Front Cover: Sanford Wurmfeld, II-4, 1974, Acrylic on canvas, 48 x 48” One of three spectacular and important paintings by Sanford Wurmfeld that have never been presented in an exhibition. They are from the seminal series initially exhibited in the inaugural show of the Susan Caldwell Gallery and at Denise Rene Gallery in 1974, where the larger horizontal paintings measuring 72 inches in length were presented. These early works experimented with combinations of multiple hues in grids migrating across the canvas and variations with fully saturated colors and ranges of values with and without white. These led to the artist’s understanding of color, value and pattern with respect to visual perception and gave rise to his more monumental paintings and ultimately the fully immersive cycloramas. Ernest Dieringer Announcement, 1966 Acrylic on canvas 93” × 93”
80
This painting was used for the invitation for Dieringer’s first solo show at Poindexter Gallery on W 56 ST, New York. While not widely known today, Dieringer exhibited alongside preeminent artists of the mid-20th-century such as Willem de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Ellsworth Kelly, and Frank Stella. Dieringer began his career in association with the Chicago-based Wells Street Gallery in 1957, where he showed his work with other abstract artists such as Robert Natkin and John Chamberlain. The gallery was considered a vanguard space in Chicago for exhibiting abstract artists from the surrounding area who were not yet established. Artists associated with the gallery eventually became known as the Wells Street Group. Due to the success of the gallery, Dieringer and other group members were invited by the Manhattan-based, contemporary art dealer Elin Poindexter to join her gallery in the 1960s.
