We also lovingly look upon the return of fortifieds. We enjoy highlighting the outstanding fortified holdings around Australia, which are often priced spectacularly lower than their world class quality and reviews suggest they should. The fondness for these wines among those who try them means our special feature returns them to the prominence they truly deserve. Other highlights in this edition include a focus on Pinot Noir, part 3 of the commendable ‘First Families of Wine’ initiative with McWilliams and Tahbilk, a look at the magnificent Margaret River wine region including iconic producer Cape Mentelle, the latest Gentlemen’s Agreement incarnation, our Cellar Release offering, as well as a special focus on Italy, including Tuscan masters Carpineto. Finally, should you wish to ‘try-before-you-buy’ as the adage goes, or simply taste some great wines featured in this Guide, we invite you to join us at your local Dan Murphy’s for our complimentary tastings Friday between 3 - 8pm and Saturday between 12 - 6pm throughout July*. PETER NIXON has over 21 years of experience in the wine industry, including local and international wine show-judging, UK and Australian wine retail, restaurant wine list design, staff training and a tertiary background in wine marketing and commercial cookery. Now with Dan Murphy’s, he is working with the Fine Wine Team to continue to enhance our position as Australia’s best Fine Wine retailer. RICHARD MOORE’s wine career started at 17 as a cellar hand in Western Australia, working his way up to winemaker. After studying Wine Science at Charles Sturt University, Richard spent a vintage at Domaine Chandon where he was introduced to Dan Murphy’s, and he’s been with us ever since, starting as a Fine Wine Manager and then moving into the role of Fine Wine Specialist. TONY TITHERIDGE has embarked upon an enthusiastic learning and cellar-building period which began during the 1980s and continues today. Tony is in his 14th year among the Dan Murphy’s Wine Team and has worked at almost as many stores. Tony was highly regarded for his palate and wine knowledge by Mr Murphy himself and continues to make an invaluable contribution to the selection process today. Involved in wine retailing since the mid-70s, GARY BRAIDNER’s career has paralleled the burgeoning modern era of Australian wine. He has travelled to all of Australia’s major viticultural areas, as well as Italy, Germany and France in the relentless pursuit of wine knowledge. Gary has been a part of the Dan Murphy’s Wine Panel since 1993 and now fills the role of Fine Wine Specialist. Growing up in a household where mum was a food writer inevitably meant wine was part of STEVEN CREBER’s formative years. And more often than not the bottle was one of Dan Murphy’s Vintage Club “binnings” – today’s cleanskins. After studying Wine Science at Riverina College he worked in winemaking and viticulture in the Yarra Valley, Sunraysia, Eden Valley and Coonawarra regions before joining Dan Murphy’s in 1983.
In this edition Andrew Caillard MW shares his passion for fortified wine. Andrew Caillard is a Master of Wine and veteran wine auctioneer with Langton’s, Australia’s leading Auction House and publisher of the highly influential Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine. He is a recognised authority on Australian wine, and well travelled through the classic wine regions of the world; he is a passionate advocate for the Australian wine industry including, as we see in this edition, Australia’s worldclass fortified wines. Widely published, including a regular column in Australia’s Gourmet Traveller Wine, Andrew is also the author of the classic collectors bible Penfolds: The Rewards of Patience and a co-author of A Taste of the World of Wine - an academic text for first year university students, as well as an occasional freelance writer, wine judge and panellist, charity auctioneer and a part-time painter.

Rich, Robust Reds Around the world Australian wine has become synonymous with big, gutsy reds. These are the wines for which we are famous and much loved. Even many of our so-called cool-climate reds look positively gargantuan when positioned directly against their international counterparts. Whilst some would argue that all too many of our wines have become overly big and alcoholic over the last decade, encouraged perhaps by the high 90+ scores attributed by mega-influential US wine critic Robert Parker Jr., others just enjoy these wines for their sheer intensity and power – wines that some jokingly suggest require ‘a knife and a fork to eat’. In this section we feature a range of truly outstanding Australian red wines. From the biggest Shiraz styles of the Barossa to the more structured Cabernet styles of Coonawarra, here are the wine styles that have earnt Australia a place amongst the world’s greatest wine producing nations.

