Director’s Statement
Director’s Statement Anniversaries are great! 10 years! That’s how long Outpost has been in the (not so) NEW Space. Yes, ten years ago-- May 2000-- was the opening concert by the great Herbie Mann with his Eastern European inspired ensemble, Sonaterra. It’s going to be another great season at the Space and beyond with everything from the Outpost/ Walker Art Center-commissioned Bill Frisell, Rahim AlHaj, Eyvind Kang Baghdad/Seattle Suite collaboration, to Joy Harjo, who returns with her one woman show, to Zakir Hussain once again at the Lensic. Something for everybody. And in July, it’s the 5th Annual Jazz Festival with Los Pleneros de la 21; Miguel Zenon; Toshiko Akiyoshi & our own Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra directed by Bobby Shew, and more! I’m excited. Hope you are as well. So….. Here’s the deal. We couldn’t do it without your support, But you know that! And you’ve shown that you know that! Year End Donations, quite amazingly, were up 35% from last year. In these economic times that’s really something. THANK YOU and congratulations! We just ended a four year $100,000 grant with the Doris Duke Foundation— something that will not be easy to replace (but must be done!). Not surprisingly, we’ve heard from several granting agencies that grants will be significantly smaller for the foreseeable future. Makes sense. Grants come from Foundation investment income or Government funds and we all know what’s happened on that front. And all of our personal finances are hurting as well. So here’s what we need to do. MANY smaller donations are the way to go. Actually, it’s better that way— to not rely on any ONE source for support. It’s what happened this winter as many folks donated a bit less than last year. But there were MORE OF YOU. So let’s talk SPRING MEMBERSHIP DRIVE. We have a great base of around 650 members. Our goal over the next year is to raise that number up to 800 (900 in 2011; 1,000 in 2012). WE CAN DO IT. BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP. If you aren’t a member, become one today and get your friends on board. As a member you get discounts on tickets, plus discounts for your kids, newsletters sent to your home 3x per year, and invitations to memberonly events. Tell you what… If you bring us a new member, we’ll give you a $5 discount off of your next membership! As it is, every spring is a great time to become a member. A membership of $45 or more gets you 10 free raffle tickets for a chance to win a trip for two to the Monterey Jazz Festival in September (thanks MJF!) Finally, I want to thank all the people who think of ways to support Outpost. This past December, Albuquerque lost a wonderful and much-loved community member: Tim De Young—lawyer, musician, family man, and friend to many. His wife, Connie Meadowcroft decided to honor his memory by creating a fund to support our education program. Deep thanks to her and all the generous friends of Tim who donated almost $2,000 to this effort. Together we can keep it all going for another 20 years. I know we can! Tom Guralnick, Outpost Founder and Executive Director 2

Jazz Improvisation Classes for Youth are open to all young musicians (instrumentalists & vocalists)— elementary through high school levels— who want to have fun learning more about improvising and playing jazz in a small ensemble. Jazz Improvisation Classes for Adults are for aspiring musicians, retired or rusty musicians, closet jazz fanatics or for those who want to learn more about jazz. Adult classes are so popular that we now offer four different sections. All classes are taught by the Outpost team comprising saxophonist, Kanoa Kaluhiwa; drummer, Sharon Eldridge; and trumpeter, Paul Gonzales. We aim to build positive attitudes, trust, teamwork, cooperation, confidence, compassion, and a sense of humor—everything you could ever want from music. Both Youth and Adults will perform a recital for family and friends at the end of their second session. It is expected that students will have their own instruments to bring to class. Outpost will provide a piano, a drumset, and guitar & bass amplifiers.

Since its inception, more than 1800 students have moved through the program.

