UALBANY GREAT DANES 2016 WOMEN’S SOCCER GAME NOTES
GAME 20 @ UCONN - NCAA 1ST ROUND
HEAD COACH CAITLIN CUCCHIELLA Caitlin Cucchiella is in her fourth year as head women’s soccer coach at UAlbany, leading the Great Danes to their first two America East Tournament titles in program history in 2015 and 2016. UAlbany continued to make program history under Cucchiella in 2016, earning the program’s first-ever America East regular season title with a team record six league victories, adding a tie for 19 points to share the title with Hartford. UAlbany met Hartford for the America East title game at Casey Stadium, the first time the Great Danes ever hosted the conference championship game, and defeated the Hawks 2-1 to win its second consecutive conference tournament. The team also tied a program record with 11 victories during the season. UAlbany also set a program record with six all-conference players, including the America East Co-Rookie of the Year Meghan Cavanaugh. Caitlyn Paltsios and Caroline Kopp earned places on the First Team while Cavanaugh, Vivian Vega, Kiana Rugar and Alexa Schneider were placed on the Second Team. In just her third season at the helm, Cucchiella led UAlbany to an 11-win season, tying the most victories in a single year in program history, the 2015 America East Tournament title and the team’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

In 2015, UAlbany had its second double digit win season in Division I history. The team, winning its final three conference games, finished tied for second place in the America East to pick up the 2-seed, its highest placement in the league tournament. UAlbany came back twice, defeating Vermont 2-1 in overtime then taking down Hartford 2-1 on the road to secure the America East Tournament title and subsequent NCAA Tournament automatic qualifier. UAlbany drew eventual national champion Penn State in the NCAA First Round and ended the season with a 11-9-1 overall record and 4-3-1 conference tally. Alexa Schneider became the program’s first-ever two-time America East AllConference First Team player while Vivian Vega, who earned a place on the U20 Mexican National Team, was placed on the All-Conference Second Team. 2014 saw a strong turnaround for UAlbany under Coach Cucchiella as the Great Danes improved their win total from two to seven and their undefeated games total from three to 12. The team, which earned program records with 35 goals, 32 assists and 102 points, finished 7-9-5 overall and 4-2-1 in the America East for a fourth place finish after being predicted in the preseason poll to finish eighth. UAlbany defeated 5-seed Maine 2-0 in the America East quarterfinals to earn a semifinal berth. Vivian Vega was named America East Rookie of the Year after earning 22 points, with she and Alexa Schneider earning All-Conference First Team honors, only the second season that the program earned two First Team players. Shelby Belak and Caitlyn Paltsios each earned All-Conference Second Team status while Vega and Kiana Rugar were placed on the All-Rookie Team. Although her first year at UAlbany was a challenge on the field, the team earned an National Soccer Coaches Assocation of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for achieving over a 3.0 GPA in the classroom from the 201213 season. Freshman Alexa Schneider was chosen as a member of the America East All-Rookie Team. She previously was the first full-time Head Coach at the Sage Colleges, leading the Gators to a 4-4-1 Skyline Conference record and conference tournament participation. Prior to Sage, she was the first assistant coach at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland for three years. Collegiately, Colfer was a scholarshiped student-athlete at the Ohio State University from 2005-09, playing as a forward and center midfielder. She ranked 13th all-time in career assists at the time of her graduation. She was an NSCAA Academic All-America and four-time Ohio State University Scholar-Athlete award recipient, also being a two-time All-Big Ten Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Colfer recently completed her US Soccer Federation National “A” License requirements in 2013. The National “A” license is the highest level coaching license awarded in the United States. In 2010, she completed her National “C” course and she was chosen as the recipient of the US Soccer Federation “Bob McNulty Award,” given to the coach who best exemplifies the performance, attitude, and devotion sought by the USSF at its National “C” License School. At the time of her hiring at UAlbany, Colfer stated: “I have always wanted to be a Division I head coach. To be given the opportunity to take on the responsibility as head coach for the University at Albany is a great privilege and honor,” said Colfer. She brings to UAlbany a unique skill set and relentless pursuit of achievement, which will be the foundation for student-athlete success on the field and in the classroom.
