During my three decades in suspension development, I’ve worked with the best motocross and mountain bike teams in the world, but I’ve never seen an R&D powerhouse like what we’ve assembled at Specialized. We attack the whole bike, from chassis to fork to rear shock, and tune everything to work together for one purpose. It’s through this holistic approach to development, which we call Total Suspension Integration, or TSI, that we craft the best possible bikes for speciﬁc types of riding.

OPTIMISED BUMP FORCE MANAGEMENT

FACT CARBON OR M5 ALLOY FRAMES

FSR linkage, front and rear spring rates and damping curves are created and tuned together for totally balanced and optimised performance where the rubber meets the dirt. This integrated development of all suspension components maximises control and traction.

By combining the right materials, whether it’s our high modulus FACT carbon or advanced M5 alloy, and one of several proprietary construction methods, we optimise the shape of each tube for the perfect blend of strength, stiffness and weight. We also carefully reﬁne the geometry of each bike to best serve the rider’s intended experience – from a stance tuned for XC Trail riding to Downhill or Competitive XC. Moreover, because we control the frame and fork interface, we can pioneer features like tapered steerer tubes and bearing/down tube alignment that minimise weight and maximise stiffness.

BRAIN TECHNOLOGY: IT KNOWS Pioneered by Specialized, Brain technology knows the difference between rider forces and bump forces. Our Future Shock forks and rear shocks, co-developed and manufactured by FOX Racing Shox, use Brain technology to immediately transition from firmly efficient in smooth terrain to fully active in rough terrain, boosting both efficiency and control.

We pioneered active, independent suspension over 15 years ago and have been reﬁning it ever since. Our FSR® technology delivers more control, comfort and efﬁciency than any other system by effectively decoupling chain and brake loads from the rear suspension.

CONTROL

COMFORT

Maximum traction means greater control. Since FSR suspension is independent of chain and brake loads, it’s active. Active means it’s free to compress and rebound over all types of terrain, which allows your tyres to maintain contact with the ground a greater percentage of the time. This, in turn, delivers the traction required for control.

Active suspension is free to absorb bump forces so your body doesn’t have to. Mitigating repetitive impacts increases an athlete’s endurance by reducing fatigue.

EFFICIENCY Since the drivetrain is independent of suspension, your pedal stroke is not affected. This allows you to maintain a smooth spin, which is critical to being an efﬁcient “motor”. Chain torque won’t engage the suspension, so all the effort you put into the pedals moves you forward, not up and down. Active suspension lets the rider seemingly ride “through” bumps, not “into” and “over” them. This means less redirection of mass and more maintained momentum.

Through design, engineering and testing, we analyse all the forces that affect FSR and follow their path through the bike. By tuning the suspension layout, we can control how the suspension behaves when all these loads are applied (e.g. pedalling or braking). The illustration (left) shows the loads applied during a pedal stroke. The goal is to make the resultant load go through the instant centre, which eliminates bobbing and gives the rider more efﬁciency.

WOMEN’S-SPECIFIC SADDLES

We create custom tubing and carbon lay-ups (by optimising tube shapes, dimensions and carbon placement) for all of our women’s mountain frames to make them lighter and smoother riding than over-built bikes for men. This makes our bikes climb and accelerate faster and also makes them more comfortable to ride.

Our suspension forks and rear shocks (minus the hardtails) use thresholds specifically tuned to suit female riders, so even the lightest riders will benefit from more comfort, control and efficiency.

Our women’s-speciﬁc saddles are the result of extensive research, testing and reﬁnement. We strategically tune saddle shape and foam density, optimise seam positioning and formulate anatomical cut-aways to relieve pressure on sensitive soft tissue and increase overall comfort.

FACT is an acronym that stands for Functional Advanced Composite Technology. It represents our holistic approach to working with composites. Like any project at Specialized, FACT starts with the needs of the rider, then we apply four critical disciplines to achieve the design targets that will best serve those rider needs: Engineering, Material Selection, Fabrication Process and Testing. ENGINEERING Aided with ProEngineer solid modelling software and Finite Element Analysis, our composites engineers optimise the tube shapes and diameters of each bike to deliver the best ride for the intended experience. Cases in point are the customised seatstays used on our Roubaix SL. Their carefully engineered shape (different for each Roubaix model and size), combined with Zertz vibration-absorbing inserts, help give the Roubaix its signature blend of compliance and stiffness for endurance riding.

Not all carbon ﬁbre is created equal. Some carbon has higher tensile strength properties – these are “stronger”. Some has superior elongation properties – these are “stiffer”.

Every FACT frame, fork or piece of equipment we create uses one of three reﬁned monocoque manufacturing methods. By honing these advanced fabrication methods, we can ensure maximum performance out of all our FACT bikes.

Thanks to our in-house test lab, we can elicit the most technologically advanced comparative data through a myriad of tests, including those for torsion, vertical compliance and bottom bracket stiffness, then compare revisions until we’ve optimised each frame. Outside of the lab, we test in the ﬁeld with pros, everyday riders and Specialized team members to ensure we have all the qualitative and quantitative data we need to launch the best bikes possible.

Since a frame is made up of over 100 pieces of carbon fibre, our engineers have the flexibility to create specific lay-ups for each bike that will yield the perfect combination of stiffness, compliance, strength and weight. By determining the appropriate materials selection for each family of bike (and even each bike size within that family) – whether it’s the super stiff Tarmac or more balanced Roubaix – we can optimise performance for any given experience.

Applied on our highest end road bikes, FACT IS (Integrated Structure) is our most optimised carbon construction method, capable of creating bikes with superior stiffness-to-weight ratios. FACT IS separates the frame into four small monocoque sections to carefully control the internal and external surface of the carbon and guarantee the most efﬁcient use of material.

