CORONTAION STREET 50TH ANNIVERSARY
A TRIP DOWN
It’s the birthplace of Bette Lynch, the Websters, Barlow’s and the Battersbys ... Pure’s David Kavanagh takes a walk down the famous cobbled streets of Weatherfield as part of their 50th birthday celebrations Older than Eastenders & Hollyoaks combined, Coronation Street, the nation’s favourite soap is approaching an impressive and mighty milestone, as the world’s longest running soap and is coming into its 50th anniversary year; and to celebrate this occasion ITV organised a lavish VIP street party on its famous cobbles and Pure magazine scored a hot ticket along with 200 journalists from around the globe to join in on the birthday celebrations. There’s not a person in the UK who hasn’t
seen or heard of the multi-award winning soap; set in Weatherfield we follow the lives and loves, daily dramas and sometimes twisted deceitful scenarios of street members as they go about their business living life on the street. This quiet cobbled street, set in Salford, Manchester has seen more murder, betrayal, fires and explosions than any other over the years! This soap is a TV phenomena as it broke the mould and made television history since Tony Warren created the show back in 1960. It was the show that no one wanted and it took thirteen attempts before the pilot was agreed and the first episode aired live on
We got to see it all, even Jack’s Urn placed on the shelf in the Duckworth’s home
Granada Television on Friday 9th December 1960. Since then the blueprint has been copied by networks around the world and Coronation has secured a global audience as is syndicated to almost every country in the world. So to mark this awesome milestone, the writers and producers have been planning the mother of all storylines ... one that involves multiple deaths, a wedding and a birth, a tram crashing over a via duct directly into Coronation St homes and businesses ... fires and explosions, affairs and a murder – all of which to happen in one week leading up to a live episode where the street will change forever.
At least four of our favourite cast members will die and Coronation Street chiefs are launching a massive security operation to ensure that no stories leak and cast members won’t know their fate until screening of the live episode. Security is so tight, Corrie bosses have even booked out an adjacent 5star hotel for the week of filming, and at £200-500 per room per night you get an idea at how ITV are doing everything in their power to keep the storylines hidden from the public. And so, in a street that has witnessed more loves, lies and drama than any other, it’s a fitting tribute to the street, past cast members and the future storylines to come that an impressive week of jawdropping television is planned to mark this special occasion. We’re told the budget was literally thrown out of the window in planning this week long extravaganza as worldwide industry leaders in special effects join the ITV team, which promises an unforgettable television experience that will change the lives of the Coronation Street neighbourhood FOREVER! 50 years is an amazing achievement and the show is just as/if not more popular, than that of its early days back in 1960. ITV wouldn’t let this occasion couldn’t go past without a party, so they set to work on arranging a blitz-style street party complete with hoopla, pin the tail on the donkey and pole duck catching. This was an impressive experience and one we and the other lucky press members will cherish as it is highly unlikely to happen again within our lifetimes. As we sat down and rubbed shoulders with the cast, we enjoyed tasty sandwiches, champagne and betty’s hotpot made into pies. We then, sneaked off for a crafty smoke with Norris (who, by the way smokes Berkley Menthols!!) and downed a pint with Kevin Webster & Tyrone Dobbs – not your usual Friday afternoon delights! My personal highlight of the day was sharing a hug with veteran TV legend Betty Driver (Barmaid and renowned for her famous hotpot) and then to be serenaded with live music performed by Kym Marsh, Andrew Whyment (Kirk) and The Windass Family, who sang hits like ‘Son of a preacher man, Let it be and I got you, babe’. Earlier in the day we witnessed, William Roche (the only remaining character from the original cast) being presented with his own world record plaque. William (Ken Barlow) was awarded the title when he outlived his predecessor Nancy Hughes from the same soap as he became the longestserving television actor. Wow, what an achievement! And as we mingled with the cast and
crew, I spoke with Tony Warren the brain box creator who penned the pilot series who explained the reason why the show is still a huge success 50 years on. “The show is about real life, real people and the day to day goings on that we all go through. Fair enough, it is scripted and dramatised for effect, but we base our storylines on real life situations that appear across the country, that’s why it works! People identify with the storylines and the cast who play them and it’s a fitting tribute that we mark our 50th anniversary with such amazing storylines, the lives of the street WILL never be the same again”. For many years, ITV and Granada Television allowed guided tours of the set and scenery around Weatherfield, but unfortunately for the public, back in 199? ITV pulled down the shutters and stopped the tours and launched round the clock security to keep the public off the cobbles, in a stance to protect upcoming storylines. Thousands of people have visited the set over the years but since it became closed to the public, only celebrities and members of the royal family have been lucky enough to get a behind the scenes glimpse at the nation’s favourite soap – that was, until now ... We were taken in small groups behind the scenes and toured the sets and famous locations from the soap: from Ken & Deidre’s living room to the Rovers Return and Carla O’Connor’s flat. We got to see it all, even Jack’s Urn placed on the shelf in the Duckworth’s home, hmmm??? On first glance, the buildings, sets and interiors appear much smaller than on screen, and for a second you could be forgiven in thinking that you were actually visiting a real person’s home due to the level in detail in the props and character photographs. We were told that the sets are taken up and down on a daily basis to suit the filming – but, how do they manage to rebuild everything in the exact same manner week on week? TV magic at its finest!

CORONTAION STREET 50TH ANNIVERSARY
Outside the party continued, crowds of people were mingling, sipping champagne on the famous cobbles and outside no9 Coronation St (The Duckworth’s house) we banged into Jane Danson who plays Leanne Battersby, after a quick chat she explained that “Friday’s are normally filming days onset, but today’s a bit like being on non-uniform day at school”. I then tried to sneak some inside gossip on the special anniversary storylines but she wouldn’t budge ... “We still don’t know 100% about what’s planned; we’re still a little bit in the dark, but picking up our scripts is like picking up a feature film”. Moving on up the street we overheard Phil Collinson, executive producer for Corrie being interviewed by Anthony Cotton (Sean Tulsley) about the special events to come “A Tram will come off the viaduct and crash
9
With everything that’s planned, this winter is set to be a busy one in Weatherfield and we will certainly be glued to our screens as we watch the plot unfold! directly into Dev’s corner shop and will then crash right into the newsagents as well ... there’s a massive team of special effects people coming in who will look after all the fires and collapsing buildings, it’s going to be very spectacular”. Kieran Roberts, another Coronation St producer also said “What’s important about the tram crash is that it is going to crash through stories and crash right through lives;
we are killing people, there will be a murder, and three other deaths ... at least! These are people who are well known and cared for by the public ... these are big, big stories and there’s going to be a baby in the middle of it all”. So, as you can see the Coronation Street team are keeping everything very tight-lipped about the anniversary storylines, but it promises to be a week of chaos for the residents of Coronation Street, which after the live episode (09/12/10) will mark an end and a new beginning to living life on the cobbled streets of Weatherfield. With everything that’s planned, this winter is set to be a busy one in Weatherfield and we will certainly be glued to our screens as we watch the plot unfold!
r o f e s a b t c e f r e p e h T ’ ! r e t s e h c d a M ‘ g n i r o l exp Want to get as close to the famous cobbles as possible? Any diehard Corrie fans out there, listen up! No trip to Manchester would be complete without the obvious celeb stalking that goes on ‘Up North’. These days Manchester is known as the capital of the North and a quick walk through its busy shopping areas normally includes a few famous faces picking up last minutes messages in Tesco or shopping for designer items along King Street. Manchester has it all; from famous footballers to singers and soap stars living their day to day lives. And although Granada TV stopped their guided tours to Coronation Street in the early 90s, one place you can guaranteed to see a few of the cast is in the Marriott V&A directly opposite the famous filming studios along Water Street.
This four star hotel was once owned by Granada Television and due to its handy location is a firm favourite for the cast members to stay – So much so, some of the old time cast live here permanently! Pure stayed here for the weekend during our time in ‘Madchester’ and to say we enjoyed the luxury is a serious understatement! This hotel has a certain ambience and it’s very easy to understand the reason why it is loved by cast. If you come to Manchester you should really stay here! It’s close to hustle and bustle of City life, rammed with famous faces and if you’re lucky enough your window might overlook the studios – it’s the closest thing to Corrie we’ve found and since it’s a Marriott you’ll be very well looked after! Check out www.marriott.co.uk for the latest rates and deals or contact the hotel direct on 0161 832 1188.
Blanche in her own words For over thirty years, Blanche Hunt has put the world of Weatherfield to rights, with her sharp tongue, gossiping ways and blunt put downs ... She entertained millions and was the ultimate epitome of one of those cantankerous old people, who are just painfully, brutally honest. Maggie Jones died in December 2009 and now Coronation Streets fans throughout the nation have said farewell to Blanche onscreen. Here we have chosen some of Blanche’s best one-liners, the reason she was regarded as one of the soaps most popular characters over the past 50 years. Blanche: [on Christmas Day] This turkey is dry enough to choke a camel.
he should be crayoning summat. Blanche Hunt: [to Tracy] You’re remarkably chipper. Trod on a snail?
Blanche [to Deirdre and Ken]: “Good looks are a curse. You and Kenneth should count yourselves very lucky.”
Blanche Hunt: [on hearing that Peter and Leanne want their own bar] An alcoholic and an arsonist open a bar? Sounds like the start of a joke.
Blanche: “I have no problems with the gays! You know I’d walk on hot coals for Paul O’Grady.” Blanche: “There’s nowt worse than folk poring over other people’s misfortune for their own entertainment. Now pipe down, I can’t hear a word of Trisha!” Blanche Hunt: [talking about Liz McDonald] Skirt no bigger than a belt, too much eyeliner, and roots as dark as her soul. Blanche Hunt: [talking about café owner Roy Cropper and his transsexual wife Hayley] He’s a looney and she’s a man. Blanche Hunt: [talking about café owner Roy Cropper whom she thinks is a bit simple] He looks like
Blanche Hunt: [at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting] I’ve never heard such self-indulgent whinging in all my life. Is there some correlation between how boring you are and how much you drink? Blanche Hunt: [talking about Eileen’s father, Colin Grimshaw] I’d cut off his whatnots wi’ a pair of garden shears, me. The rustier the better. Blanche Hunt: [talking about Gail] Never happy unless she’s got someone’s hands round her throat. Blanche Hunt: [to Ken Barlow] You’re going to have to learn to take pleasure in the misfortunes of others, Ken, or you’re going to have a very miserable old age.

