UAlbany Battles Penn State in 2015 NCAA Tournament First Round • The UAlbany women’s soccer team is playing in its first-ever NCAA Tournament, taking on Penn State at Jeffrey Field in University Park on Friday, November 13th at 6:30 p.m. • UAlbany, the 2015 America East champion, earned an automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament with the program’s first title in history. Penn State also earned an automatic qualifier as the Big Ten champion and was selected as one of four 1-seeds in the NCAA Tournament. • The victor of today’s contest will advance to the NCAA Second Round, playing the winner of St. John’s-Boston University on Friday, November 20th. • UAlbany has earned five consecutive victories, coming off a 2-1 road victory at Hartford for the 2015 America East title, to stand at 11-8-1 overall. Penn State defeated Rutgers 2-0 at home to win the 2015 Big Ten Championship and improve to 16-3-2 on the season. • This is the first-ever meeting between UAlbany and Penn State. It is also the first time UAlbany will play a Big Ten team.

UALBANY GREAT DANES 2015 WOMEN’S SOCCER GAME NOTES

UALBANY COMES BACK TO BEAT HARTFORD FOR 2015 AE TITLE Down 1-0 with nine minutes left, UAlbany netted two goals in six minutes to rally past Hartford on the road 2-1 to win the 2015 America East championship and the program’s first-ever league title. Each coming off the bench, Allison Carhart scored the equalizer goal, from Caitlyn Paltsios, in the 82nd minute off a free kick, then Kelly Kempf put UAlbany ahead on a long range shot out of a scrum in the 88th minute. UAlbany was standing in seventh place in the America East with two regular season games left. Including an earlier victory at Vermont, UAlbany won its final three AE games in shutout fashion to pick up the 2-seed. The Great Danes defeated Vermont 2-1 in overtime off a Kiana Rugar golden goal in the America East semifinals to earn the berth in the title game. It was UAlbany’s second-ever appearance in the America East title game. The Great Danes fell to Boston University 2-0 in 2011. 2015 - WINNINGEST SEASON IN UALBANY HISTORY With 11 victories this year, UAlbany has earned its winningest season in its Division I history, surpassing its previous high of 10 wins in 2010. This year also ties the most victories in a season in program history, with the Great Danes winning 11 games in 1981. Under head coach Caitlin Cucchiella, the Great Danes have gone from two wins and a eighth place finish in the America East in 2013 to the conference champions and 11 victories in 2015.

UAlbany wins its opener at Davidson 2-1 off a Mariah Williams 65th minute goal. Sept. 24: --UAlbany defeats Rhode Island 1-0 for its fifth non-conference win. Team ties a DI program record five victories before America East play. Sept. 27: --Head coach Caitlin Cucchiella returns to her coaching duties. UAlbany opens AE play with a 1-1 draw at UMBC. Oct. 1: --UAlbany defeats Binghamton 2-1 on a late Vivian Vega goal. Team starts with four points in first two AE games. Oct. 15: --Great Danes fall 2-1 to Hartford to drop third game in a row. UAlbany was up 1-0 after 75 minutes. Vivian Vega leaves team to train with U20 Mexico. Oct. 22: --Sitting in seventh place in the AE with two games to go (America East Tournament takes top six), UAlbany defeats UMass Lowell 4-0 to go to fourth place. Oct. 25: --Vivian Vega returns to the team. On a Caitlyn Paltsios corner kick goal, UAlbany beats then second-place Maine 1-0 and picks up the 2-seed in the AE Tournament. Nov. 1: --Down 1-0 to 3-seed Vermont, UAlbany forces overtime with an Alexa Schneider goal. Williams feeds Kiana Rugar for a golden goal to send UAlbany to the AE title game. Nov. 8: --UAlbany scores twice in final nine minutes to come back on the road and defeat 1-seed Hartford 2-1. Kelly Kempf scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute. Nov. 9: --UAlbany draws Penn State for its first-ever NCAA Tournament game.

VIVIAN VEGA TRAINS WITH U-20 MEXICAN NATIONAL TEAM In late October, Vivian Vega was invited to tryout and compete with the U-20 Mexican National Team in preparation for the 2015 CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship in December. Vega is the first UAlbany women’s soccer player ever to compete for a national team. Vega, the 2014 America East Rookie of the Year, is a California native with Mexican heritage and dual citizenship with Mexico and the United States. GOALS, GOALS, GOALS UAlbany is the America East leader in goals scored with 33. Alexa Schneider is tied for fifth in the league in goals scored with seven, while Vivian Vega is tied for eighth with six. Kiana Rugar and Mariah Williams each have five goals on the year.

