RAPH EXPO successfully secured print’s territory as a dynamic, flexible, and personalized medium moving in step with the online and social media it is asked to complement. Digital printing was once again the star of the show. The allimportant difference this year being the breakthrough of high-end, half-size format machines and a growing contingent of high-speed, webfed inkjet devices providing more options than ever for effective, targeted print marketing. Workflow software and SaaS solutions vendors from across the show floor demonstrated how PSPs can stay on multimedia’s leading edge. Finishing solutions vendors showed that there is an advanced solution for every new shortrun, personalized, and integrated print product marketers can imagine. Attendance reflected strong interest

GRAPH EXPO 2012 MUST SEE ’EMS Winners Announced New “Best of Category” awards and inaugural “Legacy Award” unveiled at EXECUTIVE OUTLOOK Conference

G

RAPH EXPO 2012 attendees, for the first time, were able to plan their MUST SEE ’EMS booth visits in advance of the show. From this year’s show, a total of 108 products were nominated for evaluation by the MUST SEE ’EMS Selection Committee. While all nominated products had interesting characteristics that merited consideration, only a handful achieved “award winner” status.

Legacy Award Winner The Prinergy prepress workflow system, developed by Creo and Heidelberg and now a product of Eastman Kodak, was selected to receive the first-ever MUST SEE ’EMS “Legacy Award” recognizing a technology that has had a lasting impact on the entire graphic communications industry. It was selected from among all of the winners since the inaugural MUST SEE ’EMS recognition program in 1999. “While each of the candidates reviewed by the MUST SEE ’EMS Selection Committee has made a worthwhile contribution to our industry, it was

Selection Process Entries in the MUST SEE ’EMS competition were submitted by the graphic communications industry’s top vendors and placed for judging in 11 individual categories. Winners were selected by a panel of industry experts, journalists, and consultants who based their choices on the impact they believe these technologies will have on the industry. Winners were picked in each category with the first-time “Best of Category” selections announced at the conclusion of the EXECUTIVE OUTLOOK Conference, prior to the opening of GRAPH EXPO.

the consensus of the judges to present the 2012 Legacy Award to the Prinergy prepress workflow system,” said GASC President Ralph Nappi. According to MUST SEE ’EMS program coordinator Hal Hinderliter, “Prinergy was not the first PDF-based workflow, but it stood out as the first product to bring the power of in-RIP PDF editing to a large scale audience. Virtually all prepress workflow systems are based on PDF, a concept that Prinergy helped legitimize.” One judge commented, “Nothing else on the list went on to become as widely adopted and used as Prinergy. It’s a bedrock technology that continues to evolve as it drives productivity throughout the industry.” Another said, “This is still the most widely integrated and automated product on the market ... it’s a fixture in the industry.” Other comments described it as “robust” and “a complete success.” Clearly, the Selection Committee felt that in consideration with other progressive MUST SEE ’EMS winners since 1999, Prinergy was a standout with

Trends, Contract Packaging, and Niche Markets Drive Package Printing Demand

C

PP EXPO’s decision to co-locate with PRINT 13 is nothing short of answering demand. Recent trends that demonstrate commercial printers’ migration into the converting/package printing arena made the co-location of these two events a positive move for both exhibitors and attendees in each show. Increased SKUs, growth by local brands and smaller private labels in select verticals such as food, personal care, and nutraceuticals have created a niche market for commercial printers migrating into the converting process. These same trends have forced traditional converters to look for fast changeover capabilities that can be answered with digital technologies.

