It’s a world where we constantly see change, and not always for the best in many poeple’s opinion, but not far away is a little gem, the Hostal Maruja on El Pinet beach, that hasn’t changed at all since 1960. Just take a look at the two images and how little difference there is. The top one was taken in 1960 and the other in 2016 by LMN photographer Mark Welton

NEW BROOM SWEEPS CLEAN?

Rubbish piles up on the streets of urb as new company takes over Locals were in uproar at the end of June when bins on the urbanisation were overflowing due to the increase in the population in the summer months. As you can see in the images bins and other rubbish were left at the roadside covered oin rubbish. When we contacted the town hall they tod us that it was due to a change of subcontractor to deal with rubbish collection. It went on to say that it was aware of the bad state of the bins in the streets and that from July 1st the new company would be working hard to provide new bins and clear the streets of rubbish as soon as possible, asking residents to be a little pàtient with the new company. The town hall also went on to apologise for any inconvenience to residents. David Davies, a local resident, stated on Facebook that

he had been out with a councilor for the URB to see first hand what was happening with the change over. He said that the new bins were already in place, Oasis had been completed and that they were working in the southern section of the urb to be followed by LaEscuera. The old yellow and blue bins were being taken to a compound in San Fulgencio where they would be transferred to a truck for recycling. He also reported two new large roadsweepers in operation along with workmen to clear the weeds. However another local wrote in to say that only four days into the new refuse contract and things were worse than ever, stating “I know people have asked for patience to allow the new contractors to sort things out but this demonstrates logistical incompetence on an industrial scale. I know the blame lies mainly on the people responsible for dumping the rubbish but it IS the responsibility of the council to keep the streets clean. It is what we pay taxes for and as we are not getting the service surely the council are guilty of fraud. The only ones happy are the rats, cockroaches and other vermin.” One message the town hall wanted to get over was that firstly Ginssa have nothing to do with the new waste company. Ginssa were paid up until Saturday 30th June, to finish their contract. They failed to do this and downed tools on Wednesday, leaving chaos behind them. So far 60% of the urbanizations have new bins. The remaining 40% will be completed by Monday. The new company are working 24/7 to get areas cleaned & changed over. Within the next 10 days you should see a big difference with new bins and areas around the bins will be cleaned and swept. We shall keep an eye on the situation over the coming weeks and keep you updated with any news. In the meantime if you have something to say please contact us at, lamarinanewspaper@gmail.com.

Nigel Update

Update on our little champion! The family arrived home on the 3rd of july from pamplona. Nigel was in surgery for a very long time, five hours, in ICU for 24 hours and had 13 stitches. The treatment was for a dangerous virus that goes in and gets to work on killing the cancer cell and hopefully shrink the tumor. The virus was a trial treatment from Houston, Texas with a good record so far and Nigel has been given a new oncologist who is in Madrid and is private so they will get to see her in two months. Nigel will need ongoing treatment but will not know what it will be until the family get to Madrid.. So let’s hope we can still keep fundraising!

