DESIGN Since I was able to walk, my parents used to take my brother and me to the Hoek van Holland beach. That is why this beach is very special to me and that’s why I have chosen this location to make a design for “my� ultimate Beach House. The Hoek van Holland beach is actually a very special place in the Netherlands, because you can see the raw industrial harbor and container ships entering the port of Rotterdam, and also the dunes and the nature of the beach. This in combination with the concrete pier and bunkers from WWII give this beach an almost surrealistic ambiance that I personally really enjoy. What I really like about those bunkers is that they are partly covered with sand. Only the riffle openings and some parts of concrete are visible. This scenery inspired me to design a house which is partly hidden within the dune landscape. The house is as seen on the images hidden behind a concrete wall. Scale1:100 1:100 Scale

But to me, a really important part of the beach is the wind, the smell and the noises. This is why I have chosen to make corridor / path between the quarters partly open. This way the smell, noise and feeling of the wind becomes part of the house. Besides this open character the concrete wall still gives the feeling of a private closed off feeling similar to the bunkers.

DESIGN The forest retreat is not only designed as a space for meditation and escape retreat from the city life. Its also designed as a social meeting point in the middle of the woods to connect nature lovers. The building contains 3 very large bedrooms and a large communal kitchen where 15 people can cook and have dinner together. The idea behind this house is that it can be used as a bed and breakfast or fallout base for hikers, hunters and other nature lovers who want to experience nature but without going totally back to the basics.

The concept behind this design starts from the idea that rivers are the nerves of the forest. Which also means that there will be always a lot of activity around a river in a forest. If a river would dry up a part of the forest will die. Rivers do not only attract animals but also attract a lot of human activity. For example water sports, nature lovers, hikers, hunters, photographers and fisherman are commonly found near forest rivers. The idea behind this design is a liveable bridge. The river is always changing and is different every season, which is why it is necessary to place the bridge quiet high, so it will also not interfere with the river itself. It is possible to see the nature around you from every spot in the house, and it is also possible to open the glass walls and experience the smell, wind and sunlight from the forest. This way you will blend in during your stay with the forest in a much more comfy way.

HIGH-RISE VILLAGE Project: Navigation Date: February 2014, Bachelor first year Location: Marconistraat 5, Rotterdam Project specification The project “Navigation” was all about to become acquainted with one of the famous Pritzker winning Architects and the way how they work. Every student was randomly attributed to one of those architects. The actual assignment was to design a apartment with the same design methods that you’re attributed architect would use. The place of this apartment would be on one of the empty floors of the Marconitorens in Rotterdam. The target group for this project was a traveling person for example an expat. Program of requirements - attributed architect: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - Existing out of one level - Surface area 50 – 80 m2 - Maximal cubic capacity 240 m3. - Located on one of the empty floors of the Marconitoren

CONCEPT

public outdoor space -

The concept behind my design is to involve the surroundings of the apartment into the living space itself. Mies van der Rohe himself used this same concept when he designed the Farnsworth House back in the 1940’s . He choose to make the surroundings part of the design it self by making all the walls out of glass. In my concept the floor has two big open public spaces on the south and north side. The wall of the apartment that faces this public spaces is made of glass so there will arise interaction between the private and the public space. Most expats are new to town and won’t have a lot of social contacts besides work. With this concept there will basically a “village” on the eleventh floor of the tower with a village center (shared public spaces) and private housing.

DESIGN The public space of the floor is separated into an outdoor and an indoor part. The indoor part is designed to be a large living space where people can come together. It contains a large number of seats and a shared kitchen. The design of the private living space exists simply out of a core that provides a kitchen, television, bathroom, storage compartment and maintenance room. This core also contains extensible walls that can be used to create different spaces in the apartment itself. The resident can transform the apartment to his own needs with a maximum of 5 separated rooms. Also the glass wall can be closed by the resident itself. The resident can also choose how much he will be part of the village by simply pulling down the shutters.

