Tourism expenditure: highest spending by German residents Germans were the biggest EU spenders on international travel, totalling EUR 72.1 billion in 2017 The economic importance of international tourism can be measured by looking at the ratio of international travel receipts relative to GDP; these data are from balance of payments statistics and include business travel, as well as travel for pleasure. In 2016, the ratio of travel receipts to GDP was highest, among the EU Member States, in Croatia (18.6 %), Cyprus (13.7 %) and Malta (13.2 %), confirming the importance of tourism to these countries (see Table 3). In absolute terms, the highest international travel receipts in 2016 were recorded in Spain (EUR 54.7 billion), France (EUR 38.3 billion) and the United Kingdom (37.4 billion), followed by Italy (36.4 billion) and Germany (33.8 billion).

Town hall conducts survey of the population to develop a plan to attract more companies or the link the fishing sector with tourism Improve the cultural commitment, link fishing to the tourist sector, increase industrial land, improve the transparency of the town hall or give more voice to the residents with decision making. These are some of the hundreds of challenges ahead of Santa Pola in the medium and long term. The seaside villa is taking note of its weaknesses and strengths to develop a strategic city plan for the future. The town hall, through the Local Development Agency, has completed the first phase of this plan with the presentation, two weeks ago, of the results found in the
various sectors. In the study, popular opinion has been noted through workshops and surveys of various people of all ages, also it was aimed at the staff and representatives of the town hall itself. The opinions of young people where perhaps surprising, for example, 34% believe they will not have job opportunities in this area and plan to leave the town, while the greatest concern for 69% of respondents is the lack of leisure and cultural facilities, which the majotity feel that there is insufficient of either. The study points out the main activity of Santa Pola, 77% of the companies belong to the services sector and the fishing activity has declined. It is thought that there could be a connection between tourism and the fishing sector, including converting Santa Pola port into a nautical industrial club to counteract the

The expansion of public land also enters as a challenge to get more companies onto the industrial estate, and to increase the amount of accommodation available. Also, another challenge would be to increase the number of residents registered, which currently stands at 31,137. The study warns, for example, that the population is slightly aging, surpassing the national average, with signs of continuing to decline due to economic recession and low birth rates. As for households, 55% of the homes are second homes, therefore people expect tourism to be seasonally adjusted and the population increases all year, not only in the high season. This diagnosis unifies the criteria of other plans such as the territorial strategy of the Valencian Community that seeks to connect ecosystems, renovation of coastal façades and better connections with nearby localities or between areas of the town such as Gran Alacant. As the local government has repeatedly stated, another of the challenges included in this report would be to achieve sustainable urban mobility, with the drafting of a plan for "pedestrianisation progressively and rationally", where it enters future projects. On municipal management, the study points out that municipal transparency is poorly developed and remains at only 8%, according to the 2015 data. However, some matter have already begun to be acheived, such as the development of a new web page that is more accessible or the inclusion of the transparency portal, although electronic administration has not yet been implemented to carry out paperwork from home, recently it has been ap proved for that facility to happen.
UNEMPLOYMENT DROPS AS GRAN ALACANT & SANTA POLA SHOW THE WAY
The number of unemployed in Santa Pola in June 2018 was 2,299 people, which means a decrease of 188 people, that is, a drop of 7.56% over the previous month and a decrease of 3,36% over the same month last year (June 2017), with a decline of 80 in the unemployed number. The decline in unemployment in Santa Pola has been much quicker than that of other towns. In 2018, we had a decrease of 391 people, which represented a drop of 14.54%, with decreases maintained since February 2018, where it fell 0.33%. Unemployment data for the month of June 2018 is the best for the last ten years, which is not bad news, but it must improve, considering the number of contracts that have not been made for workers. The decline in unemployment in the sector without defined economic activity has increased by 5.32% (10 people) followed by construction, agriculture and industry with 4.79%, 3.72% and 3.19% respectively, giving the largest drop in unemployment in services by almost 83%.