4 October 10, 2012 • GRAPH EXPO

According to Leo Nadolske, President, CPP EXPO, “Our initial goal for this year’s show was to move to the fall and stay in Chicago, so the concept of this strategic alliance—CPP EXPO 2013 with PRINT 13—was the ideal solution! Beyond moving away from a very crowded spring timeframe, it provides the ideal scenario for our package printing and converting event since attendees will be able to see and explore all the very latest in digital, prepress, and design technologies and products that are so vital to their customers’ brand marketing strategies.” Attendees of either CPP 2013 or PRINT 13 will gain access to the com-

bined offerings of both events with a full entry pass to all of the exhibits, at McCormick Place. Additionally, all attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an expanded array of top-notch educational programming and to take advantage of a multitude of industry peer networking provided by the colocation of the two events. “Based on what we have learned from attendees seeking package printing and converting equipment, and hearing the support of the manufacturers, we’re convinced that the timing is right to meet the

needs of the growing package printing and converting industry by partnering CPP EXPO 2013 with PRINT 13,” states Ralph Nappi, GASC President. Soren Larsen, Vice President of Sheetfed Sales, reported that KBA’s sheetfed numbers are its best in years, up some 17% for 2012. “Forty percent of all orders in 2012 are from accounts that never had a KBA press before,” he pointed out. In the large-format space, Larsen said that KBA has 19 81" presses installed in North America, including one in Canada. Also, Great Western Newspaper in Canada added a COLORA model. At KBA’s Monday press conference, CEO Claus Bolza-Schünemann noted that while drupa 2012 attendance was down some 20% last May, GRAPH EXPO projections look for an increase over 2011 through the end of the day Wednesday.

erman Sacristan, Kodak’s Return on Marketing Developer has authored “The Digital and Direct Marketing Goose” and is signing copies during GRAPH EXPO 2012. The book is a guide for commercial printers that asks the questions, “What do your customers think when they look at you? They only think why you? What can you do for me than others can’t?”

According to Sacristan, the customer of the commercial printer only cares about one thing, “selling more of what they sell” and how you are going to help them achieve that goal. “The Digital & Direct Marketing Goose” includes 16 tips and real examples that will help the customers of commercial printers increase their chances of laying more golden eggs. The book describes a proven methodical process and the ingredients that can help deliver more and better sales. This book is highly recommended to any commercial printer that wants to grow his business. After reading the book they will better understand customers from a business, marketing, and sales perspective. That will help increase the value of their services as well as better differentiate themselves from the competition.

Impressions Worldwide Helps Middle Georgia Printing Cooperative Build New Press & Mailroom Facility

i

mPRESSions Worldwide (Booth 2662) announced the sale of an 18 unit Urbanite press to Middle Georgia Printing Cooperative LLC (MGPC). The press will anchor a new production facility being built in Macon, GA, to support the owners’ need to find a better production platform for their newspapers. The group prints on a double wide KBA flexo press today and will convert to the Urbanite to gain flexibility and cost control. The new Urbanite press will provide MGPC with four webs of process color and two webs of black. The press is capable of producing one single broadsheet product of up to 48 pages with 32 in color. The press can also be split to run two products simultaneously. US Automation will supply new ultrasonic web detection and ink levelers to enhance the productivity. The new plant is scheduled to be up and running by January 1, 2013. A. Mark Smith, President of MGPC stated, “Middle Georgia Printing Co-Op LLC looks forward to our new printing facility in

Macon. Tom Reardon and the team at imPRESSions Worldwide have done an excellent job finding the best equipment available for our new plant. The new facility will enable us to grow even more and handle most any newspaper printing situation.” Josh Lurie, Vice President at MGPC added, “Our company is made up of weekly newspaper publishers who were left without a place to print due to consolidation of metro dailies in Georgia. There isn’t another press of this size within two hours, and several other weekly newspapers have joined us to triple our volume in just two years. Building our own plant is giving us the opportunity to take our destiny into our own hands as we still see a bright future in print. “Most of our newspapers have stayed strong despite the recession and continued to grow with a focus on local news and service to advertisers while bigger papers pull back. This new facility is going to give us even more flexibility and room to grow, and we can’t wait to be up and running.”