Tony Warren wrote the first 14 episode of Coronation Street. The first lady writer on the show was Barbara Clegg in May 1961.
3
“Now the next thing you’ve got to do is get a sign writer in”. These are the show’s first words, spoken to corner-shop owner Elsie Lappin as she handed the shop over to Florrie Lindley.
4 5
More than 5,000 characters have appeared in the show.
There is a cut out ginger Tom Cat called Marmaduke on the roof of the interior set of the Rovers to bring them good luck. This tradition comes from to Elizabethan times when cats became good luck symbols in the theatre because the got rid of the cats!
6
It takes 66 hours to make five episodes of Coronation Street. That is six days a week and 52 weeks of the year.
In a year customers at Roy’s Rolls will sup more than 14,000 cups of tea and 29,000 cups of coffee, what means 280 cups of tea a week and 560 cups of coffee.
13
The Rovers would serve on average 720 pints of beer a week. Including lager, it would serve around 1,440 pints each week. Since the soap started in 1961, The Rovers has served over 2 million pints of beer.
16
When Fred Elliot ordered Scotch and threat, he was ordering whiskey and water. It refers to whiskey with the threat of water.
On average customers at the Rovers get through one box of crisps a week which is 48 bags. In a year they need 2,500 bags and since the show started in 1961 they will have eaten over 120.000 bags.
15
17
14
The Rovers has had 13 landlords and landladies, 12 temporary managers, 51 barmaids, four barmen, 17 potmen and 10 cleaners.
The drinks in The Rovers are not real. The beer used is very week shandy, watered down with lemonade. It is so sweet that Bill Yard (who played Charlie Stubbs) found it very difficult to swallow. So, if you watch early scenes of Charlie drinking in the Rovers his face shrivels when he downs a pint. On the other hand, gin and tonic is made with water and a tiny splash of lime juice.
18
Make up products. In one month alone, the Corrie cast go through 50 boxes of tissues, 20 packs make-up wipes, ten lipsticks, five lipliners, four eyeliners, five powders, six eyeliners, four blushers, 15 bases, six eye shadows and 15 large hairsprays.
19 7
Only one of the original cast, Ken Barlow, played by William Roache, is still a cast member today, gaining him a place in the Guinness Book World Records. Eyleen Derbyshire has also been in the show for nearly 50 years.
8
Cast and production crew drink 600 cups of tea and 600 cups of coffee a week. That’s over 31,000 cups of tea a year. Since the show started they have drunk 1.5 million cups of tea while waiting to go on a set.
9
The original title sequence was filmed in Archie Street, Salford, which was demolished in 1971.
10
Approximately 280 people are needed each week to ensure that Coronation Streets hits our scenes.
11
The show is shown in more than 40 countries around the world including
The character of Liz McDonald gets through four lipglosses per month, Tracy Barlow used at least one red lipstick per month and Michelle Connor gets through to kohl pencils a month.
20
Many of the cast bring pieces into costume. The shopping bag Roy carries actually belonged to David Neilson’s mum.

When you bag yourself a last-minute date, just don’t resort to just throwing your hair in a pony. Below are some hot styles that’ll make him think you spent hours primping yourself for him, when really you spent most of the day watching “Loose women” before throwing your look together.
1
1
THE BARELYTHERE WAVE
This look is really easy, which is great because wavy hair is in right now. First, mist your hair with water, apply a dab of curl-enhancing cream to your damp hair, then pull up into a centered ponytail at the crown of your head. Twist and wrap the tail around the elastic into a loose bun and secure with a few hair grips. Finally, blow-dry it in place for a few minutes to set the style. Once you unravel your hair and take the ponytail down, your hair will have a soft wave, just like Ashley Greene’s.
2
FLIPPED OUT
This bed-head look is simple but so seductive. First, apply serum to your dry locks to tame flyaways. After lightly straightening your hair in inch-wide sections all over the head, flip out the ends instead of flattening them. For the finishing touch twist the ends of your strands. You’ll have the sleek, straight look with ends that are a bit more funky and tousled. If only we could score Jessica Biel’s body that easily...
4 2

3
SEXY UNDULATIONS
Lusting after SJP’s Swaves? Us, too! Divide your hair into five sections all around the head and pleat each section. They don’t have to be tight or neat. After, run a flat iron over each braid, clamping them for about 10 seconds. Once cool, unravel pleats and run your fingers through your hair to break up the sections. Simple Perfection.
4
3 HALF AND HALF
Kristin Davis nailed this romantic look. First, apply a bit of curl-enhancing cream to your dry locks. Divide your hair into 8 sections to curl. Wind each section around a curling iron for about 5 seconds. After, gently pull the top and sides of your hair back into a soft half-ponytail. Separate the curls on the bottom (the section you’ve left out of the ponytail) with your fingers to get more body.
5
5 FAUX BOB
This fake-out style works best with curly hair, like Taylor Swift’s. First, using a pair of straighteners, softly curl the hair around your face. Next, put your hair up in a super-loose ponytail so that the front drapes down right at chin-level. Then twist the ponytail and roll it under, right at the nape of your neck. Tuck it in so you can’t see the hair and secure with a few hair pins. An Instantly wonderful make- shape bop!!

with make-up expert Naomi Murphy from Debenhams’ bareMinerals counter
The last hurrah Girls, just because summer is coming to an end doesn’t mean our make-up has to. There’s still a few more Saturday nights out to be squeezed in before the season is officially over, so let’s go out with a bang of colour. Here are the key looks you will want to be seen wearing on those last nights of summer fun. Celebs such as Beyonce, Katy Perry (and most likely her fiancé Russell Brand!) have been snapped supporting smouldering turquoise eyes, so hop on board this great trend while you have the chance. Warning: if you can’t handle colour, look away now! Eyes We’re using an amazing turquoise eye colour called Exotic Tara. If you dampen your eye shadow brush before applying, it deepens the colour and gives it that crisp foiled look, which you will want to apply all over your lid. To make those peepers pop, line your lash with our Liner kit, which has three different brush heads giving you different looks which can take you from day to night in seconds. Then apply Weather Everything mascara. Handy hint: When using strong eye colours, apply your eye shadow before your foundation. This makes it much easier to clean up anything that has dropped onto your cheeks. Face After choosing your right shade of foundation, apply all over the face, locking it in with illuminating mineral veil. Put blusher in the colour of Beauty, which is a soft pink on the apples of your cheek, blending it with your fingers in upwards movements to give the illusion that you have fabulous cheek bones. To give your skin that healthy glow, try Flawless Radiance, which can be applied all over the face for that dewy look, and on your shoulders and legs. Lips Well ladies, we here at bareMinerals have a treat in store for you: hot off the shelf we have 100 percent natural lip glosses inspired by cakes that taste great on the lips. And guess what? No calories! They come in a pack of four for the great price of £20, and for this look I’ve chosen Cupcake. So that’s it; the perfect exotic glow for our last balmy days of summer. Pop in any time to bareMinerals and receive a free consultation to find out which colours suit your skin tone.

Designer Focus Stephen Webster Widely regarded as the ‘rock and roll’ jewellery designer, London-based Stephen Webster’s unconventional yet beautiful pieces have never been in higher demand, whether it be from high-ranking members of the celebrity jet set or the girl on the street with her finger firmly on fashion’s cutting-edge pulse. Stephen has combined his love of traditional craftmanship with an acute awareness of popular culture to produce unique and edgy jewellery that has had the A-listers queueing up in their droves for bespoke pieces, with the likes of Kate Moss, Madonna, Elton John and Christina Aguilera just some of the luminaries on his celebrity roster. From humble beginnings just outside London, Stephen has bult an impressive empire over the past 30 years, and now ranks as one of the international scene’s most accomplished and innovative designers. His company currently boasts 200 points of sale worldwide, and it’s thanks to his vision that coloured gemstones
and fine jewellery have once again been thrust into the spotlight. Stephen’s fabulusly quirky ‘astro ball’ pendants, based on each of the zodiac signs, have emerged as one of this season’s ‘musthave’ accessories. At £510 a pop they don’t come cheap, but as the likely enduring trend in the years ahead is to keep the clothes cheap and let a statement piece of bling do the talking, it may just be the investment buy of the decade. This range, plus Stephen’s aquatic-themed Jules Verne collection, is exclusive to Lunn’s in Derry and Belfast.

