Saracens recently undertook an anonymous online review of the perceived impact of its PDP – Personal Development Programme from the professional players perspective. 95% of the professional squad responded to the survey and revealed the following results. The following ‘headline’ results reflect the percentage of the professional squad that (agree or strongly agree) with the following impact:

73% of the professional squad (agree or strongly agree) that their involvement in Saracens PDP has contributed to the improvement of their own on-field performance. This figures increases to 83% when participants have been in the programme for over 3 years. This figures increases to 90% when participants are 30 years old or more.

93% believe they are a better; more well rounded person from engaging in Saracens PDP. This figures increases to 100% when participants are 30 years old or more.

90% of the professional squad (agree or strongly agree) that engaging in PDP activities has, in some


way, provided them with a greater sense of perspective on their own performance based worries and anxieties. This figures increases to 95% for participants with international caps.

90% believe that engaging in non-Rugby personal development activities adds to Saracens overall competitive advantage. This figures increases to 100% when participants are 30 years old or more.

88% believe that Engaging in PDP activities has contributed to them developing a broader identity alongside their identity as a “Rugby Player�. This figures increases to 95% for participants with international caps. This figures increases to 100% when participants are 30 years old or more.

88% believe that Players’ engaging in non-Rugby personal development activities has positively added to Saracens overall development as a team.

83% believe that engaging in PDP activities has given them a different/healthier mental perspective on their approach to the performance challenges of rugby.


This figures increases to 92% when participants have been in the programme for over 3 years or are over 30 years old.

81% of the professional squad (agree or strongly agree) that having an Individual Personal Development Plan has contributed to the improvement of their own on-field performance. This figures increases to 93% when participants have been in the programme for over 3 years. This figures increases to 100% when participants are 30 years old or more.

81% believe that attending to life concerns and life goals away from Rugby has contributed to the improvement of their on-field performance. This figures increases to 84% for participants with international caps. This figures increases to 100% when participants are 30 years old or more.

81% believe that engaging in PDP activities has increased their self-awareness (the degree to which they know their strengths and weaknesses). This figures increases to 90% when participants are 30 years old or more or have international caps.

81% believe the PDP offers a valuable opportunity to interact (get to know/ better understand) other players and coaches in a non-rugby environment.


This figures increases to 91% when participants are 30 years old or more.

76% believe that engaging in PDP activities helps them live a more balanced life and prevents them from over-thinking and over worrying about their rugby career and performances. This figures increases to 84% for participants with international caps. This figures increases to 91% when participants have been in the programme for over 3 years.

74% believe the PDP has contributed to them feeling valued by the organisation as a person, and not just a “Rugby Player�. This figures increases to 100% when participants are 30 years old or more, and increases to 95% for participants with international caps.

72% of the professional squad feel more in control of their own destiny because of the PDP.

67% agree that engaging in PDP activities has added to their personal self-confidence. This figures increases to 79% for participants with international caps. This figures increases to 82% when participants are 30 years old or more.


67% agree that the PDP has, in some way, positively influenced their home life & relationships with family & friends. This figures increases to 82% when participants are 30 years old or more, and increases to 84% for participants with international caps.

57% believe the PDP has enhanced their quality of life.

45% state that the PDP was (or will be) a factor in them deciding to renew their contractual status. This figures increases to 58% for participants with international caps, and increases to 64% when participants are 30 years old or more.