If you asked most winemakers around the world today where the finest examples of Pinot Noir were made, almost resoundingly the response would be the Burgundy region of France, the original home of this variety. Though Burgundy is unlikely to ever lose its reputation as the ‘Prince of Pinot’, built upon hundreds of years of winemaking experience and site selection, over the last 30 years we have seen impressive interpretations produced globally, as vines have matured and winemakers have come to terms with this notoriously fickle variety. While some international critics may cite Central Otago in New Zealand as being the most convincing Pinot Noir region outside of Burgundy, other New Zealand regions such as Martinborough and Waipara, as well as Australian regions such as the Mornington Peninsula, Geelong, Gippsland, Macedon, Yarra Valley and Tasmania could equally claim this title. Here we feature some of the strongest and best-value Australian and New Zealand options available today.

From Pioneer to Perfection
Margaret River
The West’s best? In only 30 years the Margaret River region has gone from a sleepy village inhabited by local dairy farmers and dedicated surfers to a thriving cultural hub, attracting some 500,000 visitors every year. Most of this growth can be attributed to the countless wineries that have spilled across the district since Dr John Gladstone of the University of WA highlighted its suitability to growing vines. Bounded by ocean on three sides, Margaret River enjoys climatic conditions that are often compared to those of Bordeaux. The unusually temperate climate throughout the ripening season and the rain-free days of the growing months ensure consistently high quality fruit of intense flavour. Margaret River’s reputation was built on Cabernet Sauvignon, a variety that continues to thrive and surpass expectation with every vintage, but it’s also known for its voluptuous Chardonnay and zesty Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends. While Shiraz has also been grown in the area for a number of years, it has only recently started to come into its own and begun to receive recognition.
To find out more about Margaret River visit: · margaretriverwine.org.au for winery details · margaretriver.com for regional tourism information · rayjordanwineguide.com.au for West Australia’s leading wine authority
Established in 1970, Cape Mentelle is a pioneer and leading winery of the remarkable Margaret River wine region. Over the last 40 years Cape Mentelle has consistently produced some of the region’s best wines having perfected the blending of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon now synonymous with Margaret River, as well as establishing the region’s reputation for Cabernet Sauvignon back in the early 80s. In recent years under the guidance of winemaker Robert Mann, Cape Mentelle has continued to excel with an increasing reputation for elegant Chardonnay and fine Shiraz. This reputation has been cemented with a string of Gold medals and an incredible five trophies for the 2007 Shiraz in the last twelve months.

AUSTRALIA’S FIRST FAMILIES OF WINE (Part 3)
Six generations of quality
150 years of winemaking history
The McWilliam’s winemaking philosophy runs parallel to its history and follows a family creed of quality, site selection and minimal winemaking intervention, handed down over six generations. In the 1930s, the McWilliam family became involved with the celebrated Mount Pleasant Estate in the Hunter Valley, a winery founded by one of Australia’s greatest winemakers and great friend to Dan Murphy himself, Maurice O’Shea.

Established in 1860, Tahbilk is one of Australia’s most beautiful and historic wineries. Located in the Nagambie Lakes region of central Victoria, it is the enviable home to the largest single planting and oldest Marsanne vines in the world, a Shiraz block planted in 1860 and five generations of Purbrick family ownership since 1925; making it the oldest family-owned winery in Victoria. Tahbilk is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2010 and invites you to join them for this special occasion in Australian wine history.

The third instalment of our series looks at Australia’s First Families of Wine, a collective of 12 family-owned wineries that highlight the characters that are the foundation of the Australian wine industry. Australia’s First Families of Wine represent more than 5,500 hectares of vineyards, over one billion dollars of sales and over 1,200 years of combined winemaking experience, demonstrating both here at home and to the world that our spirit of winemaking is alive and well.

‘People will still be talking about this wine twenty years after this book is landfill. It’s both the (humbling) truth and the glory of wine...the flavours go on and on, and the combination of history and the pure tastes of it virtually guarantee that it will be glorious when it’s fully mature. It doesn’t come cheap, and yet it’s obvious that this wine is a great gift to the wine-loving community.’

If you like savvy, you’ll love…
Whites With Warmth
Every white wine lover knows that their love doesn’t abate with the changing of the seasons. Rather than relying on white wine to act primarily as a refreshment, winter brings about the ideal opportunity to enjoy whites of character, to really look into the bottle and savour what it is in each glass that is so distinctly divine! Whether it is full flavoured richness or a restrained complex delicacy you seek, there are now more fantastic options to ignite your interest and passions than ever before.