There’s a reason Body Geometry shoe technology is better than the other guys. Because it’s rooted in science and medicine. We’ve been working with Dr. Andy Pruitt from the Boulder Centre for Sports Medicine for years to make sure that you get the maximum potential out of your power transfer. With scientiﬁcally and medically designed features like our Varus Wedge, Metatarsal Button and Longitudinal Arch Support, Body Geometry shoes and footbeds make the connection between body and bike more productive, more comfortable and less prone to injury.

VARUS WEDGE THE PROBLEM: Since the foot is naturally canted for walking and running (with the big toe higher than the little), that same angulation on a bike can cause rotational movement of the knee/shin/foot and cause the foot to collapse, which not only degrades efﬁciency, but creates knee pressure and strain.

THE SOLUTION: We engineer a Varus Wedge into the outsole of our BG shoes, giving the foot a 1.5mm angle to compensate for its natural tilt. This creates better alignment of the knee over the foot, boosting efﬁciency and comfort.

THE PROBLEM: Cyclists often experience “hot spots” or numbness in the forefoot while riding, due to the fact that a snug shoe can lead to the compression of nerves and arteries in between the metatarsals (long bones of the forefoot).

THE PROBLEM: Similar to its angulation, the foot’s arch is great for absorbing shock when walking or running, thanks to its natural ﬂex. But unless the arch is supported while on a bike, it can hinder pedaling efﬁciency and rob power on the downstroke.

THE SOLUTION: The Metatarsal Button in our BG shoes works against this problem by lifting and separating the metatarsals to eliminate related compression and discomfort.

Testing has proven that the pressure conventional saddles put on men’s pudendal nerves and arteries reduces penile blood flow within just a few minutes on the bike. Reduced blood flow has been linked to Erectile Dysfunction in numerous medical studies, but we can design around this problem. Through blood flow testing, we’ve found that cutting away a precise centre section of the saddle will greatly reduce penile pressure and prevent long-term damage. All of our men’s BG saddles have been tested and proven to provide a safe level of blood flow.

Female riders are subject to the same blood ﬂow issues as men, as well as direct pressure on their perineal regions, which can cause urinary and sexual dysfunction. Through pressure mapping at the Boulder Centre for Sports Medicine, we’ve designed BG women’s saddles with a central cut-away and beveled foam contours that measurably reduce unwanted pressure and improve blood ﬂow.

This warranty is void if the bicycle was not assembled by an authorised Specialized dealer in accordance with Specialized’s instructions and does not transfer to subsequent owners of the bicycle. This warranty does not apply to attachments and equipment which is unbranded or branded otherwise than with the Specialized brand, however suspension equipment which is branded otherwise than with the Specialized brand may have warranty coverage offered by the specific manufacturer. Please check in your owner’s manual pack for information regarding these warranties or check with your authorised Specialized dealer for details. ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS This Limited Warranty is made on new Specialized bicycles or framesets purchased from an authorised Specialized dealer. In order to exercise your rights under this limited warranty, the bicycle or frameset must be presented to an authorised Specialized dealer, together with a proof of purchase. Should this bicycle, frameset or any part be determined by Specialized to be covered by this warranty, it will be repaired or replaced, at Specialized’s sole option, which will be conclusive and binding. Under no circumstances does this limited warranty include the cost of travel or shipment to and from an authorised Specialized dealer. Such costs, if any, shall be borne by the owner. This limited warranty does not apply to normal wear and tear, nor to claimed defects, malfunctions or failures that result from abuse, neglect, improper assembly, improper maintenance, alteration, collision, crash or misuse. This bicycle or frameset has not been designed, engineered, distributed, manufactured, or retailed for uses in trick riding, ramp riding, jumping, aggressive riding, riding on severe terrain, riding in severe climates, riding with heavy loads, commercial activities, or any similar activities; such uses may damage the bicycle, can cause serious injury to the rider, and in all cases will void this warranty. USEFUL PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE Every Specialized bicycle and frameset has a useful product life cycle. The length of that useful product life cycle will vary with the construction and materials of the bicycle or frameset, the maintenance and care the bicycle or frameset receives over its useful product life cycle, and the type and amount of use the bicycle or frameset is subject to. Uses in competitive events, trick riding, ramp riding, jumping, aggressive riding, riding on severe terrain, riding in severe climates, riding with heavy loads, commercial activities and other types of non-standard use can dramatically shorten the useful product life cycle of a Specialized bicycle or frameset. Any one or a combination of these conditions may result in an unpredictable failure of a Specialized bicycle or frameset that would not be covered by this warranty. ALL SPECIALIZED BICYCLES AND FRAMESETS SHOULD BE PERIODICALLY CHECKED BY AN AUTHORISED SPECIALIZED DEALER for indicators of stress and/or potential failure, including cracks, deformation, corrosion, paint peeling, dents, and any other indicators of potential problems, inappropriate use, or abuse. These are important safety checks and very important to help prevent accidents, bodily injury to the rider and shortened useful product life cycle of a Specialized bicycle or frameset. THIS IS AN INTEGRATED AND FINAL STATEMENT OF SPECIALIZED’S LIMITED WARRANTY. SPECIALIZED DOES NOT AUTHORISE OR ALLOW ANYONE, INCLUDING ITS AUTHORISED DEALERS, TO EXTEND ANY OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, FOR SPECIALIZED. NO OTHER REPRESENTATION, AND NO STATEMENT OF ANYONE BUT SPECIALIZED, INCLUDING A DEMONSTRATION OF ANY KIND BY ANYONE SHALL CREATE ANY WARRANTY REGARDING THIS BICYCLE OR FRAMESET. ALL OF THE REMEDIES AVAILABLE TO THE OWNER ARE STATED HEREIN.