TIME MACHINE Project: Redsign AFFR Date: May 2014, Bachelor first year Location : Nieuwe Binnenweg 362 , Rotterdam Project specification This project was arranged by the client AFFR (Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam). The AFFR was looking for a “Homes base” and choose for the old tram station located at the Nieuwe binnenweg in Rotterdam. This old station needed to be converted into a movie theatre for the festival and also needed to contain a cafe and gallery. Program of requirements - Upper floors can’t be used in the design. - Needs to contain the function of a cafe, movie theatre and art gallery. - Maximum surface area (including roof) 653m3

CONCEPT The AFFR always tries always to make their current locations part of the context of the festival. That’s why I have decided that the concept behind their home base needed to have a theme that always can be mixed into the theme of the festival. During this festival they constantly make links with their film program between architecture from the past, present and future. Basically the festival takes the visitors on a “time travel trip” from an architectural through architectural movies, documentary’s and lectures. The concept is simply to let the visitors of the building also make a time travel. The old tram station from the 19th century refers to the past and the new design will be a symbol for the future. This way the building itself will become a time machine and forms the perfect context for the festival to create a time travel experience through their programed events.

The AFFR choose for the location of the Nieuwe binnenweg mainly cause of the charm it once had when it was a functioning tram depot. But this function is nowadays completely lost. That’s why I have chosen to give the tram rails inside of the building its function back. On the rails are glass walls designed so that they can be moved around the ground floor of the building. Those walls are meant as exhibition walls and have the function of a flexible art gallery. The new build outs resemble are futuristic gesture to gain more attention to the building. I choose to this white futuristic design cause this way they create a large contrast with the old tram station itself and its surroundings. The build out at the front of the building can be converted into a open terrace and could be used to attract more people to the festival. The large tube shaped build out at the back of the building contains a lecture hall and movie theater. Also this large build out can be seen as a eyecatcher to attract more people.

DESIGN The concept behind this emerged from the many conversations I had with the teachers and students from the high school Spieringshoek. What I discovered is that most of the students think that this school is way to strict and the only moment when they can actually relax and have some fun is during the lunch breaks. The school does have a lot of seats inside of the building but on the schoolyard itself there are almost no seats at all. Also during my visits at the school I saw a lot of young energetic first year students bouncing around that didn’t really have a place to release all their energy. The schoolyard should be the perfect place to lose some of their energy but sadly the schoolyard isn’t used in anyway. The schoolyard is literally an open square without any seats on it. An interesting fact of the design of the school building is that its build around this square and the embraces the square in a way. This makes the schoolyard somewhat like the center point of the whole design. To me this empty square could be the perfect place to design a place where the students can both relax and relive some energy. The idea is to revive this center and turns this empty square into the busy heart of the school. The only way to do this probably was to design together with the students. Afterwards we showed the designs to the other students and let them decide which design would fit the best to their school identity.

CONCEPT The design most students liked was a randomly shaped cocoon like object. After the voting round it was clear to me that the end result needed to be an object what the students could use to relax and at the same time be active in. That’s why I decided it needed to be a combination of a climbing frame and a soft trampoline lounge space. The final design is an organic heart shaped object that can be used as a climbing wall and lounge spot. The inside of the heart can be used as a lounge area cause due to the soft material inside. Underneath the heart is a lighting system placed that will illuminate the heart in different luminosities. During the lunch breaks the heart will be illuminated the brightest color of red cause this is the moment when the most students will actually use the heart.

Finally a place were the teacher can’t watch us...

The heart is shaped object is based on the flow by the walking routes that the students use passing the schoolyard when they arrive and leave school and lessons shifts.

WOW I needed to loose some energy...

DAMN I needed to lose some energy... Every school should have a place like this.

