Food is our passion, service is our pleasure.

Two Different Styles, Same Great Quality & Service Well what a fantastic couple of days we had at The Homes and Gardens Exhibition held at The Finca Golf Hotel. It was great to see so many of our regular customers from both Frissan and The Vestry. It was also good to talk to many potential customers. Our stand proved to be very popular especially as we offered to opportunity to try samples of our cappuccino choc pot, pate and our excellent house wine. We entered the Costas Cook Off, were we prepared a starter of smoked salmon filled with cream cheese and dill, a main course of pan fried sea bass with garlic ginger spring onion and soy sauce, and a coconut cheesecake for desert. We were piped at the post by the Spice Hut who prepared some lovely spicy dishes. Spicy food has over the past few years has become an integral style of food both in the UK and internationaly.Lets not however forget the Spanish influence, chorizo is now very popular in UK cuisine. We also took part in a cooking demonstration. We cooked Penne Pollo Spinachi and explained a number of our culinary tips for preparing good wholesome food without the stress. A number of people also let us have some of their tips and recipes. We shall of course pass these ideas on.

very rewarding and of course tasty!

In the last edition I promised to tell you what you could prepare with egg whites. I am going to explain the preparation of meringue. Meringue is quite easy and quick to prepare but there are a couple of the areas of the process that should be followed quite strictly for success. You will need: 6 egg whites 12oz castor sugar A pinch of salt 2oz of granulated sugar 2 desert spoons of cornflour 2 desert spoons of lemon juice 1. First you will need a free standing mixer, a hand mixer may not have the required power. Put a couple of drops of lemon juice into the bowl and wipe around with a tissue. The mix is quite sensitive to any tiny impurities. Into the bowl put the egg whites and a pinch of salt and whisk at high speed. 2. When the mix has started to foam and create soft peaks start to add the castor sugar, you must add the sugar a couple of spoons at a time and allow a few minutes for it to be fully incorporated. 3. When all of the castor sugar has been mixed in stop the mixer and stir in the granulated sugar cornflour and lemon juice. Pour the mix into each of the ramekins. 4. Cover a baking tray with greaseproof paper. If you have a piping bag you can use this to pipe any size or shape. We normally pipe a nest about 2 ins across. 5. If you do not have a piping bag use 2 spoons to create whatever size and shape you want. Pop the tray into a preheated oven at 130deg. They should take about 45 minutes, but check them periodically, if they are starting to colour turn the oven down. 6. When they are done they should feel firm to the touch and if you tap the base it should sound hollow. When they are at this stage turn the oven off and leave them in the oven until they are cold.

The quantities in this recipe will make quite a few meringues depending on the size that you make them but they will last a long time in a plastic container, or reduce the mix quantities in ratio. The meringues can be served in a variety of ways. We top with fruits of the forest and whipped cream. We hope you enjoy

K brands! Well known U

Hi! My name is Ally. I am a shopaholic, chocaholic. Magazineaholic Spanglish mother. And best of all A LOCAL.

I have a little blog (www.allylikes.com) and collaborate with a few online magazines. Now I’ve decided to bring all “that” (whatever it is) to the people in Gran Alacant (and around). I am here to solve all your fashion issues no matter your age or size. I will bring you all the trends, places to shop, advice …EVERYTHING ABOUT FASHION (and maybe some beauty too). So please, feel free to send me all your fashion doubts to ally.crespo@gmail. com.

I am totally in love with one of the new trends, THE CAPE. Have you seen it? It’s everywhere! Every week there’s a new celebrity wearing the Burberry Cape, and all of the Br-IT girls have it. You can also see it on the street and all the shops. What if I say you can get a cape, similar to Burberry’s, but a lot cheaper (32.99€), here in Gran Alacant?? We keep thinking we need to go to town to get great things, but sometimes we don’t realize we have them right here! I actually love going shopping into town, but when I’m in a rush, as a working mum don’t I have the time to go shopping, I normally go local. Recently I have been a local shoe shop that I loved close its doors. And I think it is really sad. Let’s help our neighbors with their shops! As I Said on last month’s mag, Navajo Style is also on trend, So I found a perfect cape to combine both trends (24.99€). I think capes are really good for the weather we have here in Alicante, as you can put them on and take them of very easy. You can find both capes in See Litha (Sueño Azul) This month I had a few Birthday parties from friends, and went to search for presents. I found a great collection of envelope reversible bags that I totally LOVE. Made with really good quality leather (24.99€ – 26.99€). By a brand named Lindas Cositas (cute little things) that you can also find in See Litha. I hope this was helpful for you, and I’ll be back next month with more FASHION!

LETTERS FROM THE FORUMS... Chucking the toys out of the pram...!