We talk to The Saturdays’ Frankie Sandford about life, love and the girls’ latest album... “The worst thing about fame is that everyone feels like you’re public property”
Hi Frankie. Your latest album Headlines is a bit of a mini-album. What prompted you to put it out? We all really loved the songs, and because they sounded so current we didn’t want to wait. There are more and more eight-track albums being released these days, so we thought ‘why not’? The single ‘Missing You’, for example, was just too good to be kept on ice. It’s a song everyone can relate to. Everyone’s been in that situation, where you still love someone but the passion’s gone, and I think the song will speak to a lot of people. You’ve been in the music game since you were really young. Is this something you were born to do? Definitely. Originally I went to dance school, as that was something I always loved doing, and from there I went on to stage school. When I auditioned for S Club Juniors I didn’t realise at the time how big a thing that would be, but I have to say that whole experience was something I never found overwhelming. Singing and dancing is all I know, and I think when you’re young it’s easier to be in the spotlight. What’s the best and worst thing about being a pop star? The best thing is that I get to perform and do what I love doing. The worst is that everyone feels like you’re public property. They’ll say anything to you or about you, and sometimes forget that you’re a oersin with feelings and that negative comments can be very hurtful.
“Dougie and I realised how much we meant to one another”
Yes, there were a lot of abusive comments posted on Twitter when you split with Dougie (from McFly) earlier this year. That must have been tough... Yeah, it was. We’re both only young, and as most people do at that age, we’ve been
through a stage where we’ve broken up and got back together again. The difference for us was that the state of our relationship was the focus of so much media attention.
Frankie wants to keep her relationship with Dougie out of the spotlight. So how are things between you at the minute? Like everyone else, our relationship has been through its ups and downs, but ultimately we realised how much we meant to one another. We both understand what it feels like to be in the public eye. Me and Dougie don’t tend to go out where we’ll be pictured together, and try to lead as much of a private life as we can. The band is the subject of a new reality TV show, The Saturdays: 24/7, which is airing on ITV2 this autumn. How has that been? The crew were with us all the time, and that really took a while to get used to. Me and Rochelle get caught out loads of times without a scrap of make-up on, so I think my spot on the FHM list will definitely be taking a nosedive next time round! (Frankie was ranked number 4 in the magazine’s ‘100 Sexiest Women’ list of 2010). Are you worried about any of the footage that will be shown? It is kind of scary to be that exposed, but in saying that we’re always ourselves when we’re on TV shows and stuff anyway, so hopefully everyone will just see us as normal people. The producers say they want the show to be as unedited as possible, but hopefully there won’t be too many embarrassing moments. We can’t expect any catfights amongst the girls, then? No! I know the press would love it if we were at each other’s throats all the time, but in reality we all get on really well. There are never any big arguments or crying scenes. You come across as the feisty member of The Saturdays. How would the others describe you? The first thing they’d say is that I’m a massive flirt! Other than that, I think they would say that I always tell it like it is; no matter what question I’m asked, I’ll always give an honest answer. The Saturdays album Headlines is out now

“I went to stage school because the Spice Girls got their big break by answering an advert in The Stage and I thought ‘well, this must be the way to do it’” Hat’s off: Marina’s quirky fashion sense is renowned.
Hi Marina. You’ve been playing loads of festivals this summer; having fun? I did 28 last year, so I know the drill pretty well. I’m better known this time round, though, so it’s much easier. It’s nice being ferried around and the crowds I’m performing to are bigger because they know the album. ‘Robot’ and ‘Hollywood’ are the favourites; everyone really gets into them so it’s been great. What’s it like being away from home for so long? I’m not really one for getting homesick. I’ve always been someone who gets anxious if I’m not doing anything. It feels strange to me when I’m sitting round at home too much, so I actually love being on the road and having a purpose.
part of me. I love Greek culture because it’s less submissive, and as a nation the people are very comforable about expressing themselves. The Welsh side of me is harder to define. I’m a singer, which is obviously something Wales is well known for. I suppose I have a more reticent side to me, which could be defined as typically British. In the UK we often don’t really say what we think. Not like here in Ireland - Irish people will always tell you exactly what’s on their mind! You’ve really made your mark with the popularity of your album The Family Jewels. Is being a successful musician something you’ve always wanted? Definitely. There was always a drive in me that I can’t remember being without. I really wanted to make it. For a long time I didn’t dare admit my ambition because I was afraid people would ridicule me, but when I turned 18 I told everyone I was heading to London to try and make something of myself in the music world. There’s a lot of aspiring singers out there. Was it tough getting to where you are now?
You’re well know for your quirky fashion sense. Where so you get your clothes? I do a little shopping on ebay and hunt around vintage shops quite a bit; it’s amazing some of the great clothes you can pick up for a really affordable price. Occasionally I’ll splash out on something if I really love it. l bought this fantastic pair of Givenchy black leather wedges and I felt a little bit guilty about the price, but I know I’ll wear them for years. You grew up in Wales but your dad’s Greek. How does that mixed heritage come out in your personality? I’m split down the middle. My Greek side is definitely the more fiery and expressive
It took a lot of work. I reseached how my biggest idols had made it, read every Madonna biography going and everything about the Spice Girls, thinking that there must be a template you could follow that would lead to success. I even went to stage school because the Spice Girls got their big break by answering an advert in The Stage and I thought ‘well, this must be the way to do it’. But I was wrong. I’m not really a ‘jazz hands’ musical theatre type of girl, and what I learned in those early days was that there’s no clear path to fame. So eventually I just starting focusing on my writing, and making my music better, and that’s when things started to take off. You’ve been in the limelight for the past 12 months. Is it everything you expected? There havn’t been too many surprises yet. I’ve been an overthinker my whole life, so in some ways I’ve been prepared for what a life in the music indursty would be like. Plus, I’m not really into the whole fame game thing. You’ll never see me falling out of clubs or anything, becasue I’m here to
do one thing and I don’t want to be featured in the press for anything other than my music. If you court it and live your life solely for the fame, then you’re going to attract that type of attention, and I just don’t relate to that kind of desire.
“For a long time I didn’t dare admit my ambition because I was afraid people would ridicule me” Your live shows have been highly praised by the music press, and you’re set to play Derry’s Nerve Centre in October. What can we expect? I want the people who turn up to my gigs to feel like friends and family. I hate the idea of the ‘fan’. I love talking to them and try to make it a really intimate experence no matter what size the venue is. I absolutely love playing in Ireland; they are just the best gigs. Again I think it has to do with that expressive side of the people here. They’re not afraid to really thow themselves into the moment, and I love that because I’m a very open person and I love the way they respond to the drama of my show.
The music industry is very competitive. What do you think is the best way to achieve a long and successful career? I think it’s really important to isolate yourself, keep yourself in a bubble. I like being removed from things, and I don’t think you should worry too much about keeping up with current trends. The best pop music is never inspired by listening to other music anyway. Keep being passionate and stimulated, and you can only do that if you truly believe you were born to do it, which I do.
Marina and the Diamonds play the Nerve Centre, Derry, on Friday 29th October
If only all apprenticeships were as cool as this! Pure asks the cast of Disney’s blockbuster about their first ever jobs...
My first job was working in a morgue, or mortuary as we call it in England. It was a hospital mortuary, and my job was to wheel the cadavers down from the wards, and fill in the tags with all the relevant information. It was dreary, and boring, but it paid really well, considering the amount of work involved.
After I graduated college, I was hired beneath the ground floor by the advertising firm of MacManus John & Adams, which had offices near Detroit, where I grew up. My parents wanted me to become a doctor, lawyer or dentist. I wanted instead to be a low paid employee in the mail room of an advertising agency that handled the General Motors account. I wanted an outlet for my creativity, but I couldn’t afford to live anywhere else but at home in Michigan. I worked hard, doing mail runs on weekends, and people started to notice that I was always around doing my job. Soon they allowed me to produce my own commercials, and I did one which spoofed Bonnie and Clyde to sell Pontiac automobiles. It was mentioned by Time magazine and won a few awards, and the big New Yorkbased advertising firm of BBD&O then hired me, where I continued to learn how to tell stories in 60 seconds or less.
My first job was selling popcorn and candy at the Fairfax movie theater in Los Angeles. I would watch movies there and try to figure out how I was going to go from the popcorn stand to the screen.
My first job, believe it or not, was working for Dick Clark when I was 17 years old on a TV special called Whatever Became of... It was insanely cool. So cool that I’m not even mentioning my real first job picking dead azaleas off my neighbor’s bushes for ten dollars.
At 15, my first job ever was to dress up as Strawberry Shortcake at my local supermarket. So every weekend I would get into my costume and parade through the aisles of the supermarket with the massive plastic head balancing on my shoulders! It got so hot and claustrophobic in that suit that the following summer, I upgraded my job to drive-through teller at Burger King!
When I was a very skinny, strange looking 12-year-old boy I was murdered. Yup. That’s right, murdered. By an orange gelatinous monster in a swimming pool. During the mid 1950s. If any of this sounds insane it’s because my first job was appearing in an episode of the Nickelodeon show Are You Afraid of The Dark? entitled “The Tale Of The Deadman’s Float.” It was awesome but I won’t lie—I reeked of chlorine for a long time. And I screamed like a girl. A very skinny, strange looking girl—with a super high voice.
It was a paper round. I was the highestpaid paper boy because I did an extra three rounds on Sundays.

Three lads from Magherafelt, plus instruments, plus Burberry equals awesome It can definitely be said that Northern Ireland is becoming a more fashionable environment to live in. The brands available in our department stores and individual retailers can be compared to to the best cities around the world. Basically, what I’m trying to say is that there is no excuse for dressing badly, not everything has to be designer, but it is nice to have a few items from the higher end of the market. This brings me on to my online discovery for this month! Youtube is a wealthy pool of music when it comes to watching great bands perform acoustic covers, There’s nothing better than hearing one of your favourite power bands from America and beyond tone down their greatest hits with nothing but a guitar and minimal percussion - Well, actually there is, it’s so much better when it’s local grown talent! South Derry rockers, ‘General Fiasco’ have certainly been taking the music scene by storm, and they’re even dipping their toes into the fashion pond. I’m not talking about being featured in their local shops at home for an advertisement feature, I’m talking about exclusively performing as part of the ‘Burberry Acoustic’ sessions. For those of you who haven’t stumbled across the band they are an indie rock group
from Magherafelt, Northern Ireland. Since their formation in 2007, they have toured with Fighting With Wire, The Wombats, One Night Only, The Pigeon Detectives, The Enemy, Jet and Kids In Glass Houses and more recently supported the mighty ‘Snow Patrol’ in Ward park, Bangor. They released their debut album, Buildings, on 22 March 2010. It is definitely worth a listen! You can check all of their studio work and a few of their acoustic treats via their website and myspace; www. generalfiasco.com. Their acoustic cover of sinking ships is absolutely fantastic, and features the three piece from Magherafelt wearing some of this seasons finest Burberry threads. The style fits in with the forever lasting trend of military with lead singer Owen Strathern wearing a green trench that will roughly set you back £1,500. They are one of the most intense bands from this Island that I’ve seen play live, and they hold great control over their audiences, and if you want to experience this, why not go see them on October 3 at the Nerve Centre, Derry. Tickets are priced at eight quid which is a complete bargain, I’d advise you to get down to the Box office because I’m sure they’re flying out the door! For those of you who have tickets, enjoy the gig and I’ll see you there! T www.burberry.com/acoustic

