In Memory of Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Flaherty St. Benedictâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church Ladd, Illinois 1893-2010

FLAHERTY – O’FLAHERTY The Flaherty Family were one of the Celtic clans of the Hy Briuin race, i.e., the families descended from Bryan, King of Connacht. This Bryan was an elder brother of Niall of the Nine Hostages, the famous 4th Century king of Ireland, who first brought St. Patrick to Ireland as a boy slave. A 10th century chieftain of the clan became known as “Flaithbheartach” which means “bright ruler”. Later in the 11th century, when surnames came into use, this sobriquet became the family name. O’Flaherty means “the descendant of the bright ruler”. In Gaelic it is written, O’Flaithbheartaigh. In pre-Norman days, the O’Flahertys were chiefs of the Muntermorroghoe, a district east of Lough Corrib in the barony of Clare, County Galway. In the 13th century after many bitter struggles they were forced westward by mail clad legions of the Burkes, the Martins, and other invading Normans, then settled west of Lough Corrib. Here they ruled over extensive lands in the barony of Moycullen and in medieval times known as the Lords of Iar Connacht. The bards stress two characteristics of the clan down through the centuries, their hospitality and their courage in battle. O’Flaherty chieftains were also patrons of the ancient Celtic culture and customs and never did reconcile themselves easily to the settlement of the Normans in Ireland. They were known as “O’Flaherty of the Sword”. At least one chieftain became legendary for prowess as a swordsman. He was Eamon Laidir, “Strong Edward” who is credited with having been able to hew his way through a battalion of armed men. His valor and a similar reputation in other chieftains may have been the reason for the invocation said to appear in Norman litanies: “From the ferocious Flaherty’s. O Lord, deliver us.” But the courage alone was not enough to save the family estates from the confiscating vengeance of Cromwell. The final catastrophe followed the infamous Treaty of Limerick when the O’Flaherty’s like all other Irish families who fought the Stuarts lost everything but their honor and faith. As well as being patron of arts, several members of the family were Noted antiquarians. Rory O’Flaherty’s History of Pagan Ireland is one of the 17th century’s best source Books of Irish History. The family crest is an interesting memorial of a colorful past. It enshrines something of the best traditions on which our civilization in built, and even in our matter-a-fact day, can provide as incentive to preserve our heritage.

>Michael Flaherty Family

Michael Flaherty was –––––––born in County Kerry, Ireland. He was a youth during the

timewhen England was trying to discipline the Irish by banning and outlawing education and worship. As a result, the teacher and a few boys hid in the hedges to sneak a class when they were not being watched by the “peelers” (Policemen). The ﬁnal decision to leave Ireland (1845) came during the potato famine (1845 -1847). The trip to United States was made in leaky old sailboats, a six week journey in good weather. They traveled steerage crowded into the hold of the boat like cattle which was over run with rats and vermin. They had to bring along their own food. The water was rationed. Naturally, many ––––died and were buried at sea. It is believed these people landed in New Orleans and went up the Mississippi River, branched onto the Illinois River and arrived in Peru, Illinois. They settled on a farm about six miles northwest of Peru, Illinois. The land (Government owned) was either homesteaded or bought. It is believed the latter, though where or how they got he earned enough money to make the down payment is not known. The land was stony, they had to plow, lift the stones by hand to form fences and clear the stumps of what had been woodland to farm. That farm now forms part of the town of Ladd, Illinois.It seems that mining companies purchased the Michael Flaherty farm and the farm next to it (*John Scanlon farm) and

started the town of Ladd, (namely Osgood, then Laddville, and now Ladd. Michael had at

least two sisters, Betty Shea and Bridget Cahill. He ––––died about 1859 and was buried in St. Vincent’s Cemetery at LaSalle, Illinois.

Julia Cahill was –––––––born in County Kerry, Ireland. She could neither read nor write due to the discipline imposed on the Irish by England while forbidding education and worship in the early 1800’s. She is buried in St. Vincent’s Cemetery, at LaSalle, Illinois.
