Having been approved on the Town Hall´s blueprint for Santa Pola and Gran Alacant (the Plan General) in 2006 many people bought houses in the area on the strength of that information. When will Gran Alacant see a golf course?
From Page 1. Unfortunately the financial crisis, which started at the end of December 2007, put a stop to all that with banks not lending, or making it very hard to get a mortgage. So when will it be built? It’s a very hard question to answer as before the golf course can be started the properties that will be next to it need to be built as they will supply the irrigation water to the golf courses (yes, there will be more than one) via a recycling plant at the course. So then next question is who is going to build the houses, and that will be the big construction companies but they will have to make huge investments to get the projects under way. However, with the housing market once again on the up perhaps we can start to be a little more optimistic about the building of the golf

courses which of course would benefit locals and local businesses alike with an inevitable influx of trade and jobs to name just two positive consequences of the golf courses being built. On the Plan General there are three golf courses approved (one 18 hole and two 9 hole courses) located opposite Gran Alacant and stretching along to Balsares. If you want to take a look at the Plan General for yourself you can see a copy on the wall in the Town Hall office in Gran Alacant. The GA Golf Course that never was Part of the Plan General
Many people who bought a property in Gran Alacant in the early 2000’s will remember the advertising hoarding that stood opposite what is now Altomar 1 in Avenida Escandinavia. A property construction company (you all know who I mean...) had put one up in the 1990’s declaring that a golf course would be built on that patch of land, stretching from where the Post Office is up to Calle Monte de Santa Pola (BBVA bank). It was a false promise and once they’d sold the houses in that area funnily enough the proposed golf course poster was gone.

Pick up three pieces of rubbish when you visit a beach

“Take 3” is an environmental initiative that invites everyone to take three pieces of rubbish with them when they visit the beach or any waterway. In 2009, Tim Silverwood founded “Take 3”. He wanted to raise awareness of the consequences of marine debris - and in particular plastics - on the world’s oceans and the species who rely on it for survival. We know that five trillion plastic pieces are floating in the oceans. While countries start banning plastics from supermarkets and restaurants, we as consumers must refuse, reduce and recycle plastic on a daily basis. “Take 3” has also invited well-known ambassadors to promote the clean beach cause. Ben Player, three-time world bodyboarding champion, is the new face behind the rubbish pick up movement. He will help spread the message. “’Take 3’ is a cool initiative to encourage lovers of the beach and ocean to do a small service for Mother Nature by collecting a few pieces of garbage from the beach and disposing of it appropriately,” underlines Player. “It feels good to do good things. It’s a small task, but if we all do it then we will make a massive difference.”

Gran Alacant resident and owner of the popular bar in the Masa Square, Roger Staples, was the victim of a robbery on the 6th of February and lost possessions and cash worth over four thousand euros. The opportunistic thief smashed the rear window of Roger’s BMW and grabbed the bag before anyone saw anything. Having only just parked the car Roger was inside talking when the incident happened and he was back to the car within minutes of having left. Obviously someone had been watching him and police have appealed to locals to give them any information if they saw anything suspicious around midday in the car park outside of Roger’s bar. Roger, who was hugely upset by the incident, lost a lot of personal items as well as valuable including, a Louis Vuitton bag, an iPad mini, his Gucci sunglasses and Armani reading glasses were also taken and his Louis Vuitton wallet which contained over three thousand five hundred euros in cash. If you see anything suspicious at all in the area the police encourage you to call, no matter whether it turns out to be something totally innocent. You can contact them on, 965 41 11 03.

PLAN TO EXTEND CLOT Elche Town Hall ask the Valencian Government for permission to prevent future construction The town proposes to extend the protected area of the Clot de Galvany The Environment department prepares a report to justify the need to extend the protection the land and the environment and prevent urbanisation projects from being developed nearby The idea is to stop the construction of more houses near to the natural park and that areas such as the Fondet de la Senieta or the lomas and salinas of Balsares are preserved as part of the same natural space. This is the objective that has been set by the parties in Elche Town Hall, which has just completed the preparation of a report with is intended to ask the Generalitat Valenciana to authorise the extension of the Clot de Galvany natural site, which is rich in flora and fauna. The Clot de Galvany currently covers an area of 366 hectares, which are protected as a municipal natural site. The intention of the government team from Elche is to double the surface area that is protected taking it by a total of 343 hectares, which is the area of the Fondet de la Senieta, and the hills and salinas of Balsares. The objective is for the municipal natural area to have a total of 709 protected hectares.