HOW TO: The art of the creasless tie One of my pet hates is a creased tie, they are designed to be crisp, and to add some definition to your look, if you’re like me, you’ll always have a favourite tie, so here are some tips to keeping your tie in tip top condition. 1. Before ironing the tie, check the tag on the necktie; it will normally display the recommended iron temperature. (Cool settings for silk and polyester ties, medium heat settings for wool ties, higher heat settings for cotton fabric ties.) 2.Put a clean white cloth (cotton or linen) on the ironing board before laying down your necktie, backside up.Start from the bottom and make your way to the top. (Do it in small portions). Let the steam from the iron pass over the tie while you smooth the creases out with your hand. 3.Lift the cloth every so often to check whether the tie shows any colour changes – if it does immediately lower the iron’s temperature. When the back is finished, turn the tie over and then press the front side using the cloth. 4.Once finished, immediately hang the tie to cool before storing or wearing. Remember, never completely flatten your necktie with the iron – it is supposed to keep its tubular texture and shape.
Watch yourself fool An accessory says a lot about you. First impressions are lasting ones, from your shoes, your fragrance (see above), to your belt to the time piece on your wrist can give someone an indication to about what you want from life, and your personality. This month we focus on watches, and have chosen three timers picked by myself (Tim Ferris), Tim McCann (Head designer at Pure Inc.) and Noel Heaney (Designer, Pure Inc.). We’ve tiered the price point from cheap, medium to bank breaker. Tim F - U-Boat. “I own a U-Boat, I’ll not lie, it was a gift from an old employer, the price tags are very hefty - but in my opinion, worth it! They have a large selection of the watches have massive faces. These watches say ‘Take me seriously’ ”. Prices starting at around £1200. www.u-boatwatch.co.uk.
Noel - Casio. “A throw back to the 80’s, this retro watch is not only “gold”, it has a stopwatch, an alarm, a light up screen, and it is water resistant up to 50 metres, which is something I look for in a watch.” Available at many retailers priced at around £40.00. www.casio.co.uk
Tim M -Tokyo Flash. “I always wanted to be an astronaut and it reminds me of a three bar heater which takes me back to my caravan days as a youth”. Around £150. www.tokyoflash.com
out their second ab o tri sh Iri e th to ks ea sp Pure eir home country album and their return to th Hip Hip Hurray ‘The Script’ are back! They have just announced some UK dates including playing at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena in March, and the talk of the town is that everyone is super excited! They’re back with the release of their new album, Pure! talks to Mark Sheehan the band’s guitarist about the new music and a return to the UK and Ireland. The title of the new album is Science and Faith. “I think when people see the name they will think it’s a provocative title,” acknowledges the band’s guitarist Mark Sheehan; “Three Irish lads talking about religion, But the two subjects we tend to avoid are politics and religion. They’re conversation-stoppers.” The title, it transpires, is metaphorical. “We tend to write songs with a social conscience, about our lives. Guys in their mid-twenties are going through certain things. Science and Faith is about the struggle in relationships between men and women. Men think they are very scientific; women are more into the emotional concept of faith. Man has this inner struggle of logic. (The conflict between the sexes] is indicative of what this record is about.” Unlike many bands about to release their second album, The Script are not talking up any radical change of direction. Mark sees a virtue in continuity. “We got the chance to record and produce our first record ourselves – taking that on again was massive for us. What we have done is (create] what we could class as our own sound. Making mistakes, you stumble across a sound of your own. “This record is more of a continuation for us rather than a huge transition. “It’s not a techno album,” he chuckles. “It’s what we know.” The huge success of The Script’s first album – 1.8 million sales and counting – prompted the trio to be declared “Ireland’s biggest band since
U2”. Mark finds the comparison flattering but bewildering. “As humbling as it is, how can anybody say that? The fact that we are Irish and carry instruments is the reason why we are compared with them.” The Script adopt a similarly level-headed approach to their business dealings. “As success comes your record company is always willing to splash the chequebook about, but we’re savvy guys,” says Mark. “We managed ourselves for the first 18 months, we negotiated our own record deal. We wanted to keep control of the record close to us. We self-produced it. Although there was a massive budget available to us we did not play with it – on purpose. “Having a record company is sometimes like having a bank that can give you money. That doesn’t mean we have to take it.” Much of the band’s savvy stems from the band’s experience. Mark and singer Danny O’Donoghue’s musical partnership began in 1996 when they were both members of the moderately successful group MyTown. Hence as songwriters they have a long-established understanding. “What we really hold strong to is what we both don’t like,” says Mark. “He knows what I hate and I know what he hates.” Through knowing each other’s dislikes they’ve built up a strong rapport. “When we play together it feels like it’s one sound. We play in time so much that we are not just thinking about
ourselves. We are thinking about the overall.” After the break-up of MyTown in 2001 Mark and Danny went off to North America to try their hands as songwriters and producers for hire. To their own surprise, they wound up working with R&B big hitters such as Dallas Austin, Montell Jordan and Teddy Riley. “We are big R&B and hip-hop fans,” admits Mark. “We’re susceptible to anything that’s good. We’re open to many different styles. When we were writing for other artists in America we were writing on demand. “As a struggling producer I would’ve remixed Old Macdonald Had a Farm, to be honest. (Equally) had somebody given me the budget and said, ‘Give us what you like’, I would have. “When we finally got the opportunity to write for ourselves that’s was what we thought was good. That’s what The Script is. It’s such a blessing to be able to do that now.” Now Mark, Danny and drummer Glen Power have ‘broken’ the USA in their own right, with their single Breakeven notching up a million sales. To coincide with the release of Science and Faith, the band will be touring the UK. Having played in Belfast on a few occassions (“the crowds are amazing”), the band are looking forward to returning to Northern Ireland. Given the chance, they’d like to sample some local hospitality. “It’s generally down to people at the place you are going to,” Mark says. “Sometimes they want you to feel as much at home as possible. They bring you to local restaurants. Hopefully our return to belfast will be the same. They’ll maybe take you to a pub and get you drunk. “We’re three Irishmen,” he laughs, “what else are we going to do?” The Script will be appearing in The Odyssey Arena on 7th March 2011, tickets on sale now.

Got ink? Pure bust the myths of the tattoo process Miami Ink, London Ink, LA ink probably television shows that you’ve tuned into in the last year or so, and is living proof of the TATTOO BOOM!. Love them or hate them, Tattoos are becoming more and more available and considered stylish as an accessory to many looks. Deciding on what to get and when to get it can be a very nerve racking time. There are a lot of myths about the tattoo process and how it is done, so PURE! have decided to tell you about tattooing. What is a tattoo?
A tattoo is a puncture wound, made deep in your skin, that’s filled with ink. It’s made by penetrating your skin with a needle and injecting ink into the area, usually creating some sort of design. What makes tattoos so longlasting is they’re so deep — the ink isn’t injected into the epidermis (the top layer of skin that you continue to produce and shed throughout your lifetime). Instead, the ink is injected into the dermis, which is the second,
deeper layer of skin. Dermis cells are very stable, so the tattoo is practically permanent. Tattoos used to be done manually — that is, the tattoo artist would puncture the skin with a needle and inject the ink by hand. Though this process is still used in some parts of the world, most tattoo shops use a tattoo machine these days (like the gun pictured). A tattoo machine is a handheld electric instrument that uses a tube and needle system. On one end is a sterilized needle, which is attached to tubes that contain ink. A foot switch is used to turn on the machine, which moves the needle in and out while driving the ink about 1/8 inch (about 3 millimeters) into your skin. Depending on the thickness of the design more than 1 needle can be injected at one time, for example shading features a few needles. Most tattoo artists know how deep to drive the needle into your skin, but not going deep enough will produce a ragged tattoo, and going too deep can cause bleeding and intense pain. Get-

If you are going for a large design it may take a few sittings. Although I have a few tattoos if you are unsure about getting inked, I’d recommend a temporary tattoo or stencil and see how you like it, Tattoo
artists are very approachable and will talk to you about anything that may be worrying, Temporary tattoos are becoming a fashion accessory at the minute too with fashion houses releasing their own temporary tattoos (Chanel as seen on Whit Port below, priced at around £40 for 55 tattoos).

