Now in the peak of the dry season, the teams this month witnessed many cases of wildlife, especially elephants, falling victim to the drought. With reduced watering holes and vegetation available, animals are unable to get the sustenance they need to survive through these deadly dry spells, which are becoming increasingly common. Poachers also take advantage of the drought to hunt their prey as animals congregate around the last remaining water sources making them easier targets, although knowing wildlife movements and therefore poacher movements, the DSWT Anti-Poaching teams are able to dedicate their patrols where they are needed the most, in an effort to deter illegal activity or/and apprehend any offenders. The number of arrests this month doubled in comparison with last month. Significant apprehensions included 2 ivory poachers, 1 arrested by the Ziwani team who was caught during a night ambush with ivory in his possession, and 1 by the Mtito team who was found hunting elephants in the Park with a bow and poisoned arrows. Other arrests included 5 bushmeat poachers with over 27kg of dikdik bushmeat, 45 livestock herders caught in the Park, 8 charcoal burners and 1 trespasser who was potentially bushmeat poaching. In total 8 elephant carcasses were discovered during August, many first sighted by the DSWT Aerial Unit who made the reports to the base station for a ground team to follow up on them. The majority of cases were found to have died due to the drought. This dry season also traditionally sees an increase in elephant rescues, and the teams were involved in 2 rescues this month, whilst cases of humanelephant conflict also increased as elephants venture into community lands in a desperate search for food and water; the teams responded to 8 separate cases this month, successfully pushing the elephants back into the safety of the Park with support from the Aerial Unit. The Chyulu team was on annual leave this month whilst the Mtito, Burra and Yatta teams were working part-month with the remaining teams carrying out full operations.