BEST FAMILY ACTIVITIES

ON THE COSTA BLANCA Sun, sea and sand is the name of the game on the Costa Blanca, but all those with kids will know you’re going to need more than that for a great family holiday. Luckily, there is a whole host of family activities in the Costa Blanca, from theme parks to dinosaurs and caves to chocolate-making. So, when you feel like venturing out from your luxury family villa, you’ll be spoilt for choice. 1. Set off on a cycle ride Whether you want to soar through the sky, skim across the water or stay firmly planted on terra firma, Why not head up to Benidorm or a day of gentle cycling through the old streets of Altea and Albir, stopping for well-deserved refreshments along the way? Breathe in the citrus smells wafting from the orange, lemon and almond groves as you pass along the paths. With bikes for children and seats for babies, this is a great activity that the whole family can take part in. The adventures don’t stop there though, and you could also opt for adrenaline-fuelled jeep safaris, paintball battles, sea kayaking, scuba diving or a family fishing trip where you can catch your dinner for the evening. 2. Challenge yourself at Elche Palmeral Aventuras A true fun-for-all-the-family adventure park, Palmeral Aventuras offers a day of action, adrenaline and laughter. Take aim during archery or slide along a hair-raising zip line through the trees. Challenge the kids to a game of laser wars, climb the 20 metre-high climbing wall or take a more relaxed row around the palm-fringed lake. There are also eight adventure circuits with more than 120 game challenges to have a go at, with rope swings and wobbling bridges as well as ladders and puzzles to solve. There are activities for even the smallest of children and more extreme challenges for bigger, braver kids. 3. Satisfy dinomaniacs at DinoPark DinoPark, located just outside of Algar, is sure to be a family crowd-pleaser. Scattered across the Spanish landscape here are over 30 life-sized prehistoric beasts, which give kids a wonderful sense of scale as they gaze up at Triceratops, Velociraptors, Diplodocus and of course the ferocious Tyrannosaurus Rex. The sound effects and robotic movements will delight younger children and there is a 3D cinema too. Take a picnic and sit among the incredibly realistic-looking dinosaurs; it will be a little like entering your very own Jurassic Park movie.

4. Treat your taste buds at Museo del Chocolate Tell the kids you’re off to a museum and watch their faces drop. Then tell them it’s a chocolate museum and turn those frowns upside down! Tucked in the charming little town of Villajoyosa, and housed in a 19th-century rural home, is the museum of the Valor Chocolate company. The company have been crafting sweet treats since 1881 and their bars, bonbons and hot chocolate are some of Spain’s best-loved confectionery. You will find a history of the company as well as machines and tools used in the production over the decades. And yes, there will be plenty of opportunities to nibble some chocolate too. 5. Head underground to discover the Coves del Canelobre Delight your children with this adventure deep underground. Located just 24 kilometres from Alicante, at an altitude of 700 metres above sea level on the Cabecó Mountain, these caves are an impressive maze of eerie shapes, echoing acoustics and dripping water. There are vast cathedral-like chambers (some of the biggest in Spain) as well as millions of stalactites and stalagmites, some of which meet in the middle to create towering columns. Take a 30-minute guided to tour to learn more about the geology of the caves and see if you can make out shapes and figures in the natural formations. 6. Set sail Set out to the tiny and tranquil island of Tabarca just off the coast of Santa Pola. Although Tabarca is just 1,800 metres long and 400 metres wide, the island offers lots to keep children happy for a day. Try snorkelling in a protected marine and bird reserve or exploring the ruined walls of the old fort. Tell the kids tales of the pirates that once used this island to smuggle their treasures and see if they can discover pirate hideaways in the rocky shoreline. Euro Tours Guide offer sailings from several ports. Opt for a glass-bottomed boat; the sight of schools of fish scooting by underfoot is a sure-fire child-pleaser. 7. Scream at the top of your voice at Terra Mitica Unbridled fun is the name of the game at Benidorm’s Terra Mitica, an amusement park built around the themes of ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome. There are some truly heart-stopping rides and massive rollercoasters, promising all manner of swirling, spinning, upside-down mayhem to get the adrenaline pumping. There are gentler rides for smaller children too, as well as shows and spectacles during which Roman gladiators battle it out for honour, the mummies of ancient Egypt come alive and horse-drawn chariots carry the famous Hercules.

The night of June the 23rd may well be a celebration of San Juan and a great time to get out and enjoy the fiestas. Unfortunately June the 24th has become a day of shame for the thousands of revellers that fill the beaches of El Pinet and others. You would think that following recent publicity aboout plastic pollution and the harm it does to our seas that people would be a lot more careful with what they do with their rubbish when in a public area. Clearly not. As one contributor wrote on a local forum, “absolutely disgusting!” Strong words but no words can sum up the utter laziness, stupidity, carelessness and downright ignorance of the many people that left their litter on the beach of San Juan. One argument is that most people come from out of the area, maybe so, but a hell of a lot of the revellers on the beaches are local too, and of all ages. Now while I doubt we will find anyone putting their hand up and own up to leaving rubbish on the beach that night, I bet there are plenty who were there that will say, “it wasn’t me.” While I agreee that the good people of La Marina are mostly a respectful and peace loving bunch, among us a morons too. I’ll never understand the mentallity of people like this, nor do the vast majority. I once asked a young lady in a bar if she would just go without the plastic straw she had asked for