Historically seen as something of a workhorse both in its original home of France as well as in Australia, South Australia’s Primo Estate has long championed the Colombard variety locally and continues to set the benchmark with its crisply textured, bright acidity and lively tropical flavours.
The rise in popularity of Pinot Gris in Australia cannot be denied. Originally from France this grape is either harvested early to retain acids and freshness or allowed to further develop for a richer, oilier profile. The best wines are valued for their textural structure and complex food friendliness.

People in the wine industry often ask the question, “what will be the next big thing after Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc?” If you were to look at the US market, you might be tempted to think it could be Pinot Grigio, with this variety hugely popular there. Others suggest that we might even see a diversification of consumer preference over a number of varieties – the only constant being freshness, intense flavour and minimal oak. In the interests of balance and choice, here are a number of different wine styles that we believe are all contenders to wear the crown of the “next big thing”.

THE NOBLE ART OF BLENDING HRB: Hardys Regional Blend
Almost 150 years ago, Thomas Hardy blended his first multi-regional wine, taking a parcel of grapes from the Adelaide Hills and blending it with grapes from the Southern Districts. Thomas did this because he believed that blending enhanced the characters and qualities of each of its components. So began the rich heritage of HRB - Hardys Regional Blend, with each new blend given a unique code starting from A001. The last wine blend code was the 1989 Siegersdorf Riesling with D635.

With every Gentlemen’s Agreement wine comes the confidence that collectively, we have captured a gem that will provide a very high quality, unique experience at a superb price. It is only with this conviction that both parties will then sign the label, and continue the tradition of sourcing limited fine wines directly from the vineyard.
Identified over 120 years ago for its “terra rossa” red soils over limestone, Coonawarra has become world famous as ideal wine growing terroir for plump Australian styled Cabernet Sauvignon. For some time now we have watched over this tiny quantity of exceptionally concentrated 2006 Coonawarra Cabernet from twenty year old vines, which Kym has deftly crafted with all his experience coming to the fore. With all the hallmarks of the high priced flagship wines of the region, this rare opportunity is perhaps our finest yet. Availability to customers will strongly depend on our ability to stop our staff from buying all of it.

Forming partnerships with outstanding winemakers for individual wines is an age old tradition, and one that brings about some of the greatest limited release opportunities for wine lovers. The very foundation of Gentlemen’s Agreement lies in this tradition.
Gentlemen’s Agreement is proof indeed that there is still a place for these partnerships to honour the time and patience required to tend these wines through bottling, and onwards, until they are eventually released.
The release of the new HRB range in 2009 celebrates the Australian tradition of multi-regional blending, bringing together the finest parcels of fruit from prestige regions across Australia to produce outstanding and complex wines.

KYM TOLLEY: Our latest Agreement
A highlight of the Dan Murphy’s Wine Panel role is to identify small parcels of great wines from iconic producers and work with them to create a true expression of wine and winemaker.
Generations of grape growing has identified the most sublime combinations of a grape variety matched to a region, and Australia’s diverse terroir mean that some varieties have a number of ideal homes. Further combining these regions allows a variety to bring its best character traits from each vineyard together and join forces in the one bottle.

Carpineto: Grandi Vini di Toscana; great wine of Tuscany
With an estimated 2000-plus indigenous grape varieties planted across Italy in a diverse range of microclimates, this historyrich wine nation produces a myriad of wine styles, from sensational value offerings to some of the world’s most expensive single estate wines. Here we include a snapshot of those varieties available in our extensive range sourced from five of Italy’s twenty-plus major wine regions.
TRENTINO-ALTO ADIGE
Carpineto is a family-owned and managed winery founded in 1967 by adopted Tuscan Giovanni Sacchet, who later went on to win the International Wine Challenge Competition (IWSC) Winemaker of the Year for 1994, and Antonio Zaccheo, the latest in a long line of Zaccheo winemakers of Tuscany. From the outset Antonio and Giovanni’s dream was to produce world-class Chianti Classico - a brave departure from the 1960s era when the local industry was focused on producing high-volume Chianti sold in the familiar ‘fiasco’ (straw basket encased bottle). They have since proceeded to create an international reputation for developing a consistent, elegant, approachable, award-winning range, from the finest single-vineyard wines to the incredible value Super-Tuscan IGT ‘Dogajolo’ range.