Mohawk Wins the Paper Chase at GRAPH EXPO

M

ohawk (Booth 240) has made a lot of changes since last GRAPH EXPO. In the company’s annual press conference, Chris Harrold, Vice President of Market Development, Emerging Technologies, began by explaining the streamlining that occurred earlier this year. The first item of business is that the company name has been changed from Mohawk Fine Papers to simply Mohawk. The second big change is the streamlining of the product portfolio. The company’s own literature explains it best: “The new Mohawk in brief: A condensed and streamlined product offering that organizes our best-selling colors, textures, and surface qualities into 15 smart product lines. Simplified and relevant for all the things you want to make and all the ways you want to print.” Pointing out the company’s focus on digital substrates, Harrold spoke about its recent acquisition of small company called Bravo. “It may have been a small acquisition in dollars, but it was strategically very big,” he stated. The company creates coatings for synthetic substrates, which allowed Mohawk to bring that capability in-house rather than having to outsource the process to industry partners. One result of that acquisition was the launch of the Dimensional Portfolio. “With this capability, any digital printer

In-Plant Printers Learn about Connecting Customers with Print

nnovative in-plant managers are discovering new avenues to connect with customers and build their businesses. During Monday’s luncheon presentation “Connecting Customers with Print”, attendees heard from top suppliers and in-plant managers. The free session was sponsored by IPMA and In-Plant Graphics.

Moderator Barb Pellow, Group Director of InfoTrends (above), launched the session with a nuts and bolts explanation of new tools available to help print managers forge a stronger bond with their customers by delivering better response to marketing and outreach campaigns.

Building your business The first segment was hosted by Gene McKenzie, Director of Business Development, Rochester Software Associates (Booth 237), and his customer Andrea Eshoo, Assistant Director at Diversified. Eshoo outlined how RSA’s WebCRD Webto-print solution, featuring Dynamics VDP, helped Diversified create a catalog of customizable marketing campaigns and educational materials on its self-serve platform.

Connecting with QR codes The second segment was comprised of a panel that included Chris Harrold, Vice President of Market Development, Emerging Technologies, reviewed Mohawk’s new products. can become a packaging printer,” Harrold said. The Dimensional Portfolio is a line of pre-scored and perforated products designed to run on digital presses, HP Indigo presses, and dry toner equipment. The company has also added Chromolux and Chromolux Digital high-gloss papers and boards to its line of creative papers. The high-gloss, cast-coated product line consists of a range of calipers, colors, and metallic effects for both traditional and digital presses. Mohawk also offers a sample deck that fans out to make it easy to see each of the papers in all their variations. Harrold also noted that envelopes continue to be a huge focus for Mohawk. Passing around samples, he demonstrated that the company is experimenting with unusual window shapes and placements, all while remaining within USPS guidelines.

Jason Simmons, Vice President of Sales, Midwest Operations, for Xerox (Booth 1200); Howie Fenton, NAPL Senior Consultant (Booth 4023), and John Meyer, Manager of the in-plant print and mail center at Rochester Institute of Technology (Booth 4331).

Reaching your customers through the printed piece Deborah Vinson, Strategic Account Manager, Kodak (Booth 1221), introduced Shana Farrell of Fox Valley Technical College. Farrell related the college in-plant’s experience with creating the college president’s annual holiday card using Dimensional Print on its Kodak NEXPRESS. Using variable data and working with the president’s mailing list, the card went out to 325 people. Responses to the card improved significantly.

Personalized mail Clint Marquet of MacroPRO DM (in Pitney Bowes Booth 1238) closed out the session with statistics. For example, direct mail garners a 3.4% response rate, compared to 0.12% for email. According to InfoTrends, 98% of people still receive direct mail and open it. Perhaps surprisingly, young people respond well to printed communication because it is unique to them. Direct mail, when combined with other media, increases response dramatically. To increase response to print, use variable text and images, PURLs, and QR codes. The combination produces winning results.

“Mission in Print” Initiative Launches at GRAPH EXPO 2012

T

rends have started to develop in the industry that many would find troubling. The overall size of the industry has decreased, especially among smaller independent printing companies, who are more routinely being priced out of competition. Gaps have appeared in the workforce that aren’t being filled by a new generation of printing professionals. In recognition of these trends, United Print Foundation has launched its “Mission in Print” initiative at GRAPH EXPO 2012. With an online survey to assess the needs of the industry, “Mission in Print” will help United Print Foundation tailor their services to prospective clients and ensure future success throughout the print industry. Christine Wheatley, a Process Engineer with 10 years experience in the printing industry, has brought United Print Foundation’s “Mission in Print” initiative to the show floor.