The ´Forgotten’ Urb’ Time to update one of GA’s oldest areas? Residents in one of Gran Alacant’s oldest urbanisations are appealing to the Town Hall to sort out the problems that they have with the services including street lighting and the condition of the roads. Calling themselves ‘The forgotten of Gran Alacant’ they say their issues go unanswered by the local councillors and that the urbanisation is falling in to ruins in places. It’s clear the roads and pathways need to be looked at but so far the Town Hall has been reluctant to step in. Built in 1988, Panorama boasts some of the best views in the area and have been very much sought after to reform but the lack of maintenance on paths, walls and roads means that its not the easiest place to get around.
OVER THERE & OVER HERE A new study from the UK Office of National Statistics (ONS) sheds light on the British expatriate population in Spain, and also looks at the Spanish expatriate community in the UK. The report, released at the end of last year, reveals there were 296,600 British citizens resident in Spain during 2016, and 121,000 of them (40%) were aged 65 and over. The number of British expats in this age bracket has more than doubled since 2006. The figures come from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE), and cross referencing them with data from the UK Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) broadly bears them out. DWP figures show that 108,433 recipients of the UK State Pension were resident in Spain in November 2016, which is close enough to the 121,000 expat population aged 65 and over to suggest both figures quantify the same group with some accuracy.

BREXIT - UK NATIONALS IN THE EU: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Information on the rights and status of UK nationals living and travelling in the European Union (EU) following the triggering of Article 50 from the British Consul The Prime Minister has been clear that safeguarding the rights of UK nationals in the EU and EU citizens living in the UK was her first priority for the negotiations.
We have now delivered on that commitment and reached an agreement with the European Commission on citizens’ rights. The agreement will provide certainty to the over a million UK nationals and their family members living in the EU. On 19 December, the Prime Minister wrote to UK nationals living in Europe with details of the agreement reached with the Commission in the first phase of the negotiations. The UK and European Commission will now include the agreement on citizens’ rights in the overall Withdrawal Agreement between the UK and the EU.
Agreement on rights for UK nationals and their families
The agreement we have reached for UK nationals and their family members is: UK nationals, as well as their family members covered by the agreement, who are lawfully residing in a EU27 Member State by 29 March 2019, will be able to continue to reside in that Member State. Children born or adopted outside of a UK national’s resident Member State after the 29 March 2019 will also be covered by this agreement. Close family members (spouses, civil partners and unmarried partners, de-

pendent children and grandchildren and dependent parents and grandparents) will be able to join UK nationals in their Member State of residence after exit under these rules, where the relationship existed on 29 March 2019 and continues to exist when they wish to move to join their UK national family member. EU27 Member States may require UK nationals and their family members covered by the agreement to apply to obtain a status conferring the right of residence and/ or obtain a residency document. UK nationals and their family members covered by the agreement will be able to be absent from their Member State of residence for up to 5 years without losing their right to return. UK nationals and their family members covered by the agreement will continue to have the same access as they currently do to healthcare, pensions and other benefits. More information is available in the Joint Report from the negotiators of the EU and the UK on progress, and in the Comparison Table of the UK and EU positions on Citizens’ Rights.

For UK nationals who move to the EU after the UK’s withdrawal on 29 March 2019, the proposed implementation period (announced by the Prime Minister in
her Florence speech in September) would mean they can still live, work and study in the EU after the UK has left the EU. How long this period lasts is subject to negotiations, however it is likely to be around 2 years.