Traders & Residents Not Happy with Pedestrianisation of Santa Pola
The People’s Party complains that it has already been a year since the “HUMANIZATION PLAN” was launched. The PP say it does not work after taking in the first measures that were adopted for the aforementioned Plan with the closure of the access road to González Vicens Avenue and the Santa Pola Glorieta and its adjacent streets, pedestrianising the entire centre of Santa Pola. As a direct consequence of the closure of streets, the staff of the Ministry of Defence had to change the direction of important streets in the town, among them, Almirante Antequera Street, Antina Street, Dean Llopez Street, etc. Also as a direct consequence of the closure of the streets, a significant number of parking spaces were lost. The Humanization Plan, say the PP, has been an act of imposition by the town hall, not consensual with the political groups of the opposition and, what is even more serious, without the previous

For the residents of the closed streets, the Mayor of Santa Pola, Doña Yolanda Seva Ruiz, already said in a meeting at the town hall that they were going to make Residents Cards for the month by September of 2017, however, to date the issuance of said cards still hasn’t happened.
For the last couple of years it has been getting worse, and especially this year my husband still hasn’t received his Father`s Day cards and they were sent in plenty of time, the same happened to Birthday cards. I also missed an important Hospital appointment in February, because the letter took 3 weeks to be delivered. We also spoke to a lady at our Postboxes who found a stack of letters just put in the bin along with the advertisement leaflets. My Birthday cards went up to Altomar 11, even though they were addressed to Altomar 1. Our family cannot believe we only get 2 to 3 deliveries a week, if we are lucky! It can only get worse when you see all the houses being built around us, and as mentioned in the article the Post Office hours have been reduced. Jan
La Marina Thief Caught in Santa Pola
Suspect thought to be responsible for several robberies inside vehicles in the La Marina area The Guardia Civil last week arrested a 30-year-old man of Romanian nationality, suspected of robbery in vehicles in which he steals valuables. Included were 9 charges of this type, 2 charges against road safety and a charge of theft. The beaches of Elche, specifically Playa del Pinet in the village of La Marina, were the place where he used to carry out his robberies. He ran away once when caught committing one of the crimes, but days later he was stopped following active monitoring by agents. The crook took advantage of the circumstances of the bathers who leave their parked cars while they go to the beach for a long time unattended, that is why every summer the citizen safety device from the Guardia Civil is reinforced throughout the coast, although not always listened to.

Though most will find it hard to believe, there are some people with UK Passports, living here in Spain, who voted for Brexit! That, in an era when unity has never been more important, and we should all be striving to get together, not split apart. So are you proud of that stance, alongside Nigel Garbage, er, sorry, Farage, lovely Boris, and now Trump, who has decided he likes Brexit (thinks it keeps out dirty foreigners) and the turncoat May woman, who was for ‘remain,’ remember? Just what advantages can Brexit bring? Keep the pound? You were doing that anyway, though just why, I can’t think. Keep out immigrants? Ha! If Britain had a Mediterranean coastline, just see if a bit of paper would stop them. And Trump (descended from immigrants, married to a recent one) can talk, eh? I doubt whether immigration can ever be halted, and, in any case, the growth of immigrant communities already residing in Britain is such that any further ingress is of little importance. It is worth remembering that in the USA’s population less than 1% is native American – the rest are immigrants! So is there anything else? Sovereignty? Nobody’s going to stop you singing ‘God Save the Queen,’ or waving flags around, even wearing silly hats at Ascot, but if somebody could stop those idiots jumping off balconies at Magaluf the ambulance crews would be grateful…