You can take the “Mission in Print” survey at www.unitedprintfoundation. com. United Print would appreciate your input to support its effort to improve our industry. United Print Foundation is a new company launching at this year’s GRAPH EXPO. They have been founded with the purpose of growing and maintaining competiveness in the domestic print industry. United Print intends to provide services that reduce the cost of commercial printing by improving efficiency, fostering innovation, and expanding the labor pool. UP aims to achieve this by offering process engineering, lean manufacturing training, and technical services at a low cost to independent printers.

8 Lithrone Presses Sold... Goal Fulfilled: Avanti and Counting! Advanced Fulfillment Earns Komori reports brisk ‘iron’ sales at GRAPH EXPO 2012 By Mark Vruno

MUST SEE ’EMS Award

A The press console on the Komori Lithrone is just one of the advances that make the new press state-of-the-art.

P

erhaps the U.S. business economy is taking a turn for the better, as evidenced by several print firms making substantial capital equipment investments at GRAPH EXPO this week. As of noon Tuesday, Komori America (Booth 1255) had sold eight Lithrone sheetfed presses at the show. Two of its GL-640 models with inline coaters going to direct-marketing printer Segerdahl Corp., Wheeling, IL, which now is branded as SG 360°. “The first press will be delivered within the next few weeks,” reports Marketing Director Sue Baines. With the press manufacturer’s ongoing focus on automation, Product Manager Doug Schardt asked whether waste trumps speed in today’s plants. In the quest to save on printing costs, trimming waste may be as important as faster run times, he contends. In the Komori booth, one focus is automating the printing process, which “is more than just automating the machine,” says Schardt. The semi-automated presetting of job specifications is one example of this. Another example of process automation is more efficient makereadies,

where “we’ve made tremendous advancements,” he notes. “Our preinking program [performs] like it’s on steroids,” achieving ink stability in 20 sheets. These days, “stock costs more than press time,” Schardt adds.

Available in both sheetfed and roll-fed configurations, the 29" digital press is expected to be ready by PRINT 13 next September. “We’re somewhere between alpha and beta testing right now,” Schardt says. “In the sheetfed mode, the device can perfect or run straight.” Inkjet print technology is predicated on water-based inks, points out Schardt, because liquidity is necessary for jetting/spraying. “But water is bad for paper. Our Impremia technology employs a special dryer.” Another approach is Landa Labs’ new nano-ink solution, which “cooks off the water,” explains Schardt, who added that Komori is building the sheet-transport system for a nanographic press model.

A New Age of Data Security Opens with uSecure from Transformations

D

ata security as we know it today is an illusion. Every file, every database, every document can be hacked, pirated, corrupted, stolen, copied, and misused far more easily than anyone wants to admit. This fact is highlighted in the media on a frequent basis. In fact, with up to 90% of critical communication involving some form of confidential information, data protection and security is quickly becoming the most important issue in transactional document production.

“Typical workflows can be a black hole for data,” said Bill Tidwell, CEO of Transformations (Booth 4407). “There are far too many places where data can be accessed without authorization. The traditional methods of firewalls and access controls are no longer up to the task when faced with sophisticated attacks, or even someone just walking out the door with a flash drive full of confidential data.” That all changes with the software uSecure, the new security platform

from Transformations that utilizes SertintyOne’s UXP protocol. uSecure offers closed loop, intelligent data protection that travels with the file, keeping data encrypted from file receipt to output to archive. uSecure’s technology closes the gaps in the security infrastructures of enterprises and service providers alike and minimizes exposure to compliance violations. Data owners can control the level of protection they desire and have full audit capabilities for

tracking data access. Transformations has integrated uSecure into its Uluro software. “More compliance laws are being passed and the penalties are becoming more expensive and far more publicized. With uSecure, critical information is protected from internal and external threats by imbedding intelligent protection within the data itself, shielding it from illegal access wherever it goes, and ensuring compliance with regulations,” says Tidwell.