Page 5

for her cocktail (we had just finished discussing the plastics on the beach problem). Her reply, “My one straw won’t make any difference...” They live among us. Many locals are trying to help keep our beaches clean; following the ‘pick up 3 pieces of plastic’ campaign that we highlighted in an earlier issue. And Hector Blasco in Santa Pola and Los Arenales works tirelessly to remove plastic from the beach and raise awareness of the problems it causes. But others see it as work for anyone but them, often using the argument that it ‘keeps people in jobs...’ As I said, morons do live among us. More than 50 workers were involved in the clean up which took most of the following day and while revellers slept it off the rest of the public had no access to two beautiful beaches that are for everyone, not just the selfish.

HASTA LA VISTA!

Local town stars in new Scharzenegger movie Catral Industrial Estate was the location for the shooting of a number of scenes in the filming of Terminator 6 last month. The poligono was chosen as the setting to shoot some of the scenes from the movie which will be directed by Tim Miller and produced by James Cameron and David Ellison. This was confirmed by the mayor, Pedro Zaplana. Zaplana said that the production company made contact with the town council a few months ago, suggesting that they wanted to shoot some of the scenes from the new film in the industrial estate of San Juan. They said that it was “ideal for what they had in mind. Once provisional agreement had

been reached the company applied for authority to close a number of streets during the days scheduled for site preparation and for filming and the producer also contacted owners of the warehouses on the industrial estate to rent some of the units to store all the materials as well as to set up a site office. The mayor said that it was an important event for the municipality since it is a film that has will be seen at a national and international level. He also highlighted the economic impact for the locality since the producer is using catral companies to carry out some of the preparatory works for setting the scenes. Filming is scheduled to continue during the first half of July. The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, although it is unknown if the stars will travel to the Vega Baja.

LA MARINA MAN bert beuken SWIMS FROM TABARCA TO SANTA POLA This morning at 5.5am we left with several boats full of trained swimmers from Santa Pola to the island of Tabarca. The day that everyone had been looking forward to for months and trained for. The sun just rose, beautiful face. At half past seven we started with 1600 swimmers at the 5900 meters to Santa Pola. Halfway through the trip the waves got higher and it became heavy to stay on course and not to lose course. After a little 3 hours the beach of Santa Pola came into view. One by one the athletes came out of the sea. The organization was perfect, you could massage your languages, there was plenty to eat and drink. As a souvenir there was a nice polo. Wonderful event, maybe participate again next year ......

THE OLD BILL?

Residents of El Oasis were not happy at the start of July when they received SUMA bills through the post believing the bills had been paid and finalised in 2016. Confusion seems to reig with some residents saying the payments are due and it is because the town hall is eighteen months behind with sending out the demands thus causing the confusion. While others stated that they were determined to fight the demands which can cost into several thousands of euros.

Funny stuff...

A man is hitch-hiking up the dual carriageway when a lorry stops for him. As he climbs into the cab he notices a monkey sitting on the dashboard. After chatting for a few miles, he asks the driver what the monkey is for. The driver says, “I’ll show you.” He hits the monkey very hard with the back of his hand, sending the poor creature rolling across the cab. The monkey picks itself up and disappears between the drivers legs, unzips his jeans, pulls out the driver’s willy and proceeds to give him a blow job. Afterwards the monkey gets some tissues, cleans the driver up, zips it all back and jumps back up on the dashboard. “See that?” said the trucker. “Yeah, bloody amazing!” says the man. Then trucker asks the him, “Do you want to give it a try?” The man says, “OK, but don’t hit me as hard as you hit that monkey.....”

