. No here in Spain things tend to be just warming up around midnight and into full swing by the early hours. So grab a siesta and then a fiesta!

2

A barometer. Probably, you’d have thought that you won’t be needing any of that stuff cluttering up the hallway of your new home in Spain just because it’s always sunny here. Bring it over and see how long it lasts because after about a month of looking at it and the little arrow always pointing to ‘sunny’ you’re going to think it’s broken anyway! What you will learn to appreciate in Spain is that when the Spanish talk about the weather it is a very short conversation indeed. It goes something like this, Brit: ‘hi, looks like rain towards the end of the week.’ Spaniard: ‘Sunny today, adios.’ All that matters in Spain is what the weather is like now, a short comment such as, ‘what a lovely day’, and that’ll do – so you’ll save on words too!

3

The kettle. Ok, this one may be a little controversial to Brits but you really are going to be spending a whole lot more time outdoors when you move to a new home in Spain. That’s the life, outside on the terrace, with friends or perhaps at a café bar supping the superb coffee on offer here – far more sociable don’t you think. Plus it’s cheap (around 1€ a cup) and…the added benefit of less tannin in your diet means you’re allowed to drink more wine! Ok I made that last bit up but there’s bound to be a report somewhere that back that claim, so just enjoy! But for that morning cuppa, again on the terrace, watching the sun come up to warm the day (yet again) a kettle is a must have.

4

The language. Ok, you don’t need to be hitting the ground running (although the way the budget flights are cutting back we may well be doing that soon as the plane lands…) but it is worth taking the time out to learn a few key phrases that’ll help you get along such as, ‘I’m looking for…’ and ‘where is the nearest hospital’ and of course ‘another round please’. But in all seriousness, you can survive with very little Spanish here but why not learn a little more and see how a whole new culture opens up for you?

5

A good barbecue. Agreed this probably isn’t on most peoples’ ‘Ten things you need while in Spain’ lists, but I’m the writer of this piece so I get to choose and a barbecue, in my humble opinion, is as important in Spain as having an oven. During the summer months many people tend to cook outside every evening and having a good barbecue on which to pile the meats (a local fish don’t forget) means you can have the neighbours and friends around whenever you want, not just on those special occasions that need planning.

6

The beach bag. We all have them. Any expat (or any nationality come to that) has one; ready prepared and available at a moment’s notice. Similar in importance (to expats) as the briefcase that Obama carries the nuclear codes in, the beach bag is at hand and can be grabbed and thrown into the boot of the car (along with the kids…although they go in the seating area normally) and the family can hit the beach without a moments preparation. Inside, sun creams, trunks, towels, water, toys, books and crisps (well that’s our beach bag anyway) mean that we are fully prepared every time the moment arrives to hit the beach.

7

A relaxed disposition. If the plumber turning up an hour late is annoying then you’re going to have to get used to some serious relaxing! It happens all the time here and as you watch another expat screaming and shouting down the phone as his face turns red, you’ll be the one not worrying whether the plumber turns up to fix that leaking shower today,

A fun guide for those thinking of coming here to enjoy THE LIFE!

tomorrow or even the day after. The fact that he’s coming at some point will be suffice.

8

A healthy appetite. They like to eat in Spain and ten courses for a meal can be common. A meal, every meal is an occasion in Spain and therefore needs time to be spent enjoying it (and time to consume the food mountains that will be brought to your table is essential too!). and by a ‘healthy’ appetite I mean just that as the Spanish diet is one of the healthiest in the world and at the same time one of the most delicious ion my opinion. Fresh-caught fish griddled in a little olive oil and salt is superb at any time of the day (or night). Eat well and eat healthy – in Spain you get to do both!

9

A folder. Sounds a bit dull I know but Spain is a country that likes its administration work – and they like to create a lot of it. but I included this because one of the best bits of advice I received when I came to Spain was to keep every bit of paperwork, and keep it where I could easily find it because you will need it, at some point some obscure piece of paper with an official stamp on it will be asked for and if you’ve got it all in one place it makes your expat experience very simple indeed.

10

A good pair of legs. Now you don’t have to have the pins of a supermodel nor those of Senor Beckham (for the fellas I mean) but if you really are to enjoy Spain – you need to get out and about, and that means a stroll along the prom, a morning/evening walk along a deserted beach or perhaps an amble into your local Spanish village to sample the food and wine. For most of the year an evening walk is possible every day and Spain offers plenty of options in ‘getting some fresh air’. What better way to enjoy the seaside, countryside or mountain sides or your local area – you get to meet more people, enjoy the last rays of the day and, of course, reward yourself with a glass or two of wine safe in the knowledge that you’re not driving.

‘aving a laugh... I became confused when I heard the word ‘service´....used with these agencies: Banking ‘Service’

Postal ‘Service’ Telephone ‘Service’ Pay TV ‘Service’ State & Public ‘Service’ Customer

‘Service’

Bureaucratic ‘Service’ This is not what I thought ‘Service’ meant. Then I visited my uncle, he’s a farmer, and he hired a bull to’ Service’ his cows. Suddenly WOW!!!

It all came clear.

Now I understand what all those agencies are doing to us!

