Most living and dining room groupings feel natural when defined by rug shapes that complement the space and surrounding elements.

t’s quite literally a foundation piece for a room and can be a great decorative starting point to pull everything else together around it. When you have vast expanses of tile or hardwoods, area rugs help break up the monotony, add drama and personality, unify multiple pieces of furniture and more. The key to their visual success is knowing what size to buy and how to place. Factors such as pile, durability, shape, patterns, textures, and weight also must be considered when making a purchasing decision. Here are some common area rug scenarios and a few good rules of thumb to go by to create aesthetically pleasing spaces.

A large area rug that fits entirely under all elements of the room is best for creating a seamless, cohesive look.
If the rug will be next to a frequently used exterior door or will see daily foot traffic from children and pets, consider something inexpensive, but durable (e.g., natural fibers and low-pile/flat weaves are ideal), that’s easy to clean and can take spills.
As for dining rooms, rugs should extend a minimum of 24 inches from the edge of the table to allow hind chair legs to remain on the rug when pulled out. Your table and chairs will cover the center of the rug, so be sure to choose a large enough rug size so that any pattern or texture will be visible at the outside edges.
When placed at the foot of the bed, a rug can also bring in an extra layer of interest and denote a separate space, such as a sitting area in a master. It should be wider than the bed for maximum effect.

In the bedroom, an area rug should extend at least 18 inches (for king or queen) or 12 inches (for full or twin) beyond the sides of the bed. A plush texture here, while not recommended for high traffic areas, feels good first thing in the morning.
Finally, when choosing a runner rug, keep in mind they should cover the majority of the walking area in a hallway or entry. A non-slip rug pad underneath should also be used for safety and comfort.
Rugs of unusual sizes or textures defy the rules somewhat. It might be hard to get all or any of your furniture on them in a consistent way, but they can still work beautifully.
