COMMUNITY OUTREACH MONTHLY REPORT
MARCH 2018 SUMMARY In March, the DSWT carried out 7 schools trips for schools around Mtito-Andei area to Tsavo West National Park. These trips are aimed at giving school children an opportunity to learn about nature in an outside classroom set up as well as cultivating in them conservation skills. Other activities taking place during March included the donation of desks to an impoverished school bordering the Chyulu Hills National Park, the harvesting of honey from DSWT bee hive fences bordering Tsavo East and training of farmers, as well as the distribution of hundreds of indigenous tree saplings to communities.
SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS During each field trip at least 25 school children were accompanied by a maximum of four teachers and guided through the park by DSWT officers. Participating children were equipped with a DSWT field guide booklet detailing literature on the park they are visiting and a spotter’s guide to help them understand the wide variety of wildlife species in a natural environment.

BEEHIVE FENCES The team managed to harvest and acquire considerable amounts of honey from the DSWT bee farmers neighbouring the Tsavo Conservation Area (TCA) this month. Qualitative beekeeping training was done with the bee farmers to improve their know-how on bee farming.
DESK DONATIONS DSWT donated desks to Mwitasyano primary school this month. This is a school that borders the Chyulu fence line and after discovering that many of the children are forced to learn sitting on a dirt floor funding was found to build these custom made desks especially for the school. The children were very joyous and the Board of meeting thanked David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust for such a great donation.
TREE NURSERY In the same month, The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has managed to supply organizations and a neighbouring school with saplings to help boost their environment. This has greatly helped in encouraging children to take care of the natural environment as well as strengthening our relationship with organizations that we share similar objectives respectively. This includes the KWS, Nyika Bird Sanctuary;
