- SVALBARD - 80 degrees North Dear friends and explorers, Images of Spitsbergen and Svalbard are fresh in my mind after another successful high Arctic season. Once again, we had curious polar bears beside our small ship and Zodiacs. The walrusses, or tooth walkers, never ceased to entertain us and the history of Arctic explorers seemed to come alive as we ventured to the northernmost islands and fjords in Europe. Our expeditions achieved numerous firsts with our guests while enjoying thrilling wildlife, ice and scenery in the pack ice and on these remote shores. Fathom Expeditions recognizes that a high Arctic cruise should be a life-changing experience. Using decades of polar experience, we plan comprehensive itineraries covering the very best landings and routes. The goal is to ensure the richest possible journey coupled with relaxation, adventure, learning and comfort onboard. To circumnavigate the polar archipelago of Svalbard means we will be immersed in 400 years of history culminating in Amundson’s successful North Pole flight. As we walk in these big footsteps, polar bears, walrusses and an endless parade of seabirds will acccompany us into stunning fjords and past enormous glaciers and Spitsbergen’s rugges peaks. The quiet nature that exists above 80 degrees North give this expedition a rare and special quality that can’t be found with on large ships or by land. I look forward to welcoming you onboard for this grand journey into the wild heart of the high Arctic.

High Arctic Spitsbergen is a spectacular, isolated archipelago of sheer cliffs, tumbling glaciers and long, finger fjords. Located 500 miles from the North Pole, Spitsbergen is the perfect home to over 3000 polar bears. It has lured explorers into its enticing waters for centuries and, in 2009, our ship, Polar Pioneer, will again carry us, in complete comfort, through this glaciated world. Our goal will be to locate polar bears, walrusses, seals and whales in their natural environments. We will spend unhurried time hiking and walking ashore, cruising through the pack ice and reliving polar history and exploration.

bears and their prey - bearded and ringed seals. On daily shore landings, we visit historic huts, hike to towering glaciers and observe rare wildlife. King eiders and puffins will be our companions on this special cruise to the top of the world. Our ice-rated ship, M/V Ushuaia, has a long list of firsts around these islands. She carries just 80 guests in full comfort and her experienced and capable crew perfectly complement the Fathom team. With superb lecture, dining and observation facilities to accompany her ice-hull and powerful bow thruster, she is perfectly suited for polar cruising.

Our travels take place in the height of the summer when wildflowers are in full bloom and the sun shines 24 hours a day. Fast ice remains in the fjords bringing together 3

CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF HIGH ARCTIC SPITSBERGEN JULY 3-13, 2009

Trip Snapshots • Witnessing polar bears in their natural environment. • Hiking isolated islands at the very top of the world. • Discovering the abandoned stations and legacy of science around Spitsbergen. • Navigating through the Arctic pack ice. • Landing on the Northernmost islands in Europe. • Sharing stories over wonderful wines, fruits and cheeses.

Walk, hike, explore and photograph the wildlife and wonders of high Arctic Spitsbergen. Circumnavigate the Polar oasis of Svalbard. Day 1: Oslo - Longyearbyen Meet at the airport hotel in Oslo for a one night stay prior to flying into the outpost town of Longyearbyen (78°13′N 15°33′E) under the midnight sun. Transfer to the Svalbard Museum overlooking Icefjorden (Ice Fjord). Flights not included. Days 2-11: Circumnavigation of Svalbard. We plan to complete two landings per day as we sail around Svalbard. Sample landing are featured below. Smeerenburg Glacier and Norske Island On the Northerwest corner of Spitsbergen, we cruise along stunning glaciers, hike untrodden peaks for amazing views and walk the lonely beaches encountering auks, eider ducks and whaling station remains. Here, we often see Polar Bears. Seven Islands Today we attempt to reach the Northern-most island in Europe. The Seven Islands include astounding bird colo-

nies, terrific walks, towering cliffs and inspiring history. To the North lies the massive blanket of winter ice which stretches to the North Pole. Here, our odds of finding polar bears are great and Polar Pioneer and our Zodiacs cruise the floes with ease. If conditions allow, we venture out for a walk on the pack ice or a short Polar swim. Hinlopen Strait Hinlopen’s waters are especially nutritious and harbour large concentrations of seabirds noted when we visit a colony of 600,000 guillemots. Our ship is skillful at navigating the towering icebergs and the shifting pack ice for landings. Landing to walk and hike take place on Spitsbergen and Nordauslandet Barentsburg An amazing cultural visit to explore this communist-era Russian coal mine. View the mine, learn of the history of this outpost and meet the local Russians. Danes Island and Ny Alesund Two of the most courageous attempts to reach the North Pole started from these islands. We explore the sites, which are littered with remnants from the heroic era. As our 5

• Photographing curious bears when they approach our ship. • Watching glaciers calve huge blocks into the bays. • Enjoying an outdoor BBQ surrounded by pristine beauty. • Observing walrusses as they battle back for dominance.