What do you think about ink? People will always be entitled to their opinion about tattoos, so I consulted with our favourite social network site Facebook to see what people think about the marmite subject. You know the feeling you get, when you just know that someone or somethings going to be big? I had this feeling last summer. The tenth of June in New York City, I’ve always kept a diary and record things I’ve discovered, One of the ‘IT’ things of last year for me was an american band ‘The Drums’ and they’re really hitting the UK with a bang (pardon the pun), This music will make you feel great! Even though this isn’t my usual practise for reviewing a gig or sound, I’d like to share my diary entry/review with you all. We also hear from ‘The Drums’ drummer Connor Hanwick about touring, the hype and bands that make them churn out their glorious vibe... JUNE 10, 2009, THE ANNEX, NEW YORK. Sometimes you forget that music can be happy. For a week and a half, I’ve been a drag, in a serious rut working long days never finding enough hours in the day. As with many people, the music I listen to reflects my moods, and to be honest I wasn’t listening to many energentic positive beats, But my encounter with the drums changed this... Wednesday had the makings of another somber night—dark and rainy in New York, and preceded by another long day at the office. Sitting at home, drinking a beer, and watching junk TV, I somehow found the motivation to leave my apartment, venture out into the rain, and catch my friends The Stationary Set play a show at The Annex (a small underground club) Their set was great, but all too brief what lay ahead was an introduction to a really fun sound.
After listening to a few bands at The Annex, a three piece took to the the stage. From start to finish, they play a totally refreshing set that shed a bright joyful light over the entire room. It’s not that they have an original sound—they don’t at all—but what they do have is that indescribable special something. There’s no question at all that former Elkland singer Jonathan Pierce’s new band is going to be immensely popular before the summer is over. Their simple, yet infectiously catchy songs about things like surfing marry the fun of ‘50s surf rock with the energy of 80s synth pop. Comparisons to The Killers first record and New Zealand’s Cut Off Your Hands will definitely dominate reviews of The Drums, and that’s not a bad thing. Further enhancing their set was Pierce’s performance. Dancing throughout the entire set, Pierce’s vocals and presence exude a feeling of bliss that envelopes a crowd. This is exactly what I needed. When the backlash starts , critics will come down on The Drums for not being original, and for playing songs that lack the literal prowess of other indie bands, but sometimes after watching 9 or 10 existential foreign indie films, it’s really great to watch classic repeats like the Kindergarten Cop. On being an American band… “I feel at the moment with the UK and America, ones up and ones down. There are not a lot of bands in the UK which impress me whereas five years ago I thought all the bands in America were crap. And ten years ago there were bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Strokes who everyone wanted to sound like so it really fluctuates. I feel
like there are some really good US bands like The Smith Westerns, a really good band called Girls. There’s basically just some really great music coming from there and it’s really great that we get to represent that by appearing on TV and venues throughout the UK.” On the hype…“We don’t really let that affect us. We only started over a year ago. We just keep our heads down and don’t allow that to affect our creative process. It’s amazing that people come out to see us play though.” From the first time I listened to them, I really enjoyed their energy, and it’s great to see them moving into the UK music scene, as it definitely does seperate the garage bands from the commercial hits, For those of you who haven’t had the chance to listen, download, youtube, spotify use any means to get these happy go lucky sounds coming out if your speakers. You can catch them live on our lovely island, November 30 in Belfast (Mandela Hall) and December 1 in Dublin (The Academy). Tickets are available on www.ticketmaster.ie and priced at £14.00 (bargain!)
LOCAL TALENT
Split personality: Vincent shines in the video for Django Django’s single ‘WOR’
Given the current economic climate, deciding to forego a steady job as an architect to pursue a full-time career in pop music is a brave move. But as friends of Derry man Vincent Neff will tell you, tenacity is one of his defining characteristics. Vincent, 31, grew up in the Templegrove area of the city, but is currently living in London and enjoying his role as lead singer of up-and-coming electronica four-piece Django Django. As a school pal of his sister Jennifer, I knew Vincent from a young age. He was a bit of a showman even then, so it came as no surprise when she told me he was making waves in the music industry. “I left work for good in February,” says Vincent. “We had a deadline to get our first album finished so I wanted to give it my full attention. When I told my parents, they were really supportive; they trust me to try something if I think it’s worthwhile.” The gamble seems to be paying off. Their witty and melodious repertoire of dance-infused indie pop has seen them tipped for great things by the music press, and in addition to making the line up of this year’s One Big Weekend and Glastonbury festivals, Django Django
have landed a recording contract that will see the release of their debut album in February of next year. Plus, their music has also won over the guys at Coca Cola. A four-minute ad for the soft drink giant’s latest product, ‘Burn Ignite’, uses the Django Django song ‘WOR’ as the soundtrack (check it out on YouTube). Vincent and his bandmates have been friends since they met at Edinburgh University almost ten years ago. “We’re all really good mates,” he says, “and we’re pretty self-sufficient when it comes to the band. We produce our own music, me and Dave, the drummer, write the songs, and Dave, Tommy and Jimmy are all artists so they create the videos.” The guys have been gigging all over the UK, but there’s still one crucial stage that Vincent has yet to grace - his home town. He says: “I have a promoter friend who’s based back home, so he’s going to arrange a gig for us in Derry when the album comes out in February. “It’ll be the first time I’ve sung here since I was in the St Eugene’s Cathedral Choir as a boy!” Check out Django Django at www.myspace.com/djangotime

The Social Network
Paranormal Activity 2
(Starring Justin Timberlake, Jessie Eisenberg & Andrew Garfield)
(Starring: Kate Featherstone)
This is a movie about the world’s most famous social networking site, Facebook. Harvard undergrad and computer genius Mark Zuckerberg sits down at his computer and heatedly begins working on a new idea. In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication. A mere six years and 500 million friends later, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history... but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications.
In 2007 this film broke new ground as it portrayed a poltergeist haunting and had cinema goers around the world screaming from their seats in fear. It is filmed through a series of handheld cameras and CCTV and tells the story of a couple investigating a haunting in their home. If this film is anything like its original then its a cert that many ‘hard men’ from Derry will be found shaking at the Omniplex.

letters to juliet (cert: PG)
This is Hollywood’s latest attempt to make “the action movie that also appeals to girls” / “the romcom that also appeals to boys”. Recently dumped and on holiday with her parents, Jen meets Spencer (Ashton Kutcher aka secret agent), a man desperate to pack in the killings and lead a quiet life. They marry and move to what looks like the set of The Stepford Wives but their neighbours are sleeper agents hell bent on taking down Kutcher.
This is most definitely a film for a cosy Friday night in with the Mrs – chickflick.com! In this film, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) has found love and whilst on a romantic trip to Verona she stumbles across a square where unhappy lovers leave letters to the lady of the film’s title in the superstitious hope that Shakespeare’s most famous heroine will ease their heartbreak.

Russell Brand plays a junkie rock star with an ego and poor Aaron Green has 72 hours to get him to LA. Needless to say, this task proves to be like herding up a team a drunken elephants. A great, feel good, laugh out loud comedy which proves that Russell Brand has a talent for comedic acting and that his part as the same character in ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ was no fluke.
An unlucky burglar who whilst raiding a house, encounters a masked man whose splatter-happy contraptions have turned the house into a giant booby trap. Acid, knives, nails, spiky things, meat-cleavers, barbed wire, fish hooks, bear traps - the masked villain here is something of a MacGyver, and obviously takes a certain pride in his inventiveness.

Teenage Dream
When the Killers decided to take a year out frontman kept on writing but this time with solely Him in mind. The result was Flamingo, his first solo effort since the band announced a hiatus. Flowers’ distinct vocals and typical rock style shine throughout each of the tracks, two of which feature the amazing Jenny Lewis. The album is definitely a grower.
Littered with floor-filling moments and co-produced by some of the brightest names in the industry, Teenage Dream is the sensational new release from Katy Perry. Featuring new single “California Gurls”, the US starlet’s third release features twelve slices of perfect pop magic. The album is pure bubble gum pop with a little wit and heavy innuendo.

Since the release We Started nothing in 2008 which sold 4 million copies world wide, the duo have had further success with that’s ‘not my name’ and ‘Shut Up and Let Me Go’ . ROOM (Paperback) Emma Donoghue

This extraordinary novel has been hailed as one of the best books of 2010, and for good reason. Set in the bleak world of a sparse 12 x 12 room inhabited by a kidnapped sex slave and her young son, the premise is harrowing, but Donoghue’s sublime flair for storytelling makes this a riveting and suspenseful read. Told through the eyes of five-year-old Jake, horrific events are filtered through his innocent perspective, and we’re reminded of the beauty in the everyday things we take for granted by virtue of their notable absence in Jake’s restricted existence. The child narrator device may not be original - see The Boy in the Striped Pajamas or The Lovely Bones - but Donoghue’s blistering insight and sparkling prose is deeply refreshing.
Pieces of my Heart (Paperback) Sinead Moriarty The tag ‘chick lit’ is all too often used derogatorily, but it takes great skill to craft a novel that’s light as a feather yet still packs a punch emotionally. Sinead Moriarty’s sixth book, dealing with the thorny issue of teenage anorexia, is a perfect blend of humour and pathos, and shows wonderful insight into the dynamic of the Irish family.
The book of Tomorrow (Paperback) Cecelia Ahern Gifted storyteller Cecilia Ahern’s engrossing tale of a spoiled little rich girl forced to slum it when the family fortune is lost is a riveting read. There’s a fairytale element in the form of a mystical book filled with secrets, but Ahern pulls off this risky plot device with aplomb.

With her eccentrically soulful songs set to take the pop world by storm, the wonderfully quirky Kirsty Almeida gives Pure her unique take on the music industry, her new album and the joys of marine biology! Hi Kirsty. You’d been a jobbing musician for a while before you were offered a record deal. Was that frustrating? I was just about to give it all up and go to Hawaii to be a marine biologist! I’d been doing a lot of function work, gigging in jazz clubs etc and making good money, but there was really no sense of fulfilment in it. So I was out in Hawaii visiting my friend, who’s a marine biologist, and I was really into what she was doing. She suggested I move over and re-train! I promised myself I would do one more album completely by myself, and then it was ‘off to Hawaii’, but then that’s when things started to happen for me musically. How did things take a turn for the better? I decided that, no matter how bad, I would write a song every day and post it on Myspace. The fact I was doing something so unusual seemed to give the whole thing a bit of momentum and people started checking out my stuff. Then I was contacted by the guy who’s now my manager, and soon after came the record deal with Decca.

