DBFA Botero Catalog 2018

Page 1

When I am sculpting, I forget I am a painter. And when I paint, I forget that I am a sculptor. Everything sorts itself out into periods. Some days, I feel like working in watercolor, or pastel, or oil paint, or bronze. But it's only after two or three weeks of immersion that I begin to be at ease with a medium. -Fernando Botero

About the Artist

FERNANDO

BOTERO F

ernando Botero was born in Colombia in 1932 in a town called MedellĂn, located in the heart of the Andes Mountains. As a youth, Botero attended a school for matadors for several years, but his true passion was in art. From Colombia, Botero would travel to Spain and France before settling down in Florence where he would repeatedly revisit the Italian Quattrocento masters, discovering techniques from a bygone era. The masters idolized plump women and men with curves because it was a sign they were healthy. He recognizes the necessity of paying homage to his artistic forefathers, by creating artwork that is sociologically sensitive to contemporary norms. Therefore these large human subjects are the centerpieces and any accompanying environs are secondary. What makes a great artist is not only their vision, but also their ability to participate in the great conversation. This requires

4

rigorous study of art history, observation of the cannon, and also the ability to contribute to it. Botero studied art history and was able to use contemporary elements and themes from his everyday existence to invent a truly innovative dimension. He is able to synthesize his own artistic vision by combining the world of Colombia with the aesthetics of the Italian masters therefore creating a distinctive world all his own. His imagined world is peopled with various characters from Medellín like bullfighters, prostitutes, street musicians, and contemporary Latin American life. He portrays the poverty and violence rampant in Columbiain somber images, typically satiric portrayals of Latin American presidents, first ladies, and government officials, perhaps hinting at the subjects’ inflated sense of their own importance. He playfully paints these large characters as approachable and intimate, despite their almost farcical appearance. In this way the viewer has an intimate view of these magnificent men and women all in a sensual ambiance filled with joy and color.

Botero first achieved international fame on the Champs-Elysees in Paris where he had a major, outdoor retrospective of some of his larger works. It proved to be a huge success and garnered him international press and patronage. His paintings, which boast a limited palette of ochre, cobalt and Prussian blue, are rare commodities sought after by avid art collectors. Botero has gained even more international prestige and fame with his sculptural work. His sculptures feature his signature corpulent men and women. The rotund figures not only demonstrate Botero’s ability to portray individuals or stereotypes of Medellín characters he may have known in his life, but also universalize the figures in the sculptures so that anyone can identify them and see their gracefulness. They portray a rare irony, because the rounded stomachs and undefined arms and legs are hardly the first things associated with grace, yet the paintings or sculptures, as seen by the viewer, are striking and elegant. There is something inviting and enchanting about these figures. The overwhelming

“roundness” of these characters, whether they are bronze sculptures, painted on canvas, or drawn onto paper have become a legend in art history. The women are feminine and the viewer is able to identify with the beauty of the female body, even in the unconventional and stout portrayal. For example, the sculpture, Ballerina Vestita addresses the complex social forces at play in society. This sculpture is a satirical take on the ballerina. Ballerinas are associated with agility, petite size and slimness. While this sculpture shows agility and flexibility, the ballerina has the shape of Botero’s characteristically rotund woman. Contemporary society continues to sanction anorexic looking women as iconic figures of beauty and uses them to endorse all products within fashion and design. He is a painter and sculptor who scoffs at new trends affecting the art world and continues to create obese but graceful women, thereby challenging, if not mocking popular Western culture. This is the sign of a living Master.

WorKs on PAPer

B

otero's works on paper have grown in demand over the last couple of years. They are prized because they display all the skills of a master artist like Botero, but they are smaller than the paintings and sculptures. The women retain their large frames with all the gracefulness of his paintings, but they are more approachable. The figures are fleshy yet innocenct. The works on paper rarely contain a background therefore the focus remains on the figures. In many cases the subjects appear to be floating in space with just a small outline of a shadow to give the works more structure and form. Critics have said that his works are amateurish but the subtle shadowing in these works on paper demonstrate how complex and brilliant they can be.

I believe it is very important that stylistic coherence should dominate the form of expression . . . Everything is rendered in the same fashion, therefore the whole work radiates a sense of unity, harmony, and coherence. That is what communicates its essential truth. -Fernando Botero

B

otero has fomented a unique style to his paintings. He is the rare artist who creates beautiful paintings that the most amateur of viewers can appreciate while still appealing to art connoisseurs and historians through his reverence for art history and subtle innuendos.

I paint only from imagination and memory. In my studio, all I have in front of me is a canvas no model, no object. -Fernando Botero

Whether he is painting classical scenes like still lifes or women in seductive poses, all figures take on his robust vision. Botero’s paintings pay homage to his European forefathers but in his own distinctive Latin American way. The large paintings demonstrate Botero’s mastery of the voluptuous. These fleshy figures are immediately recognizable as being spurred by the painter’s brush and hands of Botero. The figures in these paintings are so dominant and commanding, it seems that despite the detailed surroundings, they are strictly for the presence of these vivacious men and women.

ernando Botero rose to critical acclaim with his monumental sculptures that have overtaken public places in European, Asian and American parks and public spaces. The sculptures contain all the iconography that his fans have grown to love. It has been noted that Botero has an immediate connection with the subjects he paints and draws, and the sculptures also have this feeling of intimacy. Upon seeing them in public places people immediately gravitate to them. The smooth bronze beckons the viewer’s touch and provides the viewer with an immediate relationship.

If Botero the painter has created a world of memorable scenes in pictures of wisdom, the beauty of his sculptures belongs to another set of values. His sculptural representation reaches a different degree of beauty, an almost abstract one . . . Botero’s sculpture is a conclusion the artist has reached after going through a long process of artistic logic that began with drawing and painting. . . -Benjamin Villegas
