RCA Cables For Audio and Video Connections An RCA cable or connector is a type of electrical cable that is used to carry radio and audio signals. Also known as A/V jacks it derives its name from Radio Corporation of America, which first developed the design in early 1940’s. The connectors were invented so that the end-users could connect their record players to the radio and enjoy a higher audio quality. RCA cables can be a single-plug mono cable, two-prong stereo audio cables or three-prong cables (for both audio and video). The three-prong cables normally come in three color-coded plugs which are connected to three respective color-coded jacks. The colors that are generally used are red (for right audio channels), white (for left audio channels) and yellow (for composite video). Usually called ‘phono plugs’ or ‘phono jacks,’ they are commonly used for connecting variety of audio/video components such as stereos to speakers, DVD players to TVs, or video cameras to TVs. Their use in composite video, which are analog or non-digital in nature, is extremely common. Any normal household which has electronics devices will also have a cable like a 18ft rca audio cable or simply a rca cable for connecting the devices to each other. The cables/connectors are also applicable in many other uses, for example as a power connector, connector for loud speaker cable and RF connector. Before buying these cables, one should always be acquainted with the color coding, the quality and the types of the cables. For example, stereo RCA connectors are the most recognized types of connectors but there may be different kinds and lengths within that type like 6ft, 18ft, 50ft RCA stereo cable, so on and so forth.
Also Stereo audio applications usually use black + red, grey + red or white + red RCA connectors. Though the cords may look complicated to plug in but it is much easier to operate. Over the years, the components themselves have improved and advanced but RCA cables themselves have not changed much, and is still used for making a quality audio and video connection. But it must be admitted that with the advent of digital technology, the standard RCA cables are gradually being replaced for the new video and audio devices.
