Giraffe Snared Chyulu Hills National Park
The SWT/KWS de-snaring unit in Chyulu Hills National Park reported an adult male giraffe with a long wire snare around its neck.
Immobilisation, examination and treatment
The snared giraffe was successfully darted from a vehicle with 14 mg Etorphine and 50 mg of Azaperone.
The long wire snare around the giraffe’s neck was removed. Fortunately, the snare had not yet caused any injury. Antibiotics were administered to cover for secondary bacterial infection then anaesthesia was immediately reversed.
Prognosis
The giraffe has a good prognosis.
Giraffe Snared Emasuyat, Kuku Group Ranch
BLF rangers reported an adult male giraffe with a wire snare around its neck.
Immobilisation, examination and treatment
The giraffe was darted from a vehicle with 15 mg Etorphine and 50 mg Azaperone.
The wire snare around the giraffe’s neck was removed. Fortunately, the animal had not suffered any injury. Anaesthesia was thereafter immediately reversed, and the animal released.
Prognosis
The giraffe has a good prognosis.
Giraffe Natural Causes Lolakir, Olgulului Group Ranch
The Chief, Lenkism reported an adult female giraffe that had collapsed next to his house at Lolakir in Olgulului Group Ranch.
Immobilisation, examination and treatment
The giraffe was found recumbent, and therefore chemical immobilization was not required to restrain it.
The giraffe was unable to stand, and its ear had been eaten up by the local domestic dogs. Given the giraffe’s poor prognosis, it was euthanized to alleviate further pain and suffering.
Case 13 – 27th February 2023
Zebra Snared Kimana Sanctuary
BLF rangers reported an adult female zebra with a wire snare around its neck.
Immobilisation, examination and treatment
The zebra was successfully darted from a vehicle with 4 mg Etorphine and 70 mg Azaperone.
The zebra had a wire snare around the neck, fortunately no snare related injuries were observed. The snare was removed then anaesthesia was reversed.
Prognosis
The zebra has a good prognosis.
