JEWELRY&FURNITURE
4559 BLVD. SAINT LAURENT
This project was for an infill site on Blvd. St.Laurent just north of Mont-Royal. The project called for the coexistence of both a jewelry studio and a furniture showroom. My initial observation was that the character of St-Laurent transforms on this block. The glassedin store fronts found north and south are less prevalent and instead you find porte-cachers, residential balconies, front yards etc. These new elements were studied in elevation, and out of it manifested a series of horizontal lines corresponding to their heights. This created a barcode visible on the front facade and was pulled through into the building. The notion of a jewel in a box was strong here and this was brought out in the design by having the jewelry studio as a faceted jewel-like object, surrounded by the boxy furniture showroom.

BIRRURUNG POOL
LAB ARCHITECTURE STUDIO
A proposal for the city of Melbourne for an internationally ground breaking project in urban ecology, sustainability, engineering, architecture, landscape and urban design in with Lab Architecture Studio. The proposal is to create a signature river pool and recreational amenity for Melburnians and Victorians, with enhanced liveability. It would be sited at Batman Park, which under this proposal would be renewed and re-invigorated through the creation of a sustainable filtered garden, wetlands and parkland. I was part of a design team of 8 for this project in 2010 at Lab in Melbourne.

MAKE IT RIGHT NEW ORLEANS
New Orleans is a major port city of the US, and due to the trade imbalance with Asia, there is a surplus of shipping containers. Keeping the project as cost efficient and sustainable as possible, we decided to use these ISO shipping containers; a prefabricated, modular, stackable, weather-resistant and transportable structure. This project consists of 2 rows of containers with a void in between, bridged by an asymmetrical roof. Seven 20’ containers are placed vertically to create a lofty space for the open plan living, dining, and kitchen space. The high-ceilings and clerestory windows aid in the chimney effect naturally ventilating the house. On the other side, three 20’ containers are laid on their side to create more intimate feeling rooms for the bedrooms and bathrooms. The house is all on one floor to keep with the New Orleans tradition of shotgun houses, and the two rows of containers are shifted to create space for large porches in the front and the rear.

A SHARED CRAFT
LYCEUM FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION
Penland School of Crafts runs on 3 core ideas; total immersion, close interaction with others, and the notion that generosity enhances education. These ideas of sharing and interaction led to the sacred geometry of the circle. At its center is the communal forge area with its chimneys converging together, and spiraling out of the roof. This open circular plan creates an environment that is ideal for dialogue, and cross-referencing of techniques and process. As a school of craft making, it was important to reveal the structure. As one passes through any of the openings in the shells, the life of the building is revealed as the soft form of the interior and exterior are contrasted with the hard and rigid steel skeleton.

FED SQUARE EAST MELBOURNE MASTERPLAN
Since the completion of the Federation Square project in 2002, there has been much speculation and numerous proposals for building over the railways on the site demarcated by the southern edge of Flinders Street, Russell Street extension, Batman Avenue and the northern edge of Birrarung Marr. The success (technically and socially) of Federation Square has paved the way for studies, workshops, reports and schemes that note the viability and plausibility of decking over the railways in this location and in developing various built options to occupy this “constructed site. A one-week design charette yeilded a very broadbased array of 11 or 12 options for the site. The divergent thematics of the options allowed for an expansive discussion and helped to uncover many issues that had not previously been visible or noted. Four options to be further elaborated came out of these discussions and were further developed during the proceeding month. Finally, after another meeting with the clients, the pavilions option was chosen to develop completely. I was part of a design team of 10 for this project in 2010 at Lab in Melbourne.

F1 / ASBESTOS QUEBEC ASBESTOS MINE RE-USE
The Jeffery Mine in Asbestos Quebec is no longer active leaving a large whole in the earth over a kilometer deep. This proposal seeks to reuse the many existing roads that circulate around this mine and turn it into a F1 racetrack. The mine will naturally fill with water as it is fed by many aquifers. The water being pumped out of the mine would circulate through a capillary irrigation system allowing vines to grow up the mine-walls acting as a means of capping the mine, as well as to dampen the sound of the cars. As F1 is funded primarily by advertisement, these vines could be grown in a controlled manner and be pruned to allow for F1 advertisement in the negative space.

ST. JOHN’S NFLD MASTERPLAN AND ARENA
The block between Lemarchant Rd. and Rickets Rd. currently houses Marie of All Angel’s church and 2 vacant, rotting buildings. This proposal re-programs this block demolishing these 2 buildings and replacing them with an arena, community center, library, mixed residential, and of course, urban agriculture and fish farming. The whole site is ecologically connected with a system of water reuse and compost aiding in sustainably feeding the residents of the community. The fish farm works in conjunction with a rain water harvesting system and living machine that uses compost from the urban agriculture and on-site inhabitants to create this closed loop system.