“All Abroad” One man’s heaven is another man’s hell, La Marina. (Article in All Abroad - Oct 2014) There’s a free magazine out every month, wittingly called “All Abroad” a clever play on words there. I said a free magazine, because, let’s face it, you’d be disappointed if you’d parted with some money for it. You’ve probably read it on occasions, it’s full of “advice” on what happens to your money when you die etc, the best places to eat, recipes wacky articles, adverts, Estate Agents (i’ll come back to them later) and 50 jokes to make you smile ! I think they mean 50 jokes to make you smile, if you’ve been locked in a cell for 20 yrs with Ian Brady, Charles Manson and Russell Brand ! You might just be getting the feeling I wouldn’t be bothered if I never read this magazine again. Any way, i’ll get to my point, on page 5 of this months fun edition, is an article by Alan Gandy all about La Marina. I’m not going to print the whole thing out, but i’ve got the feeling he doesn’t like the area. I’ve lived here for coming up to 11 yrs, it’s not perfect by any means, we could do with a few palm trees strategically planted, some potholes in the roads repairing etc, but on the whole, I love it here. He points out that to get here, you have to drive past a prostitute, yep, and billboards advertising Estate Agents, that’s rich coming from a bloke who’s magazine is full of Agents adverts ( i said i’d get back to it) and then just goes on and on, saying, “Imagine if someone took a fairly large chunk of some soulless and characterless (I know loads of characters here) British town, and dropped it in the sunshine, you’re somewhere near the mark” He goes on to say we’re a large swathe of land covered in little boxes, supermarkets, retail units and schools ? I may be wrong but I thought the school was in San Fulgencio. He does say he likes our beach but he’s not a fan of great big housing estates, well pal, people need to live somewhere before going out to pick up your mag. I’ll finish by saying he likes Santa Pola where there is a ‘McDonalds’ (always a plus) his words ! So a man who prefers McDonalds to fine Spanish Tapas bars etc is definateley a person who knows what he’s talking about ! by BigEd in La Marina Dear Big Ed Had a quick browse through the internet copy of All Abroad. I don’t think my thoughts on this freebie are much different from most other peoples who live in La Marina Urbs. Firstly I must state that the Alan who wrote that piece, was not the Alan who is writing this piece. Also the reporter (or whatever position he has ) should really do just a bit of work on his Geography of the area. He seems to of been in La Marina Urbs, But talks of La Marina, Two entirely different places, La Marina is a Peublo under the umbrella of Elche. La Marina Urbs is one of the largest Urbs in Europe and is part of San Fulgencio. The Female Lady of the night actually sits in Elche, not San Fulgencio. The Urbanisation does not have any schools that I am aware of,

The La Marina Beach belongs to la Marina in Elche. But we all know a freebie is a freebie, due to what advertising it can get , obviously it doesn’t get much from around here. We could do a competition and ask people to read the article (wont subject you to read the whole mag) and put comments on the errors this guy made about the area. You could also if you liked send them in an e-mail to Dave Bull (the supposed Editor Or Real Radio Dave bull is the supposed owner I am sure he will be impressed Alan Thanks Alan, I don’t know where this guy lives, but I think the Mag is based in Gran Alacante, and if this Alan lives there, I don’t see how he can call La Marina...(it ended there - bedtime..?) Dave Bull (editor of All Abroad) replies: Dear Big Ed (clever play on words there...) We consider ourselves open-minded at the magazine and believe that readers and writers are entitled to their opinion about a region (or whatever within reason) and we are always up for a little debate. However, to knock the whole magazine and the people who do some hard work putting it together, and the advertisers because you don’t like one article is hardly fair is it? I will defend your right to have an opinion until you’ve finished with your colouring book (you started it ;) ). Why not write to us with a positive article about your area rather than the playground stuff of ‘our place is better than yours...’ I await with baited breath and as soon as you’ve sharpened your crayons and are ready to go just drop me a line...I know you’ll be reading this! We quoted you as it was written as you can see...so you may also want to check your grammar before replying...and that’s not the one that lives with Grandpa... Dave Bull (the supposed editor...apparently!) Author of the article Alan Gandy replies: Well, I’d have to say the author of this little gem seems more than a bit confused. More so than the confusion I displayed as to the exact geography – sorry I got the names wrong! I can’t have been that confused though as most readers knew exactly what and where I was talking about. Let’s clear up some things; • It is made very clear this is my O-P-I-N-IO-N • I am not Dave Bull, I have nothing to do with the magazine or its estate agent advertisers, nor do I have any connections with property sales. Had they read the article properly they might have figured this out. • Feeling the need to be a little pedantic, I did not say there were any schools (I couldn’t give a toss if there are or aren’t) in ‘La Marina’ or whatever you choose to call it. I was talking about a particular town planning model.

