AUTOBIOGRAPHY

M y name is David Carino, I was born on February 12, 1989 in Mexico City, Mexico. My

family is made up of my mother, father, kid sister, and kid brother. We immigrated to Sarasota Florida in 1996 when I was just 8 years young. We lived in a small 1 bedroom home which made the first couple of years living there difficult. When I was 10 I started to go to work with my mother cleaning condos which was when I was introduced to “high class” interior design. Every weekend we would clean a different variety of condos and I was amazed each time. I worked with my mom every weekend there for four years until going to work with my father. At this point he had started his own company, Carino Tree Service, which specialized in landscaping and tree removal services. We moved into a house out in the country with a big yard for the family company to keep all of the work trucks. Balancing school and working for the family company I never gave consideration about what I would do after high school. I had always assumed I would take over the business someday. During spring break I was working at a job site and had an accident, I had fallen off one of the trucks and broken my ankle. For the rest of spring break I was on bed rest and came to the realization that I wanted a change of career. When I graduated high school I was lost, I had no idea what job or area I wanted to study. I went to community college and took elective classes such as, photography, philosophy, accounting, until I found something I wanted to pursue.

When I was first introduced to the Art Institute of Tampa I was excited to find something I was passionate about. I started taking free hand drawing classes and at first it was discouraging as I wasn’t as talented as my classmates. That meant I just had to work twice as hard. While in school I came across the opportunity to remodel the bathroom at my house. As I started repainting and putting in the new sink I thought “why stop here?”. I gutted everything, I took down a wall, replaced shower doors, the toilet, lighting fixtures, and retiled the shower and wall. I enjoyed picking out the cabinets, the marble slab for my sink, and taking measurements. Everything about this project made me feel like I could actually make a career of interior design. Before school was to start my family and I took a vacation to NYC where we looked into the Art Institute. I had fallen in love with everything the city had to offer and had my credits transferred here. Two months later I was a “New Yorker” and enrolled in the Art Institute of New York City. Everyday I come to class excited to learn something new about this career I’m so passionate about. My goal is to one day design furniture and work in an eco friendly Interior Design firm.
