Dear Student Welcome to your BIMM Bristol 2015/16 prospectus. Inside you will find everything you need to make an informed choice about the next stage in your education. We have included details on our Higher Education courses, industry specialist tutors, life in Bristol, course fees, career development and pastoral support. Since BIMM was established more than 10 years ago, our aim has been to help every aspiring musician and music industry professional to achieve their personal goals and to enable them to gain the experience, the professionalism and the qualifications that will lead to a sustainable career in the music industry. Success is in our history. BIMM enjoys an enviable reputation as a springboard into employment and we now have over 1000 members in our active Alumni Association who regularly share their career success with us. Read a selection of these stories on pages 12-13. BIMM Bristol is dedicated to opening up a wide range of career options for graduates in music performance, songwriting, music production, music business and event management. As with our four existing centres, BIMM Bristol will provide a dynamic, creative community which represents all aspects of the music industry and provides the perfect place to network, collaborate with other professionals and establish the foundations of your future career. The music industry – although alluring – may seem an impenetrable secretive place. At BIMM we believe that the secret of success is no secret. The British music industry is worth over £4bn annually and employs over 140,000 people. For over 10 years, BIMM has been producing some of the industry’s brightest talents, from best-selling artists such as Tom Odell to leading songwriters, musicians, agents, producers, journalists, business professionals and major-label managers. Location is vital to breaking into the music industry, so we have based our five institutes in Bristol, London, Brighton, Manchester and Dublin. These cities have thriving music scenes that allow you to make the most of our world-class connections and to help you have the best possible experience of what life is like in the music industry. In this creative environment you can network and develop lifelong contacts while performing and staging gigs at local venues and festivals, as well as working with record labels, music producers and rehearsal studios.
All of our colleges offer fully accredited courses and are QAA-assured. Our tutors are experts in their fields and still tour, play and produce music with some of the biggest recording artists in the world such as Radiohead, Paul Weller, Madonna and Paul McCartney.
WHY BRISTOL? A thriving underground music and arts scene is at the heart of Bristol life, where individuality is celebrated and creativity rewarded. With a large student population, a love of live music and some of the UK’s best bars and shops, Bristol is the perfect place to immerse yourself. The city and surrounding area hosts a multitude of festivals including the worldrenowned Glastonbury. In 2010 a Performing Rights Society (PRS) study discovered that more working musicians have come from Bristol than any other city in the UK.

Every night of the week you’ll hear the sound of live music across the city. From up-and-coming artists performing in Stokes Croft – home to performance spaces, openmic nights, various venues and a glorious selection of care-worn pubs that have live music whatever the season – to international acts at the O2 Academy, Colston Hall and Bristol’s famous floating venue down on the dockside, the Thekla. Bristol has hundreds of venues, bars, pubs and clubs within the city’s boundaries – and many of the bands and artists playing these venues passed through BIMM. Throughout the year the city and surrounding area host numerous music festivals, including the legendary Dot to Dot, Big Chill, ArcTanGent, 2000trees and Harbour Festival – and don’t forget that Glastonbury is just down the road. The countercultural edge survives in Bristol in a very real way, with new music, art and literature being generated across the city at all times. Whether it’s a secret warehouse gig in Easton, a new underground club or VIP night on the Gloucester Road, leftfield art exhibitions or pop-up graffiti shows, Bristol’s focus is on that most enigmatic of qualities: authenticity.

EVENTS AND MASTERCLASSES We believe that to be the best it helps to meet the best. So we encourage and help you to network with and meet leading music-industry professionals. We use our connections to attract A-list musicians, songwriters, label executives, A&R reps and booking agents to share their knowledge with you in weekly masterclasses. Previous speakers include BIMM patron and The Who frontman Roger Daltrey and Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis.
BIMM ALBUM Every year we use our in-house record label to release an album featuring a host of BIMM musicians. You get to record at a professional studio with engineers and producers. BIMM bands and artists submit demos for inclusion on the album, which is released to the public and industry professionals to showcase the best of BIMM talent.
GIGS Live music is a huge part of what we do at BIMM. It’s not all about coursework, revision and exams: you will be heavily involved in Bristol’s live scene throughout the year, whether it’s gigging, rehearsing or promoting. We also run and put on our own shows, showcasing our musicians, bands and songwriters at the end of each term at a series of gigs across the city.

