I am very excited to introduce Fathom Expeditions’ grand journey to the island of South Georgia sailing from the Falkland Islands.
Cru
In preparation for this rare voyage, we have drawn on over a decade of experience cruising South Georgia’s waters and living on her shores. She is our favourite Antarctic island without a doubt and the wildlife stands out as the biggest and best we have seen after 60+ Antarctic trips.

Our special itinerary visits during the massive Spring wildlife migration and particularly, the rarely seen Elephant Seal arrivals and battles. Holding half the world’s South Elephant Seals, South Georgia’s beaches come alive in the spring with barking, splashing and fighting bulls that can reach 22 feet in length and weigh 11,000 pounds! This nature spectacle along with magnificent colonies of king penguins and hillsides dotted with wandering albatross nests makes this cruise a photographer and wildlife enthusiasts dream. In addition, the spirit of history comes alive as we retrace routes from my favourite explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton. Very few have had the chance to hike on his route across the island and we plan this and a rewarding visit to his gravesite.

Joining us onboard are dear friends, authors and former residents of South Georgia, Tim and Pauline Carr. They passed 14 years on the isle building up the incredible Natural History Museum. My hand-picked team and I look forward to showcasing the very best the sub-Antarctic has to offer. Welcome aboard!
“For over twenty years, I have taken trips throughout the world on all 7 continents with many different first-class adventure travel companies. Fathom Expeditions’ Spirit of Shackleton expedition was the best planned and executed, and had the best leaders and lecturers of all my trips. In short, Fathom is the ‘gold standard’.” - Laura Flanders Massachusetts, USA “Our adventure with Fathom was extraordinary from beginning to end! Every meal was delicious; every lecture was interesting; every landing was more special than the last! The scenery took our breath away and every staff member made us feel like family. This was a dream-come-true journey and we are so glad we did it with Fathom Expeditions!” - John and Mindy Spicer Washington, USA

Tim and Pauline Carr are true South Georgia locals having lived, worked and played year round on the island for fourteen years as curators of the museum and church. Their island and wildlife knowledge is unparallelled and they will guide on shore and lecture throughout our journey. We are looking forward to sailing with them once again. Dr. Robert Williams is an Antarctic marine mammal scientist. When not managing wildlife studies off the British Columbia coast, Rob can be found championing the cause of whales at the International Whaling Commission meetings. He is co-author of an important paper on Southen Ocean whale populations and he heads our science/conservation projects on this trip. Our travel partners can easily assist with international flights, transfers and exceptional hotels along the way. Travel insurance is a very important part of any expedition cruise and Fathom Expeditions has policy information and options for both Canadian and U.S. citizens.
An Antarctic favourite, South Georgia lies isolated at the bottom of the world surrounded by the Southern Ocean. It is a remote, mountainous island of profound beauty. It is dominated by wilderness with no roads, pollution or native inhabitants. South Georgia lies outside Antarctica’s winter pack ice and is the only land for hundreds of miles. For this reason, it is considered a polar oasis for huge numbers of Antarctic wildlife. A visit here is a peek into Mother Nature’s cradle. Our crafted itinerary visits astounding bays and fjords where the sea and beaches come alive with seals and boisterous penguins. The grand scale of spring wildlife stretches our standard definitions of the world. South Georgia is home to vast colonies of seabirds, seals, marine mammals and reindeer backdropped by icebergs and glaciers!
On the trip, we are immersed in a world of Antarctic explorers. We retrace routes and landings from Shackleton’s Endurance epic and we pay a respectful visit to local science stations and field huts that dot the island. Our expedition sets sail in Antarctic Spring when we can expect to see large, active colonies of king, macaroni, rockhopper and gentoo penguins, reindeer, battling masses of elephant and fur seals, amazing wandering albatrosses on the nest and much more. It is the perfect time to experience the “total South Georgia” including the rare elephant seal battles.
Insurance and emergency evacuation policies are detailed in the Terms and Conditions page of this brochure (Page 12). Please take the time to read these terms in full so you understand the terms that apply to your travel arrangements.
Our ice-rated ship, MV Ushuaia, has a long list of firsts around these islands. She carries guests in full comfort and her experienced and capable crew perfectly complement the Fathom team. With superb lecture, dining and observation facilities to accompany her ice-hull and powerful bow thruster, she is perfectly suited for polar cruising. 3