Record deals aren’t easy to come by. Did you pop the champagne when the contracts were signed? To be honest, I never actively tried to get a deal because I find the music industry is so far apart from the actual music scene. There are loads of great musicians out there that the industry doesn’t even pick up on because they’re so caught up in trying to create clones of Amy Winehouse and other big commercial successes, and I didn’t want to be a part of that. And even now that I have a record deal myself, there’s still a big part of me that questions whether or not it’s something that I really want! How would you define the Kirsty Almeida sound to anyone who hasn’t heard your stuff yet? I’ve tried time and time again to define my style and still haven’t pinned it down. The album is pretty eclectic, and draws on lots of different styles, from world music and jazz to mainstream pop and classic rock. At its heart, though, it’s a storytelling album, and is basically a snippet of my
life during the two months it took me to write it. Pure Blue Green has some weird and wonderful lyrics... I’m really good friends with words. I have this crazy headache thing that I get now and again. It’s not dangerous or anything, but I lose my ability to speak and the words come out wrong. Somehow, though, there’s a certain poetry to the words that do come out, however mixed up they are. I think my head’s just wired up differently! Your video for the single ‘Spider’ is very theatrical and you wear some pretty ‘out there’ outfits which, for a former art student, is no surprise... I make a lot of my own clothes, and at the minute I’m working with the designer Mrs Jones on some outfits. She made Kylie’s white jumpsuit (from the video for ‘Can’t get you out of my head’), so that should be interesting. I have an idea for a costume I can actually play - a guy who makes musical instruments is working on a skirt made of strings for me! You worked with the producer Youth, who has worked with big acts such as U2 and The Verve, on the album. How was that? Youth brought a completely fresh perspective. He was able to come along and look at things from a distance and say ‘this would work well’. He’s such a cool guy, and I have to say I didn’t meet one girl who didn’t say ‘wow – he is really attractive!’ Is it important to you that the new album is successful? I really hope it does well because it means I’ll have the opportunity to do more things. I love having Manchester as my base, but I want to get around the world as much as I can, playing and doing what I love. My best friend’s from Ireland and I’ve spent a lot of time over here in the past, so hopefully I’ll make it here for a live gig soon. Kirsty’s album Pure Blue Green is out now.
KYLIE MINOGUE
Mighty Aphrodite Pure gets up close and personal with the diva of pop herself, Kylie Minogue...
From humble beginnings as feisty tomboy Charlene Ramsey in Neighbours, Kylie now occupies an elevated position in pop royalty circles that only the queen herself, Madonna, outranks.
Hi Kylie! Congratulations on Aphrodite. Amazingly, it’s your eleventh album... It’s kind of unbelievable. I thought the tenth album, X, was a benchmark but this one has just been amazing. I wouldn’t care what number you called it. It’s been the most amazing experience. You worked closely with the electronica maestro Stuart Price, who was executive producer of the album. How was that? Well for me this was a first, to have an executive producer. It was just the best experience, and funnily enough I think it’s the most cohesive album I’ve had since the beginning of my career, back in the PWL days, where by its very nature made it cohesive. There’s a lot to be said for working with different producers and trying different stuff which has worked really well for me in the past but I definitely wanted someone to tie this together, as Stuart has done so beautifully, so that it existed as a real body of work. What was it about this album and this project that made you want to do it differently to before? The idea to do it differently was at the forefront of my mind on this album because I’d had a little niggle with the previous two albums. But the added reason that all of this came around was because of my dear friend Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters, who was working in Stuart’s studio as I had started recording my album in various studios around the world. He praised Stuart highly and loves me dearly,
and basically pestered me and said “you’ve got to do this, it’ll be so amazing!”, so I’ve got much to thank Jake for.
Do you regard this album as a return to the dance floor? Or did you never leave? Uh, it’s been described as a return to the dance floor; I don’t think I ever totally left but it is a return to form, I’d say. Was there any point whilst recording the album when you thought ‘yeah, this is it’? That was the first song Stuart and I wrote together, we had our notebooks at the ready; Stuart’s was a very special one and mine was from the 99 cent store! One of the titles was ‘Angel’ and Stuart asked me ‘have you ever had a song called Angel?’ I literally had to think back because one would imagine I had done so, but no, we hadn’t. So that was our first song; in a tiny little studio in New York, very compact. It was nice. I’d already recorded some songs elsewhere; then we started to work in New York and knew we would finish everything here. Then I did some more recording in other places, and I think it’s shown that there’s a lovely spirit with this album where other producers have been very generous to send everything here for us to kind of pick at, which shows enormous trust and faith in Stuart and his ability. What’s been amazing has been having everything here and seeing the little differences and little changes that can make the biggest difference in a song. It’s been phenomenal to observe and to feel those changes and how the album has ended up.
Electronica mastro Stuart Price who was executive producer on Kylie’s new album
On a really great album, the chemistry between a recording artist and their producer somehow always seems to shine through. Did you get a sense of that with Stuart? I think we’ve been connected some time before because we just got along straight away. Thoughts about the album aside - and I’ve learnt an awful lot from working with Stuart on this project - it was just fun, he really, really made it fun for me and I felt secure.
“There’s something of a celestial feel throughout the album... I’m always attracted to those ethereal, starry, universal ideas”
What about the tracks themselves, were there an excess number of tracks? And how did you pull them together? Hmm yes, there was! Trying to decide which tracks made it needs a highly technical device which you find in studios - the whiteboard. There reached a turning point where we said “ok no more writing – let’s just focus on what we’ve got’. And Stuart was really determined that it was 12 tracks, forty-ish minutes, being that precise about it. He really was quite strict. ‘Looking For An Angel’, ‘Cupid’, ‘Aphrodite’… do you think there’s a celestial feel to the album? There is something of a celestial feel throughout the album, definitely not on every track but I think we tapped into that, on the first song we did together ‘Looking For An Angel’. Personally, I’m always attracted to those ethereal, starry, universal ideas. What was the most fun that you had on the record? Stuart and I would be listening in our own world
and there’d be the point in the song when the hands would go up! Hands up = good reaction. And of course there was the ‘Dolly Parton Litmus Test’ which I’ve got to tell you has travelled, I’ve been asked so much about that. The soon to be trademarked and copyrighted ‘Dolly Parton Litmus Test”’ is a way of testing a song’s viability as a song without production. Stuart would get his acoustic guitar out and we’d sing. According to him, I do the best Dolly Parton impersonation there is on the planet, ever! We figured out that if that worked for any song, and we could see Dolly doing it; then on top of that we could sit down with a guitar and do it like that as well - the song was probably destined for good things. It became, as you say, a sort of litmus test for each song on the record!
that you had been through? I think a lot of what I do now is, in some way, coloured by the experience I had with illness. I guess I was just feeling like expressing joy at this point. I’d written songs more about that period in my life either on or for the last album, so I didn’t feel like going through those again. This was about this moment, this time, and what a happy experience this has been for me.
Was this one of the most fun albums you’ve ever made then? Yep. Without a doubt!
What’s your relationship with love at the moment? Jeez! That’s a massive question! A lot of people question why so many pop songs are about love, why operas are so written, why paintings are painted, why we cry during really silly commercials. Love in all its various forms challenges us all the time and I guess you could say this was a little love affair with this album. I loved coming to work and I loved working with Stuart, and I think that feeling comes through on the album.
This is a much lighter album. Was that some sort of reaction to the darker times

(Winner of BBC Sound, Critics Choice Award at The BRITs, an MTV European Music Award and winner of the BT Digital Music Awards). Ellie’s last album stormed the charts and October will see Ellie take to the road for a 21-date headline tour of the UK, her biggest to date. All her previous UK shows this year have completely sold out, so the tour offers an opportunity for fans that may have missed out earlier in the year to catch her superb live show. Pure’s David Kavanagh chats to Ellie to hear all about living life in the fast lane and her future plans ... Hi Ellie, Since interviewing You last, you have won the BBC sound awards and the Critics choice at the Brit Awards, how has this changed your life? It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride but I’m still in my own little world. I’ve been rehearsing a lot and recording in America so it’s
been good.
for it all to start all over again.
How are you finding your new celebrity status? Celebritys really weird ... I definitely don’t feel like that. I just sort of go with it really. I’ve been recording yesterday and rehearsing all day; so really what I’m just supposed to be doing. There’s nothing celebrity about that, but I like it that way!
What particular song that made the crowd go crazy on the festival scene? For some reason the crowd went mental every time I started drumming. I don’t know why! It’s just one of those things people get hyped up and excitable. I think maybe people weren’t expecting it. It was the high point at the end of the set. I’m playing full drums on the next tour though, so we will have to see how that goes.
For any Ellie-Virgins out there, how would you describe your musical sound? It’s hard because my voice can be so unusual. It’s kind of electro pop but with hope, feelings and passion. You were really well received on the festival circuit, how was that? Yeah it was brilliant! Me and my band had the most fun doing the festivals. We were in Norway, then Switzerland and Glastonbury. I think people knew that’s where I was meant to be, it really was fun. That’s really where my heart really lies ... performing in front of people. I really can’t wait for next summer
You’re playing Belfast ... is it your first Northern Ireland performance? No I played Belfast once before and it was really great, brilliant! I’ve read you have collaborated with Tinie Tempah, how was that? We’d been talking for quite a while about working with together as we both liked each other. It kept coming up in each-other’s interviews that we both wanted to work together, but we didn’t have the time. So finally we found a day where I could get in the
studio with him and the rest is history. I see that you have co-written with Diana Vickers how did that come about? That was before I had my record deal ... I had a publishing deal and I was friends with the Guy Sigsworth who produced her latest record. He asked if I
wanted to come down and do some writing and I did; Diana was there we just can talked and wrote together it was lovely. She’s a really nice girl. Ellie is playing at the Ulster Hall in Belfast on 28th November 2010, tickets now on sale.

The wonder of Hughes
Hughes Insurance has announced the relocation of its Derry branch to Shipquay Street. The new branch move to the main square in the heart of the city will offer a more accessible location making it easier for the people of Derry to drop in. This announcement follows the news that 100,000 local motorists are now insured with Hughes Insurance meaning 1 in 6 Derry motorists are now with the company. This continued branch network growth is aimed at making it as easy as possible for customers to deal with Hughes Insurance. Research has shown that Northern Ireland people value local presence when it comes to their insurance. Hughes Insurance has invested over £1million in widening the range of contact options made available to their customers. This includes new branch openings, improved telephone call handling and a new ‘quote and buy’ website at www.hughesinsurance.co.uk. Derry Branch Manager Gareth Finlay,
commented: “Over the years we have worked hard to build a brand which represents both value and great service. This is provided by local people in local branches. Hughes Insurance is the largest independent insurance broker in Northern Ireland and our size allows us to secure the best deals in the market with the widest range of insurance companies. Our branch expansion strategy enables us to bring this value to the high street.” Gareth Brady, Chief Executive of Hughes Insurance, added: “With over 30 years experience in the Northern Ireland market we understand our insurance customer’s needs. We also understand the importance of independence. Our customers know that when they are dealing with Hughes Insurance, they are dealing with a locally owned business that has remained independent.