Dear GA News Well here we are in the coldest month in Gran Alacant, but never mind we are looking to summer with the warm Med sea and it´s beaches not to mention that long Esplanade in Los Arenales which is ideal for a trip in a wheelchair. Just a moment have you ever tried to reach it in a wheelchair? I thought not. The pavement downhill n Avenida Mediterráneo is so broken up by tree roots that it is dangerous. Of course you CAN pass with care except that doing so inclines you towards the road and if you fall with the speed of the buses and cars not to mention the cyclists. I don´t give much hope you won´t be injured. I did ask at Santa Pola, but they said it was a problem for Elche and you can guess what Elche said, I am sure that people in the Town Hall have a degree in buck passing. Ah well, at least I can see the sea from my garden, Bob

Dear Richard, My laptop gets very hot when I have it on my lap, so hot that I have move it after a while. Why would that happen? And is it safe? Richard says: Laptops will generate more heat when busier and when ventilation becomes blocked, either by external fan vent blocking or as a result of a build up of dust inside. This can cause the thermal compound used on cpus to become drier and less effective and may need renewing.

The Tentacles of Gran Alacant
We liken GA to an octopus, in our house. You must remember that platform game some years ago, the first one that spoke when you played, called The Day Of The Tentacle and is now a classic. We know many people who visited GA and its tentacle reached out and tickled their fancy enticing them to buy, and this has proven true many times in the 15 years we have been holidaying there. The furthest we know it reached is Canada, where ten years ago, as a young teenager, a young girl was forced on a three month trip to Gran Alacant with her parents. She was friendly with my lads and then disappeared off into the ether as many friendships do. About 18 months ago she popped up on the interweb thingy and is now more than friendly with one of my boys. Our relations with other countries is important, especially now we are leaving the EU, big mistake, but we, as individuals, do our best to keep these relationships happy as we have been trying to do with our Canadian guest, never realising how strained relations can become. The poor girl after a journey of 34 hours arrived poorly with some Canadian plague and a bark on her like a grizzly bear chewing barbed wire. We kept her locked away in the sick room for two days burning with a temperature and called it quarantine, but she was cheap to keep as she couldn’t eat anything. She struggled to look happy and tried to rally and just as she did, we were hit with a hybrid or her plague, mixed with the Japanese and Australian brand of flu going around here and that knocked us off our feet. Three days in bed with all the usual joys that come with real flu. Our guest barking through the nights, and the neighbour complains there is a grizzly loose in the area. The police are out with tranquilliser guns and a

helicopter, I know because its light was on our bedroom window. I crawled out of bed naked to see what was going on, he waved while I was in the spotlight, he also sighted his gun my way until he realised he was mistaken, I was just not looking my best, but I was definitely bare. We are keeping stum, too ill to move. Day 10, the sun is shining for the first time, we are up, but only just, flu has turned to pneumonia, so Britsh chin up and stiff upper lip time, she is still ill with only 8days to go to enjoy this wonderful, damp, dreary, English winter. But where to go, what do to keep the steady balance between our two great continents? Pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast, maybe, I rushed out and milked a maple tree, but no egg on toast is required. I thought of visits to a stately home, a museum, but she wants to go to a cat cafe in Nottingham. I’ll leave that one to the son. Already the sky begins to darken; it’s 10 o’clock in the morning, one hour of azure sky is more than we can manage. The clouds are lumping up. She takes a turn for the worst, but the Dr decides its viral and can do nothing. I tend her through the night, patting her back, emptying her crud from the hot vapour bowl and remain sleep deprived for the last few days until the day dawns, it’s time for the poor girl to go back to Canada, will they take her though? We pack her full of flu tablets, Nytol, cough medicine anything to keep her quiet while she checks in at the airport, with a note around her neck telling the cabin crew to wake her in Toronto for her connecting flight. I crawl back home, it’s my turn to rest, my bacterial pneumonia is knocking my socks off, and I ask myself as I often do, What is this life all about, what are we doing here and why aren’t we in GA?