EXPAT FRAUDSTER ON THE LOOSE

Police officers will not perform extraordinary services and complain that interns perform functions that are not their job

Gran Alacant resident Graham Basset has done it again, gone and produced a ‘super onion’ weighing in at 11.031 Lbs or just over 5 Kilos! Using specialist soil, and a lot of patience, the green-fingered master grows many different types of super-sized vegetable in pots on his roof terrace. All we need now is a pan big enough to make onion rings!

Last month the port of alicante welcomed a visit from a replica of christopher columbus’s ship, the nao santa maria, the flagship of the fleet that discovered america in 1492. The Nao Victoria Foundation, a non-profit organisation, has an objective to assemble historical events. The replica flagship arrived in Alicante on the 4th of July and was moored until Sunday 8th, when set sail again.

BRITISH TEENAGER MIRACULOUSLY SURVIVES FALL FROM FIFTH FLOOR IN SPAIN WHILE CELEBRATING ENGLAND WORLD CUP WIN A BRITISH teen has miraculously survived after plummeting 75ft from a Mallorca balcony. The 18-year-old fell from the fifth floor while celebrating England’s World Cup victory over Colombia. The holidaymaker was luckily found outside the four-star Flamboyan Caribe Hotel by a kebab shop worker, who immediately called an ambulance. He has been taken to Son Espases Hospital after being found in a ‘serious but conscious’ condition.

The unnamed England fan is thought to have fallen out from a corridor window at around 1.30am, just a few hours after his team made it through to the last eight of the World Cup. Around a thousand Brits descended on Magaluf’s party strip to watch the tense penalty shoot out. According to reports, the lad’s girlfriend and friends followed him to the hospital in taxis. Guardia Civil have begun an investigation to rule out foul play, which is routine.

Police unions SEP and CSIF have complaines that the functions being performed by the Interim Agents hired this summer, Agents who in principle came to perform only beach services, and who are now providing regular services outside of their remit. Which, according to the unions, is clearly not complying with the provisions of the Law Coordination of Local Police of the Valencian Community. Many of the Agents during the summer period sacrifice their free time because they understand that the larger population needs a greater police presence. However, this summer they will not perform extraordinary services, stating they have also been deceived in the sense that they were told one thing but are doing another. They need to be organised better, they say, to be able to organise family life and that calling Agents with just several hours notice to carry out services is not complying with the provisions of the agreement. They also add that “if we add to all our demands that the authorities have not been able to resolve or improve the circumstances for 90% of the year, our population does not have a SAMU Fire or Ambulance Service with a doctor, leaving the officials we represent having to intervene in fires or sanitary interventions of extreme gravity without the proper means “. For these and many other reasons that have been reported the police feel cheated and ignored, “without proper clothing, without vests, without resources, without vehicles.” They went on to add that officers would in any case always watch out for the security of the citizens and visitors of Santa Pola, as it has done since it was established.

A SERIAL expat fraudster exposed many times by local media in Southern Spain is incredibly STILL making thousands from scamming holidaymakers to Spain. Paula Neale is apparently conning scores of tourists a month from rental scams, despite being arrested in May, in an ongoing police investigation. Local media revealed the British mother-of-two is continuing to snare victims while out on bail, after her arrest in Burgos. And warned that she could move to other parts of Spain. As well as new victims coming forward, an old friend of Neale, 44, in the UK, unwittingly allowed her to use her email and her PayPal account. In an extraordinary three month period up to early June the friend claims she raked in a staggering €18,000 from apparent holiday rental deposits. In a damning breakdown of the account, which local media has a copy of, there is a total of at least €17,830 taken via PayPal. One of the victims Alex McIntyre, who is listed on the payments, said he was scheduled to stay at a villa arranged by Neale – who uses the aliases Paula Kari and Gabriel Goodman – this week in Mijas. McIntyre paid €700 for the villa near Mijas, where his aunt lives. But when he showed his aunt the pictures of the villa, she couldn’t recognise the area and when she went to look for it couldn’t find it. McIntyre tried to contact Paula – who was using her Gabriel alias – but she ignored him until he tried to cancel his PayPal payment. “She got very angry and demanded I close the PayPal dispute,” McIntyre told local media, “she blocked me on social media after telling me I would be getting no refund.” This week her long time friend in the UK, who asked to remain anonymous, told us: “She has to be stopped. It is completely wrong what she is doing.” The mother-of-two, based in the UK, said she had been contacted at the beginning of the year by Neale, who she had met five years ago when she lived in Kent. “She said she had had all her belongings stolen and had no money to pay for petrol or feed her children.

