1843 Bulls Eyes 30 reis black on greyish, used in combination with second issue (“Inclinados”) 60 reis black type 2 on cover (undated inside) to Parahybuna, tied by pre-stamp unframed MARIANNA in black, the ink of which has caused two areas of corrosion (one at right of 60r), seal removed from flap. An extremely rare mixed use of first and second issues on the same cover. With P. Meyer certificate 2013, discussed at pp 308-09 of Jucherts book, where the question of dating is mentioned, along with the typical ink corrosion associated with the Marianna postmark. Statues: Athlete in bronze performing the Olympic salute, made by Muller CH and signed by artist, 49cm tall, mounted on bronze plinth 17.5cm x 23.7cm, right arm shows cracking in the arm, an attractive showpiece

640

Note: In this Olympic salute, your right arm should be held out, slightly to the side, and pointing in an upward angle. Likewise, your palm should be out and your fingers touching. The Nazi salute is more or less performed the same way, except it is customary to hold your arm straight in front of you, instead of partially to the side. As you might imagine, the Olympic salute fell out of favour after WWII. Despite this, the International Olympic Committee hasn’t yet replaced it with a different salute, even if nobody would dare use it any more for fear of being misinterpreted.

THE FAMOUS BERLIN GAMES BRONZE STATUES

41240

An important pair of German bronze groups of Olympic Athletes, cast from models by Eberhard Encke, each group including two running athletes, one with two women, the other two men, both running in relay and passing a gilt-metal laurel branch and gilt-metal laurel wreath respectively to the partner behind. The female athletes are signed and dated ENCKENCI NEUBABELSBERG B ‘36 RG The male athletes are signed ENCK 1936 NEUBABELSBERG Each statue group is mounted on a yellow marble base with applied bronze inscription OLYMPIA-BERLIN-1936, circa 1930’s (82 x 77 cm) excluding the laurels Note: The present bronzes are casts of Eberhard Encke’s monumental marbles that stood at the entrance of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin (see photographs). They appear to be unique casts done by Encke either as a private commission resulting from popularity of the larger stone versions, or as presentation models executed for approval before undertaking the massive and costly task of carving the marble versions. Little is recorded about this powerful sculptor in the available literature, though he may be the son of the sculptor Erdmann Encke (1843-1896), who moved to Neubablesberg in 1892 (Ethos un Pathos. op. cit.), where these bronzes were designed or cast according to the inscription. The fine casting reveals with consummate success the force of the running athletes, adding a chromatic richness to the play of the muscles, which would have been partly lost in the translation into stone. This visual richness is further enhanced by the gilt laurels and the coloured marble bases, enlivening the forward motion and competitive tension of the sculpted athletes.

A unique opportunity to acquire a piece of Olympic history Closest Olympic swimming finish in history - 400-meter Individual Medley, 1972 Gunnar Larsson and Tim McKee of the U.S. were both credited with the Olympic record, but Larsson was declared the winner by two thousandths of a second, 4:31.981 to 4:31.983. As a result of this race, the rules were changed to declare a dead heat in any swimming contest in which the swimmers were tied to hundredths of a second, although this rule was later changed.

Biography Carl Gunnar Larsson (born 12 May 1951) is a former swimmer from Sweden. He won the 400 metre individual medley event at the 1972 Summer Olympics by two one-thousandths (0.002) of a second over American Tim McKee, breaking the Olympic record. The controversy over the accuracy of such timing was the reason the international swimming rules were subsequently changed, and today swimming times are measured in hundredths of a second. He also won the 200 metre individual medley event at the same Olympic Games, setting the new world record. Two years earlier, Larsson received the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal due to his swimming at the 1970 European championships where he won three gold (200 metre medley, 400 metre medley and 400 metre freestyle) and one silver (200 m freestyle). A year later, 1973, Larsson won the 200 metre individual medley at the first official FINA World Championships in Belgrade.

During his career, Larsson set three world and eight European records. Together with Arne Borg he is considered as Sweden’s greatest swimmer of all time. In 1979, he was inducted in the International Swimming Hall of Fame. The Medal On the obverse, the traditional goddess of victory, holding a palm in her left hand and a winner’s crown in her right. A design used since the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, created by Florentine artist Giuseppe Cassioli (ITA 1865-1942) and chosen after a competition organised by the International Olympic Committee in 1921. For these Games, the figure of victory is accompanied by the specific inscription: “XX. Olympiade München 1972”. On the reverse, Castor and Pollux, the twin sons of Zeus and Léda, the patrons of sports competitions and friendship, represented by two naked youths. The Organising Committee for the 1972 Games in Munich broke new ground by having a different reverse which was designed by a Bauhaus representative.