Try seeing change in your life from a different point of view. Life is a process of growing, from the cradle to the grave and we cannot avoid change, whether it is in our lives or the world around us, or even the changes that take place within us. Change is inevitable, and some of us grow and expand, and appreciate life more because of it. Others sometimes resent change and seem to find it difficult to deal with. From a negative situation like losing a loved one, that kind of change can never be experienced without feeling pain, and that kind of change in our lives may not be what we planned for or expected, but with the right attitude we can even find a way to survive the sad situations that confront us from time to time. Realise that the things we have cherished are not altogether lost, because having possessed things we love, and people we love, nothing can EVER take them away from us in our hearts. They will always be with us in our memory. When you feel unwelcome change don’t allow your thoughts to stretch out into a bewildering future……this present moment is enough for you to deal with and master, and the attitude towards the circumstances which confront you is much more vital than the circumstances themselves. Have confidence in your own ability to face up to the challenge! Even at our worst and lowest point invariably a new kind of happiness can open out if we let it. and when we least expect it . Amazing isn’t it, that life can hold more happiness in store if we keep a firmly held belief in all things positive? Losing the full use of our limbs may well affect us as we get older, but we are in control of how we react to that kind of change. There are the most wonderful people who have serious physical problems who carry on with their attitude to life as if nothing at all is wrong, or even different. How are they able to do that if we cannot do it too? I have gone through my life admiring those who set a great example to us all as far as being able to deal with life’s set backs. I have people in mind like that as I write. Many people live on their own, either due to circumstances or choice, and they can often be an inspiration if they choose to like themselves enough to value the quality of their own life, whatever else has gone on around them. There is a definite talent in not allowing things to destroy us, and to appreciate all the things that we could so often take for granted. Life’s experiences serve to prove to us that we have hidden resources which may have been so far unused in our lives, and the courage and determination we exercise are both a discovery and an outlet….proving what kind of persons we really are. Why not be the kind of person you want to admire, look up to and respect? It is never too late to make the changes needed…. we learn from the cradle to the grave and we can all learn how! Even in Spain, where not so long ago all sports people were called Garcia or Hernández, North Africans are starting to take over middle distance running, some sprinters and hurdlers are appearing from the direction of the Caribbean, and we even have a Wimbledon junior tennis champion called Davidovich! Take a look at the surnames of the Swiss national football team, and you’ll see representatives of half a dozen ethnic groups. None of this matters unless you take seriously the nationalist stuff like the playing of the anthem at Olympic Games. Yes, we all like to see our lot winning, I know, but do permit me a little cynicism.

Do footballers need so much rest? I got around to wondering, not for the first time, when Real Madrid were summarily eliminated from the Copa del Rey, Zidane having ‘rested’ most of his star players (Keylor, Carvajal, Modric, Casemiro, Kroos, Bale and Ronaldo) in preparation for their league match three days later. Is ninety minutes’ football so very taxing? Much of the time, a player spends wandering around, or standing still, darting about in short bursts, or occasionally having a bit of a sprint. Then he spends the rest of his life doing a training session for a couple of hours a day, then his life is his own. Compare this to a tennis player’s lot. He (or she) plays matches, sometimes lasting up to five hours of sheer effort, every other day, enduring the psychological stress of tie-breaks and the like – all year round. And we won’t even talk about cyclists in the big tours, who ride a hundred and odd kilometres a day, for day