Local teacher, turned business woman, Catherine Sproule, showcased her new business, Java Coffee Shop and Juice Bar on Derry’s Ferryquay Street recently with an official opening. I t’s all a far cry from her days when Catherine was Head of Department at Oakgrove College but it’s a challenge she is relishing. “The past few years have been a steep learning curve for me. I had absolutely no business experience at all and had to set about learning everything from scratch, from doing accounts to dealing with finance to managing staff.” But she has come out better and stronger and it certainly shows in her new business. Catherine also wants to get live music sessions started in the afternoon, so any aspiring musicians out there who want a city centre venue should get in touch.

Richmond thrives on Facebook
The Richmond Centre is the latest local enterprise to see an upsurge of traffic on its website thanks to the wonders of social networking. The shopping centre recently did a big push on its Facebook page promoting a weekly prize giveaway, and the move prompted a 70 percent rise in unique visits to their website compared to the month before. Richmond manager Fergal Rafferty told us: “Social networking has become an invaluable promotional tool in the era of digital communication, and the number of hits we received as a result of this latest promotion proves just how useful it is.” Richmond are now taking a leaf out of Pure’s book by offering, as we did, a special prize to their 1000th Facebook fan. And, because our generosity knows no bounds, we’re giving Pure’s 2000th fan a nice pressie too, so start clicking ‘like’ immediately if you haven’t already done so!

LOCAL TALENT
When you want something so bad, its all about hard work and determination. Pure talks to local athlete Aileen Morrison Local Derry woman Aileen Morrison is an absolute credit to herself, her family and our city. Aileen has spent only two years as a full time triathlete and in this short space of time she has climbed the international ladder. Aileen is an inspiration to the young people of the City. After leaving Thornhill College in 2000, she attended Liverpool Hope University, where she studied a degree in ‘Health and Physical Recreation’. Sports have always been a huge part of her life and from an early age was involved in local clubs within the city. Aileen spent 9 years teaching and coaching swimming with the City of Derry ASC, and completed her PE teaching practice in 2local schools where she encouraged both participation and competition in sport. For the past 3 years, Aileen
has been based in Lisburn and uses the Sports Institute at Jordanstown. While chatting to her on the phone the other day she pointed out that, “Normal life at the moment for me is, swim, bike, run, eat and sleep, with the odd day off but believe me they don’t come along very often.” Aileen is currently ranked 21st in the World, and holds 15th Slot in the Olympics, representing the Irish Olympic Team. Although the qualification process runs over 2 years, she still has one season to go and needs to keep her training consistent, to keep her on target! “Initially I didn’t think I would be good enough, but with a lot of hard work and determination to succeed, I did better than I thought I ever would” Aileen’s personality, determination and enthusiasm in both her own
sporting career and in encouraging the young athletes of the future, make her an excellent candidate to represent Derry and Ireland. This season, Aileen came 3rd in The World Cup Series Race in Hamburg, “It was an amazing feeling and it was incredible to be up there along with the top girls in the world, I feel like I’m in a dream right now - I seriously do. I don’t know what just happened,” Morrison said. “That is by far the best finish of my career. To be in a sprint with Emma and Lisa was unbelievable. I couldn’t be happier right now.” If you would like to keep up to date with Aileen’s performances and progress, and show this amazing young Triathlon some support you can do so at www. aileenmorrison.com

Invest in the best Why buying a great mattress is money well spent Why do so many of us consider spending money on a really great mattress to be a luxury? Given that we spend a third of our lives in the land of nod, the importance of a sound and restful sleep is sometimes grossly underestimated. Studies suggest that a fitful or interrupted sleep can have a massively detrimental effect on our waking day and is linked to a host of problems, from stress and fatigue to reduced alertness and mood swings. When you think about the fact that we’ll happily spend upwards of £1,000 on a new plasma TV or £600 on a set of shiny new golf clubs, it seems madness that we would short-change ourselves in the bedroom with cut-price mattresses that will do nothing but punish our bodies instead of investing in something that could be life-changing. A good mattress is essential to a good night’s sleep, and it’s important to pick one that suits your individual needs. Memory foam is considered the ultimate for a restful sleep, and we’ve found the Ferrari of all mattresses, the Hilton, available at Restex beds in Lisfannon. At 16 inches deep and with a four inch memory foam layer on both the top and bottom, this is definitely one bed you won’t want to get out of! There are many mattresses available at Restex that are manufactured on site and can also be made to suit your own needs. With 20 percent off selected mattresses at the minute, our advice is try them out and see which one is just right for you; a sneaky test drive in the Ferrari is definitely recommended.

Wall hangings are a great and easy way to add texture to your living space.
By Maria llebrez Dressing a living space that combines the simplicity of natural materials and the purity of straight lines can certainly be a challenge if you have never done it before. First things first, keep your coloour choice simple. Choose a muted palate, where dense whites are mixed with smokey greys and flat browns on walls and furnitures. Black should feature in your palate, breaking the general tone. For instance, here it is utilised on the ceiling to accentuate the way that it meets the walls, which are further dressed with hangings. Choose a feature piece of furniture such as this amazing reclaimed wooden table to create textures and add a focal point to the room. Next, choose your fabrics and furniture selections with a mix of modern and contemporary pieces, to create an eclectic look. Mix tradtional materials such as wood and snakeskin with the sharp tones of chrome to create clean lines in a minimalist setting. The tone of the walls will reflect light back onto the different elementsof the living space and segregate the living area from the dining. Select a large canvas that complements the colour palate of the walls and furniture. A modern artistic softly lit lamp can be the finishing touch to any room and create a relaxing amibeince at all times. Finally dress the room with a selection of fresh cut flowers and minimal modern ornaments to further accentuate the minimalistic yet homely feel of your living space. This clean, crisp and modern living space is easy to replicate and easy to maintain.
Mixing traditional and modern furnishings is an simple way of acheiving a clean minimalistic look. The sharp edges in the structure of the furniture used here epitomises this style.

FIT FOR A QUEEN
Whatever your income, your home can feel like a palace With the global recession still exerting a strong influence over the interiors scene, a major trend in home furnishings this autumn and winter is expected to revolve around the theme of homegrown opulence. With less bucks to spend on the likes of holidays, cars or even dining out, more time is being spent at home, and the urge to cocoon ourselves and luxuriate in megacomfortable domestic surrounds has never been stronger. No colour says opulence more than regal purple, which is why you’ll see a wealth of rich, plummy hues in all good homeware sections this season. Whether you opt for a decadent-looking velvety duvet or an
eye-catching coloured glass lamp, a hint of purple used in the right way can make you feel as if you’re living like a queen - even if your pay packet says differently! Be warned, though; this is a strong colour you’re working with, so make sure you contrast with more subtle hues, such as light grey, charcoal and eau de nil (a pale yellowish green that goes really well with purple). This luxuriant vibe will also rely heavily on chrome and brushed metallic accessories as well as lots of coloured glass and gothic knickknacks, so get into extravagence mode now and prepare for a season of splendour!

Keen to improve her questionable culinary skills, Mary-Anne McNulty headed out to My Little Kitchen cookery school for a class that proved both educating and entertaining... As a graduate of the Old El Paso school of cookery, I’ve always been jealous of folk who instinctively know how to produce great food from scratch without resorting to packets or jars. I love cooking, but I lack the confidence to go outside my comfort zone, so I tend to stick to tried and tested stuff like spaghetti bolognaise, chicken fajitas and prawn stir fry. Desperate to broaden my culinary horizons, I ventured out to My Little Kitchen cookery school in Greysteel for an evening class on how to prepare the perfect Thai supper. The school, run by husband and wife team Phil and Nuala Ford, gives enthusiastic amateurs the opportunity to improve their cooking skills in a variety of different styles, including Italian, Thai, seafood and Indian. Tonight’s class was run by Phil, a seasoned chef with more than 20 years experience under his belt. Phil worked out in Australia for many years, a country strongly influenced by Asian food, so his knowledge of Thai cooking is encyclopaedic.
“I thought we would merely get a small sample of each dish, but we enjoyed a four-course Thai banquet.” Phil’s teaching method is anything but stuffy, and the first surprise of the evening was just how interactive the proceedings were. I’ve attended a few courses elsewhere where the chef jealously guarded the stove and made everyone watch him show off, but Phil was
keen for all six participants to get their hands dirty and really throw themselves into the night’s cooking. While we chopped, marinated and drizzled, Phil happily answered the many questions fired at him and impressed with his mastery of the art of Thai cooking. He taught us a lot, not just about what food combinations work best and how to master certain techniques, but also really useful practical stuff like where to source tricky ingredients or what brands of utensils are the best investment. Another pleasant surprise was that we all sat down, after preparing each dish, and ate our food at the dining table in the adjoining room. I thought we would merely get a small sample of each dish, but we enjoyed a four-course Thai banquet – complete with a few glasses of really excellent wine! One of the highlights of the evening was when Phil invited us, in turn, to create an intricately-designed eggnet on a special hot-plate. The method looked quite difficult and we were all nervous doing it, but Phil was so relaxed and encouraging that we all got into the spirit of it and had a laugh, and not to sound too competitive, but mine was definitely the best! Given that these classes bring strangers together, it’s really important to have the right atmosphere. Had it not been such a relaxed vibe, the level of interaction between the guests, and with Phil himself, may not have been so extensive, so it’s great to see that the guys at My Little Kitchen place just as much of an emphasis on this as they do the food. I’m always stumped about what to buy certain friends and family at Christmas, but this year should be a doddle – classes at My Little Kitchen all round!