Zonin Nero d’Avola Merlot 2007 ‘Zonin never fail to impress in the quality – value ratio stakes. Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s most important grape often compared to new world Shiraz, produces velvety, plummy, peppery wines of great appeal.‘

The re-birth of cool.
Australia has an incredible fortified wine tradition that goes back to the early 1800s. Early colonists from England, brought up on Port and Sherry at home, found the climate entirely suitable to the production of fortified wine styles. Captain John Macarthur, who established Camden Park near Sydney, started making port-style wine in 1824. By the 1860s, port, sherry, muscats, tokays and madieras accounted for around 80% of wine production in Australia. It was only after World War Two and the influx of European immigrants that consumption patterns profoundly changed. Indeed the origins of Penfolds red table wines, including Grange, are steeped in a fortified wine culture. Although the contemporary market is small, Australia makes some of the most interesting and beautiful fortified wines in the world, often eclipsing their European counterparts. The Seppeltsfield Centenary Para Liqueur Vintage Tawnies, released after one hundred years of barrel maturation, are amongst the most unique of all wine experiences. Andrew Caillard, MW
Australia’s fortified pioneers
You simply cannot discuss fortified wine in Australia without highlighting the contribution of Seppeltsfield, the country’s preeminent fortified producer. Seppeltsfield is considered by many as the spiritual home (pardon the pun) of the fortified wine industry and a trip to the rich soils and palm tree lined entrance of the estate itself is considered somewhat of a ‘Mecca’ for enthusiasts.
first Seppeltfield’s vintage was soon produced and by 1867
The Seppeltsfield story began with Joseph Ernst Seppelt, a merchant who migrated to Australia with his family in 1849, from what is now Poland. Settling in the Barossa Valley in 1851, the
wine industry and a vision to bring Seppeltsfield Village back

Like the ’51 Grange, like a Streeton painting, a Melba recording, a Bradman bat, or a Lawson short story it’s part of the Australian ethos. A true icon. Sydney Morning Herald Sep 24th 2002, Huon Hooke Seppeltsfield Para 100YO Tawny 375mL Whether the rating is from James Halliday, Robert Parker Jr, Jancis Robinson or any other internationally acclaimed critic, the 100% scores for Seppelt 100 Year Old Para Liqueur Vintage Tawny continue from around the world. The great wine names of the world such as Chateau Margaux, Chateau d’Yquem, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or Krug Clos du Mesnil cannot match the awe-inspiring consistency with which 100YO Para commands the rarest score of all. With complexity one could write a book about, the 1909 is plum, spice, pickled walnuts, plum pudding, treacle. Jaw dropping concentration and immortal length. Wow!

These are impeccably made and of incredibly high-quality, as a range pursuing a vibrant flavour richness that is utterly addictive and leaves us delving back into the glass over and over again.
A huge leap in age of 10-15 years average from the Numbers Range, and a noticeable step up in density. It is nearly impossible to fathom how this quality gets to the market place at these prices.
A minimum average age of 20 years seats the Rare Range near the pinnacle of possible concentration and richness. Mouth filling and attention grabbing, these wines are a most emphatic quality statement.

The Spanish equivalent of our luscious fortified Muscats and Tokays is Pedro Ximénez (PX). No one forgets their first Pedro Ximénez, a dessert wine from the Jerez region made by drying the grapes under the hot Spanish sun. This process concentrates the sweetness, before the wines are then fortified and aged in barrels. These are gradually topped up over some years to become a final masterpiece. An unparalleled combination with top quality vanilla ice cream. *Not available in all stores. Call 1300 72 33 88 or ask your Fine Wine Manager.

Islay
Made famous in 1880 when Robert Louis Stephenson hailed it as “The king ‘o’ drinks”, Talisker is the most awarded single malt in its class. Full bodied and golden, citrus and seawater nose, dried fruits and smoke with a warm peppery finish.
Lagavulin is a classic Islay malt. Deriving its character from Islay’s tough conditions and peaty environment, the unusually long fermentation, maturation and distillation delivers a full, intense, smoky experience. From one of Scotland’s “essential” distilleries, demand heavily exceeds supply.

When consuming a single malt, it’s best to taste the whisky first undiluted and at room temperature. Then a small amount of spring water should be added to enhance the bouquet, similar to the effect air has on red wine. While popular culture suggests that it is the correct serving method, the addition of ice will numb the taste receptors and limit the flavours of the whisky.