TOM ODELL BIMM songwriting graduate Tom progressed to the top of the music industry in 2013. His year began with the winning of the BRITs Critic’s Choice Award, and his debut album ‘Long Way Down’ went to number one. Tom discovered he’d topped the chart just prior to his performance at Glastonbury Festival – what a day!
THE KOOKS Multi-million-selling indiepoppers The Kooks began as students at BIMM, forming as a band in 2002. The band’s 2006 debut album ‘Inside In/Inside Out’ is certified as four-times platinum in the UK, and its follow-up, 2008’s ‘Konk’, went straight into the chart at number one. The band is BRIT-nominated and won in the category of Best UK & Ireland Act at the MTV Europe Awards in 2006.
NATASHA BENT BEN THOMPSON – TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB As live drummer for Two Door Cinema Club, Ben has toured the globe several times, performed at a multitude of domestic and international festivals and made numerous television appearances. 12
BIMM graduate Natasha is now a highly successful booking agent. She is Vice President at The Agency Group in London, personally representing artists including Foals, CHVRCHES and Foster The People.

LUKE SITAL-SINGH A young British talent with Glastonbury sets and sessions for BBC 6 Music and Radio 2 beneath his belt, Luke is an artist of real promise. Supported by DJs including Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne and Dermot O’Leary, he’s been compared to greats such as Jeff Buckley and Bon Iver.
STEVE SPARROW BIMM songwriting student Steve Sparrow is the lead vocal and guitarist in the band Morning Parade, signed to Parlophone Records. The band’s album ‘Headlights’ charted in the top twenty American Billboard Charts, leading to tours with the Smashing Pumpkins and an appearance on the Jay Leno TV show.
GEORGE EZRA Songwriting student George Ezra signed to Columbia Records in 2012 and has been performing across the UK, including a performance at Glastonbury Festival in 2013.
THE OTHER TRIBE BIMM students James Hill and Miles Crook formed The Other Tribe. Signed to Relentless Records, their debut single proved a huge hit gaining fans including: Fearne Cotton, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Pete Tong, Nick Grimshaw, Sara Cox and Toddla T. This lead to the band being a mainstay on the UK festival circuit appearing at Bestival, BeatHerder, Secret Garden Party, Glade, Isle Of Wight, Gottwood and Sunday Best.
BETH ROWLEY Having provided backing vocals for the likes of Ronan Keating and Enrique Iglesias during her time at BIMM, Beth truly grabbed the proverbial bull by the horns come graduation and signed to major label Universal, who released her 2008 debut album ‘Little Dreamer’. The record reached six on the UK albums chart. Beth’s collaborated with Crowded House and the legendary Burt Bacharach, and performed on Top Of The Pops and This Morning, as well as several other TV shows.
KATE WALSH Kate topped the iTunes chart with her second album, 2007’s ‘Tim’s House’, and in doing so the BIMM graduate became the firstever unsigned artist to do this. She’s since released several recordings through her own Blueberry Pie label, with distribution via Universal, and also returned to BIMM as a tutor.
JORDAN WHITMORE
JENN HANEEF – YAMAHA After graduating from BIMM, Jenn secured a career at Yamaha as a drum tutor, teaching both groups and individual students. Jenn was awarded her degree by Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis.
Having completed a BA (Hons) course in Professional Musicianship at BIMM, Jordan became a member of the Atlantic Records A&R department. The label is home to such high-profile acts as Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Missy Elliott and Plan B.