• Quote: “Imagine if someone took a fairly large chunk of some soulless and characterless (Author insert: ‘I know loads of characters here’) British town, and dropped it in the sunshine, you’re somewhere near the mark”. This clearly does not say the towns I refer to are devoid of characters´. A place can be characterless. As, in my opinion this place is. • I don’t understand what the hell my being partial to McDonalds has to do with anything. I quote again “So a man who prefers McDonalds to fine Spanish Tapas bars etc is definateley a person who knows what he’s talking about!” I’m sure the author enjoys his fish & chip supper on a Friday evening whilst he brushes up on his spelling. What is it that makes expats think eating tapas and savoury rice with bits of meat and/or fish in equates to being integrated? In my defence though, I have on rare occasions seen Spanish people frequenting McDonalds. • I have never been to Gran Alacant (it probably wouldn’t be to my taste either). I definitely don’t live there. I live in Almeria (70km from the nearest McDonalds). • Prostitution: I was being kind with my piece and didn’t mention the observation that the roundabout frequented by these young ladies (if my geography is correct) is the main route between the beach and ‘little Britain’. I wonder why that is? Does it say something about their client base? • I DON’T LIKE GREAT BIG HOUSING ESTATES. It’s all a question of taste. I don’t like the place, but as the article says I appreciate that some people do. Good luck to them! It wouldn’t do for us all to be the same would it? Otherwise we’d have a La Marina type city, approximately the size of Birmingham, made up of a million plus Brits! Perish the thought! My worst nightmare! Why are expats so bloody defensive about their little piece of the ‘promised land’? A comment I got on our own site summed it up for me. It effectively accused me of being ‘disrespectful’ for voicing my opinion about the area – which the writer loves so much, and then went on to suggest that if I wanted to see a real s*** hole I should visit Benidorm. Irony alert! I’ll continue to do, think and say what I like. Each to their own I say! MANDY’S

Spanish Diary by Mandy Tams The Lesser Spotted Spanish Parker Where we are stopping is opposite El Clot, a reservation for birds and water birds. People come with cameras so large one is not sure what they are trying to say with them, some lens being up to a couple of feet long… To see them trudging the green land laden down with tripods and an assortment of spare lens hung around their necks is a treat BUT… Watching the Spaniards when it comes to parking their cars is a delight to the senses, so much so it sets our juices flowing like a fine banquet spread before us… It pulls in crowds of ‘car twitchers’ when passers by realise that a parking is going to take place and right in front of them especially if it is that rare breed of stationary, none scratched or bumped posh car that is attracting the attention. Cameras come out, phones are held high ready to video in quiet disbelief and envy as they watch the everyday, but nonetheless spectacular skill of the Spanish driver. First the driver spots a parking space that we as English drivers would scorn at knowing that any respectfully sized car will turn up its bumper at such a small gap. They would pass it in a Ford KA leaving it only to the experts we see doing handbrake parking at speed. But these intrepid Spanish drivers leave no gap empty; on spotting one, let the spectacle begin. He/she; the strange thing is both sexes posses this skill, rev up the engine; they ignore other road uses and their mirrors; these are unnecessary in their plan to plant a 12 foot car in a 10 foot gap. First they choose whether to reverse or forward park, no matter which the skill is unbelievable. The front is nudged in edging to the bumper of the parked car, inching its way in just to kiss bumper to bumper and then the real manoeuvrings begin. Accelerator down, the driver nudges the parked vehicle as far as it will go until it either hits the car behind or there is enough space, if still not enough, the car is slammed into gear, full lock on the steering wheel, clutch depressed, first gear selected clutch released, the parking driver then pushes the parked car in front out of the way, wheels spinning and the smell of burning rubber delight the nasal passages of the crowd… they know the finale is close. To get the car to fit just so, they begin a little shunt backwards and forwards into the bumpers of the two vehicles, one in front, one behind, if they are in a hurry this is done at speed until they have opened up a large enough gap to park their vehicle much to the

applause of the Brits standing watching. But their skill does not end their, if the gap is too small this can be even more thrilling. When cars cannot be shunted out of the way this does not present a problem as they park nose in at 90 degrees leaving the arse end stuck out in the middle of the road or better still if there is a pedestrian crossing close by, that can entice two or three to double or triple park… Finally if all else fails the lesser spotted Spanish driver will park on the pavement, nose in once again leaving its exhaust end stuck out as though presenting ready for mating. All admire as they try to pass in the half of the narrow road remaining. Wonderful to observe…

Toilet rules If no facilities are provided at the pool and your little one needs to go… first inspect the pool and see if it looks clean and is full of people swimming then remove their garments carefully so as not to get a drop of pee or heaven forbid, number two on them, and then drop the infant into the pool to relieve themselves in the nice clean water ensuring everybody everything is fine as it’s only baby pee after all says a delighted parent. Some obviously not aware their offspring also need number two, but smile delightedly as one appears in the pool leaving the delightfully unabashed parent happy to fish it out with their fingers whilst saying ‘oh atlest they are not constipated anymore’ and once again ‘after all it is only baby poo.’ The onlookers are obliged to smile and nod while discreetly dragging their own children out of the pool by their hair and reporting the incident to the nearest attended to close the pool for deep cleansing. As for older children, it can be harder to keep them amused, I suggest one special toy or item for them when they declare they will die of boredom… it is not a good idea to tell them to do so, but do it quietly, as they tend to take offence. Do what I did with my boy. Not truly bored, but with his favourite toy hidden away for such an occasion I let him get out his roller skates, not forgetting knee pads, elbow pads, wrist protectors and helmet. Over the top some may suggest, kids bounce… but my boy is 57 and does not bounce, like a child and now he is happily learning to skate all over again on the roof… well I have to keep him quiet somehow as I have run out of mummies little helper…