Trip Snapshots • Sailing into beautiful isolated fjords in search of polar bears. • Watching walrus feeding and resting on land and on the ice. • Cruising in a Zodiac past a fantasia of icebergs. • Looking into the blue heart of a glacial crevasse. • Photographing enormous colonies of rare seabirds. Nordaustlandet We cruise along the world’s third largest icecap stretching down to the sea where it forms a long glacier front intersected by hundreds of melt-waterfalls. Fast ice often forms a shelf along the sea for bearded seals, walrusses, ringed seals and bears. The waterfalls are amazing and whales are often seen along the fast ice edge.

Day 11: Longyearbyen - Oslo Transfer to the airport for our flights back to Oslo, Norway and home. Important Note: Itineraries are subject to change due to ice, wind or weather conditions. This is a sample itinerary.

Zordragonfjorden Deep inside these fjords, bearded seals lounge on ice flows and minke whales can be spotted cruising the surface. We sail directly into the fast ice and “freeze” the ship for an Arctic BBQ. Later, walks and hikes are offered to an enormous glacier and to dramatic bird cliffs. We keep a constant lookout for resident polar bears.

• Wandering beaches brimming with history and artefacts. • Sending postcards to loved ones from the end of the earth. • Watching curious bearded seals swim under your Zodiac.

Arctic Polar Convergence Fin, Humpback and Minke whales are often seen feeding off Nordaustlandet, where Storöya Isolated Storöya lies above 80 degrees North and, when ice conditions allow, is a superb place too see polar bears stalking walrus pups and raiding bird colonies. During outings, we can search for recently discovered “sea monster” fossils. Borebukta At Borebukta, we hope to encounter Arctic fox, reindeer and walruses during our walks and hikes. Later, we toast our successes with a grand Captain’s Dinner.

• Venturing inland for amazing views of Spitsbergen’s scenery.

PLEASE NOTE: The above is a sample itinerary. Our cruise is an expedition voyage that is subject to wind, weather and ice. The itinerary may change without notice. 7

THE 45-PASSENGER SHIP - POLAR PIONEER

VOYAGE PRICES

Over the past ten years, we have led Arctic and Antarctic voyages on a dozen expedition ships covering the full range of sizes and styles. The Polar Pioneer is a true Spitsbergen “local” and one of our favourites by far. We are thrilled to be operating this custom trip on such an accomplished passenger vessel with such an experienced Captain and crew. Affectionately called “The Shuley”, She has achieved numerous expedition firsts and her ice-rating allows us to venture safely into areas with fast ice and icebergs. The Polar Pioneer was built at the famed shipyards of Finland in 1986 for scientific expeditions. In 1994, She started her career as a passenger ship and has been cruising Arctic and Antarctic waters every summer since. She carries a maximum of 45 passengers in outside-facing twin and superior cabins. An ice-strengthened polar ship, Polar Pioneer is very well appointed and provides loads of deck space and an open bridge policy. The fleet of Zodiac landing boats ensures superb wildlife viewing opportunities on otherwise inaccessible coastlines. We led our first trip onboard her in 1996 and she is one of our favourite ice-ships. All cabins include a desk and ample storage space. Public areas feature two dining rooms (one sitting), an observation lounge and bar, a lecture room with modern multimedia equipment, a changing room and a small infirmary. The expert captain, officers and crew are highly experienced around Spitsbergen. They have a great love and passion for this natural world. Fathom’s hand-picked team of international leaders and lecturers are all veteran Arctic experts, enthusiastic, helpful and dedicated. Our guest chefs prepare excellent cuisine daily including many local specialties. The “Polar Bar” is well-stocked with carefully selected wines and spirits for celebrations at the end of the day.