KRISTA FITZPATRICK - UALBANY ALL-TIME ASSISTS LEADER Assisting Allison Carhart’s game-winning goal vs. UMass Lowell, Krista Fitzpatrick became UAlbany’s all-time assists leader, now totaling 14 in her career after the win over Vermont. On the season, Fitzpatrick has seven assists, second in the America East and tying the UAlbany single season program record. After her two-assist game against Vermont, redshirt sophomore Kiana Rugar is just behind Fitzpatrick’s mark with 12 assists. Rugar had a program single season record seven assists in 2014. FEAR THE FRESHMEN UAlbany’s 2015 freshman class has been a vital part of the team. Defender Caroline Kopp, who has started all 20 games on the back line, and Mariah Williams, the leading scorer off the bench with five goals, each earned America East All-Rookie honors. Savanah Courtney also started all 20 games on the back line.

THREE GREAT DANES EARN AE ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM RECOGNITION Three UAlbany players were placed on the 2015 America East AllConference Teams. Alexa Schneider became the first Great Dane ever to earn First Team honors twice, 2014 and 2015. Vivian Vega and Shelby Belak each landed on the Second Team, also earning all-conference honors for the second year in a row. ALANA OLIVIERI STEPS INTO THE CAGE Alana Olivieri has started the last six games for UAlbany at goalkeeper in her first-ever collegiate starts. She has recorded three shutout victories and has allowed just four goals in 23 shots on goal in 561:03 minutes. In her career, she has played in 10 games, allowing 0.74 goals per game and saving 24 shots on goal out of 29. ATTACK FIRST, ATTACK LAST UAlbany has fared far better in games where it has scored first. In games where a Great Dane has netted the contest’s first goal, UAlbany is 8-2-1, compared to 2-6-0 when the opponent scores first. On the other side, UAlbany is 11-0-0 when it scores the game’s last goal, compared to 0-8-1 when the opponent scores last. SCOUTING PENN STATE: A former member of the U-20 USA Team, senior forward Mallory Weber leads the team with eight goals and eight assists. The leading goal-scorer with ten is sophomore forward Megan Schafer. A threeyear starting goalkeeper, senior Britt Eckerstrom has 16 wins, saving 82.1% of shots and allowing 0.58 goals a game. She is defended by sophomore Kaleigh Riehl, a current member of the U-20 USA Team.

Head Coach Caitlin Cucchiella 3rd year at UAlbany Ohio State ‘09 - Goucher ‘11 Caitlin Cucchiella enters her third year as head women’s soccer coach at UAlbany, returning to the Capital District to lead the Great Danes. 2014 saw a strong turnaround for UAlbany under Coach Cucchiella as the Great Danes improved their win total from two to seven and their undefeated games total from three to 12. The team, which earned program records with 35 goals, 32 assists and 102 points, finished 7-9-5 overall and 4-2-1 in the America East for a fourth place finish after being predicted in the preseason poll to finish eighth. UAlbany defeated 5-seed Maine 2-0 in the America East quarterfinals to earn a semifinal berth. Vivian Vega was named America East Rookie of the Year after earning 22 points, with she and Alexa Schneider earning All-Conference First Team honors, only the second season that the program earned two First Team players. Shelby Belak and Caitlyn Paltsios each earned All-Conference Second Team status while Vega and Kiana Rugar were placed on the All-Rookie Team. Although her first year at UAlbany was a challenge on the field, the team earned an National Soccer Coaches Assocation of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for achieving over a 3.0 GPA in the classroom from the 2012-13 season. Freshman Alexa Schneider was chosen as a member of the America East All-Rookie Team. She previously was the first full-time Head Coach at the Sage Colleges, leading the Gators to a 4-4-1 Skyline Conference record and conference tournament participation. Prior to Sage, she was the first assistant coach at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland for three years. Collegiately, Cucchiella was a scholarshiped student-athlete at the Ohio State University from 2005-09, playing as a forward and center midfielder. She ranked 13th all-time in career assists at the time of her graduation. She was an NSCAA Academic All-America and four-time Ohio State University ScholarAthlete award recipient, also being a two-time All-Big Ten Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Cucchiella completed her US Soccer Federation National “A” License requirements in 2013. The National “A” license is the highest level coaching license awarded in the United States. In 2010, she completed her National “C” course and she was chosen as the recipient of the US Soccer Federation “Bob McNulty Award,” given to the coach who best exemplifies the performance, attitude, and devotion sought by the USSF at its National “C” License School. At the time of her hiring at UAlbany, Cucchiella stated: “I have always wanted to be a Division I head coach. To be given the opportunity to take on the responsibility as head coach for the University at Albany is a great privilege and honor,” said Colfer. She brings to UAlbany a unique skill set and relentless pursuit of achievement, which will be the foundation for student-athlete success on the field and in the classroom. Her own youth experiences and reputation locally will be a

great asset to help build the Great Dane program. A two-time NSCAA/Adidas All-American at Colonie High School (2003, 2004) in the Capital District, she was a member of the Region 1 (Eastern US) Olympic Development Program (ODP) from 2000 – 2005. During this time, ODP selected her to play in Europe twice. She played in Spain and Portugal in 2003 and later represented “Team USA” at an under 17 international tournament in Castle Bar, Ireland in 2004. She was also selected to attend a US national team event at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California in 2005.