VERTICAL SPEED SPA Project : Care & Cure Data : May 2015, Bachelor second year Location : G.J. De Jonghweg, Rotterdam Project specification The project Care and Cure was meant to be a new development project for a healthcare avenue at the G.J. De Jongh weg near the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam. This healthcare avenue would be a long boulevard that would connect all different types of healthcare facilities and Clinique’s to each other. Every student was free to choose their own kind of healthcare facilities or clinics during this project. I have chosen the healing power of water as my main theme true this project. I ended up designing a hydrotherapy centre or ‘spa’ that only focuses on the healing power of different water temperatures. The illnesses that would be treated in this facility are mainly stress, arthritis and other similar muscle diseases. Program of requirements - Maximum Surface area 200 m² - An Innovative vision on the theme Care & Cure

CONCEPT Spas have changed in many ways throughout the centuries, and is nowadays seen as a luxurious and expensive form of relaxation. For people with Arthritis, however, the most important part of a spa visit is the difference in temperature of the water rather than a luxurious treatment, and for the best effect they should be treated more often than once in a while. To answer this need, I have come up with a concept of a SpeedSpa, where people can pay by the hour and choose if they want a long visit or a short speed visit. All the visitors will begin their Spa treatment at the top floor and will come down every time one floor just like the water in the Spa itself does. The sustainable part of the building is equally important to the building’s design. One third of the water used in the SPA is filtered rainwater. This water will be collected on the roof of the building, and will come down through different helophyte filters. The visitors are going down the same route through the building as the rainwater and can even see the water getting cleaner throughout the Spa during their stay.

DESIGN The leading element in the design process are the speed routes ,used to create different types of flow throughout the building. The routes are represented by different stairs that will make the visitors walk directly into the different baths. The diving shaft in the building is also one of the speed routes for the more daring visitors. The building of the spa is circular system that pumps the water around. The rain water collecting on the roof will flow down through different natural helophyte filters that are placed around the building on different floors.

After this process, the water will be pumped to the top floor and allowed to flow from this floor down again through every floor by way of waterfalls. This way the baths will flow into each other and create baths with different water temperatures. The lowest bath(activity bath) will receive water in three different temperatures from different baths.

The end result of this project was to create an interior design for the Business-station at the WDKA. This station was meant to be a workplace where students could learn more about the commercial world and entrepreneurship behind art. CONCEPT Before starting to design a interior we first were assigned to create an artwork. For me this artwork should represent the fear of failure that I and a lot of other students experience when people are starting to talk about starting your own business as an artist. But this actually is a larger problem within the creative sector, a lot of artists don’t even want to think about entrepreneurship and the commercial side of art. The bended and curved wire construction represent as seen on the cover page of this project reprents the free and creative mind and the dark substance that absorbs this almost completely. This black substance represents the fear that a lot of students have when it comes to entrepreneurship and commercial thinking. The concept I have come up with is to create a workspace / business station were students feel safe and at home. The current business station is seen on the background of this page and for me it clear that this isn’t a space were Art students feel at home and allowed to be completely their self. In fact I visited the business station several times and the only students that use it are leisure management students and not Art students from the WDKA itself.

CREATIVE WORKSPACE LIVING ROOM The work areas in the business-station are all designed to look like living rooms. This way the students can work in a more relaxed way and in a unforced ambiance. OFFICE The business station is still a station of the WDKA wich means there will be working teachers. The teachers can choose if they want to make their office part of the large open area or keep it seperated.

BRAIN BUS One of the fundamental ideas within art education is to always discuss and talk about youre ideas. The brain bus is the place were students can come together in a private seperated area to work together. PITCH PODIUM Besides discussing youre work is pitching youre work the most important skill within entrepreneurship. In the middle of the area is the pitch podium wich is a ‘unsafe’ place were the students can pitch their ideas infront of a audiance.