Outpost Education Programs
The afternoon Jazz Improvisation classes taught by Paul Gonzales, and Sharon Eldridge focus on the rudiments of music and improvisation including rhythmic training, scale work, form in music, and musical improvisation. Students are invited to express themselves freely on their respective instruments as well as on percussion instruments. The emphasis is on musical expression as an individual in a group setting. Each teacher has a slightly different approach and our goal is to place together students of similar levels as well as to form a balanced ensemble in terms of instrumentation. Advanced Level classes taught by Kanoa Kaluhiwa focus more specifically on the jazz repertoire, covering music theory, ear training, solo development, song forms, and various rhythm section approaches. ALL classes aim to build positive attitudes, trust, teamwork, cooperation, confidence, compassion, and a sense of humor—skills and values which will serve participants well beyond the workshop and throughout their entire educations and lives. Fun will be had by all!

Paintings 2003-2009 by Jack Davidson ArtsCrawl First Friday Night
Jack Davidson uses contemporary materials such as corrugated cardboard and other found/recycled objects. He is engaged in a tradition of storytelling dating back to the beginning of humanity, believing that there is not much difference between the pictography of ancient cultures and the visual language of computer icons; the walls of the Lascaux cave and the visual landscape of monitors and televisions and graffiti and shopping malls. In his recent work, Davidson expresses his feelings toward his joyful and expansive domestic life, and the steady dehumanization of the late industrial period. Exhibit Dates: February 1- March 26, 2010 13

While living in California, she performed with Clark Terry and Hank Jones at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Her 2005 Mercy Streets, was dubbed “one of the most important vocal albums of the year” and a 2008 trio CD, If Less is More…Nothing is Everything, garnered a Grammy-nomination for Best Jazz Vocal. In The Baghdad/Seattle Suite, the world of Americana and jazz improvisation by renowned guitarist, Bill Frisell, meets Iraqi maqams and originals via oud virtuoso Rahim AlHaj, while violist and erhu player Eyvind Kang, provides the bridge. Bill Frisell is unquestionably one of the most respected musicians in the jazz world— known for his blending of styles into a music which is unmistakably his own. Born in 1951 in Denver, he lived in New York for years, moving to Seattle in 1989, where he still resides. The Grammy award-winning Frisell has recorded over 30 albums. His work spans collaborations with jazz masters Paul Motian, Jim Hall and Ron Carter; to avant-gardists John Zorn; to jazz contemporaries Joe Lovano and John Scofield; to pop artists Burt Bacharach, Elvis Costello and Bono; to country and international artists, Viktor Krauss and Vinicius Cantuaria. Frisell met Rahim AlHaj at the Santa Fe Jazz and International Jazz Festival in 2004 at which point they first envisioned their present collaboration. Rahim AlHaj who was born in Baghdad, studied oud under the renowned Munir Bashir. Forced to flee Saddam Hussein’s Iraq for Jordan and Syria, he moved to Albuquerque in 2000. He has since toured the world extensively and released seven CDs, two of which have been Grammy-nominated including his most recent, Ancient Sounds, with sarod master Ustad Amjad Ali Khan on his own UR Music label. In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious United States Artist Award (as was Bill Frisell in 2006). Long-time Frisell collaborator Eyvind Kang’s music and interests span the worlds of contemporary classical, jazz, experimental rock, ambient and the middle east. Kang has released 7 albums of his compositions. As a violist and arranger, he has worked extensively with Laurie Anderson, Persian ney master Hossein Omoumi, and many more. Bill Frisell, Rahim AlHaj & Eyvind Kang will also appear on Monday March 29 as panelists (4:30pm) and performers (7:30pm) at the UNM Composers Symposium. Go to www.robbtrust.org for information. The music is “lively and danceable, raw yet intimate, and leaps easily from jazz to indie rock to the avant garde without losing its own sense of style.” It features Lily Maase, guitar/ voice/compositions; Mike Kammers, saxophone; Greg Heffernan, cello/electronics; Alex Mallett, bass/voice; and Nico Dann, drums. 23