HEADS OF DEPARTMENT STUART RYAN - Head of Guitar Described as “one of the finest of the young generation” by leading jazz guitarist Martin Taylor MBE, award-winning musician Stuart is known to guitarists the world over thanks to his monthly columns in Guitar Techniques magazine, contributions to Total Guitar and Guitarist, and concerts throughout the UK and beyond. Previously named Guitarist magazine’s Acoustic Guitarist of the Year, Stuart has performed alongside leading guitarists Martin Taylor, Eric Roche and Thomas Leeb. STUART CLAYTON - Head of Bass Guitar Stuart is one of the most respected bass teachers and transcript writers around. In 2002 he became a writer for Bass Guitar magazine and was soon approached by Sanctuary Publishing. Stuart has written several books including Giants Of Bass and Ultimate Slap Bass. Stuart is also a world-class player and has toured the world with Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake and Palmer. 14
JAMES HESTER - Head of Drums James is an incredible talent who is a busy player with his band, Malachai, signed to Island and Domino. James’s full schedule is down to his versatility, being able to play everything from metal to jazz to drum & bass. James also writes columns across many drumming magazines and websites and publishes his own drum titles.
MARTIN HIBBERT - Head of Vocals Martin is a broad-ranged voice artist, having spent the last 20 years working in theatre, TV and production. He has toured Europe and played many of the major venues in the UK and the West End, appearing in musical theatre productions. His vocals have been used in commercials and multimedia infomercials for companies including BT, Tesco, Halifax, Kellogg’s and numerous others.
GERARD LANGLEY - Head of Songwriting Gerard has been the leader of Bristol’s biggest guitar band, The Blue Aeroplanes, since their first album in 1984, selling close to half a million records. They have released albums on EMI, Chrysalis, Beggars Banquet and Fire Records. Ex-members of The Blue Aeroplanes have played with Massive Attack, Primal Scream, Suede, Goldfrapp and many others. Gerard has also released solo and duo albums and collaborated with Michael Stipe of REM.
JOHN GARDEN – Module Leader Music Production John is a composer, musical director and performer with over fifteen years’ experience as a working musician. John was musical director and keyboard player for New York band Scissor Sisters for seven years, performing at venues and festivals worldwide, as well as many TV and radio appearances, and recording sessions in London, New York and the Bahamas. Other collaborations include: Marina and the Diamonds (supporting Coldplay on their 2012 Mylo Xyloto tour); Alison Moyet (as musical director); Ke$ha; Tristan Mackay; Elizabeth Fraser; Jukes (aka Tamco); Jimmy Goodrich; Nathan Daniel (aka Tilted City); Tony Orrell (as JJ and the Birdman); Emily Breeze.
HAZEL MILLS – Head of Theory Hazel is a Bristol-born singer and pianist known for her mesmerising live-looping and vocal processing. Although classically trained, she developed an interest in unconventional performance while studying American Experimentalism at the University of Birmingham. She further explored this when she began working with one of Bristol’s most
innovative programmers, TJ Allen (Bat For Lashes), on her solo work, and with Roxy Music’s legendary sax player on his new project, Andy Mackay & The Metaphors.
JAMIE HUNT – Head of Live Performance Workshop Jamie was the energetic guitarist for metal band Biomechanical (signed to Earache Records). He has recorded three studio albums and toured endlessly around Europe and America. Jamie has a passion and admiration for all styles of music, is a regular columnist in many guitar publications and tries to bring this into his approach to technical guitar playing. He also has a very keen interest in time manipulation, which he has developed and pushed boundaries with alongside drummer extraordinaire Pete Zeldman (Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio, Jaco Pastorius).
CLIFF JONES - Head of Music Business Cliff was the frontman and songwriter for Britpop band Gay Dad, who enjoyed a number of top 40 hits and produced two acclaimed charting albums. He then became a songwriter for EMI Music Publishing, a noted record producer for major labels, TV composer and A&R consultant. He continues to write extensively for a range of publications including the Sunday Times, the Observer, MOJO and British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors. He is the author of a book on Pink Floyd and also consults for well-known brands on music within communications, advertising and TV. Cliff is currently the MD for the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

GUITAR, BASS, DRUMS, AND VOCALS. If you’re a musician who loves performing live or recording in the studio then the BA (Hons) in Professional Musicianship will help you turn your passion for music into a career. The degree is academically challenging and will stretch you as a musician, composer and performer while also providing you with the essential business skills required to work successfully in the music industry. At BIMM Bristol we understand that live performance is the key to becoming a fantastic musician, so you’ll spend a lot of time on stage to help you develop as a performer. Alongside this stage time you’ll receive thorough tuition in musical technique, theory and styles across a wide range of genres. 18

PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANSHIP SONGWRITING BA (HONS)
At BIMM we recognise the unique talent required to be a songwriter. The BA (Hons) Songwriting has been designed to specifically nurture your creative flair for composition and lyric writing.
Your course will culminate with a professional project that is designed to give you the opportunity to develop a live industry project of your choice to give you a head start into the workplace when you graduate.
With a strong focus on writing technique, analysis and personal stylistic development you will be encouraged to explore your creativity as an artist in a range of disciplines from solo and group performance to commercial songwriting.
At BIMM you will be part of a creative community of talented writers, performers and music-industry professionals. There is no better place to learn your craft and to bring your talent to life.
In addition to composition and performance you will undertake research and project work to help you to develop realistic and attainable career goals. To be successful as a songwriter a detailed understanding of the music business is essential. We will share our understanding of music publishing, contracts and recording technology and deliver our teaching in line with the latest trends and directions in the evolving music industry.