LE 2-22 ST CATHERINE QUARTIER DES SPECTACLES
The project called for a mixed-use building for a record label’s new head quarters and an exclusive Boutique Hotel. The contrast between these two inherently different programs to be fit under one roof was obvious. This contrast spawned the organization of the building by splitting the two programs into two separate bars with a 6 story sky-lit atrium in between. The hotel which opens to the city is the white, soft, glass bar, while the record label is a dark, muffled, acoustic bar. While the ground floor of the atrium belongs to the record label the volume of the atrium is shared by both programs. Overhanging pods provide comfortable seats for hotel tenants as well as a glass bottomed pool spanning across the 6th floor.

INTERIOR / IDENTITY / INDUSTRIAL / SIGNAGE
NORTH OF BROOKLYN
PIZZERIA / TORONTO / QUEEN W.
Restaurant owners Josh Spatz and Alex Potter saw a hole in Toronto’s pizza market. Both gourmet neapolitan pizza restaurants and cheap by-the-slice joints were booming, but nobody was doing the gourmet by the slice pizza, found all over in Brooklyn New York. The commission started with the logo, and moved through the entire restaurant identity, web, interior, signage, custom furniture, even as far the photos on the wall. They were looking for a ‘shabby chic’ aesthetic that would match the notion of having gourmet pizza by the slice. This was expressed in the material choices, namely; rusted tread plate, salvaged barn board, rough exposed concrete, gun metal, etc. With its location on the corner of Palmerston, the challenge was to attract street traffic from the busy Queen West. The lease included a long brick wall in between the restaurant and Queen W. that was used as a canvas to hold a 22’ long bulb sign that lights up the street and gives the restaurant a real street presence. The pizza needed to be the most important aspect. It was therefor critical to design a unique display that would put the pizza on a pedestal. A dynamic pizza display was poured directly into the counter and consists of 3 square pieces of beach wood cantilevering off of a steel pole that rotate around to reveal each pie.

NUVIEW WINDOWS VYNYL WINDOWS & DOORS
NuView is a division of Canadian Thermo Windows (CTW), a privately owned company that was established in Toronto in 1979. They are formed around the notion of innovation and responsible for the window industry’s most critical technological breakthroughs. CTW has been around for over 30 years and has an exceptionally innovative product. Unfortunately the marketing was still 30 years old. I was hired at the creation of the NuView division and was given the task of branding this division with a contemporary look for the architect, interior designer, custom builder and dealer. After creating all the marketing material including a 6 minute informational video (viewable at www. nuviewwindows.com) I was given the task to design a 10’x40’ booth on a very limited budget The booth was featured at Toronto’s Interior Design Show 2012, and Orlando’s International Builders show 2012. The response was immense. NuView had a huge amount of interest and have since picked one of the biggest window dealers in Ontario.

WINE LIST
LE RESTAURANT X0 | HOTEL ST JAMES
I was hired by XO to redesign their menus. They wanted a consistent look for their 6 menus and they wanted a design that was flexible and could be edited day to day as items got added and removed to the menus. The sample shown on the left is of the wine list, which was re-organized by country and region. Each section is headed by a graphic map showing the different regions with the capital in red as the reference point.

2012 CALENDAR HYDRO QUEBEC
Hydro Quebec hired me to deign the layout and graphics for their annual staff calendar. The calendar both exhibits travel photos chosen from a company wide competition as well as informs employees about company days. 3D plastic letters were rendered in different colors for each month. The main color from the photo chosen for that month was sampled and used.

The balcony at 279 Roy E. looks onto a courtyard with a neighboring balcony situated 4 meters directly across from it. The goal was to create a privacy screen that was aesthetically pleasing but was also functional. Inspired by Steven Holl’s store front for Art & Architecture in New York, I came up with the design of a perforated screen that opens up to create a usable table and chair.

CONTEMPLAY PAVILION MCGILL CAMPUS
The ContemPLAY pavilion is a combined steel and wood structure created by the McGill School of Architecture DRS (Directed Research Studio M.Arch) students as a capstone project for their final year. It is built in collaboration with F.A.R.M.M. The ContemPLAY pavilion is meant as a multigenerational artefact that gathers the ideas of contemplation and playing in a single clear gesture. As a socially sustainable public infrastructure that plays with the visual field through form and cladding, it questions the current trend in public space furniture and encroaches in the realm of the abstract sculpture or artefact. I had 3 winning renderings in a school wide competition held. As well as helping in the construction of the pavillion I took the photographs used for marketing purposes.