MAC BUS Nowadays all students use laptops so the station doesn’t require a huge amount of desktops as they had before. The MAC bus provides enough desktops for the students that want a bit more privacy and require a desktop for their work. MEETING ROOM Cause of the fact that most students don’t have an office or meeting room it can be hard for them to receive clients. To solve this problem the station has a meeting room for the students to receive informal and formal clients. CLASS ROOM The business-station also provides different lectures. Here for they need a quiet private area. I have chosen to make this space to be at the end of the large open area and can be optionally used as a private classroom.

As long as the Dutch consumer keeps consuming meat for several meals a day the industry will never change. This also means that the industry will keep growing and build bigger farms.

The primary goal of this minor is to Take a Stand and form a unique and personal position within the public-private domain. The central goal of this minor is eventually to represent a opinion, or start heavy opposition, demonstrative or a rebellious act by showing your commitment in visual statements from different directions and disciplines. In the minor Take a Stand you start your own project as a creative and autonomous professional by doing research from within your own personal artistic vision, intuitions and emotions, but also your ideals or political affiliation are at stake in developing a (autonomous) visual statement. Both the amount of kilograms we consume as the type of meat we choose decide which type of farming industry will develop in our country. For example an animal that is meant for the production of organic meat needs twice as much square meter ground as ‘average’ meat.

A possible solution could be to no longer enlarge stables horizontal but instead enlarge them vertical. This way u can turn an average stable in a much more efficient stable without using a huge amount of land. But the big question is of course not about the fact if this is a possible but about the question if we as consumer can ethically justify with this way of farming ?

CONCEPT The project BIG YELLOW BARN started from out a personal fascination with hidden worlds. By doing some research about this theme I ended up with the food industry. Specifically the meat industry has something surreal about itself because this very large form of industry is slowly fading away out of the Dutch landscapes. Think about it ‌ when was the last time you saw a large amount of chickens or pigs mess around in the many green Dutch fields ? To learn a bit more about this mysterious phenomenon I decided to do some field research and visit some of the biggest Dutch livestock farmers mainly to discover what their company looks like and what happened to the Dutch farmer landscape. But the farmers intrigued me a lot more than the state of the animals or the way how this type of industry changes the landscape. All farmers I spoke to had a enormous passion and love for their profession and animals. But instead of rewarding them for their hard work they get mainly negative media attention. For them this is a very difficult dilemma cause they love their profession but cause of this negative attention it gets harder and harder to keep their company up and running. The Dutch farmers do not only provide only for the Dutch every dinner a nice steak but are also responsible for a large part of the worlds food chain being the second biggest meat exporters of the world. If we want to keep this large industry in the Netherlands we as Dutch should choose now. Both the amount of kilograms of meat we eat as the type of meat we consume determine what type of meat industry we will have. At the end the meat industry produces what the consumers want. From this point of view I started tot think about a way how the consumer could be informed in a more physical way about the product they buy. I decided instead of bringing the consumers to the product to bring the product to the consumers. The idea was to design a large exposition building with an educational theme about the cattle and meat industry of the Netherlands.

DESIGN The design is based on a possible ‘future vision’ of what bio industry could look like in the near future. It’s like a glimpse towards the possible big XL factory farms of the future. Lots of cattle farmers are talking about efficiency in their field of expertise and how to benefit from this. The more efficient a stable works the more profitable your product will become. From this perspective I start to think, what would be the most efficient way to design a stable ? By stacking stables on top of each other u can create much larger stables on a very small footprint which would mean a much more efficient stable. The whole design of the building consist of a stacking of different type of bio-industrial landscapes and together they form a vertical plea about the future and possibilities of the Dutch Bio-Industry. Every floor within the exposition building represents a part of the plea and cause of this every floor has its own function within this plea. The different components of a written plea are as follows : Introduction, pro argument, con argument, counter argument, pro argument, con argument and finally the conclusion. Those components are represented by the following forms of bio farms : the petting zoo, the green pasture, the factory farm, the educational centre, the pure nature pasture, bio farm, the slaughterhouse and finally as conclusion the supermarket. The visitor follows a route straight through the stacked landscapes with the aim to gain more insight into all the aspects of the meat industry. By stacking the different themed floors on top of each other u don’t necessary create an interesting building. This is why the vertical exposition is build up out of differently shaped miniature landscapes with each its own specific character. For example the green pasture landscape is designed with a similar curve as a natural slope and the educational centre is designed like a large bended volume which represents the bending point halfway the plea. Also every floor has its own different type of construction which fits to the theme. The landscapes together with the construction form the total building and creates a very unique façade. All the different programme components are connected with each other by one large public route that wriggles through the structure. This route consists out of all different type of bridges, ramps, slopes, elevators and walkways that are placed around the building. Since the visitors will always start their journey from the top of the building and leave at the bottom is it not possible to skip any of the exposition floors. This way the visitors will be confronted with the positive and friendly forms of farming and the less pleasurable variants. At the end it’s up to the visitors what they think is the right way of bio industrial farming for our country. Eventually the consumer decides what kind of meat they buy and the farmers will adapt to this kind of meat.