The Autocares Baile company has been acquired by the Vectalia group. The family business in Santa Pola has always worked the main routes between the town itself and Alicante, Arenales del Sol, Gran Alacant, San Vicente del Raspeig, the airport and Agua Amarga. The El Altet and Elche routes, since the end of May, have belonged to the Subus Group of Transportation. The Arias family is behind Vectalia, the most important Argentine holding company in public transport for the area. With this operation, published in the Official Gazette of the Mercantile Register of Alicante, they will increase the current services they offer. Myth #1: Guys Don’t Communicate Men like to talk—have you ever tried asking us the best way to get somewhere? But we often censor ourselves based on how we think women might react to a deeper honesty. So, there are times we just don’t bother. Myth #2: A Woman’s Looks Are Everything Non, nein, nope. A woman’s beauty is a thing to behold, and sometimes we can behold it at the wrong times (like when passing another woman on the pavement). But that’s just visual titillation. Myth #3: Men Don’t Take Things Personally This is certainly a myth we would like to believe about ourselves. Nothing fazes us; we’re breezy, easy, confident.
Yeah, right. The fact is that men take many things personally—the light teasing about our paunch, the less-than-stellar bedroom performance, the snide colleague at work—but the principles of masculinity prevent our admitting them.
Myth #4: Men Don’t Listen to Criticism It’s hard to argue that this one is a myth. But the reason men can be diva-like when it comes to criticism is because said criticism is rarely delivered in a way we understand. Women tend to talk around the problem, but it’s OK to get in our faces every now and then and just say what’s on your mind. Myth #5: Boys and Girls Are So Different Okay, so your son prefers horseplay and trucks, and your daughter likes dolls and playing dress-up. Who cares! The things that matter in life—whether your kids are ethical; whether they are kind to others; how they achieve self-fulfilment.
How many people actually believe in astrology? Astrology and horoscope columns are a familiar feature of tabloid newspapers, women’s magazines and the web. They claim, controversially for some, that there is a meaningful relationship between celestial and terrestrial events, especially human affairs. Astrology as we know it now, linking planets to the 12 zodiac signs in order to manage life on Earth, was devised in the Middle East and classical Greece between the fifth and first centuries BCE. It was largely transmitted to the 21st century via the Islamic world. These days, astrology arouses vilification from two corners. On one side are evangelical Christians who regard it as seriously misleading at best, and Satanic at worst. On the other, sceptics denounce the idea that our destiny may lie in the stars as fraudulent and even harmful. If such claims are true, it’s important to work out how many people believe in astrology, and why. The time is ripe for some serious investigation.
Meanings and belief Just how many people believe in astrology and why they still do – even when their own experiences prove otherwise – is a curiosity for many. But in order to answer these questions, we need to first develop more fluid categories of belief and disbelief. We cannot simply say that followers of astrology wholly believe in it, or that others completely disbelieve. It is a complex question, even for professional astrologers and researchers. Evidence suggests that over 90% of adults know their sun (zodiac) signs. Some surveys also indicate that well over half agree that the signs’ character descriptions are a good fit: Ariens are energetic, Taureans stubborn, and Scorpios secretive, for example. To find out what the most involved “believers” – that is, those who are dedicated followers or professionally involved in astrology – think, I distributed questionnaires to public groups and astrology conferences from 1998 to 2012. The
purpose of this recently published research was specifically to establish how many people believe in astrology, and why. Most published figures for belief in astrology are derived from Gallup polls taken in Britain, Canada and the US between 1975 and 1996 – to which around 25% of adults polled answered “yes” to questions such as “do you believe in horoscopes?”. We might expect that all practitioners and students of astrology would say they believe. However, when I put the question to delegates at a British Astrological Association conference, just 27% said “yes” – about the same as the general population. When I asked the astrologers who didn’t “believe” for their reasons, they replied that astrology is no more a matter of belief than television or music: it is real, so has nothing to do with belief. Or to put it another way, people only believe in things which don’t exist. Which is why public surveys on belief can come up with misleading results.

Here it comes again, the day that at least 10% of the population of the world can celebrate. A day the rest of the population don’t care about and ignore. In the pc world, we are supposed to accept minorities and embrace them, but up to 90% do not even know of this celebration. What is it? A new religion? No, it is a date in August, not the glorious 12th that some may have heard of; the beginning of the grouse shooting season, get ready to duck, grouse they will be after you soon, but the day which follows; August the 13th, yes, International Left-Handers day. Meant to promote awareness of the inconveniences faced by left-handers in a predominantly right-handed world. It celebrates their uniqueness and differences something most people, that is the right-handed population, never give a thought, to the struggles lefties, southpaws or sinistrals, whatever you want to call us It’s time to get some recognition for all we have to put up with, in a right-handed world. It shows off our strengths too, because we learn to adapt amidst biased designs like milk saucepans with one pouring lip on the left of the handle which means only right-handers can use it safely. Pens, scissors, corkscrews, and power tools, can be a trial too, even some jobs as I discovered when applying for a job as a guilder in a famous ceramic factory. They would not initially take lefties on; they do now…. At school, I was told I held hands with the devil and was repeatedly smacked for holding my ink pen in the WRONG hand and for smudging all of my work. On this day, the 13th, special events are usually set up around the world, such as designated ‘left-handed zones’ where righties are encouraged to use their non-dominant hand to perform simple tasks. These special areas might only include lefty tools and utensils in order to force people into finding out what it’s like being a southpaw in a right-handed world. Because let’s face it, sometimes it can be a proverbial pain in the ass! Celebrate Left Handed Day by showing that special left-handed person some recognition, love and attention if it’s you who are left-handed, then spend the day doing anything you want. After all, rules only apply to right-handed people, don’t they? And from the Left-Handers club, yes, there is one, I found this: This event; celebrated worldwide, and in the U.K. alone there were over 20 regional events to mark the day. These included left-v-right sports matches, a left-handed tea party, pubs using left-handed corkscrews where patrons drank and played pub games with the left hand only, and nationwide “Lefty Zones” where the left-handers celebrated their creativity, adaptability and sporting prowess, whilst right-handers were encouraged to try out everyday left-handed objects to see just how awkward it can feel using the wrong equipment!