RETIREMENT BONUS... The Navy found they had too many officers and decided to offer an early retirement bonus. They promised any officer who volunteered for Retirement a bonus of €1,000 for every inch measured in a straight line between any two points in his body... The officer got to choose what those two points would be. The first officer who accepted asked that he be measured from the top of his head to the tip of his toes. He was measured at six feet and walked out with a bonus of €72,000. The second officer who accepted was a little smarter and asked to be measured from the tip of his outstretched hands to his toes. He walked out with €96,000. The third one was a non-commissioned officer, a grizzly old Chief who, when asked where he would like to be measured replied, ‘From the tip of my weenie to my testicles.’ It was suggested by the pension man that he might want to reconsider, explaining about the nice big checks the previous two Officers had received. But the old Chief insisted and they decided to go along with him providing the measurement was taken by a Medical Officer. The Medical Officer arrived and instructed the Chief to ‘drop ‘em,’ which he did. The medical officer placed the tape measure on the tip of the Chief’s weenie and began to work back. “Dear Lord!” he suddenly exclaimed, ‘’Where are your testicles?’’ The old Chief calmly replied, ‘’ Vietnam ‘’.

Riddles - Answers below

1. Three Palefaces were taken captive by a hostile Indian tribe. According to tribe’s custom they had to pass an intelligence test, or die. The chieftain showed 5 headbands 2 red and 3 white. The 3 men were blindfolded and positioned one after another, face to back. The chief put a headband on each of their heads, hid two remaining headbands, and removed their blindfolds. So the third man could see the headbands on the two men in front of him, the second man could see the headband on the first, and the first could not see any headbands at all. According to the rules any one of the three men could speak first and try to guess his headband color. And if he guessed correctly - they passed the test and could go free, if not they failed. It so happened that all 3 Palefaces were prominent logicians from a nearby academy. So after a few moments of silence, the first man in the line said: “My headband is ...”. What color was his head band? Why?

Answer 1. The first one (he did not see any head bands) thought this way: The last one is silent, which means, he does not know, ergo at least one of head bands he sees is white. The one in the middle is silent too even though he knows what I already mentioned. If I had a red head band, the second one would have known that he had a white head band. However, nobody says anything, so my head band is not red - my head band is white. SOLUTIONS:

Linda Rowland Talks Insurance Don’t get caught out Recent adjustments to the social security laws in Spain mean that you will be charged for medical services if you don’t have your SIP card in order and up to date. We know of a client who visited his GP and was charged 60 Euros for the consultation at the national health clinic. The charges affect residents and none residents alike and they are not so much changes as tightening up of the existing rules.

*

If you are a European citizen of Spanish retirement age you will be entitled to the reciprocal agreement between member countries but now it is important to register and make sure that you have a Spanish SIP card which contains the information in its magnetic strip to what exactly you are entitled.

TO:

GRAN ALACANT - SANTA POLA email: jsbaile@yahoo.es

tel. 629 65 90 74

If you officially work in Spain and contribute to the system by being employed or self employed, the same regulations apply. The biggest blow is for people who have no right to the European reciprocal agreements. American, Canadian, Russian, Chinese citizens and many more are excluded. So are all the Europeans who have not reached official state pensionable age and do not work in Spain. Like many sectors, the state health department has huge political and financial pressure to keep the below strict budget limits and eliminate the former practise of attending to any medical request whether the patient is entitle to free medical treatment or not. We all become complacent when we live in Spain due to the easy going nature of our hosts but this now can become costly. The solution, if you do not think you are entitled to state medical cover is to take out private medical insurance. You may find having abandoned your home country that you are no longer entitled to cover there either and if you leave it until you need help you may find that your new condition may become excluded by private insurance. Contact us for more information of the private medical policies available.

GIG GUIDE November

Whilst living here in Spain I’ve had

getting more and more bookings and

the pleasure of going to see a very talented young artist known as Debbie Slater, she was born in Nottingham and moved to Spain at the young age of ten with her family, she had no problem changing to the Spanish way of life and started school over here picking up the language very easily. Debbie was born to sing and loved it from an early age even at five years old she could sing all the songs from the musical ‘A Sound of Music’ taught to her by her Nan, not long after moving here Debbie’s parents realised how serious she was about singing and that she wanted to make a career out of it and they could see that she had a raw natural talent, so she started singing lessons with the very talented Patti Ross. At the tender age of just fifteen Debbie did her first solo public gig in Dolores and within a year she was

winning countless singing competitions she then consequently turned professional. Since then she has performed at endless charity events from Gran Alicant down to La Manga including the Municipal Theatre in Torrevieja along the way, and her repertoire of music is vast for someone of such a young age, people can not believe the amount of songs this young lady can sing from the 60’s up to the modern charts and even the great musicals are in there, but there is another bow to Debbie’s singing talents which is expanding all the time and that is songs from the opera’s which is her dearest passion. Debbie does cover all areas of the Costa Blanca so please go to see her show she is a great entertainer as well as having a fantastic voice she even filmed her first DVD last month with Viva TV. If you’re a bar or an entertainer and want to appear in the gig guide or you have any events coming up that you would like me to tell everyone about then please contact me by email on mandy@starsinbars.org or call me on 685302529 or just visit my website www.starsinbars.org