T

he Sterling Coilmaster III plastic coil binding system will create plastic coil from plastic filament and automatically insert it into the book from the first hole onwards. It then cuts and crimps automatically. This machine abolishes the need to store plastic coil. The cost savings of producing 12" lengths of coil from filament is well over 50%. The Sterling Coilmaster III incorporates all of the advances in automatic plastic coil binding: angled roller for speedy jam free binding, the spreading device that

allows for any size margin and the ability to bind books with any pitch with round or oval holes. Now bind books up to 50mm in diameter at speeds of up to 700 books per hour.

Conference Tracks Digital Printing Opportunities in Packaging

Yesterday’s packaging session “Digital Printing Opportunities in Packaging—a 360° View” offered printers insight on the growing opportunity in the market.

P

ackaging is a $200 billion-a-year industry worldwide that will soon represent more than one-third of the retail value of all printed material. Yet it’s hardly been touched by the digital revolution. The time is right for inkjet to have a major impact on packaging, and that’s a reason for the panel discussion “Digital Printing Opportunities in Packaging—a 360˚ View”. Moderated by Carl Joachim, Senior Partner at Caslon & Company, the panel included experts representing an array of viewpoints. Terry Straub is general manager at PaperWorks Industries, Inc./Greensboro Operations, with customers including KFC, Nestle and Clorox. The company prides itself on innovation and customer support, and is “actively investigating digital,” Straub says. Colleen L. Twomey is Assistant Professor in the Graphic Communication Department at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, whose School of Packaging Science is a training ground for packaging industry professionals. The final panelist was Gary Bernier, in Strategic Business and Brand Develop-

ment, HP Indigo and InkJet Press solutions, AMS Labels and Packaging. The panelists responded to an array of questions, starting with which issues must be addressed before increased digital adoption in packaging takes place. In addition to speed and diversity of substrates, panelists felt fear of the unknown had to be tackled. Asked how brand managers can be convinced of digital print capabilities in packaging, Twomey observed, “What brand manager want are solutions...if digital can provide an advantage in, say, speed to market, brand managers will be all over that.” Addressing the issue of digital printing helping meet sustainability goals, Straub asserted that it assists in both waste and obsolescence reduction. Bernier added that in digital, PSPs produce what clients want when they want it, reducing waste. Finally, on the issue of QR codes, printed electronics, and augmented reality, Twomey noted, “There is so much information brand managers can get from consumers’ interaction with brands in store, that the sky is the limit.”

With a footprint covering territory from New York City to Boston and as far north as Canada, Fort Orange Press continues to grow with a reputation as a leading provider of quality and efficiency. “We were really impressed with the basic functionality of the product,” said Robert Witko, president, Fort Orange Press. “We were very keen on the direct

integration with our prepress workflow, through Agfa :Apogee, directly into the HP Hiflex MIS. FI (Booth 2000) has created a $25,000 endowed scholarship through the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation (PGSF) that will be granted annually to a student in the graphic communications industry. Housed under the same roof as Printing Industries of America, PGSF has managed the industry’s largest scholarship program since its founding in 1956. “An educated workforce is critical to our industry, and providing scholarships to help students in our field is important to everyone at EFI,” said Jeff White, General Manager of EFI Monarch and PGSF board member. “EFI and PGSF staunchly believe that students who have chosen a career in our industry should have the full support of the industry, and one way to provide that support is by making education more affordable.” “PGSF is dedicated to promoting careers in print and graphics, and we are happy that EFI shares our commit-

ment to providing financial assistance to graphic communications students,” said Larry Kroll, Vice President of Development for PGSF. “EFI’s creation of an endowed scholarship is further proof that the company is dedicated to advancing our industry.” PGSF is a not-for-profit, private, industry-directed organization that dispenses undergraduate college scholarships and graduate fellowship assistance to talented men and women interested in graphic communication careers. Individuals, companies, and associations provide both annual and endowed scholarship funds to PGSF, which administers the scholarship and fellowship programs for the industry.