FACTS OF LIFE

By Violet King

Have you ever considered that our unhappiness today can be a direct result of not realising certain facts about life? Just Consider this: 1 The Past: Though it cannot be changed it should constantly be recognised as having been your life’s greatest teacher. Look back if you must, not to regret or to try to re-live your life, but to learn from the person you were back then and the mistakes you made, then LET GO and MOVE ON! For every question answered two more are asked, from creation to evolution, Christianity to Buddhism, every sort of inquiry made by the intelligent and the not so including, is Trump’s hair real or a piece? Does he have a brain under it or is it a cosy keeping his tea warm? One question is still unanswered, for decades now, women of all ages come up against this same old problem on their holidays. Do they free themselves from the white marks of tyranny and go strapless or topless. After spending most of their adult lives in push-ups, pull-ins, chicken fillets, or heaven forbid, corsets, do they break free and show the world their asset? Or stay covered for the rest of their lives hiding their pride and joy from the world…? There is no easy answer to this, but one thing for sure is, it applies to both sexes these days. After quiet observation on the beach, I have concluded that many men would benefit from a holdup or a pull in strap, some have bigger boobs than most women do and certainly not as attractive. Yes, I can appreciate the female form even though I am female, but no girls, do not ask me on a date will you. Back to the question of to be or not to be topless…? I have decided this, apparently, is a personal choice thing, but a good rule of thumb for women is: Strip off your top and stand in front of a mirror, if you like what you see then go for it if you don’t but you want revenge on the male population, then go for it. If you don’t mind admiring looks from either sex, and there is no woman alive that does not wish to be overwhelmed with admiration, if they tell you otherwise they are telling porkies, so in the end, it is up to you. If you are a man… strip off and look at yourself in the mirror, but remove the beer goggles first. Patting that bulge and squeezing them moobs (man boobs) together, no matter how often you tell yourself it’s your six-pack and pecs, no, sorry boys, my advice is to go to your wife’s wardrobe, take out the top she has thrown to the back of the cupboard or on the floor and try it on. Do female kind a favour and hide some of those red lumps and bumps, stand tall and proud, remove those black socks with your trainers and please, please, please stop rolling your shorts up and tucking them in like adult nappies, this is not a good look, just buy shorter shorts PLEASE or get proper trunks. Having watched people from 18 months old to 80+ years and of both sexes and all shapes and sizes, enjoying the freedom of fresh air and sunlight on their assets my conclusion again is It’s up to you is that it’s up to each person individually. And for the cynical amongst you, no I am no pin-up model with an axe to grind.

“Plant Thief Alert”

Sue Bradfield stopped an attempred robbery last month. “A man, about 5’10” aged in his 60’s, parked his white Peugeot reg 0066 JJH, at the back of our house. As I was walking down the street I noticed he was walking backwards and forwards around our home, I went inside, with my dog and was just taking her lead off, when the man came back to the front of the house

3 The Future: This depends on how well you have learned the lessons of the past and how you have handled each and every day. All anger comes from pain and we can be angry because of the pain of our lives not being the way we want them to be, but by learning from the past the future can be very bright ahead. Sometimes we fail to see that we are responsible for our present happiness just by having the right attitude towards the past, and by using today to result in a better future. YOU are in control – you can make real choices now, you do not have to “go with the flow”. Take encouragement from knowing that in no situation can anyone control your mind, or your response to any situation, and results are what actions were, and where your thoughts started! Read that again and think about it! You are in control of the way you think, and positive thoughts can result in positive actions if you will only let go of the past and move on mentally to where you would like to be.