COME DINE
“
Determined to prove that a dinner without meat can be immensely satisfying, food blogger and vegan convert Aine Carlin bravely invited a group of carnivores to the Carlin family home in Griffiths Park for an unforgettable feast… I love food. I’m not entirely sure where this obsession came from but here I am; a food blogger and a recent but proud vegan convert. Many people find it hard to get their head around the fact a vegan (‘what do they eat anyway?’) can be stir crazy, head over heels in love with eating. So, when I was asked to host this dinner party it was the perfect opportunity to dispel those myths and give veganism a better name – one that doesn’t have connotations with deprivation, lettuce and holier than thou hippies. I thought long and hard about my menu - stressed about it a wee bit too much - but finally settled on one that would leave my guests feeling satisfied and (fingers crossed) not wanting a KFC on their way home. I’ll admit to perhaps overcompensating for the lack of meat with an array of dishes and probably a nibble too far – I made four, yikes! Of course it didn’t all go smoothly – what dinner party does? I’ve learnt in my long hosting history to now take things in my stride and roll with the punches. Okay, so I was in the now unfamiliar territory on my parents’ kitchen, and I may have misjudged the temperature of the oven, which meant our main was delayed for a few minutes but the conversation (and the wine) flowed and nobody seemed to mind so I wasn’t overly

concerned. I try my very best to relax at my dinner parties because let’s face it, it ain’t all about the food. To aid me in this casual, laid-back manner (in truth I’m like a duck who looks calm on the surface whilst furiously paddling underneath) I like to prepare as much food as possible in advance. I had a hot starter so I was only away from my guests for a short period and the open plan dining arrangement helped me to not feel isolated. I wanted to have a salad starter, which would’ve solved that problem, but I was terrified of serving my carnivorous guests ‘rabbit food’ in case it confirmed their deep-seeded suspicions about Vegan food. I needn’t have worried, though, because my guests were wonderfully open-minded and seemed to genuinely enjoy the food (I haven’t seen the marks yet so I could have flax seed on my face yet!). The revelation of the night was the whipped coconut cream, which people were practically fighting over – If I’d known what a hit it was going to be I would’ve made more! All I hope is that my guests left feeling not that they had eaten some great ‘vegan’ food but that they simply had enjoyed a fantastic meal. Should you wish to try the delicious cream of the Gods yourself, all the recipes from the evening are on my blog: www.peasoupeats.wordpress.com
“I try my very best to relax at my dinner parties because let’s face it, it ain’t all about the food.” Helen McAlister “I thought Aine’s dinner party was excellent. She made us all feel very welcome and comfortable, and the food was extremely tasty. My favourite was the tartlet with the minted pea, which was delicious. Some restaurants have very limited vegetarian options, but Aine opened up a whole new world to me and has definitely encouraged me to try more vegetarian dishes in future.” Score: 10/10

“I never order veggie food when I’m dining out, so I was glad to be given the opportunity to experience a meat-free menu. Aine was a very relaxed host and happily answered all our questions. I was pleasantly surprised at the variety. The colour and texture of the main course was amazing, but all the food was lovely– it felt as if we never stopped eating all night!”
“I had a fantastic night. The food was delicious and Aine was a great host. She left us plenty of room between courses and had everything timed to perfection. My favourite dish was the summer pudding dessert with coconut cream. I never imagined something without real cream would be so tasty. This was my first vegan dinner party and I have to say it was a really great evening.”
“I didn’t miss not having meat at all. I was amazed at the flavours Aine got into all her dishes, and I particularly loved the cherry sorbet and coconut cream dessert. I know people might think I’m biased because she’s my sister, but I can honestly say that if this party was thrown by a stranger I’d still give it full marks!”

As Aine is a successful food blogger, we had high hopes that her dinner party would be of an excellent standard, but we were simply amazed at the professional calibre of the dishes she produced. Besides the fact that she showed experience beyond her years in terms of the flavour and texture combinations of her food, we can also state without reservation that not a single one of her plates would look out of place in a top restaurant: the presentation and colour were a cut above. And it’s no easy task to achieve the wow factor when there’s no meat on the table. Many of us regard vegetarian dishes as the supporting act when it comes to eating a great meal, but Aine proved that, done right, vegan food can be the star of the show!

THE REVIEWS
Timber Quay by David Kavanagh After a long hard week in the office we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Timber Quay. To be honest it was quite some time since my last visit, but after a great night’s food, drink and craic it won’t long be as long ’til my next. Firstly, the design of the restaurant is second to none; very uber modern with super stylish wood panelling and with the most stunning views across the Foyle definitely one of the best settings for a restaurant in the city! There was a nice crowd there on the night and the atmosphere was electric – there’s traditional Irish music played live every Friday. I have to say I found the music a little strange in a modern restaurant setting, but within ten minutes I had my foot tapping along to the music in rhythm and it definitely kept me entertained all night! The staff were very friendly and accommodating, and had us sat comfortably at our table within minutes and a nice chilled bottle of New Zealand Marlborough sauvignon blanc poured into our glasses before long. For starters we shared a selection of bruschettas whilst we kicked back, relaxed and enjoyed the music. When they arrived we were well impressed, four big slabs of bread with gigantic portions of tasty fillings on top – exactly how we like them but maybe a bit too
much for a starter. After devouring the lot we moved onto our mains and I couldn’t believe what was to come. I ordered the usual Derry dinner (fillet Steak, champ, tobacco onions and pepper sauce), and I couldn’t have been happier with what was served. The steak is officially ‘The best fillet steak I have had in at least two years’. It was just perfection, and the meat was tender and succulent beyond belief. Honestly readers, I would definitely recommend a visit if for nothing else but to sample some of the best steaks this town has to offer. After serious interrogation of the waiting staff we found out that all their meats are organic and bought in fresh from a local renowned supplier – you could literally taste the difference! The Moroccan lamb was a delight; beautifully pink with a rich spiced gravy served on a bed of cous cous. After finishing up on our mains we couldn’t fit in a dessert, but we did have a nosey at the table next to us and theirs looked to die for. In summary, I got one hell of a shock when I visited. Nothing could have prepared me for the taste explosion of flavours from my steak! I’m converted and will save my steak dinners to this restaurant from now on in!

THE REVIEWS
Cafe Del Mondo by Mary-Anne McNulty You can find me most lunchtimes down at Cafe Del Mondo. I’ve been a fan of this place for quite a while, mainly because the food is super fresh and the staff are really nice. Plus, they have a lovely outdoor seating area that, weather permitting, I’ll be able to enjoy for a week or two yet. My favourite dish on the menu is the chicken and bacon caesar salad because, no matter who the server, it’s always comes topped with a generous portion of thickly-shaved parmesan cheese (overly generous, you might say, so don’t mention this to Eddie Kerr). It comes with a side order of fresh-baked bread that I can say without reservation is the best in town. The goats cheese and spinach tartlet is another winner, which comes with a side salad that is like a meal in itself, loaded up with potato salad, couscous, sumptuous vine tomatoes and other tasty delights. For the sweet-toothed, the white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake is excellent, but like practically everything else being served here you really can’t go far wrong if you like fresh and well-seasoned food that hasn’t been within five miles of a deep fat fryer.
And though there’s astute nod to commercialism in the professional and efficient way in which the cafe is run, the relaxed vibe is anything but corporate. The mix of clientele is wide-ranging, from visiting foreign students and jaunty bohemian types through to guys in suits and wee women just off the Ballymac bus. My sister was home on a visit recently and we had lunch here. She’s notoriously hard to please when it comes to food, so I took the fact that she raved about the place the whole way home as a good sign. My only gripe is that the likes of their chilli or beef stroganoff comes with bread or salad but not rice, which I personally would prefer but I’ll let them off if they keep the chunks of parmesan coming. All profits from the cafe go to SEEDS, a charity that promotes racial, ethnic and cultural diversity in the North West, an outlook very much reflected in the diversity of its clientele. Some non-profit cafes come in for criticism for being big on ideals but not great when it comes to business acumen, but Cafe Del Mondo isn’t one of them. I’d gladly eat here every day whether the proceeds were going to charity or not.

I’M REALLY ENJOYING MY TIME AS MAYOR. The best bit for me is that you get to see a lot of the good work going on all across the city. Seeing firsthand the time people give to their communities, and their generosity, is very uplifting.
and Cashier No. 9, and I was raging that this was the first year I couldn’t make it to Glasgowbury. Paddy Glasgow and everyone involved in the festival have done a brilliant job of showcasing local talent.
BEING PART OF THE CITY OF CULTURE BID TEAM has been an amazing experience, and I’m really excited about what the title will bring to the city over the next few years. What makes me proud to be from Derry is the pride that everyone here has in their city, and their ability to unite behind a common goal, whatever background they may be from.
MY PERFECT DAY would involve nothing fancy. Just relaxing down in Moville, or Greencastle, with the sun shining, would be good enough for me.
MY FAVOURITE FILM IS THE GODFATHER. Actually, the whole trilogy is brilliant. They’re a perfect example of filmmaking at its very best. I’M A MANCHESTER UNITED FAN, and Roy Keane is definitely my all time favourite player. And, of course, I’m also a Derry City supporter. I love playing football myself any chance I get, though I haven’t had as much time of late, so I’m not as good a player as I used to be! I’M A BIG FAN OF THE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE. I love bands like General Fiasco
THE PERSON I’D MOST LIKE TO MEET is Nelson Mandela. I know loads of people must say that, but I think he’s such an inspirational character. To have remained so positive in the face of the most abject circumstances is remarkable, and that positivity allowed South Africa to rebuild itself as a nation based on principles of reconciliation and equality. MY FONDEST MEMORY is from when I was a child, playing about on my granda’s farm in Cookstown and getting up to as much mischief as we could get away with! MY BEST FRIEND is my girlfriend Rachael. She’s been really supportive since my term as mayor began, and is doing her bit as mayoress. We have a good laugh together.
