DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS MARK BENSON The University at Albany named Mark Benson as director of athletics on August 20, 2014. Benson, 46, became the University’s second AD since the program entered Division I sports in 1999. As director, Benson provides leadership for UAlbany’s NCAA Division I, 18-sport intercollegiate athletics program and its scholar student athletes. In his first year, the UAlbany men’s and women’s athletics teams were recognized in the final Capital One Cup standings, which honors the nation’s best Division I athletic programs. The Great Dane women’s programs finished 49th, while the men placed 50th out of 106 ranked schools and 347 total NCAA Division I athletic programs. UAlbany competed in a school-record six NCAA Tournaments, while winning nine conference championships, and was one of three universities in the country to have its men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, field hockey, and women’ golf teams make NCAA Division I Tournament appearances -- the others were Duke and North Carolina. With field hockey’s run to the Final Four and men’s lacrosse’s quarterfinal appearance, the Great Danes boasted two top-10 national finishes under Benson’s surveillance.

The success didn’t stop in year two as the Great Danes captured the America East Commissioner’s Cup for the fourth straight year and fifth time in school history. UAlbany won eighth conference championships in 2015-16 and made five NCAA Tournament appearances. In addition, in the naming of Tom & Mary Casey Stadium, Benson helped garner a $10 million gift to support the football stadium and other facilities, expand scholarships for student-athletes, and address additional priorities in athletics. The gift was made by The Bernard and Millie Children’s Foundation on Oct. 9, 2015. Prior to UAlbany, Benson was the senior associate athletic director at Old Dominion University. He also served as the assistant vice president for Athletic Development for eight years, and was an adjunct professor in the Sports Management Program. During his time at Old Dominion, Benson was responsible for budget preparation and administration, as well as providing sport supervision for men’s and women’s sailing. During Benson’s tenure at Old Dominion, the Athletic Endowment grew more than $16 million and the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation annual fund grew from $400,000 to $4.1 million. Benson was responsible for soliciting seven $1 million plus gifts to athletics, as well as numerous significant commitments from donors. Prior to his time at Old Dominion, Benson worked at Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc. as an Educational Channel manager. In his role with Coca-Cola, he managed the Educational Channel for the Commonwealth Division, which covers sales centers from eastern Delaware to eastern North Carolina. Benson developed financial and marketing proposals as well as negotiated beverage contracts with colleges and universities within his division. Benson and his wife Hunter are the parents of three daughters, Vandy Grace, Lydon and Hannum. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University.

2016 FIELD HOCKEY MEDIA GUIDE
HEAD COACH PHIL SYKES Phil Sykes enters his 13th season as head coach of the University at Albany field hockey program in 2016. In his tenure, Sykes has guided the Great Danes to five of the last seven America East Conference Championship titles (2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015) and five NCAA Tournament berths. With his efforts, Sykes has been named America East Conference Coach of the Year three times (2008, 2009, 2014). At the helm over the past 12 seasons, Sykes’s Great Danes are currently riding a streak of 11 winning seasons. UAlbany has posted double-digit wins the past 10 seasons, including its highest total of 20 in 2014. The 2015 Great Danes returned to the NCAA Tournament after allowing just one goal in the new-look America East Tournament, and compiling an overall record of 19-3. UAlbany downed UC Davis 7-1 in the quarterfinals, Pacific 5-0 in the semifinals and No. 19 Maine 2-0 in the championship. The 2015 senior class of Liza Morgan, Laura Page, Fiori Van Rijswijk and Emily White graduated as the winningest four-year group in program history under Sykes’s guidance. Sykes once again had outstanding individual play, as Paula Heuser garnered her second NFHCA First Team All-American honor. She is also the first Great Dane to be honored as an All-American three times. Heuser was selected as the NFHCA Northeast Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons after ranking third nationally in points per game and goals per game. Entering her junior year, Heuser is the current active career