Like a fine wine, Scotch whisky can differ greatly from region to region, with flavours influenced by factors such as production techniques, weather, location and quality of the raw materials. The type of barrel, maturation time, distillation process and vatting can also impact the flavours that we eventually find in the bottle.

Deriving its name from the Gaelic for “Meeting Place”, Dalwhinnie Scotch Whisky offers an experience midway between the Lowland and Speyside styles. A gentle golden spirit with smoothness and depth, Dalwhinnie is also one of the highest distilleries in Scotland.
A complex Speyside malt from one of the region’s smaller distilleries, Cragganmore is produced in limited quantities. With a light to medium body and golden appearance, this single malt has herbs, flowers, honey and vanilla on the nose, a sweet wood smoke on the palate and a long, lightly smoked and sweet finish.
One of Scotland’s smallest distilleries, Oban is characterised by rich sweetness, oranges, lemons and pears, sea-salt and peaty smoke. Imagine a mouth full of late autumn fruits such as dried figs and honey-sweet spices, followed by a smoky malty dryness.
Bright, gold and smooth, Glenkinchie creates a whisky with a light, young character. After a sweet soft start, the flavour soon becomes flowery. The mid-palate is crisp before settling into a tight bundle of butter icing, lemon cheesecake and freesias with a dry and herbal finish.

Cascade Stout 375mL Bottles 5.8% ABV Beers with serious depth of flavour and complexity are enjoying a rapid growth in popularity, due in no small part to the greater diversity of styles now being made and consumed locally. Producers both large and small offer a kaleidoscope of different winter-friendly ales on a scale that leaves us spoilt for choice. “Old school” Stout has lately enjoyed a real freedom of expression, venturing more into roasted characters of nuttiness and bitter chocolate, while Porters and Dark Ales are showing off mocha, integrated brandy nuances, spices and a wider profile of malt features.
Deep and rich in colour, this Stout has a slightly nutty roasted flavour and chocolate characteristics, with a smooth and creamy body and a pleasantly bitter aftertaste. Traditionally paired with big meals and big flavours but bring on dessert!

Winter alone however, is not the sole excuse for the success of these beer styles – it’s their ability to be enjoyed with a meal, and how impressive they are when poured into a glass that really allows them to shine. May we enjoy many winter brews to come!

Richard Moore’s plan for the future The 2007 vintage in Margaret River was sensational and this is a great example of how good the Cabernet Sauvignon was. Classic bay leaf, cassis and cedar aromas lead into a velvety palate displaying rich black fruit and classy oak, all balanced by persistent, fine grained tannins. Perfect for a winter roast or a great buy for the cellar!

Steve Creber’s fireside favourite Winter for me is synonymous with open fires and Rutherglen fortifieds. Less appreciated than the region’s great Muscats, Tokay (made from the Muscadelle variety) can be just as beguiling. I’m a devotee of the Seppeltsfield fortifieds and this is a gem. Aside from the fact that this wine shares its name with my beloved wife, it is also one of the great wines of Australia. Being over five years of age upon release, this wine has taken on a lovely toasty complexity whilst still retaining its lemony fresh appeal, making it a worthy match for roast winter white meats and root vegetable soups. Sensational stuff.

Gary Braidner’s heart-warming Cabernet Sauvignon Leconfield never separate out their best fruit for a “Reserve” wine - all of the good stuff goes into this one. A gold medal at this year’s Sydney Wine Show tends to prove my point. The 2008 is deeply flavoured with ripe cassis fruit, black currant and choc-mint – stylish and long with lovely cedary notes. The highest quality crystal glassware should be as affordable as it is technologically superior, bringing it out of the cabinet of untouchable relics and onto the dinner table for use every day. The Dan Murphy’s Wine Panel use Schott Zwiesel for all our tastings, simply because it is the best stemware to identify superb wines worthy of featuring amongst our fine wine range. This is the range of glasses many of us use at home, whether to do justice to our finest old bottles or to bring out the surprising best in an everyday bargain. Make the most of your wine selections by using the glassware adopted by the Dan Murphy’s Wine Panel, and organisations like the Australian Sommeliers’ Association.
I believe that there is a lot of beauty in wines. Dan Murphy, May 1983
The passion and love for wine that was synonymous with Dan Murphy is today passed down to every staff member in every store. Because we’re proud of what we do, and the way we do it, when you visit Dan Murphy’s you’ll see that our enthusiasm is what makes us different from any other liquor retailer.