Deane’s (Dino) latest project, HARMONOGRAPH2x2 refers to a simple scientific instrument that employs pendulums to create geometric images of frequencies. Musical intervals, like geometric proportions, always involve two elements in a certain ratio: two string lengths, two periods (lengths of time), or two frequencies (beats per length of time). “For some time now,” says Dino, “I have been exploring the idea of a nonlinear multidimensional approach to music (Taiji Pole, Out of Context, Grand Cross Eclipse) and this double duo of drums and strings is the next step in the exploration. It is also my first ensemble employing the LapSteel Dulcimer.” The ensemble of master improvisers features Al Faaet, drums; Joseph Sabella, drums; Yozo Suzuki, guitar; and J.A. Deane, LapSteel Dulcimer. The UFO Ensemble is one of the many projects of Albuquerque tuba player and composer Mark Weaver. An acoustic quartet featuring Weaver on tuba, Bill Clark on trumpet and flugelhorn, Christian Pincock on trombone/valve trombone, and Jason Aspeslet on drums, the group’s repertoire of tunes written by Weaver, was 25

Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni ba Concerts & Exhibits April
Sponsored by Textival Rug & Textile Workshop Bassekou Kouyate is an innovative master of the ngoni, an ancient traditional lute found throughout West Africa. He has collaborated with musicians inside and outside of Mali, including Taj Mahal and Toumani Diabate. A key musician on Ali Farka Touré s 2006 release, Savane, he toured with Touré before his passing. Recently, he was featured on Bela Fleck’s Africa Project tour. Kouyate has recorded two CDs including, Segu Blue and his 2009, I Speak Fula. Born in the remote village of Garana, he was raised by his mother, a praise singer, and his father and brothers who are also exceptional ngoni players. He married singer Ami Sacko (the ‘Tina Turner of Mali’) with whom he plays traditional Sunday wedding parties in the streets of Bamako. Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni ba (which means ‘the big or low ngoni’) is Mali’s first ngoni ensemble featuring the bass ngoni, which Bassekou invented. By adding extra strings, lowering the pitch, and making the instrument harmonically flexible, Bassekou helped to reinvigorate and transform the traditional music of the ngoni and bring it into the modern world. Ngoni ba plays music from the region of Segu, the heart of Bambara culture— pentatonic music which is considered as close to the blues as you can get in Africa. $25/$20 Members & Students. Gabriel Alegria’s Afro-Peruvian Sextet
33
Concerts & Exhibits April
Trumpeter and composer Gabriel Alegría is one of Perú’s most influential jazz figures, having developed a form which combines his jazz trumpet with the rich heritage of Afro-Peruvian music. He explores the common African roots found in both jazz and the black music of coastal Perú. His knowledge of Afro-Peruvian music is the result of extensive fieldwork in Perú where he learned from the art form’s masters. Currently Associate Director of Jazz Studies at New York University, Alegria holds a doctorate in jazz studies from the University of Southern California. His music is truly a cross-cultural exchange between the Americas, which defines Afro-Peruvian jazz music as the newest voice to come from Latin America. His debut CD, Nuevo Mundo, had a significant presence on North American Radio for more than five months, reaching the top of the Jazz Week World Music charts and CMJ Jazz Charts. The group has toured extensively throughout Perú and North America, including an appearance in 2009 at New York City’s Tribeca Performing Arts Center. For Jacqui Lewnes, motorcycles represent freedom, movement, and friendships. They embody youthful memories of summer: moving through the days with the wind in her face. Now, slightly older, she rides to keep grounded. These drawings are created from a collection of her photos, toys and great memories of her first bikes. These motorcycles, like life, are not stationary nor static. The bikes shake and rattle, the kick-stands are up and it’s up to you to catch the bikes before they fall over. Using puppets and/or object theatre, a bridge between theatre, visual art and puppetry, Loren Kahn Puppet and Object Theater brings to life a hilarious and magical world, which delights tiny children and provokes reflection in teenagers and grownups. It’s Time is a show based on simplicity and