[right] makeshop and materials library The makeshop is a expansive, flexible space to allow for a variety of processes. LEAP Collaborative would use this area for mock-ups, the creation of scale models, and large company-wide presentations. Built-in shelving extends above to the materials library. This library would be a great resource for the design process. [left] plaza and building illuminated at night

Earth Curvature Rest Stop | Great Salt Lake Desert, UT | Fall 2015 | Wendell Burnette (Guest Professor)
[left] entry As one leaves their car, they move away from the roar of automobiles speeding past on the interstate. With each subsequent step, the interstate becomes less audible, and one is aware that their footsteps are the only sound to break the silence of the desert. Without any protection from the elements, this journey seems to endure forever. The beating sun or constant rainfall propels the visitor on a descent that will bring protection and rest. [right] site plan
reverie The most important space is the retreat. When one has cleansed and had something to drink they can pause to rest before returning to their automobile. This pause gives an opportunity for reverie. To sit and reflect and enjoy the silence of their own thoughts.
nocturne At night, the architecture takes a backseat again to the beauty of the night sky. Constellations and the milky way hang over an old man who is sweeping as the desert becomes silent to the scale of the greater universe.

DESERT IMMERSION

[left] transformation 01 create path from parking to desert 02 split path into major and minor 03 at juncture of paths, create space of pause 04 along major space, add supporting programs 05 embed water in spaces to provoke reflection 06 build out monolithic walls of concrete for silence 07 provide shade and shelter from brutality of desert
[above] desert immersion The visitor has the opportunity to continue a narrow path to emerge into the Great Salt Lake Desert. A journey on this path is their only chance to walk on the salt and mud flats. However, sometimes the desert is flooded and one must appreciate the vastness of the basin from a concrete viewing platform. This immersion is a prolonged process leading to silence and separation from the speed of their daily life. Slowing down to walk a great distance leads to an engagement with the landscape that cannot occur behind the wheel of an automobile.

exhibit of deep geologic time Time is the only measure of the forces that shaped the Great Salt Lake Desert. A landscape that seems so foreign requires a bit of explanation. In this case, the landscape is understood as a short moment within the vastness of deep geologictime. In a similar way to be humbled by the scale of the landscape, we are humbled by the grand scale of time. The exhibit is tied to a single line that describes the height of Lake Bonneville throughout history. Each concrete break line creates zones where one learns of the history that existed at that time. The visitor may learn of the grand glaciers or flora and fauna that once inhabited this seeminglybarren place. The information is etched onto translucent glass panels that are backlit for low light conditions.

construction 01 Initial site prep, begin pile driving. Install concrete batch plant on site.
construction 02 Once piles have been driven, excavation begins on site. Soil is removed from site by dump truck.
construction 03 Following excavation, concrete is poured against steel piles for interior walls. Concrete surfaces are sandblasted for smoother effect.