leader across all three NCAA divisions in points (194) and goals (80). Joining Heuser in the national offensive ranks was Van Rijswijk, finishing as the national runner-up in assists per game (0.94). Sykes also led a program-record six Great Danes to NFHCA All-Region teams in Anna Bottino, Paula Heuser, Jaclyn Hibbs, Laura Page, Maxi Primus and Van Rijswijk. In his 11th season, Sykes guided the Great Danes to a historic 2014 year on all cylinders. UAlbany won its first NCAA Tournament game on Nov. 15 in the First Round against No. 5 Wake Forest 2-1 in College Park, Md. UAlbany followed up that victory by beating regional host No. 2 Maryland in the Second Round on Nov. 16, 2-1. Those two victories sent the 2014 squad to the University’s first all-time appearance in a national semifinal. Phil Sykes also became the first male head coach since the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Tournament was established in 1981 to appear in the NCAA Semifinals. He was named the NFHCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year ad ECAC Coach of the Year for his efforts. The Purple & Gold took its fourth America East Championship all-time in 2014, winning the final by a record score of 5-0 against New Hampshire. It was the first time since the 90s there was a shutout in the conference final, and it was the largest margin of victory all-time. The Great Danes took an all-time single season record 20 games in 2014, behind the individual efforts of star midfielder Paula Heuser and goalkeeper Maxi Primus. won its first game against a top-10 nationally ranked opponent on Sept. 14 when the team downed No. 8 Stanford in Palo Alto 1-0. The Purple & Gold went on to achieve its highest all-time national ranking at No. 7. Heuser was named the Honda Sport Award Winner, NFHCA National Player of the Year and an NFHCA First Team All-American; while Primus became the first goalkeeper all-time at UAlbany to earn All-America honors on the third team under Sykes’s tutelage. Sykes compiled one of the toughest non-conference schedules in history in 2013, with games against No. 4 Virginia, No. 6 Stanford and 2012 NCAA Champion, Princeton. The Great Danes went 15-6, including a 9-0 start. The Purple & Gold achieved its then-highest all-time national ranking at No. 11 for the week of Sept. 16. The 2013 squad was ranked for 16 consecutive weeks. The Great Danes returned to the America East Championship game in 2013, falling 3-2 to New Hampshire. UAlbany took home several major awards, including Offensive Player of the Year (Daphne Voormolen), as well as Rookie and Midfielder of the Year (Paula Heuser). Heuser became the first America East field hockey student-athlete to earn Rookie and Midfielder of the Year honors in the same year. Sykes coached two All-Americans in 2013. Senior Corrine McConville was named to the NFHCA All-America Third Team, while Heuser was selected for the second team. McConville became just the second Great Dane to earn AllAmerica status twice in her career. McConville and Heuser also became the first two UAlbany players to garner All-America honors in the same season. UAlbany tallied its third America East Tournament Championship with a win over New Hampshire, 3-1, in 2012. The Great Danes moved on to face Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. UAlbany fell 2-1 to the Nittany Lions, finishing 13-8 on the season. The Great Danes tallied four student-athletes on the America East All-Conference squads, four on the AllAcademic team, and two on the All-Rookie squad. Kristi Troch took home her third consecutive Goalkeeper of the Year award; Laura Page garnered Co-Rookie of the Year and Daphne Voormolen was selected as Co-Offensive Player of the Year. The Great Danes recorded a 13-7 overall record and 3-2 in conference play in 2011. UAlbany fell to the 10th-ranked UNH Wildcats, 1-0, in the semifinals of the America East Conference Tournament. Sykes watched Kristi Troch defend her Goalkeeper of the Year award for the second consecutive year. In 2010, UAlbany posted a 16-6 record, going 4-1 in conference play. A mentor to the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year, Kristi Troch and Rookie of the Year, Corrine McConville, Sykes also saw Christina Patrick and Taylor Luke, alongside Troch, earn All-Conference first team accolades, while Daphne Voormolen joined McConville on the All-Rookie team. Since joining the Great Danes, Sykes has coached five NFHCA All-Americans, 20 NFHCA All-Region selections and 11 America East Players of the Year. In addition to his work on the field, the 12-year head coach has also mentored six NFHCA Scholars of Distinction and 40 NFHCA National Academic squad members. Four student-athletes have been named America East Field Hockey