SOUTH GEORGIA AND THE FALKLAND ISLANDS • October 03-17th, 2009 • - SAMPLE ITINERARY continued... Highlights • Sailing our ship into the narrow Drygalskiy Fjord. • Relaxing with 200,000 pairs of 3-foot-high king penguins • Cruising in a Zodiac past a fantasia of icebergs • Looking into the blue heart of a glacial crevasse.
Day 8 ~ Greene Peninsula, Nordensjold Glacier and Grytviken. Today’s activities include the South Georgia museum and whaling station, a visit to Shackleton’s gravesite and/or a walk/ski in the isolate peaks behind. We plan a visit King Edward Point, where South Georgia science is based and also to the Nordenskjold Glacier to cruise, walk and hike with reindeer and other wildlife before the BBQ celebration. Day 9 ~ St Andrew’s Bay and Gold Harbour During a month-long survey of South Georgia in 1999, Fathom guides explored a number of astounding wildlife colonies including the unforgettable St. Andrew’s Bay. King penguins, giant petrels, elephant seals, fur seals, sheathbills and busy pelagic life stretch as far as the eye can see. Reindeer are common on the surrounding slopes. This special place is truly astounding for visitors. The afternoon visit to Gold Harbour makes for the perfect complement with a glacier background! Day 10 ~ Elsehul Harbour and Right Whale Bay Grey-headed, black-browed albatrosses and colonies of macaroni penguins inhabit northern South Georgia. Today, we hike tussockcovered foothills for ten-mile views. We amble the beaches with local wildlife, camera in hand. Highlights include vast colonies of breeding and battling elephant seal bulls. Our journey coincides with the spring migration and wildlife is extremely active. At Right Whale Bay, South Georgia’s scenery backdrops light-mantled sooty albatross on the nest. Day 11 ~ Antarctic Ocean Today, we sail westward towards the Falkland Islands. Our lecture series includes the history and conflicts of this remote region along

with the special culture and people that reside here. Day 12 ~ Scotia Arc After a brilliant morning learning about the flora and fauna of the Falklands, we enjoy wildlife watches for fin, right and humpback whales. Seabirds abound around the ship and dolphins often appear. Day 13 ~ Sea Lion Island, Bleeker We approach the dramatic outer islands of the Falklands amid reeling flocks of black-browed albatrosses. At Sea Lion and Bleeker Islands we hope to view killer whales, sea lion colonies and magellanic and rockhopper penguins and much more. We can visit the tiny settlement to enjoy tea with the owners and to learn about isolated life on a Falkland Isle.
• Venturing inland for amazing views of the island’s interior. • Wandering beaches brimming with seals and penguins • Sending postcards to loved ones from the end of the earth. • Watching curious fur seals swim under your Zodiac.
Day 14 ~ Steeple Jason, New Island, Westpoint Under special permit, we hope to visit the world’s largest blackbrowed albatross colony at Steeple Jason. Over the past ten years, we have led Antarctic and sub-Antarctic voyages on a dozen expedition ships covering the full range of sizes and styles. The M/V Ushuaia is a true Polar “local” and one of our favourites by far. We are thrilled to be operating this custom trip on such an accomplished passenger vessel with such an experienced Captain and crew.
All prices are in US dollars per person based on double occupancy.
Affectionately called “The Ushuaia”, She has achieved numerous expedition firsts and her ice-rating allows us to venture safely into areas with fast ice and icebergs. Originally built for the United States agency NOAA (National Oceanographic & Atmospheric Administration), The Ushuaia has been refurbished to accommodate a maximum of 80 passengers in 40 comfortable twin cabins and suites. An ice-strengthened polar ship, Ushuaia is very well appointed and provides loads of deck space and an open bridge policy. The fleet of Zodiac landing boats ensures superb wildlife viewing opportunities on otherwise inaccessible coastlines.