his feast day, April 23, to fire arrows from the castle. To know more about the history of the area, take a look at the Archaeological Museum Camil Visedo, inside a lovely Gothic and Renaissance building in the old Placeta del Caró. This charming little square was the centre of medieval Alcoy.
DO YOU HAVE THE MORALE OF AN ALCOYANO? Medieval history, fiestas, food, mountains and nature parks are just a few of the jewels in Alcoy’s crowns. With the magnificent Sierra de Mariola natural park and mountain range sitting behind the town and the Font Roja park, 8kms south of the city, this historic inland city is ideally placed for enjoying country views - or bracing walks - while getting to know a charming piece of inland Spain. Known as the city of bridges, Alcoy’s fine wrought-iron bridges over the rivers and ravines are perfect for leaning
on while you marvel at the mountains and natural landscape completely surrounding the city. You don’t want to forget your camera with such beauty to inspire you. And there’s more! Head into the heart of Alcoy for amazing architecture and elegant Spanish squares. The largest is the emblematic Plaza Espana, home to the equally impressive Iglesia de Santa Maria. Pop inside to see a mural by Alcoy artist Ramón Castañer in the main altar. In this square you’ll find other outstanding monumants including the town hall and the Teatro Calderon. In 1995, the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava remodelled the square and designed the underground Lonja de San Jorge centre to look like the skeleton of a large animal. This square provides a formidable backdrop for fiestas such as Moors and Christians, considered to be one of the finest in Spain. From April 21 to 24 the sound of gunpowder and battle cries rumble through the streets to commemorate the battles between the Moors and Christians which took place in the 13th century. Alcoy’s patron saint, St George, makes an appearance on horseback on
While wandering around the city centre, you’ll find many ornate old buildings such as the modernist Casa del Pavo with its ornamental facade and turkeys on the door lintels, and the Iglesia de San Mauro and San Francisco church which houses a great collection of sacred art. While here, make sure you try the local cuisine such as stuffed peppers (bajoques farcides), a fish and vegetable stew (borreta), bean and meat stew (olleta alcoyana) and sweet almonds (peladillas). It’s also the home town of the Serpis olives and has a museum of the same name dedicated entirely to the favourite Spanish snack. You may be wondering why we’re asking if you have the morale of an Alcoyano? That’s because there’s a saying ‘to have more morale than Alcoyano’ meaning never throwing in the towel. It’s not absolutely sure how this saying came about but, rest assured, it is to do with football. The story goes that their football club Alcoyano were losing a game 0-13 but still kept trying to get back into the game. So if you want to see this never-say-die attitude for yourself, from Gran Alacant, it’ll take about an hour to drive through spectacular countryside inland about 75kms inland to Alcoy. You can take the gentle drive on the A7 and we’d recommend a short stop at the little toy town of Ibi, which we mentioned in last week’s article. Alternatively, take the A70 and CV800 to stop at the turron-making town of Jijona and enjoy spectacular mountain views before heading up to Alcoy.

MONEY AND DRUGS Has sport gone completely mad? Just take a look at this week’s news. (might be old news by the time you read this, but I doubt much will change) Manchester City have paid 70 million for a very ordinary central defender! And Barcelona more than twice that for a reasonably decent midfielder. It doesn’t seem long ago that eyebrows were raised when players changed hands for 20,000 quid, does it? I’m not an advocate of things standing still, or returning to the days when footballers lived in poverty after their playing days were over, but come on, what is the chance of a small
club breaking through into the big time? Yes, I know all about Leicester City a couple of seasons ago, and such as Leganes and Eibar compete pretty well in La Liga, but take a look at the very top, and you’ll see that Arsene Wenger was right when he said that four top European leagues were decided by December, and by money. The other headline is the one about drugs. Again money, or medals (= money) drives that one. An athlete found guilty as sin, having a stash of performance-enhancing drugs in his home has just been handed two years’ suspension. Two years! For cheating ‘clean’ athletes of their rightful place. Oh, please. Just who is making these decisions? I’d like a word.
HAPLESS HERCULES LOOK FOR ANOTHER TRAINER TO TURN THEIR SEASON AROUND Hercules are tallying up a more impressive score off the pitch than on it. They have about to notch up a hat-trick of trainers this season after saying ‘adios’ to Claudio Barragán following another goalless draw. The Alicante team are already on their way to their third coach of the season after dispensing with Gustavo Siviero in October and now Barragán. The latest decision was made after a fourth consecutive draw for Hercules against Ebro at the Rico Pérez stadium at the weekend. Having only managed to win five points in the last six games and with have a poor record of one win, eight defeats and one draw in their past 10 games, something – or someone – had to give. Their fans have not seen their side win at home on the past three months and are
looking for something positive to keep any hopes of promotion alive. This latest draw against Ebro leaves Hercules in a tricky position but it is not irreversible. With 13 games to play, ?Los Herculanos are six points from the playoff places.
ELCHE Their close neighbours Elche are in a much healthier position in fourth place following their 1-1 draw against Atletico Balaeres. It wasn’t one of their best performances and they only managed to scrape a point,thanks to a late goal by Nino in the 92nd minute. The Almerian said it was a positive draw in a difficult game where little football was played. He felt that his goal was justified because it was difficult to get into the game and it’s an important point for them. The Mallorcan side went ahead in the 33rd minute through a penalty converted by their captain Francesc Fullana. Although Elche had a chance to equalise just befre halftime when Ivan Sanchez’s shot hit the post, instead they had to wait until the dying minutes to snatch victory from ATB.
