Void House is a 1,000 Sqft home Built into the Cliffs of Moher along the Western coast of Ireland. Perched on the advent of Chaos, 500 feet above the ocean below, Void House straddles the boundaries between a private residence and a public monument. The Void House serves a dual purpose as landmark as well as a private residence. The Void House is comprised of various interweaving tunnels convening in a grand staircase cut into the jagged cliff face. The stair steps are staggered in depth, preventing visitors from seeing beyond the platform in front or behind them creating a heightened sense of depth. Situated above the stair is the home itself, accessed through a single, private tunnel. The Home possesses three levels, staggered in the same fashion as the grand staircase below it, allowing for varying levels of privacy between the bedroom, living, and bathroom spaces. Passing through the center of the house lies a glass channel, allowing for light to pass through. The glass channel creates a sundial effect around the solstices, and marks the home’s presence, enticing visitors to explore the tunnels and cliffside to find entry.

Conceived as a landform installation, Synthetic Morphology reflects the history of Chicago´s evolving lake-front emulating the artificially constructed nature of Burnham’s 1909 plan for the city of Chicago. Synthetic Morphology is intended to replace the existing McCormick Lakeside Center with the development ‘spilling’ over onto Northerly Island, creating a physical and cultural loop within the Museum Campus. The sprawling structure would allow for vast interiors capable of housing program that can adjust to the needs of the city. The exterior of the structure houses the roof walk, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to traverse the lake-shore and onto the island.

SYNTHETIC MORPHOLOGY

Activating the lake-shore and Northerly Island, Synthetic Morphology seeks to create a second hub of activity mirroring that of Navy Pier, an action reminiscent of Burnham’s vision for Chicago as well as a needed intervention in the Near South Side area of Chicago.

Located in the Retiro Park in the heart of Madrid, Path of Eden represents the creation of an elevated pathway to the top of the Retiro’s historical artificial mountain. This path allows for visitors to be able to walk among the trees. Using the interior of the walking path to create a habit for bioluminescent plants and insects, the path is naturally lit requiring zero energy to light it at night. The bioluminescent plants and insects draw curious visitors who might see it as they pass by. Three different pathway typologies allow users to gather on the walkway, observe the bioluminescent flora and fauna grown on the interior, or sit against and take in the views of the Retiro Park and the surrounding cityscape.

The Allerton Park Performance Pavilion is an outdoor performance space for musical and theatrical events. The design for this pavilion was to work with the natural contours of the site to create a large amphitheater space through the creation of an artificial hill. This ensured the site was able to give back as much of the area it took up. Reversing the contours of the existing site mirrored the natural context creating a balance between the natural and the built environment. Located near the pavilion lies a retreat space for visiting artists and writers wishing a quiet and calm space to inspire them. Built with the same language as the pavilion, the retreat cantilevers along a hill leaving the occupants level with the treetops of the surrounding forest.

The Oscillatory Market is set within the Eixample of Barcelona. The site itself is centrally located between numerous metro stops, bus lines, and essential thoroughfares such as the Gran Via. The market floor extend to the diagonals of the site, while the entrances are located on each face of the building. This facilitates circulation around the market as people filter through the area. The market is an open-air market, enclosed only by the lateral louvers that serve as a frame for the market. The louvers provide solar shading while also leading the users through the market. The louvers create a sense of solid form yet allow light and air to perforate the market.