If this all seems strange to you, try thinking of all the famous people you have heard of who have had deprived beginnings, some having suffered major emotional, physical or sexual abuse. Carrying their past round with them and allowing it to affect their present, or determine their future is something they all decided not to do, and by a change of attitude today you can learn to do it too. Perhaps we can realise, like them, that all negative experiences teach us something, and learn to ask ourselves… what? Empower your life today by just thinking differently about your circumstances and yourself as a person and look forward to a future you are deliberately planning. Let’s try to learn that lesson today and benefit for the rest of our lives! Till next time!

and proceeded to put one of our plants and pot in a carrier bag, when I banged on the front door and told him to put it back, he was very apologetic and put the plant back and rushed off. I followed him around to the back, where he jumped into his car and drove off.... I am furious, how dare he think he has the right to drive around the Urb stealing other people’s plants and pots!!!”

2 Today: This can be the result of the past and who you are at this moment in time, but today is the springboard of the rest of your life. Take control, dream your dreams, and watch reality take over. Realise that you deserve the best. Make each day important, and realise that only today need affect your future. Your past will lose effect by making today work for you. Use every day to achieve something, however small.

SPORTS REPORT

By Malcolm Palmer

GETTING TO THE SEMIS By the time you read this, the outcome of the France v Belgium, and England v Croatia semi-finals will be known, and the grand final will be the focus of everyone’s attention. Will England get to taste again the glory of 1966, or will the rapid French, the powerful Belgians, or the clever Croatians make the grade? Whatever the result, one thing shines out clearly: this World Cup has been a real triumph for Russia, whose honest side scrapped its way to the quarter-finals, but whose fans, organisers, and all involved have made this a memorable tournament. The stadia used were nothing short of magnificent, and security, whilst it may well have been heavy-handed, has worked perfectly, with no sign of the hooliganism we saw at the last European Championships in France. Now to the football: The best sides, by a country mile, have been Belgium and France. A quirk of the draw has seen what should perhaps have been the final pitch

them against each-other in the semis, but if Mbappe turns on once more that blistering pace for France, and Lukaku powers through for Belgium, with supporting cast of Pogba and Griezmann on the one hand and Hazard and De Bruyne on the other, we could be in for a classic. English fans will hope their side can neutralize the threat of Luka Modric and newcomer Rebic when they meet Croatia, but even

if they achieve this, I can’t see them overcoming their neighbours from across the Channel without a big dose of good fortune. Finally a word for the refereeing. It’s been pretty good! Spain were unjustly denied a penalty which may well have taken them through, but this could have been rectified by VAR, which is still in its infancy. Twice I have seen matches refereed by the Senegal official, and I thought him the very best. Player of the tournament so far: Luka Modric.

WIMBLEDON WELCOMES THE BEST

An initial glance down the Wimbledon men’s draw reveals two things: (1) for the first time in 12 months, all of the game’s big names—Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Juan Martin Del Potro—are present and accounted for; and (2) not all of them seem ready to threaten for the title just yet. Here’s a look ahead at how brightly those stars might shine, and who might come along to dim them. FIRST QUARTER In his two Wimbledon tune-up events, in

Stuttgart and Halle, Federer reached two finals and won one of them. Yet he spent much of his time in Halle struggling to find a feel for the ball. Will that matter at Wimbledon? I’m going to say no, primarily because of the scoring format, and the psychological effect it has on Federer and his opponents. Going from best-of-three to best-of-five helps Federer settle in, and makes it harder for his opponents to believe they can maintain a winning level of play against him for three entire sets. That said, there are players in Federer’s draw who could threaten him. His first opponent, Dusan Lajovic, is a talented ball-striker who took Alexander Zverev to a fifth set at the French Open. One of his potential third-round opponents, Ivo Karlovic, is never an easy out. His fourthround opponent might be Borna Coric, who beat him last week in Halle. One of his possible quarterfinal opponents, Kevin Anderson, has pushed Djokovic to the limit at Wimbledon in the past. Another, Sam Querrey, has beaten both Djokovic and Murray there. A third, Richard Gasquet, just win a grass-court event. Dark Horses: Coric, Querrey, Gasquet and Gilles Muller, a grass-court specialist .