On Premier teams, she played in six consecutive state cup finals, winning three state cup championships, one in Connecticut and two in New York, on three different teams. She continued her playing career with the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) and served as the team captain for the 2006 and 2007 “Adirondack Lynx,” which garnered the Northeast Division Championship title in 2006. In 2011, she led the Baltimore, Maryland “ASA Chesapeake Charge” to the Region 1 Championship. She was also a two-time bronze medalist in the Empire State Games as a member of both the Adirondack 2004 Scholastic Girls and 2008 Open Woman’s soccer teams. Cucchiella earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Human development and Family science from The Ohio State University in 2009, and attained a Master of Education degree in Athletic Program Leadership and Administration from Goucher College in 2011. She lives with her husband, Powell, in the Capital District.

Associate Head Coach Nick Bochette 3rd year at UAlbany - RPI ‘06

Bochette was appointed to the post of assistant coach in 2013. He enters his second season as an assistant under Caitlin Cucchiella. Prior to UAlbany, Bochette was a men’s soccer assistant coach with a focus on goalkeepers at RPI. The Engineers made three NCAA Division III appearances in 2008, 2009 and 2012 under Bochette’s guidance. He was a member of the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2012. Bochette coached a goalkeeper to All-Liberty League honors in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012. While coaching at RPI, Bochette was also a goalkeeping coach with the Adirondack Linx of the Women’s Professional Soccer League. He spent one season coaching at Hartwick College in 2008. Along with coaching college and professional levels, Bochette has coached numerous youth teams. He served as the goalkeeping director of the NY Elite Soccer Club and the First Touch Futbol Academy from 2010-11. He coached the U-14 boys Clifton Park Premier team from 2005-06. Bochette played professionally for the Wilmington Hammerheads from 2006-08. A 2006 graduate of RPI, Bochette transferred from Oneonta in 2004 to spend the rest of his collegiate career with the Engineers. He graduated with a degree in mathematics. He lives with his wife, Megan, and his newbourne daughter, Scarlet.

Assistant Coach Karen Gurnon 1st year at UAlbany - Connecticut ‘12

Former UConn standout Karen Gurnon has been hired as an assistant coach for the 2015 season. Gurnon spent last season as an assistant coach at Colgate University, focusing on the defense. She helped the Raiders record 11 shutouts en route to a 14-3-2 record and appearance in the Patriot League title game. Brenna Mason earned Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, the program’s first-ever player to earn that honor. Previous to Colgate, Gurnon spent a season at Durham University in the United Kingdom as a graduate assistant for the women’s football first team and an assistant coach for the second team. Gurnon holds NSCAA diplomas for Special Topics – Next Generation Coach and Level 1 Goalkeeper. She serves as the head coach of the U12 girls team of the Odyssey Sport Soccer Club as well as assisting the U16 girls and U10 boys teams. Gurnon played 83 games with 75 starts for the University of Connecticut, earning co-captain status in her final season of 2012. She helped UConn reach the Big East Tournament all four of her seasons and the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and 2010. She played the most minutes on the team in 2008 and 2012, earning All-Big East Academic Team in her time there. She graduated from UConn with a bachelor’s degree with a double major in psychology and anthropology in 2012.

Assistant Coach Mark Van Leuven 3rd year at UAlbany - Upstate Medical ‘95

Mark Van Leuven joined the women’s soccer coaching staff in August of 2013. He begins his second season as an assistant under head coach Caitlin Cucchiella. Van Leuven spent the last ten years as an assistant coach at the College of Saint Rose. The Golden Knights made appearances in the NCAA Division II semifinals in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012, and won the national title in 2011. He was a 2007 NSCAA Assistant Coach of the Year nominee. Over nine seasons with the Golden Knights, Van Leuven helped coach and recruit 10 NSCAA first team, seven NSCAA third team, and nine NSCAA Academic All-America selections. His 2004-2012 squads amassed 173 wins and just 22 losses. In addition to his work at Saint Rose, Van Leuven also coached with the Adirondack Lynx U-18 girls soccer club and the Adirondack Lynx of the Women’s Professional Soccer League. Prior to his appointment with the Golden Knights he was the head coach at Russell Sage College from 1999-2001. He gave the Gators their first winning season in seven years in 2000, posting a record of 11-5-1. Van Leuven was an All-SUNY conference soccer player in 1992 at SUNY Potsdam, as well as a varsity basketball player. He transferred in 1993 and earned his degree in physical therapy from Syracuse in 1995.