quietness. This short fantasy is about imagination and association of ideas. The scenes are like visual haiku, for that age when each moment is a discovery and magic is in the emotions. The goal was to create a show so quiet that you could hear the babies reactions. It is 30 minutes of drifting on the stream of thoughts, both before and beyond language. It’s Time is the American cousin of Qui dit gris, a French show created by Therese Angebault and Isabelle Kessler. Object Theater Creator and Director Isabelle Kessler is a talented veteran of European and American theater. She exercises her creative talent with everything from classic stage productions to toddler-friendly romps, to grand street theater involving 15 brides and 22 movie projectors. Cal Haines Tribute Trio plays Horace Silver The recently formed Cal Haines Tribute Trio honors the powerful influence of the great jazz piano composers. Featuring pianist John Rangel, bassist Michael Glynn, and drummer Cal Haines, the trio focuses each month on the compositions and original arrangements of a different jazz piano icon, from Bud Powell to Lennie Tristano to McCoy Tyner and so on. Tonight, they kick it off with a tribute to the “hard bop grand pop,” Horace Silver, whose tunes, “Nica’s Dream”, “Strollin’” and “Song for My Father” are jazz classics. Drummer, Cal Haines has become a mainstay in New Mexico’s jazz circle since relocating from California to New Mexico a few years ago. A professional drummer for more than forty years, he has performed with the likes of Diahann Carroll, Bob Hope, Al Green and Clark Terry, and was a member of Albuquerque’s Real Time Quartet with guitarist Lewis Winn in the ‘80s and ‘90s. John Rangel, a New York native who now lives in New Mexico by way of L.A., is a composer, pianist and teacher who has played with artists including Pharoah Sanders and Nat Adderly. Born in Badin, N.C. in 1926, Lou Donaldson, is still going strong at the age of 83— playing the same brand of soulful, swinging jazz that established him as one of the most popular alto saxophonists to ever record for the Blue Note label. Heavily influenced by Charlie Parker, Donaldson developed his own distinctively bluesy and soulful sound that used organ and guitar as the essential foundation for his music. His first recordings with Milt Jackson and Thelonius Monk in 1952, were followed by the legendary A Night At Birdland,Vols. I & II, along with Clifford Brown, Horace Silver, Art Blakey and Tommy Potter. Donaldson’s “Blues Walk,” became a major crossover hit in 1958, and subsequent albums such as Alligator Boogaloo (his first collaboration with organist Dr. Lonnie Smith) and The Midnight Creeper followed suit. He was one of the first to incorporate Latin percussion into his band, regularly featuring conguero Ray Barretto. Donaldson continues to tour Europe, Japan and the U.S., laying down the soul-groove sound he perfected decades ago and saying “what’s essential is that my music has a blues flavor, because when you get down to it, that’s what jazz is….Blues is the backbone, and if you don’t have it in jazz it’s like taking sugar out of a cake.” Accompanying Lou Donaldson is Pat Bianci, Hammond B-3 organ; Randy Johnston, guitar; and Fukushi Tainaka, drums $25/$20 Members & Students. WHAT WE ARE Outpost has been a non-profit arts organization since 1988. In 1990 we moved to our own place—the Outpost Performance Space—a unique and intimate, non-smoking, non-alcohol, alternative performance venue. WHERE WE ARE In the spring of 2000,The Space moved to 210 Yale SE just two blocks south of Central in the heart of the University district. An elegant, nonprofit, no-nonsense, community-based, performing arts center. WHAT WE DO We present a wide variety of music and more—over 100 shows a year plus classes and educational programs—all kinds of jazz (dixie to bop to modern to the avant-garde); folk, blues & roots music; experimental music; classical music; international music; kid’s programs; poetry & spoken word; theater and performance art; puppets; visual arts exhibits; and many other unique events. WE’RE PROUD to present and support the work of local, as well as touring artists—recognized, as well as emerging artists.
WHY WE DO IT We do it because we love it. And because we believe that performers and audiences deserve a place to meet and experience each other, up close, in a casual, but mutually respectful environment. 20th Anniversary Season Sponsors