DAY

CONTEXT

One of the large disadvantages of the current Stopera building is that it seems not to be a public building by day. Despite the huge scale of the building its not used intensively by a large group of people. The building contains only 2 large functions of an Opera-house and a city hall but by day those two functions are hardly accessible. During the day the city hall would fulfil the public part of the building but these days the public function of the city hall has almost completely disappeared. The opera-house on the other hand has the perfect location faced at the south to fulfill a public function during daylight hours, however this amazing advantages of this location isn’t used in the current Stopera design at all. Because of this the square in front of the Stopera isn’t used at all and creates even more anonymous and deserted feeling.

Where the hell is the entrance of this building ?

The only real public area which is used by day with the current building is the Waterlooplein marketplace at the back of the Stopera. Daily a lot of people visit this flea market from all over the world but sadly this market isn’t part of the current design.

The National Opera The chosen context for my graduation project is the national opera building of the Netherlands located in Amsterdam. The reason why I have chosen this building called the Stopera is mainly cause I am a very big opera fan myself and cause of this one of the many users of this building. But at the same time I see myself as an architect and when I visit this building I always feel a little bit irritated by the massive design flaws this building contains from both architectural and urban design perspective. The main goal when this building was designed was to create a big building for opera and ballet performances with a less elite character then the 19th century royal concert building also located in Amsterdam. But the architect never succeeded to design a building that would be accepted and loved by the citizens of Amsterdam. Quite the opposite happened the Amsterdammers already hated the building even before it was build. Which is quiet logic in a way cause the Stopera is build on top of one of the most prominent and beautiful locations of Amsterdam. A lot of citizens have the feeling that this amazing location is confiscated by a big building that they never are going to use. Only a very select group of people namely opera/ballet fans and government officials are using this building which isn’t exactly the group of people that contribute to a more approachable and public feeling.

From this view I started to think how would I as a designer have designed a approachable and public opera building for a city as Amsterdam ? The main goal of my project was to research how to use architecture to turn a location like this into a place every citizen can enjoy.


NIGHT

You would expect the Stopera’s main function is to provide an Opera-auditorium and foyer would be primarily used at night. And you would also expect that this building would be part of the nightlife of Amsterdam like most opera buildings such as in Paris, London, Milano, Rome and Berlin. But this is not the case; instead the opposite is true. The foyer is only used before and during the breaks between Opera or Ballet performances which means it isn’t open for public any other day of the week. Sadly those performances are only held a few times a month meaning that the Opera building is only open for public when performances are held and only for show patrons.

It is a shame the building is only used by a very small group of people because the Stopera location and the Waterlooplein are both very special areas within Amsterdam. The location is close to the nightlife district of Amsterdam which is partly active around the Reugliersdwarstraat and the Rembrandtplein which are only 1 bridge separated from the Stopera location. This location offers the amazing opportunity to extend the nightlife district, especially since there isn’t any location within the city centre of Amsterdam to hold large events.

