WORKING WITH THE DEVELOPMENT FIRM ARTIMUS LOCATED IN HARLEM, THE STUDIO WAS PROVIDED A HUGE PARCEL OF LAND TO DESIGN AN AREA THAT WILL MAKE THE AREA OF EAST HARLEM MORE DESIREBLE. THE GOAL IS TO POPULATE THE AREA, BRINGING RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL SPACES. DUE TO LOCATION, THIS AREA HAS BEEN UNDERDEVELOPED FOR YEARS. WHAT CAN WE DO TO BRING MORE PEOPLE IN THE AREA? WHY NOT INTRODUCE A DEMOGRAPHIC IN NEED TO THE AREA?

ALSO, THE AMOUNT OF BUILDABLE SPACE IS MINIMAL AND THE CLIENTS WANT A VERY MODERN DESIGN WITH FLAT ROOFS.

FAMOUS RUINS ON SITE
A REINVENTING THE GRID USING THE ASSIGNED SITE AND IT’S PARAMETERS, A RADIAL GRID WAS CREATED USING THE TWO LONG DIAGONAL GIVEN AND THEN OFFSETTING THE SMALL DIAGONAL
B APPLYING THE GRID A HUGE CHALLENGE WITH THIS GRID WAS FITTING EVERYTHING INTO THE “BUILDABLE AREA”, BUT ACHIEVING THE SHAPE ALLOWED FOR MORE LIGHT EXPOSURE ON THE SOUTHERN FACADE
C MASSING ON THE GRID AFTER ACHIEVING AN INITIAL SHAPE, DIFFERENT MASSING WAS EXPLORED THROUGH MODELS, SHOWING DIFFERENT ITERATIONS ON WHAT COULD BE DONE
EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVE SNOWING TERRAIN REYKJAVIK, ICELAND
A ROOF DRAINAGE SYSTEM SINCE THE CLIENT REQUESTED A FLAT ROOF, ELIMINATING SNOWFALL BECAME A HUGE NECESSITY. WITH A HEATED SLANTED ROOF, MELTED SNOW IS COLLECTED AND STORED
B NATURAL SUNLIGHT BEING IN A FRIGID CLIMATE, COLLECING AS MUCH SUNLIGHT AS POSSIBLE IS A NECCESITY. THE BUILDING IS ORIENTED TO COLLECT NATURAL SUNLIGHT IN THE PUBLIC/WORKSPACE.
C COMPACT MASSING WHEN DESIGNING IN THIS CLIMATE, YOU WANT THE LEAST AMOUNT OF SURFACE AREA EXPOSED, HENCE CREATING A VERY COMPACT BUILDING. ALL PUBLIC AND PRICATE AREAS HUG THE INNER CORE.
SITE PLAN
A OUTSIDE SPACE DIRECTLY OUTSIDE THE ENTRANCE SITS A BEAUTIFUL SITING AREA FOR WHEN THE WWATHER IS DECENT. ALSO, THE SITE SITS ON HISTORICAL RUINS THAT CAN’T BETOUCHED BY THE BUILDING, BUT RESIDENTS CAN INTERACT WITH THEM.
B SITE ACCESS ALTHOUGH THE SITE IS PLACE IN THE MIDDLE OF A FOREST, THEIR IS A DIRECT DRIVEWAY AND CARPORT FOR RESIDENTS, AS WELL AS A WALKING PATH TO THE FOREST BEYOND.

TRACKING HEAD MOVEMENTS BEING THAT THE “HEAD” IS THE CONTROL SYSTEM OF THE BODY, TRACKING ITS MOVEMENT WAS VITAL IN CREATING THE FLOOR PLAN SHAPE.
STEP UP: CHANGE IN ELEVATION CHANGING THE ELEVATION ON REAL TIME CREATES A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE . IF THE HEIGHT OF A SPACE IS 12’ HIGH, AND YOUR FOOT ELEVATION CHANGES THROUGHOUT, THAT CREATES DIFFERENT LEVELS OF INTAMCYY THROUGHOUT
TRACKING HAND MOVEMENTS TRACKING HEAD MOVEMENTS
WHEN STROLLING, YOUR HAND MOVEMENTS ARE A MAJOR COMPONENET. THEY OPEN AND MEET THROUGHOUT DIFFERENT
THE DYNAMIC KICK THE “DYNAMIC KICK” IS THE LAST MOVEMENT THROUGHOUT THE STROLL. THIS IS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF THE PIECE, AND REPRESENTS THE AFRICAN CULTURE BEHIND STROLLING AND STEP DANCING.

SECTION A-A
THE ACTUAL SHAPE OF THE PAVILION IS A DIRECT TRANSLATION OF THE DYNAMIC KICK THAT HAPPENS IN THE END OF THE STEP ROUTINE. THE KICK IS MAPPED AND THEN SPLIT INTO SEGMENTS DIRECTLY CORRELATING TO THE SIZE OF EACH FREEZE FRAME PER SECOND.
LAY DOWN
USERS OF THE PAVILION HAVE THE OPTION TO LAY DOWN FOR RELAXATION. THIS SMALL BED IS LOCATED IN THE REAR OF THE PAVILION, AWAY FROM CIRCULATION AND ACTIVITY
SIT DOWN
LIKE ANY PAVILION, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO HAVE A PLACE TO SIT. THROUGHOUT THE PAVILION THERE ARE MANY PLACES TO SIT AND TALK OR ENJOY A NICE NEW BOOK
STAND UP
THE PAVILION ALSO ACTS AS A TRANSITION SPACE. IT IS LARGE ENOUGH TO WALK THROUGH AND CAN ACT AS A MONUMENTAL SPACE FOR PEOPLE TO MEET UP.

CREATING COMMUNITY
RECREATION
WHAT IS COMMUNAL GARDENING? COMMUNAL GARDENING IS CREATING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY THROUGH GARDENING, AGRICULTURE AND HORTICULTURE. THE COMMUNITY UNITES TO CREATE A COHESIVE SUSTAINABLE BUILDING.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS THROUGH COMMUNAL GARDENING, THE OVERALL BUILDING BECOMES A HUGE FARMERS MARKET. FAMILIES PRODUCE THEIR OWN CROPS FOR CONSUMPTION, AND ALSO EDUCATES THEIR KIDS ON HEALTHY LIVING HABITS.
HOW DOES IT IMPACT THE ENVIORNMENT WHEN BUILDING A NEW STRUCTURE, WE ESSENTIALLY TAKE AWAY FROM THE ENVIORNMENT. ONCE YOU INCORPORATE HORTICULTURE/AGRICULTURE INTO THE STRUCTURE, YOU REPLACE THE ENVIORNMENT THAT WAS TAKEN AWAY
WHY IS THIS RIGHT FOR STAPLETON STAPLETON IS STRUGGLING FOR AN IDENTITY, SO WHY NOT IMPLEMENT SUSTAINABLE FORMS OF LIVING? CREATING AN URBAN GARDEN CAN’T PROMPT MORE OF THEM TO
