theater ate.522 spring.12 weeks.14 The Fort Worth Community Arts Center is envisioned as a multidisciplinary cultural arts hub, which fills the need for an 800 seat theater in the Fort Worth area. The project involved the restoration of the current 500 seat theater, addition of the new larger theater, a smaller black box theater, as well as additional gallery, rehearsal, classroom and dining spaces. The building is designed as a large scale theater, with an audience as the public space, the stage as the “motherboard” or public circulation, and the back stage as the main program. The central “motherboard” becomes the hub in which all other programmatic elements connect. Internally, the motherboard is mainly used for circulation, but it also houses gallery space, lecture nooks, and balconies overlooking downtown Forth Worth. The outside covering is made of a digital LED light screen that changes color and function according to the use.

boyce thompson arboretum superior, arizona

Arizona’s abundance of natural sunlight has become a trademark of the grand canyon state, aside from the expansive desert landsape and the grand canyon itself. The fall 2011 graduate studio focused on this important state issue, by development and analysis through parametic design. My research and architectural design focused on capturing the daily and seasonal movement of light by emphasis through visble stimuli.

researcher dwellings ate.521 fall.11 weeks.04 The power of sun energy has become a catalyst for research for an emerging energy resource, algae production. Arizona State University’s LightWorks facility focuses on the develppment of algae research, growth, and production. The basis of this studio project was to utilize the knowledge and technology developed by LightWorks and design a complex composed of a conference center, small study laboratory, and researcher dwellings to serve as an educational tool for visitors and a meeting place for researchers. The researcher dwellings are designed as small scale residences that showcase the daily progression of light. A total of twelve dwellings are located on the western side of the site and are partially built within the hillside to utilize geothermal heating and cooling. An elevated path cuts between the units; this path highlights the natural rainwater swale whereby rainwater collects in this trough then travels down towards the nearby stream. A nature trail unifies the dwellings and connects researchers to the rest of the arboretum and offers great views of the surrounding landscape.

conference center ate.521 fall.11 weeks.08 Natural light movement is both a daily and seaonal progression. The architecture becomes the framework to capture the progression of light and the unique views of the landscape. Each programmatic module contains directional skylight openings which create a unique beam-like effect within each space. The designed promenade propels visitors through a series of outdoor and indoor spaces that capture different views of the landscape. The promenade also disperses public and private spaces offering an organized means of separation.

My summer internship offered a wide variety of tasks, assignments, and opportunities in both architecture and interior design. These two examples showcase the Environment and Natural Resources Building Phase II on the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, Arizona. The left page highlights the landscape integration throughout the multiple floors of the project. These diagrams were co-created with colleague Alex Therien, NCARB LEED AP. The right page displays a series of story boards shown to the client identifying furniture ideas and proposals for the varying program spaces throughout the building. These boards were done in coordination with Melissa Pulsifer, SEGD.

presidential infographic gra.590 fall.12 weeks.06 An infographic is a visual tool stemming from the fields of information design and data visualization. This tool allows users to quickly understand complex data and information through visual methodologies. This project utilizes many information design principles from graphic designer Edward Tufte’s book, Envisioning Information, like the use of small multiples, micro / macro readings, and a narrative of space and time. This project focused on creating a piece of information design on the 2012 presidential campaign. My project displays the various ties and locations in which they were worn by President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney during the 2012 campaign.

print design gra.590 fall.12 The message booklet was a client based exercise to create an viable object to display personalize hiaku poems. These hiakus were written by author Joe Salembier and revolved around the topic of tuna. This booklet is a collective publication proposal of some of his selected work with a graphic image related to his poem. Each page emphasizes symbolic, iconic, and indexical references that lead the viewer beyond the obvious interpretation of the visual media. The self promotional piece was an exercise on incorporating industrial and graphic design. The purpose of this tool is to showcase one’s creativity with a unique small-scale object that would supplement a professional resume or portfolio. The head is a simple box form with die cuts for the three-dimensional glasses which holds mint candy lifesavers and the platform lists the contact information and this appropriate tagline, “When you’re in dire need of fresh ideas, I can be a lifesaver.”

The designed system offers production, growth, and mobile possibilities in locations that lack the natural resources in a normal terrestrial medium. The basic components of an aquaponics system consist of a three-part continuous cycle. The plants grow by utilizing the microbe nutrients from fish excretions. The water is filtered through the gravel plant basin allowing the fish to benefit by receiving clean filtered water. The plants grow within floating aluminum cans at water level. A pump system continuously forces water throughout the container offering nutrients to the plants and cleaning water for the fish. photo credits: www.design-royale.com

My winning design showcases students as “products of The Design School as are the physical objects they design. The iconic bar code is a simple representation found on every product.