The whole building blocks every view !

Mainly the huge facades of the building lined parallel to the Zwanenburgwal and the Amstel give a feeling of a big citadel which isn’t built for the common man. This is cost by the fact that u can’t look into any part of the building from street level and the fact that the entrances are placed far away apart from each other and are even partly ‘hidden’ away. Cause of this the building feels more like a fortress or city wall with a certain anonymity over it and not as a public open building. You could almost say that building is a large block in the middle of the old city of Amsterdam. The building doesn’t only feel like a block it also blockades a certain infrastructural flow and the sightlines from eye level. From both the Waterlooplein and the Mr. Visser plein the building blockades the view on the canals and the Amstel which makes u almost feel a bit lost. Besides this the current function of the building also doesn’t contribute to the city. The municipality wing of the building was meant to be a public city hall but nowadays it only has a function as a office for government officials. But also the Opera wing which was meant to be a more public version of the current concert building doesn’t really fulfil this purpose. By day its not even possible to enter the building. Only at night the building is open for public when the ballet or opera performances are held. At the end this conclusion formed the fundamental idea behind my own design for a new opera building. The aim of this project was to create a as public and open possible opera building and that could be accepted and loved by the citizens of Amsterdam. 56

CONCEPT

Current situation

The main idea for the new opera building arises from the fact that the surroundings are blocked by the current Stopera building. From the street perspective from both the Waterlooplein and Mr. Visserplein its no longer possible to see the Amstel, canals and canal houses as the building blocks all the various views (A). I began thinking of a way to create a building which doesn’t block surrounding lines of sight. Lifting the building would be the ultimate way to do this.

Building lifting would it make possible to look underneath the Stopeara and see the Amstel and canal houses and surroundings once again and creating a huge covered plaza (B). After this conclusion I began thinking of maximization of the capacity of the amount of square meters. Simply by using the roof you already double the current amount of outdoor public space. The roof can be used as an enormous public park in the middle of the old city centre of Amsterdam (C). The building will then consist of three connected levels, with each having their own type of visual language; 1) the world underneath the building, 2) inside the building and 3) on top of the building (D). This would create a building with some public functions and interlaced with the public landscape.

DESIGN

It isn’t possible to create a floating volume in the air so I began thinking of ways to reshape the volume into a building. The idea to create a building with a public character it is important that all parts of the building are publicly accessible, but the public park on top of the roof doesn’t feel very accessible from the ground-level. This is why I wanted to reshape the building in a way that a part of the roof is at the same level as ground-level. This way you create a more natural flow from the ground level to the roof which also creates a more accessible gesture to invite people on the roof contributing to the public character. I have chosen to push a part of the volume in the middle of the left side towards the ground level which creates a large dent. This dent creates a direct entrance from the ground level to the roof. But this dent also could be used as a large arena for big events on the Waterlooplein market square. This dent isn’t enough to hold the whole building up in the air. This is why I reshaped the volume of the building and recurved one of the corners in a way that it will touch the ground level. This way a part of the volume is extracted at one of the corners at the ground level. This creates a slope which offers the perfect place for a fan-shaped opera auditorium. From a conceptual view this bend is caused by a huge metal globe that has fallen out of the sky on top of the building. Inside of this globe is the stage of the auditorium. The other side of the building is a larger version of this globe falling on top of the corner of the volume which creates a light waviness in the design. Located in this XL version of the metal globe is a very large dance club. The building’s end creates a massive covered plaza, which can be used as a public covered marketplace making it especially useful in the Dutch wet climate. The most visible characteristic in this plaza is the orange, fluid landscape that forms a strong contrast within the context itself. The orange colour gives a friendly and pleasant appearance and gives the somewhat dark space underneath the building a more elegant ambiance. Underneath this fluid landscape are a few cafes and shops which provide even more activity underneath the building besides the marketplace and the bicycle paths.