MICHELLE SIMPSON Assistant Coach • UAlbany ‘09 • Eighth season
Michelle Simpson just completed her seventh season as assistant coach for the UAlbany field hockey team in 2015. She has spent 10 seasons with the Danes, three as a player and seven as a member of the coaching staff. Simpson works primarily with the goalkeepers and the offense, improving the technical skills and game strategy of players. She has helped the Great Danes to five America East Tournament and league regular season titles as a player and coach. A former midfielder, Simpson has coached two goalies to a combined four America East Goalkeeper of the Year accolades. Simpson was elected to the UAlbany Athletics Hall of Fame in the Class of 2016 after her stellar playing career with the Great Danes, including being a two-time All-American and earning 101 career points. She led UAlbany to the program’s first-ever America East Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth in the 2008 season. In her third season in the cage, Maxi Primus became the all-time winningest goalkeeper in program history under Simpson’s tutelage. Through her junior year, Primus has won 53 games to go with 20 career shutouts. She ranks fourth among NCAA Division I goalkeepers with a career goals against average of 1.12 heading into her final year of eligibility. Simpson led Primus to NFHCA All-American honors in 2014, the first UAlbany goalkeeper all-time to earn the award. Primus was also unanimously named the America East Goalkeeper of the Year. In her sophomore season, Primus concluded the year with the top goals against average in the league and the nation. Primus shutout two nationally-ranked opponents, and held the No. 1 offense in the nation in No. 2 Maryland to just one goal in the NCAA Second Round. Primus set a new record for single-season wins and Division I single-season shutouts. From 2010-12, Simpson led Kristi Troch to America East Goalkeeper of the Year honors in consecutive seasons. Troch is the only league goalkeeper all-time to receive the award three times. In her first season as a coach, Simpson helped guide the Great Danes to their second America East Conference title and second NCAA Tournament appearance. Simpson, a two-time All-American, was named the America East Conference Midfielder of the Year in 2008 after scoring 10 goals and recording 12 assists. Simpson, who was named UAlbany’s Female Athlete of the Year for 2008-2009, finished her career ranked second all-time in career points (101) as well as fourth in goals (37) and assists (27). She was a three-time all-conference first team selection and was named the offensive player of the year in 2006. As having one of the most decorated careers in program history, Simpson became the first UAlbany player in the Division I era to earn All-America status, garnering the accolade in 2007 and 2008. She was also a three-time NFHCA All-Northeast Region selection and ECAC Division I All-Star. Simpson was invited to play in the North-South Senior All-Start game after leading the Great Danes to the program’s first-ever America East Championship and NCAA Tournament berth. ABOUT UALBANY ATHLETICS UAlbany is a member of the America East Conference in 16 of 18 varsity sports, while women’s golf is an associate member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and football, a Division I FCS program, is an associate member of the Colonial Athletic Association. UAlbany has won 91 conference championships and has made 42 NCAA Tournament appearances since moving to Division I in 1999. Proving to be a perennial power, the Great Danes have won eight or more conference titles in each of the last six years. In the 2015-16 season, UAlbany won America East championships in field hockey and women’s soccer in the fall, women’s basketball plus men’s and women’s indoor track & field in the winter and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field and tennis in the spring. In 2014-15, UAlbany competed in a school-record six NCAA Tournaments, while winning nine conference championships, and was one of three universities in the country to have its men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, field hockey, and women’ golf teams make NCAA Division I Tournament appearances -- the others were Duke and North Carolina. In addition, field hockey’s run to the Final Four was a first for any SUNY school, while Paula Heuser was named the National Player of the Year. UAlbany is also home to Lyle Thompson, the only back-to-back Tewaaraton Award winner -- an honor given to the best collegiate lacrosse player in the country. Including Thompson, UAlbany has had 13 players selected in the Major League Lacrosse Draft, nine players have been drafted by Major League Baseball, while 12 football players have inked NFL contracts.