MUSIC PRODUCTION BA (HONS)
The songwriter-producer is at the forefront of a great deal of commercial music produced today. The combined abilities to both write music (with artists and solo) and produce it to a high standard is essential in a sustainable career. The Music Production BA (Hons) award has been designed with these criteria in mind. It is a specialist and vocational programme designed for those wishing to pursue a career in a wide range of music industry roles such as songwriter-producer, sound engineer, film composer, live musician or computer music designer. The course sits on the very cutting edge of music production and composition, with sessions being delivered in established studios utilising professional equipment and software. You will benefit from learning and working in industry standard production facilities across the region, including Rockfield Studios whose past clients include Iggy Pop, Kasabian, Coldplay, Paul Weller, New Order, Manic 22

There are also regular sessions at J and J Studios and Toybox Studios, which have been used by platinum-selling artists such as Robert Plant, Portishead, PJ Harvey and Seasick Steve. During the course you will learn about the detailed technology and technique requirements to produce music across a wide range of contexts: from traditional studio recording to film, television, animation, multimedia and live environments. You will also gain a thorough grounding in the context of contemporary music, the industry that supports it and the personal skills, project management skills and business acumen required for a successful career in music production.

Over the past 10 years, with the growth of digital music and the live scene, the UK’s music business has changed significantly, with the online sphere providing exciting new opportunities for music delivery and employment. SUMMER SCHOOLS EVERY YEAR AT BIMM WE RUN A RANGE OF SUMMER SCHOOLS FOR MUSICIANS LOOKING TO DEVELOP THEIR TECHNIQUE AND CONFIDENCE AS LIVE PERFORMERS. IF YOU’RE A GUITARIST, SINGER, BASSIST OR DRUMMER A BIMM SUMMER SCHOOL IS A FANTASTIC WAY TO SPEND YOUR BREAK. Each Summer School is run over a fiveday week and consists of dedicated tuition on your instrument, followed by a live performance workshop every afternoon to hone your performance skills. You will be guided by your tutors and a different special guest each day. The last day will involve forming bands and rehearsing your favourite track of the week in preparation for an afternoon performance for your friends and family. BIMM Summer Schools are open to all musicians aged 11+ who are not absolute beginners on their instrument. We always have a good range of ages at the Summer Schools, so remember you’re never too old or too young to rock out!

HIGHER EDUCATION COURSES 1. M ake your application through UCAS at www.ucas.com. To apply via UCAS you will need your course code and also the correct campus and institution codes. The first UCAS deadline for application is 15th January 2015. There are further opportunities to apply but it is recommended you meet this first deadline. 2. For Performance courses you will require an assessment with BIMM. Once we have received your application we will book your assessment or you can book one before you apply by calling our admissions teams on 08442 646 666. For Music Production courses, in addition to applying through UCAS, you will be required to submit a portfolio of your work on application.
3. I f your UCAS application is successful you will be made either a conditional or unconditional offer. If it is conditional it will be pending BIMM receiving any further information that is required, such as exam results and certificates. If it unconditional then you have met the entry criteria for the course. 4. Confirmation of your place will be made through ‘Track’ on ucas.com. It is then up to you to confirm if you wish to take your place.

This will be provided once you return a signed copy of your contract offer and have paid your full fees following a successful application. If you have applied through UCAS it will be dependant on you confirming your place on Track and paying full fees. 3. O nce you have received your CAS number you will be able to proceed with your visa application. In March 2012 BIMM was awarded full ‘Highly Trusted Status’ by the UK Border Agency.

STUDENT LOANS At BIMM we have ensured that our degreecourse tuition fees offer exceptional value for our students, with all of our three-year HE courses priced at under £6,000 per annum for UK and EU students. For most students studying a degreelevel course, tuition fees can be covered by a student loan from the Student Loans Company. BIMM continue to be able to offer loans through the Student Loans Company as we have been fully QAA assessed which is a requirement of the government to be able to offer student loans on a continuing basis. Both UK and EU students are eligible to apply for a student loan. You can find out more information on the guidelines of and how to apply for a student loan at www.slc.co.uk. Student loans for Tuition fees provided by the Student Loan Company will cover a maximum of £6,000 of fees per annum, if you are eligible for a loan. Where the annual course fees are in excess of £6,000, the balance must be paid by the student prior to enrolling each academic year.
REPAYMENTS Your repayments are linked to your income. You only make repayments when your income is over £21,000 a year, and if your income drops below this amount repayments stop. Each month you pay back 9% of any income over £21,000, this would work out at approximately £30 per month if you were earning £25,000 per year.