I don’t mean geographically, we’re all on the same planet, but we are all moving in different ways and the great thing in this world is not so much where we are, at any given moment in time, but in which direction we are moving.
In a previous article I have written I have mentioned that Life is a Gift….which is why it’s called The Present. Do we appreciate this gift? What are we doing with it? Do you realise that even a smile can alter circumstances, open doors and change lives? We have the opportunity every moment of our lives to make a difference……….starting with us, we can change the way we think about things, change our attitude towards things and therefore change the outcome. We are in control of our lives, and responsible for the results we get! Have you ever thought of that? You are in control right NOW! Your response to this article could be to put it down and forget it ….. YOUR choice, but you COULD decide that you were going to handle things differently and look forward to a different result in your life…again YOUR choice. Time is a wonderful thing. We take it for granted, but just consider this: You wake up each morning and you have 24 hours of life in your purse to spend…it is YOURS! You cannot get into debt, you cannot draw on the future, you can only spend the passing moment. You cannot waste tomorrow, it is kept safely for you. We shall never have any more time . We have, and have always had, all the time there is at any given moment….spend it well! I am speaking of course about those of us who are alive and well and who have every opportunity to climb out of any unhappy situation by making changes in their lives. Why can’t we start each day determined to make it more memorable than yesterday? If that seems hard or impractical then just remember that all of our life is a learning curve, and it has to start somewhere…why not today? Even if you feel uncomfortable making changes, remember that it is only by new experiences that we will make progress. I remember only too well being totally uncomfortable with certain things I have had to do in my training to be a Counsellor, but I had set my goal and I was determined to succeed. There were two ways to go, the right way, or the highway!!!! I’m glad I went through the mental and emotional pain of it all, because things are very clear to me now, and I understand where I was going wrong in life!! Just set yourself a test and just deal with ONE situation a day differently. Make a difference by enlarging your circle in life…whatever it is…and enjoying the results. Find out where you are at this moment in time and move forward to where you want to be!! Till the next time!

New Horizons Let me first introduce myself, my name is Luke and up until a few months ago, I was residing in the popular Urbanisation of Gran Alacant. Today I am living back home in the UK, spending some much needed time with family and friends before continuing on the next stage of my journey. My long term partner is still a resident in Spain, allowing me to reconnect with my Mother and Father at a difficult crossroads in their life. As an Expat, I have always been mindful that one day, I will have to return to the Country of my birth, as my parents grow older. I am using this time productively; working, volunteering and continuing to write, as I have done for a lifetime. In this column ‘Postcards From Britain,’ I want
to talk about life back home, the differences between Spain and the UK and changing attitudes as we move towards Brexit and a new European order. It felt strange returning to the UK, my flight arrived on a hot sunny afternoon at Southampton Airport. As I gingerly took my first steps on British soil, after three years away, everything felt alien, the smells different, the City I left behind, much smaller. Deep down, I was apprehensive about returning to the south coast; instantly I missed Gran Alacant, wondering what the hell I was doing ‘coming home!’ That was then and this is now; over the proceeding weeks I have settled back into British life pretty well and am thoroughly enjoying myself. The weather has been the biggest factor in
making the time here bearable. From day one, the sun has shone, hotter and longer than I can remember; the summer has been glorious, better than I could have ever expected. At times the sultry temperatures have been too much, with the humidity far higher than I have come to expect living on the Costa Blanca. Equally, on occasion the heat has been far stronger than that in Spain. Britain really does come into its own during the summer, it is a fantastic place to be; smiling faces, cheerful expressions, maybe a little too much skin on show and those lobster red tans that only the British seem to sport, but definitely a welcome break from the dark winter months. Whether hot or cold, the weather does give the British an excuse to moan, another pastime we excel at and a real sign I am home; It wouldn’t be the same
without a gripe or two! Not only are we in the middle of one of the best summers in living memory, but there has been a real sense of euphoria and excitement; a young English football team, took the World Cup by storm, grabbing the attention of a nation, uniting our divided population during a challenging period in our history. Despite our failure to reach the final, a positive, thankful Country feels great pride in what our lads have achieved, earning the respect of everyone who lives on these islands. Even me, someone who doesn’t follow football at all, feels proud at what these men accomplished; at times, whilst watching England play, I have also been swept along with the sea of emotion. It has been heart warming to see friends and foes alike come together in support of our national team. The ‘feel good’ factor is in abundance at the moment, it is a special time to be living here. Despite the difficulties of our impending departure from the European Union and the politics surrounding the logistics, the UK seems to be relishing in this current optimistic phase. Like everyone, I am looking forward to the months ahead. This may well only be a temporary stopover along the way for me, but conjecture suggests a meaningful, productive and memorable time ahead. I have never been one to pass an opportunity by, I welcome this adventure with open arms!
